Whisky news USA: Distilled spirits continue on upward trend in 2015
The US distilled spirits industry continued on an upward trend in 2015 with a 4.1% increase in supplier sales and 2.3% uptick in volumes, according to the Distilled Spirits Council.

The spirits segment also reported 2015 as its sixth consecutive year of squeaking by the beer industry in terms of market share gains, having seen 6.7 points in total market share gains compared to beer since 2000.

Delivering the most spirited sales growth performances in 2015 were Irish whiskey (19.9%), cognac (16.2%), single-malt scotch (13.5%), tequila (9.4%), and American whiskey (7.8%).

One reason is that younger drinkers aren't drinking as much beer today, according to a Gallup survey, and light beer's decline is particularly dragging down beer's market share. The growth of whiskey and tequila, increased spirits exports, and innovative products across categories have also contributed to the improvement in spirits' market share.

Demand for American whiskey, which includes Tennessee, bourbon, and rye, is soaring both in the U.S. and abroad as global consumer interest in this segment continues to increase. In 2015, American whiskeys led export volumes at 4% growth compared to 3.4% for overall spirits exports. Rye whiskey volumes have grown 536% since 2009. Bourbon production in Kentucky hit its ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: New Belgium delays opening of Asheville brewery
New Belgium has pushed back the opening of its Asheville Liquid Center tasting room until March and brewery tours until April, company spokeswoman Susanne Hackett said. The Liquid Center was originally announced to open this month, with tours beginning in March, Geenville News reported on February 2.

The delays come as New Belgium continues to test brew at its massive West Asheville brewery on the French Broad River, Hackett said, "We have finished some batches of beer," she said. "We want to get the beer out the door as soon as possible, but we want to get the right beer," she said. "We are taking our time with that."

New Belgium is testing its brewing system with batches of Fat Tire Amber Ale, 1554 Black Lager and Ranger IPA. Those beers were chosen for testing because of their different profiles and processes for brewing.

Construction is down to "the last 15 percent" at the brewery, which will be Asheville's largest, and one of the biggest in Western North Carolina, along with Sierra Nevada in Mills River and Oskar ;Blues in Brevard. The New Belgium brewery itself will be 127,000 square feet and The Liquid Center tasting room will be 6,000 square ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: The Virginia Beer Co. scheduled to open to the public around mid-March
After more than three years of searching for the right space in Williamsburg, buying and installing state-of-the art equipment and transforming a former auto body shop into a brewery, two College of William & Mary graduates are weeks away from opening The Virginia Beer Co., Williamsburg Yorktown Daily reported on February 3.

The Virginia Beer Co. began brewing its first batch of craft beer Jan. 24 and plans to brew eight total before opening to the public around mid-March.

The first batch – the start of a series of single hop session beers – is being brewed in a five-barrel system, a set of equipment co-owners Chris Smith and Robby Willey said will not only help their brewery stand out in an industry burgeoning in the Williamsburg area but allow their customers to have a unique experience each time they visit 401 Second St. in York County.

With a five-barrel and a 30-barrel system producing beer simultaneously, the brewery can use the smaller system to offer a variety in its taproom throughout the year and the larger one to produce beers for both the taproom and distribution.

They do not have plans to launch with a signature beer; instead they expect customer demand ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Cape Cod Beer poised to double beer production
Cape Cod Beer of Hyannis, MA is poised to install a new brew house system that can double its beer production in the same amount of time, Barnstable Patriot reported on January 29.

Beth Marcus, co-owner of Cape Cod Beer, said that next month the brewery’s Hyannis location will welcome the new 30-barrel brew house system, an upgrade from its current 15-barrel system. “We’re super excited,” she said. “Part of it is we’re in an industry that’s grown enormously.”

Marcus said the new equipment both answers a need for efficiency in the brewing process, and puts the company in a better position to deal with greater demand anticipated this summer. During the summer, when the company’s business peaks, staff brews beer 20 times a week – four times a day, five days a week. Someone starts at 4 a.m. and someone else finishes at midnight, she said, adding that the company plans to serve up more beer this summer than last.

“The problem is when you’re brewing basically at capacity, if you’re brewing it at every possible slot, there’s no room for error,” she said.

With the new system, the company will be able to brew 10 times a week and produce the same ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Wishful Acres Farm and Brewery planning to open northwest of Freeport by fall
Another craft microbrewery is planning to open northwest of Freeport, jumping into an industry that has been growing in recent years both in Stephenson County and nationwide, Journal Standard reported on January 30.

Wishful Acres Farm of Lena, which raises organic vegetable, herbs and fruit, is rebranding itself as Wishful Acres Farm and Brewery. Owners Nate and Penny Peterson anticipate producing craft beer for public consumption by late summer or early fall.

