Canada: Molson Coors extends partnership with Heineken in Canada
|
Molson Coors Beverage Company has announced has it has extended its partnership with Heineken N.V. in Canada, signing a new multi-year agreement to continue representing brands from the Dutch company’s portfolio for the Canadian marketplace, the Canadian Beer News reported on November 10.
The deal will see Molson Coors continuing to manage distribution and sales of Heineken Original, Heineken 0.0, Sol, Strongbow, Birra Moretti, Tecate, Dos Equis, Murphy’s Stout, and Newcastle Brown Ale in Canada until 2025. Molson Coors will also continue to collaborate with Heineken Canada on promotion and advertising of the brands.
“Being local stewards to these iconic global brands is a responsibility we don’t take lightly,” said Martin Coyle, Chief Commercial Officer for the Molson Coors Canada, in a statement. “They are beloved all over the world, and it’s up to us to continue to build their relevance and to grow their share in Canada.”

USA, SC: Mark Anthony Brewing to build new production facility in Richland County
|
Mark Anthony Brewing has announced plans to build a new state-of-the-art brewery and production facility in Richland County, WIS10 reported on November 11.
The facility will create 300 new jobs and represents one of the largest economic investments in Richland County history.
This will be one of the largest breweries built in the US in over 25 years.
The new facility will be located in Pineview Industrial Park in Columbia and will produce White Claw Hard Seltzer, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Mike’s Harder Lemonade, and Cayman Jack Cocktails. It will provide much-needed capacity to keep up with consumer demand in the southern United States. Warehousing and distribution operations will also be located on-site.
Construction is slated to begin almost immediately and is expected to be fully operational by summer 2021.

Canada, BC: BC craft beer industry still kicking amid COVID-19
|
At the outset of COVID-19, British Columbia’s craft breweries found themselves struggling to stay afloat due to the sudden closure of their taprooms and reduced production capacity due to physical distancing measures. However, these breweries are still kicking seven months later due to changes in business practices. From deliveries to extended patio space, B.C. craft brewers are finding ways to adapt and keep British Columbians supplied with their favourite local draught, the Martlet reported on November 6.
In March, as people sheltered inside their homes and businesses began closing their doors, breweries were faced with a 100 per cent loss in their draught sales as restaurants and bars suddenly transitioned to pick-up and delivery only. Additionally, many breweries lost most of their in-house revenue due to the closure of taprooms.
These closures left most breweries dependent on pick-up, delivery, and liquor store sales.
In April, the Canadian Craft Brewers Association (CCBA) warned that almost half of breweries surveyed had reported a greater than 50 per cent decrease in revenue for March. USA, MT: Montana barley industry, malt factories at standstill amid pandemic
|
Ranked second nationally for production, barley is one of the key crops grown in Montana every year. In 2020, before the pandemic hit, Montana farmers were expected to seed 10% more barley than the previous year, NBC Montana reported on November 11.
But now, 2019 crops are still sitting in bins after malt factories were ordered by the state government to shut down.
“Our average (bushel of barley) per acre was in the 50s," said Charles Bumgarner, chairman of Montana Wheat and Barley and family farm owner in Great Falls. "This year we were in the low 70s. We put up more storage to accommodate that. We put up another 5,000 bushels of storage (for the extra barley). Economically, we've got stuff sitting in the bins that should be delivered that we don't have the money for.”
Bumgarner is a fourth-generation farmer and owns a 6,000-acre farm from his parents.
“My great-grandfather homesteaded here, and my grandfather was actually born on this farm," said Bumgarner. "My son is working with us, and he is planning on taking over after I retire.”

USA, TN: Hampline Brewing Company on track to open by New Year’s
|
Hampline Brewing Company is “on track to open by New Year’s” in Memphis, says Martha Hample, one of the brewery's key management people alongside Richard Rhodes, who owns the property, and regional brewer Wes Osier, the Memphis Flyer reported on November 6.
The brewery is named after the Hampline bike path that runs from Overton Park down Broad, she says.
Osier, formerly of Urban South and Abita Breweries in New Orleans, Terrapin Beer Company in Athens, Georgia, and SweetWater Brewery in Atlanta, wanted to open a brewery in Memphis, Hample says. “And at that time, we were using this space as an adjunct facility for Maciel’s on Highland. It’s a small space, but we thought this would be a good place to do a small brewery. It’s down the street from Wiseacre, which creates a little bit of a brew path.”
They began raising money for the brewery, but, she says, “The good old pandemic got in our way, which delayed things considerably.”
They kept going. “It’s what kept us going through the pandemic.”

