Barley news Canada: Barley production forecast to increase by almost 20% in 2019-20
For 2019-20, total barley production in Canada is estimated to increase by almost 20% from 2018-19 to close to 10 mln tonnes, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its November report. About 60% of the increase is anticipated to come from Alberta, the leading barley producing province in Canada, and almost 39% from Saskatchewan.

Total supply is expected to increase by 13% as the increase in production more-than offsets the historically low level of carry-in stocks.

The Prairie barley harvest has been struggling with wet weather. It was nearly 95% complete, as of the last week of October. Average yields varied across the Prairie Provinces. Barley production in the Prairie Provinces accounts for about 95% of total barley production in Canada. Considering the unharvested area in the Prairie Provinces at this time and the continued wet and cold weather in November, barley production in Canada will likely be lower than Statistics Canada’s (STC) September estimate.

The quality of the early harvested barley crop is generally good but the late harvested crop is expected to show a decrease in quality.

Domestic use of barley is expected to increase from 2018-19, reflecting stronger feed use. Exports are expected to decrease due to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Kirin Holdings subsidiary Lion Little World Beverages acquires Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing
Fort Collins, Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing, one of the largest independent U.S. craft breweries, announced on November 19 it would sell 100% of the company to an Australasian subsidiary owned by Japan’s Kirin Holdings called Lion Little World Beverages.

Specific financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but sources with knowledge of the deal said Lion would spend between $350 and $400 million to acquire the country’s fourth-largest craft brewery.

It’s the third time that the Fat Tire maker has transacted in the last two decades. Brewery cofounder Kim Jordan sold 41% of the business to an employee stock ownership program (ESOP) in 2000. Thirteen years later, the ESOP purchased the remaining shares owned by Jordan and other stakeholders.

The deal with Lion is expected to close by the end of the year, pending regulatory and ESOP shareholder approval, the company said via a press release.

Current New Belgium CEO Steve Fechheimer will continue to lead the company, and the company’s headquarters will remain in Fort Collins.

Jordan will also “remain deeply involved” in the business and continue to advise Lion as well as its global craft partners. In addition to Australia’s Little Creatures, Lion’s craft beer interests outside of the U.S. include Magic ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Craft Brew Alliance reports modest depletions growth in Q3
A day after announcing Anheuser-Busch will acquire the remaining stake in Craft Brew Alliance (CBA), the Portland, Oregon-headquartered craft beer company reported modest depletions growth in its third-quarter earnings report, boosted by sales of its Kona Brewing brand, Brewbound reported.

Portfolio-wide CBA depletions (sales-to-retailers) increased 2%, driven by Kona Brewing’s depletions growth of 7%.

“CBA’s third quarter depletions growth, fueled by Kona, is remarkable on a number of levels — in absolute terms, in contrast to the market overall, and notwithstanding its absolute size already as a top 10 national craft brand,” Andy Thomas, the CEO of CBA, said in a press release.

Total CBA shipments (sales-to-wholesalers) were down 2% for the quarter, while Kona shipments were flat, which the company attributed to “efforts to rebalance inventory levels.”

Net sales decreased 10.8% for the quarter, to $47.2 million. Owned beer sales decreased 7.4%, to $39.5, million for Q3, which the company attributed to price discounts and the decrease in shipments. Company gross margin declined to 28.2% for the quarter, down 3.4% from the same period in 2018. In Q3, beer gross margin declined to 30.8%, down 4% from the same time last year. Meanwhile, brewpub gross margin improved 310 basis points to 10.2%.

Brewery news USA, AL: Oak Mountain Brewing Company hopes to launch in Pelham by spring 2020
A new brewery is opening up in Pelham, WBRC reported on November 13.

Oak Mountain Brewing Company hopes to open by spring of 2020 in a building near the intersection of Alabama 119 and U.S. 31.

The brewery plans to have a number of different food trucks about five times a week and live music 4-5 nights a week.

Barley news USA: Growing interest in craft whiskey helping barley growers
A growing interest in U.S. craft whiskey is helping make money for barley growers who previously planted the crop without the aim of making a profit, Bloomberg reported.

Dave Hedlin, a third-generation farmer in Washington state’s Skagit Valley, used to grow the grain largely to improve his soil and break crop-disease cycles after the harvest of vegetables such as cabbage, spinach and beets.

Now, he’s raising it in collaboration with Skagit Valley Malting and Seattle-based whiskey maker Westland Distillery, which is owned by Remy Cointreau SA. Hedlin’s move is part of a trend that has boosted barley plantings in Washington by 12% to 95,000 acres this year, marking a nascent revival after a collapse from peaks of as much as 1.2 million in 1985.

That’s tied to a rise in demand for U.S. craft whiskey, sales of which rose 25% to 3.3 million nine-liter cases last year. That outpaced overall whiskey sales growth of 8%, according to data from IWSR Drinks Market Analysis. Craft varieties make up about 10% of the total volume.

Catering to craft-beverage makers has allowed Washington farmers to add value to a part of the rotation where there’s literally no value, said Stephen Jones, a wheat breeder and director of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Florida Avenue Brewing approved to expand into lager location
Florida Avenue Brewing announced its award-winning craft brewery and restaurant has been approved to expand from its original Seminole Heights location into Pasco County's Wesley Chapel, Patch.com reported on November 13.