"It's pretty exciting," Penny said. "This is something we've talked about for five years, and every batch of beer will have something from our farm as part of the ingredients."

As the family has been considering the expansion, craft brewing has been growing across the United States. Between 2004 and 2014, the production rate of craft brews quadrupled from 3.75 million barrels a year to 17.6 million barrels a year, including a 5.5 million barrel increase in 2014, according to a report by the Brewer’s Association.

While data isn’t available for 2015, the continued growth can be seen in Stephenson County. Freeport’s first craft brewery in years, the Generations Brewing Co., opened in 2013 and in September, Freeport hosted its third Pretzel City Brewfest.

Lena Brewing Company celebrated its one-year anniversary this month. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Black Flag Brewing Co and Bulk Head Brewing Co joining Columbia beer scene
More IPAs and stouts will soon be coming from Columbia. Black Flag Brewing Co and Bulk Head Brewing Co are the latest craft beer makers taking advantage of loosening regulations in Howard County and the state, BisNow TV reported on January 29.

Black Flag Brewing Co will likely open its 9k SF warehouse and tasting room in April, after its county liquor license hearing, founder Brian Gaylor says. About a dozen investors are spending $1.1 mln to open in the industrial building at 9315 Snowden River Pkwy and expect to produce up to 2,000 barrels the first year. Brian, right, is next to his assistant brewer Warren Hendrickson at an equipment supplier factory in Nebraska. Brian declined to name his head brewer just yet, as he’s currently employed elsewhere.

Black Flag will sell double IPAs, Belgian saison and breakfast stout in the 80-seat tasting room and in liquor stores, starting in Howard County. Guests can bring their own food or purchase some from a food truck parked outside. Beach-themed brewery Bulk Head Brewing will serve 10 beers on tap once it opens in March, says founder and head brewer Joshua Matthews. The 7k SF brewery and tasting room will open Thursday through ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Pizza Port Brewing Co. coming to the Sacramento area
Craft beers keep flowing in the Sacramento area, where brew drinkers can’t seem to get enough, The Sacramento Bee reported on January 30.

With annual beer events drawing enormous crowds and craft brewpubs and bottle shops continually springing up throughout the region, others outside Northern California are taking notice.

That includes Pizza Port Brewing Co., a Southern California craft brewer whose products are scheduled to hit local store shelves in February.

The company is partnering with Auburn-based Mussetter Distributing to put product on the shelves of area stores that include Raley’s, BevMo and Whole Foods.

“Our official launch events begin on Feb. 11 and will feature not only our core brands but specialty offerings from each of our five brewpubs,” said Pizza Port spokesman Joe Arguello.

In 2014, the most recent year in which full statistics are available, U.S. craft beer sales soared 17.6 percent over the prior year to nearly 21.8 million barrels, according to the Boulder, Colo.-based Brewers Association. In an overall U.S. beer market of $101.5 billion in 2014, craft sales totaled $19.6 billion.

Through 2014, the Brewers Association said California ranked first nationally in the number of craft breweries with 431, or about 12.5 percent of the U.S. total. The Golden State’s ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NV: Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. forced to close temporarily
Carson City's Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. closed temporarily on Jan. 27 since it has been without a working brewery for almost four months, Reno Gazette Journal reported.

"Right now we're losing a lot of money," said owner Michael Candelario. "It's not financially feasible to maintain operation without brewery revenue."

Candelario said their landlord owns and is responsible for maintenance of the brewery equipment. The boiler, which heats the water used to make beer, is broken, preventing them from making any. A Jan. 28 lawsuit from building-owner Steve Neighbors includes a lease agreement indicating it is the responsibility of the tenant to fix brewery equipment.

"After three months of no beer, we figured we should stop running the restaurant and focus on fixing the problem," he said.

Breweries make the majority of their revenue from high-volume beer sales instead of food. Candelario informed employees of the closure and encouraged them to find new employment.

"We're extremely thankful for our loyal customers in Carson City, which is why we are working closely with our property owner to get this resolved as soon as possible, and we are eager to continue brewing and doing what we love most,” he said in a statement.

Candelario is looking for partnerships in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Central Standard Brewing expanding its distribution in Wichita
Central Standard Brewing’s popular craft beers will soon be available in more Wichita watering holes, The Wichita Eagle reported on January 30.

Starting in a couple of weeks, the Wichita brewery will introduce its beer on tap in three of Wichita’s favorite beer-friendly bars. The Anchor will be first on Feb. 15, followed by Public at the Brickyard on Feb. 16 and Dempsey’s Burger Pub on Feb. 17.

