Brewery news Ireland: Stout accounts for 13% of all alcohol consumed in Ireland
13% of all alcohol consumed in Ireland is stout, research showed.

According to Drinks Ireland|Beer stout makes up 29.3% of total beer sales in 2019.

Additionally, the value of stout sales in Ireland was €796 million in 2019, official Revenue clearance figures published earlier this week showed.

In 2019, stout made up 64.3% of total beer production, up by 1.2% from 2018.

Stout makes up part of Ireland’s beer exports, which increased by 8.5% in 2019, reaching €305 million.

Jonathan McDade, Head of Drinks Ireland|Beer said: “Irish stout is world-renowned, beloved by consumers at home and abroad."

"While consumers won’t be able to enjoy their favourite stout in a pub, bar or restaurant today, we’re encouraging them to raise a glass at home to toast the sector," he added.

Like other parts of the drinks industry, COVID-19 has significantly impacted the stout sector.

Between January and September, consumption fell by almost 15% compared to 2019.

Looking specifically at the third quarter, which covers July to September, it was down by 17.2%, the figures showed.

"It’s been a challenging 2020 for stout producers, who will be hoping for some recovery in 2021,” McDade added.

Brewery news Canada & USA: Cannabis giant Aphria Inc to purchase Atlanta craft brewer SweetWater Brewing Co
Canadian cannabis giant Aphria Inc said on November 4 it plans to buy Atlanta craft brewer SweetWater Brewing Co for $300 million as it looks to expand into the United States while becoming the first major pot producer to enter the alcoholic beverages market, Reuters reported.

The deal gives Aphria a U.S. distribution point at a time when cannabis is gaining broader acceptance in the country, with four more states voting to legalize recreational cannabis on November 3 and the Democrats promising to decriminalize marijuana federally if elected to the White House.

The merger also comes close on the heels of a recent announcement by larger rival Canopy Growth Corp to launch its pot-infused beverages in key U.S. markets through a partnership with Acreage Holdings Inc next summer.

While Atlanta, Georgia-based SweetWater does not sell any pot-infused beverages, it is famous for its “420” beer that smells like weed, and Aphria’s CEO Irwin Simon said the deal helps his company raise brand-awareness in the U.S. and capitalize on future legalization at state or federal level.

A host of alcohol brands have taken stakes in cannabis companies, including Corona-maker Constellation Brands Inc STZ.N which backs Canopy, but Aphria's purchase reverses the trend to be the ...More info on site

Brewery news Ghana: Guinness Ghana Breweries declares dividend for the third year running
Ghana’s leading total beverage manufacturing company, Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC, has declared dividend for the third year running to its shareholders, after the company’s 48th Annual General Meeting held in Accra, GhanaWeb reported on November 5.

The financial year under review delivered GHc 4.26 million in dividend, which translates into a dividend payout of GH¢0.0138 per share, which was approved by the shareholders on Wednesday, 4th November 2020.

The Board Chairman of Guinness Ghana Dr Felix Addo said the company has had another positive performance and remains unrelenting on its ambition to create the best performing, most trusted and respected consumer products company in Ghana.

“Guinness Ghana delivered a strong performance in the first nine (9) months of the year. This was mainly driven by strong topline growth in major products category and benefit from our strong brand equity and capex investment,” he said.

He, however, noted that the outbreak of Covid-19 presented significant challenges for the business as the on-trade was closed for the fourth quarter, but was proud that the full-year sales performance still grew significantly versus last year whilst the business kept the health and safety of our employees and supporting our communities as a priority.

“Despite our challenges this year we ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors might suspend or discontinue some SKUs due to shortage of cans
Molson Coors is struggling with a shortage of cans, to the point where it might have to suspend or discontinue some SKUs, its top executives told analysts.

Speaking at the quarterly earnings call, CEO Gavin Hattersley said, “Like all other beverage companies, one of the biggest challenges this year has been packaging supply.” During the pandemic, consumers are drinking beer more often at home. This means less demand for bottles, which are more often used in bars and other foodservice channels, and more for cans, favored by home drinkers.

Molson Coors has sold 300 million more cans of beer in the first nine months of 2020 than in 2019. The demand for tall cans was four times what it was last year, Hattersley said.

He noted that a new line that can produce 750 million cans a year, a joint venture with Ball Corp., just came online. However, he said, “From a complexity point of view, from a brewery point of view, I would expect that we will have less SKUs coming up when we come out of this pandemic than we did coming into the pandemic.” He gave no indication as to which SKUs might face termination.