Canada, ON: Paris Beer Company already open in Paris, Ontario
|
A new brewery and taproom that is aiming to be a place where “beer, food and entertainment will combine to create a local, cultural experience for residents and visitors alike” has announced its opening in Paris, Ontario, the Canadian Beer News reported on November 10.
Paris Beer Company is located in the historic Wincey Mills Market building, and has been founded by brothers Ken and John Edgar, their wives Jennifer and Marsha, and brewmaster Christian von der Heide.
The Edgar family has been part of the local farming community for seven generations, and are owners of the Von Edgar Hop Yard where the hops used in the brewery’s beers are grown.
Currently in soft launch mode, Paris Beer Company has opened for several reservation-only tasting sessions over the past couple of weeks, with a variety of beers available by the pint and in sample flights including Mill Race Bohemian Pilsner (5.5% abv), Wincey Weiss Wheat Beer (5% abv), Head Gate Helles Lager (4.8% abv), Nith Country Ale (4.8% abv), Tagwerk Smoked Oat Porter (5.8% abv), Barnyard Bully Double IPA (6% abv), Tagwerk Kveik Farmhaus Ale (6.5% abv), Smakelijk Wit (5% abv), and Lazy Dog Heller Bock (6% abv).

USA, OH: Mentor Brewing Company aiming to open in Mentor in early December
|
A sense of home holds a strong place for Mentor Brewing Company, a new brewery that’s aiming to open in the Lake County city in early December, Cleveland.com reported on November 10.
To see the brewery’s local focus, look no further than its name, or its tables and bar created by local carpenters and metalworkers, or its beer list with names inspired by Mentor landmarks, streets and historic figures.
A bit of the city finds its way inside the space at 9528 Diamond Centre Drive. Owners Brian Seelinger and Rick Mack have a strong philosophy of showing off local talent and history whenever possible, they said.
“We’re supported by local folks. Through the pandemic and everything else, we have our local customers who help support us in these times,” Mack said. “It’s about supporting local, and hoping that locals support us as well.”
Though Mentor Brewing Company is a new addition to Northeast Ohio’s brewery scene, Mack and Seelinger are no strangers to it. USA, PA: River Bend Hop Farm and Brewery shuts down operations
|
A Perry County brewery and hop farm has shut down operations, pennlive.com reported on November 9.
Owners of the 3-year-old River Bend Hop Farm and Brewery at 1800 Lower Bailey Road in Newport made the announcement Nov. 6 on the brewery’s website and Facebook page.
“As many of you know, in today’s climate with COVID-19, it has become more and more difficult to continue to keep River Bend’s doors open with the regulations we must follow,” they wrote.
Co-owners Tom and Melissa Beers along with Denny and Wendy Browne opened River Bend in 2017 after converting a century-old barn into the brewery and taproom. It was the first brewery to open in recent years in Perry County, thus giving the owners license to call it the county’s oldest brewery.
River Bend’s beers covered several styles from hoppy or sour to dark, sweet or light. They also made artisan sodas and grew and sold hops, a key ingredient in beer-making.
“After 3 wonderful years of bringing you carefully cultivated craft beer to drink, local musicians to listen to and beautiful views to enjoy, we are closing our doors. Know that this decision has been a difficult one,” read the message.

USA, MA: Tree House Brewing plans new location in Charlton
|
The Charlton-based Tree House Brewing announced on November 6 that it plans to open a new location next year at the site of the former Channing Bete Co. on Routes 5 and 10 in South Deerfield.
“Tree House will open an expansive, beautifully located facility in Deerfield in 2021 … relieving pressure from our home campus and making the experience of having a beer with us much more pleasant all around,” the company wrote on its website.
The location will be a taproom, an “On the Fly” (can pick up) location, and more, according to the post. The company plans to open in winter of 2021 as an On the Fly location, and — depending on the COVID-19 situation — hopes to open in summer 2021 with a “full onsite experience that will mirror, and in many ways improve upon, the experience in Charlton.”
Tree House Brewing, which also announced this week the planned opening of another new location in Sandwich, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Carolyn Shores Ness, chairwoman of the Deerfield Select Board, said in an email statement that the town is “thrilled” to welcome the company.
“The expansion to Deerfield solidifies their commitment to Massachusetts and New England,” she wrote.