The brewery’s owners and crew will be at each bar for the tapping events, and they’ll be passing out Central Standard swag.

Home brewers Andy Boyd and Ian Crane opened Central Standard in the summer at 156 S. Greenwood, later partnering with local brew master Nathan Jackel. They’ve quickly earned a reputation for their beers, and their cavernous, 4,000-foot-space, formerly an industrial building, has become one of Wichita’s most trendy hangouts. Owners built an attractive bar and filled the rest of the space with mismatched, retro tables, chairs, couches and easy chairs. On nice days, the brewery can open a giant garage door that leads out onto a big patio, and a local food truck is almost always parked outside during peak dining hours.

House of Schwan’s import and craft brand manager Steven Haines approached Central ...More info on site

Brewery news China: Premiumisation set to transform China’s high-volume but low-profit beer market - analysts
China’s high-volume, low-profit beer market is set to be transformed, with increased “premiumisation” providing opportunities for imported and licensed foreign beer brands, says Rabobank.

In a new report on the Chinese beer market, the Dutch bank’s analysts claim that the world’s biggest beer market suffers from relatively low profitability, though this will change through increasing consolidation and an influx of premium products will provide a platform for profit growth.

To grasp opportunities, the bank suggests that local brewers could consolidate the mainstream beer segment or expand their super-premium portfolios by importing beers or licensing overseas brands.

Meanwhile, exporters from countries with strong beer cultures would be most likely to succeed in China by forging partnerships with local brewers, says Rabobank, adding that global brewers with international brands could either enter the Chinese market quickly through a partnership with a Chinese brewer with distribution power, or through a greenfield operation.

According to the report, China has been the main driver of growth in global beer consumption, accounting for more than half of total volume increases. However, the profitability of beer in China is relatively low due to two important reasons.

“First, the Chinese market is very fragmented, resulting in fierce price competition among brewers and ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria suffers decline in half-year profit amid economic slowdown
Guinness Nigeria Plc, the country’s second-biggest brewer, said half-year profit fell as an economic slowdown hurt beer consumption, Bloomberg reported on February 1.

Net income declined 66 percent to 1.2 billion naira ($6 million) in the six months through December, the Lagos-based unit of London-based Diageo Plc said in a statement published on the Nigerian Stock Exchange website on February 1. Revenue dropped 10 percent to 49.8 billion naira.

Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy, is facing a squeeze in consumption as the nation of more than 170 million people suffers from a slump in crude oil prices that has reduced the country’s main source of revenue. The nation’s economy probably grew 3 percent last year, the slowest pace since 1999, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Guinness Nigeria shares retreated 3.7 percent to 111.20 naira by the close of trading in Lagos, its biggest decline since Jan. 19. The shares are down 7.6 percent this year, compared with a 26 percent decline by larger competitor Nigerian Breweries Plc, part owned by Heineken NV.

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller could face significant delay due to long approval process in South Africa
The megamerger between the world’s largest brewers, AB InBev and SABMiller Plc, could face a significant delay due to a long approval process in South Africa, The Times reported on January 28

The £71-billion deal has prompted scrutiny from regulators around the globe, but the focus has been on markets such as the US and China, where AB InBev and SAB both have significant interests and a merger could impact competition. This is not the case in South Africa, SAB’s home market, as AB InBev has virtually no presence in that market.

Nevertheless, securing approval for the deal from South African regulators is not going to be easy, according to Bernstein’s Trevor Stirling. The analyst told The Times that the country’s regulatory bodies might delay approval pending agreement on issues including employment, social and economic welfare and black empowerment. South Africa “may be the slowest process, likely taking a minimum of 12 months and potentially up to 18 months or longer before final clearance,” he said.

The approval process faces complications stemming from South Africa’s three-tier regulatory authority — the competition commission, the competition tribunal and the competition appeal court – which could force AB InBev to make certain concessions regarding the deal. ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Competition Commission of India approves AB InBev and SABMiller merger
The world’s No. 1 brewer AB InBev has received fair trade regulator CCI's approval to acquire its close rival SABMiller for about 71 billion pounds, The Economic Times reported on February 2.

Last year, Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) said that it had completed an agreement to acquire SABMiller Plc, making it one of the largest deal in the breweries sector.

In a tweet on February 2, Competition Commission of India (CCI) said it has approved the "acquisition of SABMiller Plc by Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV".

SABMiller, founded in 1895, has more than 200 beer brands in its portfolio and 70,000 employees in over 80 countries.

In India, it is primarily engaged in the production, marketing and distribution of beer. Some popular brands in its kitty are Knockout, KO, Haywards, Royal Challenge and Foster's.