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors completes sale of California brewery to Pabst Brewing
Molson Coors Beverage Company and Pabst Brewing Company, LLC announced on November 5 that they have completed the sale of Molson Coors’s Irwindale, Calif., brewery property to Irwindale Brew Yard, a subsidiary of Pabst.

In January 2020, Molson Coors announced that it would cease production at the 40-year-old facility by September of 2020. Pabst had the option to purchase the brewery for $150 million per a previously negotiated settlement agreement.

Adam Sher, Irwindale Brew Yard President said: “We are pleased to complete the acquisition of the Irwindale Brewery property. We are continuing to conduct our feasibility study to determine whether there is a path to reopen and operate the brewery at a later date and are committed to choosing a path forward that is in the best interest of all our stakeholders.”

“The sale of the Irwindale facility allows us to streamline our operations for greater efficiency across our network and further strengthen our liquidity,” said Molson Coors Chief Financial Officer, Tracey Joubert. Molson Coors has already transitioned the production from Irwindale to its breweries in Golden, Colo., and Fort Worth, Texas.

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors completes sale of California brewery to Pabst Brewing
A study of just under 17,000 Australian craft beer drinkers has revealed a significant change to consumer purchasing channels with a big increase in online as a direct result of COVID-19, PRWire reported on November 5.

Created by craft beer retailer Beer Cartel, the 2020 Australian Craft Beer Survey is the most comprehensive study ever undertaken with Australian craft beer drinkers. It is the fifth year the study has been run.

Richard Kelsey, Director of Beer Cartel said the growth of craft beer sales online was of no real surprise for him as Beer Cartel had been living this growth over the past year.

“We’ve seen first-hand this switch to online and know the pressure it has put on our own business, with two to three years growth compressed into just one. We’ve had to double our staff and re-engineer our processes to keep up with the massive increase in demand. And while that is just our business, I’m sure it is being reflected across the whole industry,” said Mr Kelsey.

Key findings of the research included:

Black Hops has been voted Australia's best craft brewery. For the first time consumers have chosen Black Hops Brewery on Queensland's Gold Coast as Australia's best, followed ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Beer and Indian Made Liquor see declining sales even after festive season in Karnataka
Karnataka’s State Excise revenue continues to register negative growth even after the festive season of Dasara, when traditionally liquor sales and consumption pick up every year, The New Indian Express reported on November 4.

There has been an unprecedented 13.94 per cent decrease in the sale of Indian Made Liquor (IML) and 38.91 per cent decline in the sale of beer between April and October this year compared to the corresponding period last year. This year between April and October, the Department through the Karnataka State Beverages Corporation Limited (KSBCL) has sold 301.84 lakh case boxes (CBs) of IML as against 350.73 lakh CBs during the same period last year.

Beer has taken a bigger hit than IML in the Covid year. The Department figures show that they have sold 104.09 lakh CBs between April and October this year as against 170.40 lakh CBs for the same period last year. One CB contains 8.64 litres of liquor.

The government this year had laid out an ambitious revenue target of `22,700 crore for 2020-21 for the Excise Department. But because of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns, the Department has barely managed to collect `11,698.18 crore, which amounts to 51.53 per cent of the ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Impact of stricter lockdown measures on malting barley sector hard to predict exactly at this point of time
The imposing of stricter lockdown measures that came into effect on November 5 will see the English hospitality sector limit the sale of alcohol to a takeaway only basis, with ‘eat-in’ meal occasions restricted until 2 December. The implications of this will be seen across the agricultural sector, AHDB said.

The impact of the current situation on the malting barley sector will primarily be the loss of alcohol sales from pubs, bars and restaurants (on-trade). An uptick in retail sales (off-trade) of alcohol could help ease some losses though not to the extent required. Over the course of September, an additional £261 million was spent on retail alcohol sales compared to the same period last year, perhaps indicating a change in consumer trends during the pandemic. Brewing demand is likely more to be affected by this current lockdown, owing to the shorter lead time compared to liquor production, with whisky as an example. Distillers could see longer-term impacts from lockdown measures, in the twelve months to 31 March 2020, 16% of spirit alcohol servings took place after 10pm in the UK on-trade, compared to 7% for beer, according to Kantar.