USA, NC: Free Range Brewing to open second location in Charlotte
|
Free Range Brewing is doubling down on Charlotte, the Charlotte Business Journal reported on November 9.
The craft brewery’s second location is set to open on November 13 at Camp North End, a 76-acre adaptive-reuse project by ATCO Properties & Management and Shorenstein Properties
That family-run brewery got its start in Villa Heights in 2015. It is owned and operated by Jason, Sarah, Jeff and Brittany Alexander.
Free Range has built a following for its small-batch craft beers. Each beer features, on average, 95% locally sourced ingredients.
The Camp North End location will offer a variety of beers, including fan favorites like You’re Everything I Knead, a sourdough IPA, and the Cream of the Crop cream ale.
“Just like our mission and intentions, Camp North End is fostering community, creativity and connections in a purposeful and meaningful way,” says Sarah Alexander, co-owner and community engagement director.
The brewery will serve an extensive wine list and a curated selection of beers from breweries they admire. To-go brews will be available.
The taproom clocks in at 1,544 square feet. It is located in the refurbished building at 301 Camp Road.

UK: Coronavirus expected to exacerbate decline in number of independent breweries - Camra
|
Coronavirus has had a “devastating” impact on the UK’s pubs and will exacerbate the decline in the number of independent breweries – for the first time in nearly two decades – an influential consumer guide has warned, The Guardian reported.
Thousands of pubs and breweries that survived the first lockdown are now fighting to stay afloat amid a slump in business following ongoing restrictions and curfews that could “make or break” the industry, according to the 2021 Good Beer Guide, published on October 29 by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra).
The annual guide – now in its 48th edition – is considered the definitive guide to the best pints of real ale pulled in the UK and this year features 4,500 pubs, from country inns to no-frills micropubs and taprooms. Despite being hampered by lockdown and ongoing restrictions, thousands of volunteers worked to compile this year’s entries. There are an estimated 40,800 pubs in England and Wales.

Australia: Coopers enjoys 3.9% sales volume increase in 2019-20 financial year
|
South Australian brewer Coopers is crediting a national consumer-led push towards trusted, locally-made beer brands and a move to more canned products for a 3.9 per cent rise in sales in the 2019-20 financial year, The Lead South Australia reported on November 11.
Results released on November 11 by Coopers Brewery are an improvement on the 2 per cent sales volume increase in 2018-19 and a significant turnaround from 2017-18 when its beer sales volumes fell for the first time in 24 years.
The Adelaide-based brewer has reported a before-tax profit for 2019-20 of A$34.3 million, similar to the level recorded in the 2018 financial year, and a strong recovery from the A$23.1 million it reported in 2019.
Home brewers also did their bit to boost Coopers’ bottom line during the COVID-19 lockdown. Although retail sales experienced a decline in the first half of the financial year, outstanding growth of 166 per cent from March to June resulted in DIY beer concentrate sales rising by 6 per cent, from 2,600 tonnes last year to 2,757 tonnes this year.
Malted barley production increased 30 per cent, from 44,300 tonnes in 2018-19 to 57,900 tonnes, reflecting a growing demand across Asia for high-quality malt.

New Zealand: Brewers facing shortages of cans and lids
|
Many New Zealand breweries are on edge as they prepare for the holiday production push thanks to a shortage of cans and – more importantly – lids, the Australian Brews News reported on November 10.
Joe Wood, owner of Liberty Brewing and president of the Brewers Guild of New Zealand, said a number of different issues have combined to put the squeeze on brewers and he was personally affected by a shortage of lids, or ends as they are known.
“Ten days ago now – Friday last week – I got a phone call saying we can’t get lids,” Wood said.
“We were in a tough position. We were looking at shutting the brewery down as 70 per cent of what we make goes into cans and if you can’t get lids what are you going to do?”
Wood changed supplier from Orora and was able to secure ends from rival Visy. But that came with a huge cost.
“It meant we needed to get new tooling for the canning machine. The profiles of the lids are different and the seaming tooling we had only worked for Orora lids.

UK & Ireland: Diageo recalling all of its newly launched non-alcoholic stout
|
The drinks group Diageo is recalling all of its newly launched non-alcoholic stout because of “microbiological contamination”, only two weeks after it was launched, The Guardian reported on November 11.
It warned that cans of the new Guinness 0.0 drink, which took four years to develop, may be “unsafe to consume” and advised people who had purchased the alcohol-free beer to dispose of it or return it to where it was bought.
The contamination is understood to have occurred during the production process at its St James’s Gate brewery in Dublin and tests are being carried out to establish the cause. In the meantime, production and canning has been halted.
A Guinness spokesperson said: “As a precautionary measure we are recalling Guinness 0.0 in Great Britain because of a microbiological contamination which may make some cans of Guinness 0.0 unsafe to consume.
“The issue is isolated to Guinness 0.0 and does not impact any other Guinness variants or brands. If you have bought Guinness 0.0 do not consume it. Instead, please return the product to your point of purchase for a full refund. We are sorry that this has happened.” Consumers are being directed to a Q&A on the Guinness website.