The new facility, slated to open in late March 2020, will boast 34,000 feet of space, allowing more customers to experience the destination and increase product distribution across the Southeast United States.

"We're thrilled to be growing Florida Avenue Brewing into Pasco County," said Anthony Derby, CEO of Florida Avenue Brewing. The new location is a refurbishment of a long-closed and abandoned building at 2029 Arrowgrass Drive in Wesley Chapel. The space will include a full-service restaurant, tasting room, event space for corporate and musical events, and increased capabilities for product canning and distribution.

Brewery news Vietnam: Heineken sells over 5 million Sabeco shares
Dutch brewer Heineken sold over 5 million Sabeco shares on November 15, bringing its stake in Vietnam’s biggest brewer Sabeco down to 4.32 percent, VnExpress International reported.

The shares, equivalent to an approximate 0.81 percent stake, were sold to buyers whose identities have not been disclosed via an agreement, the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE) reported.

The sale was worth over VND1.2 trillion ($51.79 million), at VND234,000 ($10.1) per share, VND18,000 ($0.78) lower than its stock opening price on November 15, according to HoSE.

On the stock market, the Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corporation's SAB shares have been falling or stalling for the last 12 consecutive sessions.

The remaining 4.32 percent stake in the Vietnamese brewer is held by Heineken, its regional subsidiary Heineken Asia Pacific, and related companies.

Sabeco is owned 53.59 percent by Vietnam Beverage, a subsidiary of Thai beverage company ThaiBev. The Vietnamese government, represented by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, owns a 36 percent stake in the company.

Thaibev had bought its stake in Sabeco when the government publicly auctioned them in December 2017. At the time, Heineken, who had held shares in Sabeco since 2008, also submitted a bid but lost to Thaibev.

Brewery news Nigeria: AB InBev commits to investing more than N123 bln in its Nigerian operations
The world’s largest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) has committed to investing more than N123 billion in its Nigerian operations in a major capital injection expected to consolidate its push for the greater share of sub-Saharan African markets, The Nation Newspaper reported on November 18.

The multinational drink and brewing giant based in Leuven, Belgium holds majority equity stake of 75.1 per cent in International Breweries Plc. It has committed to injecting new capital into the company through a rights issue.

International Breweries will raise N164.39 billion through a rights issue of 18.266 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each at N9 per share which will be pre-allotted on the basis of 17 new ordinary shares of 50 kobo each for every eight ordinary shares of 50 kobo each held as at the close of business on November 6, 2019. With the rights’ ratio, about 13.72 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each will be pre-allotted to AB InBev.

Sources said AB InBev was in support of the rights issue and had committed to participating fully in the new capital raising exercise.

International Breweries has filed for final regulatory approvals for the new capital raising, after shareholders approved the recapitalisation exercise.

Brewery news UK: Pub company Fuller, Smith & Turner warns of higher than expected costs after selling its beer business to Asahi
UK pub company Fuller, Smith & Turner has warned the cost of a ‘complex separation period’ after selling its beer business to Asahi were higher than expected, The Morning Advertiser reported on November 15.

Announcing its financial results for the 32-week period to 9 November, Fuller’s revealed a total sales increase of 5.2% from its estate of 215 managed pubs and hotels, in addition to like-for-like growth of 2.3%.

However, Fuller’s, which sold its brewing business to Asahi for £250 mln in January – meaning that its historic Griffin brewery and its Cornish Orchards, Dark Star and Nectar Imports brands will also move to Asahi's ownership – revealed additional cost had been incurred to “assist the business through this complex separation period”.

“It is anticipated that the current level of overhead will continue until the TSA agreement concludes by May 2020. Thereafter, the Company will be able to transition to a structure more appropriate for a focused premium pubs and hotels business,” the operator’s latest statement continued.

Consequently, Fuller’s stated that adjusted profit for the full year ending 28 March 2020 will be in the region of £31 mln – “broadly in line with the prior year on a comparable basis”.

Brewery news Ireland: Carlsberg launches Carlsberg 0.0 pilsner in Ireland
Danish brewer Carlsberg has launched a new non-alcoholic beer into the Irish market, the Checkout reported on November 18.

The Carlsberg 0.0 pilsner has zero alcohol, zero sugar and 46 calories per bottle.

"Balance is a way of life for the Danes," said Hannah Todd, Brand Manager, Carlsberg.

"They like to savour the everyday, whether meeting up with friends in the pub after work and cycling home or attending a gig and getting up for a park run the next day – with Carlsberg 0.0 you can choose both."

"The Irish and the Danes share similar values, and with an upward trend in Ireland of consumers seeking more balanced drinking choices, we’re confident that this new beer will go down incredibly well.”

The brewing process starts with premium barley malt, hops and water – ingredients used for all Carlsberg beers. Yeast is added to start the fermentation and after brewing, the alcohol is gently removed, the brewer explained.

The beer is filtered which helps it develop a taste like original Carlsberg Beer.

New Carlsberg 0.0 will be available nationally from end of November and will be available in 330ml bottles in pubs, off-licences and supermarkets throughout Ireland. A 330ml can will hit fridges and shelves from ...More info on site
