USA: Craft beer forecast to represent about 12% of total beer market in the US this year
|
Craft beer‘s days of heady double-digit growth may be over, but it is expected to produce volume growth of 5 to 6 percent this year and outperform the broader category, according to a new report.
Susquehanna analyst Pablo Zuanic said craft beer is forecast to represent about 12 percent of total beer volume this year, up slightly from 2016 levels. He‘s basing the information on briefings with the Brewer Association‘s chief economist, Bart Watson.
Most of the new volume growth this year within the craft beer segment will come from the smaller breweries, the analyst said. Also, he points out that retail shelves won‘t help much since stores are not adding space to the packaged category.
The analyst said what‘s growing is essentially “concentrated mainly among the local and regional players,” not the big-name brands like Boston Beer and Sierra Nevada.
As a result, Zuanic wrote that he‘s “somewhat concerned” when it comes to medium-term outlook. Last month, Boston Beer reported weaker-than-expected revenue as its flagship Sam Adams and Angry Orchard brands remained challenged.
“Certain big breweries are struggling to maintain volume and any kind of growth,” said Jeremy Cowan, founder of Shmaltz Brewing, an upstate New York-based boutique brewer. However, he said, there‘s still

USA: AB InBev announces acquisition of remaining 68.8% of Craft Brew Alliance
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev and Craft Brew Alliance (CBA) announced on November 11 that the world’s largest beer company will acquire the remaining 68.8% of CBA that it did not own for $16.50 per share in cash, Brewbound reported.
The deal is expected to close in 2020, subject to customary closing conditions, including approval of the CBA shareholders unaffiliated with AB InBev and regulatory approvals.
At the close of trading Monday, CBA stock was valued at $7.33 per share. However, in after-hours trading, the stock jumped to more than $16 per share.
“By combining our resources, our talented teammates and dynamic brands, we will look to nurture the growth of CBA’s existing portfolio as we continue investing in innovation to meet the changing needs of today’s beverage consumers, all while delivering certainty of value to our shareholders,” Andy Thomas, the CEO of CBA, said in a press release.
“Our partnership with CBA goes back many years and we look forward to supporting CBA as they continue to bring great products to beer drinkers across the U.S.,” Anheuser-Busch CEO Michel Doukeris added in the release.
CBA brands include Kona Brewing, Widmer Brothers, Redhook, Omission, Square Mile Cider, Wynwood Brewing, Cisco Brewers and Appalachian Mountain Brewery, as well as

Spain & USA: Mahou San Miguel acquires 30% of Colorado’s Avery Brewing
|
One of Spain‘s leading beer brewers acquired a 30 percent stake in Avery Brewing Co. as part of a mutual decision to help the Boulder brewery‘s future growth, the Stock Daily Dish reported on November 12.
Mahou San Miguel and Avery Brewing announced the deal on November 12, with the Spanish brewer saying the partnership is part of its own vision to explore international opportunities by partnering with locals who know their markets.
“We share the commitment with the communities in which we are present, our long-term vision, concern for the sustainability and well-being of individuals and our aim of doing things right, placing the consumer always at the centre of our decisions,” Eduardo Petrossi, CEO of Madrid-based Mahou San Miguel, said in a statement. “This operation strengthens us as the driving Spanish brewer behind the craft sector and will reinforce our positioning in the United States.”
Financial terms were not disclosed. But Avery founder Adam Avery will continue to run the Boulder operation and now can tap the expertise of Mahou San Miguel as needed. Avery and his father, Larry, founded the company in 1993. The Averys are the only other investors and remain as majority owners.

UK: Innis & Gunn hoping to secure £3 million in investment for new Edinburgh brewery
|
Scottish craft beer maker Innis & Gunn has announced plans to secure a major cash injection to drive proposals for a new Edinburgh brewery, the Yahoo Finance UK reported on November 11.
The company hopes to secure £3 million in investment to fund the new brewery as well as continue to open bars in Scotland.
Innis & Gunn said its three current bars in Scotland have prospered amid the recent surge in popularity for craft beer and it hopes to open another two sites annually over the next three years.
Founder and master brewer Dougal Gunn Sharp said the new brewery is in the next stage in the company’s evolution after rapid growth in beer sales.
The launch, which the firm claims will be the first major brewery in Edinburgh for 150 years, is expected to open in 2021 and create around 30 jobs.
Innis & Gunn plans to fund the expansion with its third crowdfunding campaign, to raise £3 million from supporters of the brand through funding platform Seedrs.
Growth has continued over the past three years since its previous funding campaign, pushing its sales to more than £25 million in turnover and almost 21 million pints of beer in total.
Mr Gunn Sharp said: “There

UK & Ireland: Grolsch beer no longer available in the UK and Ireland
|
Beer brand Grolsch, with its distinctive swingtop bottle caps, will no longer be sold in the UK after 35 years on store shelves, the Sailisbury Journal reported on November 9.
Bosses at parent company Asahi agreed to end a brewing contract with Molson Coors after the larger was "delisted" by Tesco and Asda in its supermarkets.
A spokesperson for Asahi said: "As a result [of the end of the brewing deal] the Grolsch brand is no longer available in the UK and Ireland."
Asked if Grolsch – founded in in Holland in 1615 – will return to the UK and Ireland, an Asahi spokesperson declined to comment.
The decision was first reported in The Grocer UK, which added that pub industry sources revealed supplies of the lager had dried up.
It is thought that Grolsch, which was once a popular choice with drinkers partially because of its unique bottle design, has been hit by the rise in popularity of craft beer, lower alcohol alternatives and cheaper rivals.
Asahi acquired the Grolsch brand from Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016.

Thailand: ThaiBev celebrates 25th anniversary of its Chang beer with new Chang cold brew lager
|
Thai Beverage (ThaiBev) on November 7 celebrated the 25th anniversary of its popular Chang beer with an event at Bangkok’s Factoria restaurant and toasted its birthday with Chang cold brew lager, which is being produced especially for the silver jubilee, the Buriram Times reported.
Kosit Suksingha, the company’ chief executive for Beer Business Thailand and chief of the Supply Chain Management group, said the new product has been well received. “Its success is also a success in terms of promoting the relationship between our brand and consumers in line with our ‘Chang, Fulfilling Your Friendship’.”
Chang cold brew lager is made with 100-per-cent malt using the cold brew process – beer filtration under sub- zero temperature. The process produces a beer with that’s very different in taste and fragrance from other brews.
The highlight of the night was a talk by ThaiBev’s experienced brew master, who explained about the new product and showed how to best enjoy the drink from pouring to supping.
Last month, the company’s president and chief executive, Thapana Sirivadhanabhakdi said that ThaiBev will focus on raising business values, combining products to increase market capital and collaborating with global partners in innovative, healthy cannabis-based products as it looks towards 2025.