Should separate lockdown measures be eased in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Barley exports down 19% in September
Australia exported 197,183 tonnes of barley in September, down 19 per cent from 244,842 tonnes shipped in August, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The biggest-volume customer for Australian barley in September was Japan on 86,849 tonnes, followed by Thailand on 35,628 tonnes and China on 33,878 tonnes.

Vietnam and China were the only destinations for bulk malting cargoes exported in September, while Japan and Thailand were the volume buyers on food and feed barley respectively.

China, on 23,560 tonnes, was the biggest buyer of the 48,403 tonnes of Australian sorghum shipped in September, up 85pc from the August total.

Kenya has made a surprise appearance as a bulk sorghum destination via a food-aid cargo which shipped from Central Queensland’s Gladstone Port.

September sorghum exports reflect the late and small Queensland sorghum crop which made September the feature month for bulk exports.

This compares with normal years when Queensland can be expected to be a volume exporter of sorghum from roughly May to August.

Public reporting of stocks will cease this month as drought turns to surplus as Australia’s eastern states swing into a hectic export program not seen since 2016-17.

When drought pushed New South Wales and Queensland into grain ...More info on site

Barley news China: Chinese experts and growers say duties on Australian barley are legitimate
China’s anti-dumping duties on Australian barley are legitimate, and they have effectively safeguarded the interests of the domestic barley industry, Chinese experts and barley growers said on November 5, The Manila Times reports.

China has reportedly rejected Australia’s appeal to remove the 80-percent barley tariffs imposed in May, according to media reports on November 2.

Xu Ru’gen, executive director of the beer and barley association in East China’s Jiangsu Province, welcomed the news, saying that the tariffs have had a notable effect in safeguarding the interests of Chinese barley growers.

“This is a strong message in safeguarding domestic barley industry, which has contracted under the pressure of massive Australian barley imports,” Xu told the Global Times on November 3. Jiangsu is a major barley-growing region in China.

Farmers in China lost interest in growing barley as prices fell due to a large influx of Australian barley. The barley-growing area in Jiangsu declined to 1 million mu (66,666.7 hectares) from more than 3 million mu in the past few years.

“An influx of Australian barley took away the pricing power of domestic barley growers,” Xu said, noting that the tariffs have effectively altered the situation. Now, farmers have resumed growing the crop and seed supply is ...More info on site

Barley news France: Farmers report winter sowing progress
French farmers had sown 76% of the expected soft wheat area for next year's harvest by Nov. 2, compared with 66% a week earlier, farm office FranceAgriMer said on November 6.

Soft wheat sowing remained both ahead of the pace last year, when 63% of the area had been sown by the same week, and in line with the average rate of the past five years, FranceAgriMer said in its weekly cereal crop report.

Progress was slower than in the previous two weeks, suggesting heavy showers last week held up some field work.

However, traders and analysts are generally optimistic about France's sowing campaign, expecting soft wheat to recoup the large amount of area lost last year during a very wet autumn.

Soft wheat crops had now emerged on an estimated 48% of the expected area, up from 22% a week earlier and 36% a year ago, FranceAgriMer said.

For winter barley, an estimated 87% of the area had been sown against 80% the previous week and 78% a year earlier.

Crops had emerged on an estimated 62% of the winter barley area, up from 32% the prior week and ahead of a year-earlier 54%.

Barley news South Africa: Farmers expecting record malting barley crop this year
South Africa is expecting a record malting barley crop of just over 526 700 tonnes, which is up nearly 53% from the previous season, the Farmer’s Weekly reported on November 6.

However, quality issues in the Southern Cape production regions were affecting barley that was earmarked for malting purposes, according to Richard Krige, vice-chairperson of Grain SA, and a farmer near Caledon in the Overberg region.

Against this expected record harvest, malting barley usage took a sharp hit due to the temporary ban on liquor sales under COVID-19 regulations.

Krige said the build-up of surplus malting barley had led to grave concern among farmers, especially since the 2020/2021 crop still had to be harvested. He stressed that AB InBev had, however, “bent over backwards to commit to the mandate as issued and contracted with farmers”.

According to Krige, AB InBev’s mandate for barley procurement in the 2020 crop year was just over 340 390 tonnes in the Southern Cape, 35 000t in the Western Cape, and 81 500 tonnes for the northern irrigation areas, for a total of about 456 890 tonnes.

Producer estimates in the Southern Cape region had been about 441 890 tonnes at the end of September, he said.

“However, quality issues will lead ...More info on site
