Jamaica: Desnoes & Geddes new managing director aims at scaling up production, sales and profits, and reducing operating costs
|
Luis Prata has a reputation as a turnaround manager. But that is not his mission in Jamaica, the Jamaica Gleaner reported on November 22.
The new managing director of Desnoes & Geddes Limited, which trades as Red Stripe Jamaica, has joined a company that is already seen as well run.
So Prata’s goal is to dramatically scale up production, sales and profits, and slash operating costs. And, like others before him, he is looking to the Jamaican Government to cut the company a break.
The pitch that Red Stripe is teeing up surrounds its estimations of the brewery’s cumulative value-added contribution to the Jamaican economy in revenues along the value chain, salaries and taxes, which Prata said totalled $21 billion last year, or roughly one per cent of Jamaica’s GDP.
Red Stripe, which was taken over by Dutch beermaker Heineken four years ago, says it generated $5 billion in margins for its trade partners locally, and created 446 direct jobs and 6,700 indirect ones, which it says is 0.5 per cent of the national workforce.
The bulk of that calculated value chain impact, the company says, goes towards government taxes, which amounted to $7 billion in 2014 and $11 billion in 2018.
It’s not the first

South Africa: Distell not giving up its fight against AB InBev
|
Brewer Distell’s attempt to get its rival, AB InBev, declared in breach of its merger conditions with SABMiller has fizzled out. But it’s not giving up just yet, The Africa Report said on November 19.
In its complaint lodged with the Competition Commission, Distell accused the merged entity of removing “competitors’ advertising material from outlets”. But the Competition Commission found that “the conditions had not been breached,” according to the Competition Tribunal.
Distell is pursuing the matter further with the Competition Tribunal.
Distell spokesperson, Dennis Matsane says the company has asked the Tribunal “to issue a notice of apparent breach of merger conditions and that the conduct relied on by Distell be fully investigated.”
In June 2016, the Tribunal granted conditional approval for the AB InBev and SABMiller tie-up in what was dubbed the “megabrew” deal. At the time, the transaction was valued at $100bn, resulting in the creation of the world’s biggest brewer with annual sales of $55bn.
Before the deal, AB InBev was the largest beer brewer globally, while SABMiller occupied second place. The transaction triggered competition concerns in multiple jurisdictions because AB InBev was the dominant brewer in the developed world, while SABMiller had conquered emerging markets.
The deal resulted in Budweiser, Stella

Denmark: Alcohol consumption drops to 9.1 litres per capita in 2017
|
While Danes were once in the vanguard of Europe's drinking statistics, the country’s alcohol consumption is now closer to that of its peers, The Local Denmark reports.
Over the past ten years, Denmark has seen one of the largest drops in alcohol consumption amongst OECD countries, from 12.1 litres of pure alcohol annually per adult (aged 16 and over) in 2007, to 9.1 litres in 2017.
As such, the Scandinavian country is now not far from the average consumption in the OECD countries of 8.9 litres, according to a new OECD report comparing health conditions in its 36 member states.
People in Denmark still pour considerably more beer, wine and spirits into their glasses than their Nordic counterparts, however.
Consumption per person is 6 litres in Norway, 7.1 in Sweden and 8.4 in Finland, the OECD report states.
“(Alcohol) consumption in Denmark is still too high. My concern is particularly for young people, who still have a high consumption,” said Karin Friis Bach, chairperson for the health committee of Danish Regions, the interest organization for Denmark’s five regional health authorities.
A study in June this year by Danish research institute Vidensråd for Forebyggelse (Knowledge Council for Prevention) showed that young people in Denmark start drinking alcohol

Australia: Scottish craft brewer BrewDog opens new production facility in Brisbane
|
Scottish craft brewer BrewDog has opened its A$30 mln ($20.4 mln) production brewery and taproom in Brisbane, Queensland, the Drinks Insight Network reported on November 21.
The DogTap Brisbane is reported to be BrewDog’s first in the Southern Hemisphere.
Queensland minister for state development and manufacturing Cameron Dick said: “BrewDog were looking to establish a brewery in Australia, but their final investment decision pitted Brisbane, Queensland against Newcastle, New South Wales.
“Craft brewing in Queensland continues to grow and thrive, and with BrewDog also selling local craft beers and planning collaborations in the future, our industry’s global reputation and reach will only go further.”
Dick added that the Queensland government has agreed to offer A$150 mln ($102 mln) to the Scottish brewer through its Advance Queensland Industry Attraction Fund.
To support and encourage local Queensland brewers, the brewery and taproom will also feature local beer brands such as Range Brewing, Balter, Currumbin Valley Brewery, Black Hops, Aether and Brouhaha.
Equipped with a line-up of nearly 28 taps, DogTap Brisbane will also offer non-alcoholic brews to its customers.
BrewDog Australia operations manager Calvin McDonald said: “When BrewDog started to look at establishing in Australia, the first thing we noticed was the exciting phase the Queensland craft brewing scene