For this case, CCI considered "market for the production and distribution of beer in India" as the relevant market.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Drug coordinator criticizes Finance Minister’s proposal to lower VAT on draught beer
The Czech Republic should fight the excessive drinking of alcohol beverages and not decrease taxes on them and make them more accessible, national drug coordinator Jindrich Voboril told CTK on January 29, criticising Finance Minister Andrej Babis's proposal for lower VAT on draught beer.

The proposal runs counter to the approved government plan of fighting alcohol impact, he said.

Czechs lead international standings in alcohol consumption. Moreover, its consumption among children and youth is one of the highest in the EU.

"The World Health Organisation (WHO) has repeatedly warned of the extreme situation concerning alcohol consumption in the Czech Republic. It says pricing is one of the most efficient tools in the fight (against drinking) and making access to alcohol more difficult. Not lowering, but raising the price matters," Voboril said.

He called Babis's (ANO) proposal populist.

Voboril said if the proposal won support, he would have to be considering his resignation.

Last year the centre-left government of the Social Democrats (CSSD), ANO and Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) approved a plan to limit the damage caused by alcohol with the aim to cut the per capita consumption of pure ethanol by 5 percent in five years and by 30 percent in ten years, Voboril pointed out.

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries registers 10% decline in mainstream beer segment in the six months to December 31
East African Breweries Limited continues to suffer stiff competition in the mainstream beer market, registering a sales decline of 10 per cent in this niche which includes flagship beer brand Tusker, The Star reported on January 30.

The regional brewer has for the second year experienced a softening market for Tusker, Bell and Serengeti beers sold in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania respectively in the half year ended December 31, 2015. During the previous half year period, the company said Tusker sales dropped by four per cent.

The company recorded a single digit growth in sales of eight per cent to stand at Sh37.5 billion during the period.

"Tusker should land at your table at around Sh150 so I think what you can do to help us is to ensure you are buying at Sh150 from your retail outlets. I think we need to do just to our (retailers) math in terms of throughput volumes versus the price that I charge," said Kenya Breweries managing director Jane Karuku. KBL is a subsidiary of EABL.

The mainstream beer segment, EABL said, has also been hit by poor business in South Sudan because of political instability which has affected market operations.

"A lot of our mainstream beer was ...More info on site

Brewery news Myanmar: Tiger and ABC Stout returning to Heineken and Asia Pacific Breweries
Two well-known beers, Tiger and ABC Stout, are returning to their mother company after two decades with the military-backed Myanmar Brewery, Heineken announced on February 3.

Tiger and ABC Stout, which Myanmar Brewery has produced and distributed for the Burmese market since 1995, are finally going back to Heineken and its local partner, Asia Pacific Breweries-Alliance Brewery Company Limited (APB-ABC). As of late last year, Myanmar Brewery’s license to produce the two beers expired, said Lester Tan, managing director of the Heineken joint venture APB-ABC.

“Actually, we’re the original owner of both Tiger and ABC Stout. That’s why now we’ll take them all back and sell to this expanding market,” Tan said on February 3 at a press conference.

Tiger and ABC Stout will now be brewed in Heineken’s own US$60 million brewing facility in Rangoon’s Hmawbi Township, which opened in July last year. The brewery has the technical capacity to produce 33 million litres of beer per year, but this year the company plans to expand production to about 45 million litres, according to Tan.

Of the current Tiger and ABC Stout brand designs, Tan said the company will make changes to reflect an updated product look, but assured that the taste of ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries expects higher excise duty to hit demand in Kenya
Kenya's East African Breweries Ltd (EABL) expects a hike in beer excise duty to hit demand in its home market in the coming months and will raise output of a lower-taxed cheap brand in an attempt to offset the impact, its CEO was quoted as saying by GhanaWeb on January 29.

Last month, Kenya lifted the excise tax by 43 percent to 100 shillings ($0.9785) per litre of beer, driving up retail prices by at least 20 shillings per bottle.

"Kenyan consumers are incredibly price sensitive so moving up by 20 shillings is a big deal," said Charles Ireland, group CEO of EABL, which is controlled by Britain's Diageo.

The hike in excise duty, designed to shore up government revenues, was the first one in four years.

"I would prefer that we saw a more regular increase which was smaller rather than an irregular increase, which is bigger, because I think the impact for consumers and the trade would be more manageable," Ireland said.

EABL plans to boost the output of its cheaper Senator Keg beer, which is taxed at a rate of 10 shillings per litre, to offset the impact of the taxes on mainstream and premium beers.

Sales of Senator Keg, which is dispensed ...More info on site
