Malt news Vietnam: InterMalt Viet Nam announces appointments of Commercial and Operations Directors
InterMalt Viet Nam announced on February 4 the appointments of two key management positions - Commercial & Operations Director.

Rob Wicks has joined the management team as Commercial Director. Rob will be responsible for managing the malt sales and barley procurement departments. Rob brings with him 33 years of experience in the malting industry and a deep knowledge of South East Asian malt markets. Prior to joining InterMalt Rob was with Cargill Malt (formerly known as Joe White Malting) as their General Manager – Commercial Australasia.

Matthias Benz has joined the management team in the position of Operations Director. Matthias has over 20 years’ experience as a brewer, maltster and technologist. He is a specialist in operating start up malt plants having done so in more than 4 countries. Prior to joining InterMalt, Matthias was the head technologist for Buhler Malting Germany.

InterMalt’s facility is currently under construction and will commence production in February 2017. The facility will produce 110,000mt of malt per annum in stage one and 220,000mt in stage two. Construction for stage two will commence in 2018.

The plant is located at the Cai Mep Agri Port, Ba Ria Vung Tau 80km south-east of Ho Chi Minh City. Buhler’s malting division ...More info on site

Brazil’s President Dilma Rouseff inaugurated Ambev’s new brewery in Uberlandia, Minas Gerais, on February 4, Diario Domestico reported.

The new brewery is Ambev’s fourth production facility in the state and one of the largest such facilities in the world.

The company’s investments in the brewery totalled R$770 mln. The facility’s current production capacity is 600 mln litres per year and Ambev intends to increase that volume, it is reported.

Brewery news India: Heineken denies industry talk about intentions of buying out Vijay Mallya and PAC stake in United Breweries
Heineken International is likely to buy out Vijay Mallya and PAC stake in United Breweries at Rs 920/share, Moneycontrol.com cited undisclosed sources on February 4.

Post the deal, Heineken is likely to reshuffle the entire United Breweries board. If the deal goes through, Heineken will gain management control of UBL.

Senior executives from Heineken are in India to finalise deal, sources add. UB Group may retain below 1.5 percent stake in UBL post deal. Heineken currently holds 42.3 percent and UB Group holds 32.29 percent in United Breweries.

However, when contacted, UB Group said the information is wholly incorrect, while Heineken said: "Our company policy is that we do not comment on speculation in the marketplace."


Brewery news Japan: Asahi Breweries reports 2% increase in January beer sales
Japan’s Asahi Breweries reported a 2% increase in its total beer sales in January with new genre beer category sales up 14%.

Regular beer volumes declined by 2% and low-malt happoshu beer sales dropped by 3% last month.

The company said its Clear Asahi brand’s total sales registered a 21.5% increase in demand last month.

Barley news Ireland: Spring barley yields increase constantly over the past 10 years
Spring barley yields have increased constantly over the past 10 years, according to Teagasc’s Tillage Advisor Ciaran Hickey, AgriLand reported on February 4.

Speaking at the Spring Tillage Seminar in Co. Wexford recently, he said barley growers should consider variety choice carefully before sowing a crop which may not suit their system.

Hickey also discussed the traits of malting barley varieties growers can sow this spring from the Department of Agriculture’s recommend lists.

Both KWS Irina and Propino are on the recommended list for 2016, he said, and barley growers are pretty used to growing these varieties at this stage.

However, Hickey said that Propino has a small chink in its armour, as the enzyme which keeps the skin on the grain is very weak.

Some malting growers may also have the opportunity to grow Sienna, he said, and it has an excellent kilogrammes per hectolitre (KPH) of 69.7, brilliant grain quality and very strong straw.

Hickey said that this variety is a non-glysodic nitrile variety, which means that it is suitable for distilling.

However, he said that it must be watched in high fertility soils as the Department’s trial in 2014 showed that it quite prone to lodging in very high nitrogen sites.
