Japan & Myanmar: Kirin halts payments from beer ventures in Myanmar to military-linked partner
|
Japanese beverage group Kirin Holdings Co said it was halting payments from its beer ventures in Myanmar to local partner Myanmar Economic Holdings Public Company (MEHL), an entity linked to the country’s military, Reuters reported on November 11.
The United Nations has identified the owners of MEHL as members of the Myanmar military, which has been accused by the world body of genocide and other war crimes against the Rohingya Muslim minority.
Myanmar denies genocide, saying its military was carrying out legitimate operations against Rohingya insurgents who attacked police posts.
Amnesty International has called on Kirin and other companies to cut ties with the company.
“This is a suspension, not a postponement,” a Kirin spokesman said on November 11.
In a statement, the company said the decision was taken “in view of a significant lack of visibility regarding the future business environment for our Myanmar joint ventures.”
It made no mention of the accusations against Myanmar’s army.
Calls to MEHL seeking comment were not answered on November 11.
Kirin in June said that it had hired Deloitte Tohmatsu Financial Advisory to investigate its Myanmar operations, where it owns 51% of the joint venture running Myanmar Brewery Limited and Mandalay Brewery Limited.

Small Brewery Sunday will return for a second year on Nov. 29. The national beer holiday, created by the Brewers Association (BA) — the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American craft brewers — encourages beer lovers to celebrate on the Sunday after Thanksgiving and support local breweries, brewpubs, and taprooms throughout the holiday season and beyond, Craft Brewing Business reported on November 12.
This year’s holiday is especially significant, given the insecure and uncertain futures of small businesses impacted by the pandemic and by further restrictions in operations.
The premise of the holiday is simple: beer lovers support small and independent craft breweries by visiting or supporting taprooms and brewpubs — businesses that are critical to local communities and economies nationwide. More than two-thirds of Americans live within 10 miles of a brewery, and in 2019 the craft brewing industry contributed $82.9 billion to the U.S. economy, employed more than 580,000 Americans, and provided charitable contributions worth more than $80 million.

South Africa: Beer Association of South Africa welcomes lifting of restrictions on off-consumption trade of alcohol

Industry organisation the Beer Association of South Africa (Basa) has welcomed the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on November 11 that the restrictions on the off-consumption trade of alcohol would be lifted with effect from 00:01 on November 12, meaning that outlets will once again be able to trade during all licensed trading hours, the Engineering News reported on November 12.
Over the past seven weeks (since the start of alert level one on September 21), licensed outlets have been allowed to sell alcohol for home consumption on weekdays from 09:00 to 17:00.
According to Basa, this has had a “devastating” impact on small businesses.
As a result of continued lockdown restrictions, 15% of craft breweries have been forced to close down over the past few months, it says.
“Many breweries that have managed to stay open have been forced to retrench staff, resulting in hundreds of job losses across the sector,” Basa says.
It also claims that restrictions have not been successful in stopping off-site alcohol sales over weekends in unlicensed establishments, but rather, that trade in alcohol shifted to the illicit black market.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest barley buyer, is poised to stop running government tenders for the grain as the kingdom shifts toward private deals for imports, Bloomberg reported on November 12.
The Riyadh-based Saudi Arabia Grains Organization will stop running the tenders once private companies fully take over the process of importing and selling barley, according to two officials with knowledge of the matter.
The state-run Saudi Press Agency said on November 10 private entities have been assigned the process of importing and selling barley, citing a cabinet statement.
The move is a significant change for a nation whose several grain tenders a year are closely watched by traders for indications of prices and trade flows. In 2016, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman unveiled an economic-transformation program under which businesses will take a more prominent role in the state-denominated economy. Food security is one of the goals of that plan.
Saudi Arabia imports barley to feed its camel, goat and sheep herds, with sales dominated by Ukraine, Russia and the European Union in recent years. SAGO has managed barley purchases for the past four years.

USA: Tax cut extension ‘imperative’ for craft distillers
|
The deadline for the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act is looming once again, and with a global pandemic and tariffs to also contend with the stakes have never been higher, The Spirits Business reported on November 13.
The monumental passing of the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act in 2017 marked the first time the US government reduced taxes for spirits producers of all sizes since the Civil War.
The act, which was announced as part of president Donald Trump’s US$1.4 trillion tax reform bill, equalises federal excise tax (FET) on spirits, wine and beer for the first 100,000 gallons produced annually. Under the legislation, distillers pay US$2.70 per proof gallon for the first 100,000 gallons produced in the calendar year. Previously, distilled spirits were taxed at US$13.50 per proof gallon.
Just weeks before it was due to expire at the end of 2019, the US government agreed to extend the act by another 12 months, a move welcomed by trade groups and distillers in the US. Many trade associations, including the Distilled Spirits Council of the US (Discus), have called for the act to be made permanent.
