Brewery news USA, CA: Three Mile Brewing Company to open in Davis next month
Davis beer enthusiasts will have a new reason to celebrate when Three Mile Brewing Company opens in Downtown Davis next month. With Sudwerk Brewery currently being the only brewery in Davis, Three Mile Brewing Company will be the second, and the first to open in Downtown Davis, The Aggie reported on January 26.

The seven founding members of Three Mile have been friends and brewing beer together for 15 years. The business name was inspired by the ban on alcohol within a three-mile radius of the UC Davis campus, which was in effect from 1911 to 1979.

The Three Mile team started a Kickstarter campaign in the beginning of November 2015 to raise funds to open the business. By the end of the month, the team had already surpassed their fundraising goal, raising over $16,000.

“Three Mile Brewing Company is headquartered in Davis, CA. Land of bikes, cool hippies, UC Davis and a ton of beer lovers that are clamoring for another local, dynamic, craft brewing company that delivers top notch beer,” says the team’s Kickstarter page.

Founder Joe Runner cited the company’s unique production system as a distinguishing factor of Three Mile Brewing Company.

Brewery news USA, VA: Jack’s Run Brewing Co owners close to purchasing facility in Purcellville
After more than 10 years brewing beer at home and winning multiple competitions, Al Bosco and Eric Mathewson have always had a dream to open their own brewery, Loudoun Times-Mirror reported on January 28.

When they recently found the perfect space at 108 N. 21st St. in Purcellville, they were ready to turn their dream into a reality.

Bosco and Mathewson have hired Dave Trombley to serve as general manager of the operation. They are buying the building and will close on it Feb. 8.

“We are working with an architect and designers to build out the space,” Trombley said. “We hope to open in May.”

The building, which was formerly Shamrock Music Shoppe, is 3,800 square feet, and the brewery will utilize two floors. The first floor will showcase their brewing equipment and will have a bar area with seating. The second floor will feature a space that can be sectioned off for group events, and will also have a large outdoor patio in the back.

They plan to use local catering options and will bring in food from outside vendors, including Monk’s BBQ and Jose’s White Palace across the street, Trombley said.

The name for the brewery, “Jack’s Run” comes from a creek located ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ID: Payette Brewing adding Seattle to its distribution footprint
Payette Brewing is adding Seattle to its distribution footprint beginning mid-February with Rustler IPA, North Fork Lager, and Rodeo Rye Pale (Spring Seasonal), Brewbound reported on January 28.

Payette was the first Idaho brewery to can beer and it excited to bring their products in draft and canned form to more consumers in the Northwest with The Odom Corporation.

Founder Mike Francis’s brewery dreams first started in Seattle. The UW alum and former Boeing engineer has grown his post-it note brewery into Idaho’s largest brewery after moving back to Idaho and launching distribution into Seattle is a huge milestone for Payette.

“I brewed my first batch of homebrew in my Ravenna apartment almost 10 years ago. My time living in Seattle and experiencing the amazing craft beer scene inspired me to attend brewing school and want to open a brewery. Being able to share Payette beer throughout Seattle is something I’ve been looking forward to since the day I moved back to Boise,” says Francis.

A couple months shy of their fifth anniversary, Payette Brewing is available in five northwest states and looking to expand to additional markets upon completion of its second production facility in Boise, ID. Payette’s River Street brewery is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Hoosier Brewing Co. plans to move to bigger location
A Shelby County brewing company and restaurant plans to move its business to Johnson County after receiving financial assistance from the Franklin Development Commission, Indianapolis Business Journal reported on January 27.

Hoosier Brewing Co., founded in Fairland in July 2014, said it plans a late-spring move to the east side of Franklin, where it intends to expand operations from five to 50 employees over the next five years.

The Franklin Redevelopment Commission said the company has been awarded grant money that will help it open the 5,000-square-foot restaurant and additional brewery space in a remodeled shopping center off King Street near Interstate 65. The vacant space previously contained a tanning parlor and a bar.

The location is in the middle of an area where Franklin has committed to spending about $22 million in infrastructure and road improvements. Mayor Joe McGuinness envisions the area becoming a gateway to the community.

The commission said Hoosier Brewing planned to have at least 15 restaurant and brewery employees making an average yearly income of $49,000 in its first year of operations in the new facility.

The Daily Journal of Franklin said the company would receive $138,000 in conditional financial incentives to cover renovation costs, with the possibility of receiving ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Fool’s Cap Brewing hoping to open its doors in Madison by this fall
Beer, mead and whiskey: soon, the area along East Washington Avenue on Madison’s near east side will provide locally-made versions of all three, Madison.com reported on January 28.

Fool’s Cap Brewing Company, a new Madison craft brewery, is hoping to open its doors at 849 E. Washington Ave. by this fall.

Fool’s Cap will be located in the same building as Bos Meadery, which opened in February of last year, and within blocks of Old Sugar Distillery, 931 E. Main St., which produces whiskey, brandy, rum, ouzo and a honey liqueur.

The neighborhood, which is still comprised primarily of industrial buildings, warehouses and lots, is becoming more attractive to business owners as a number of new apartment buildings attract young professionals.

“We initially identified that corridor as being an ideal space for what we wanted to do,” said Lance McNaughton, president of Fool’s Cap Brewing Company. “If you look at the demographics buying craft beer, the whole region is being designed for the very people we want to sell to.”

Old Sugar Distillery was the first craft beverage producer to move into the area, opening in 2010.

“It was kind of an ideal mixture of different things,” said Nathan Greenawalt, founder of the distillery, of his ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI & IL & PA: Short’s Brewing Co. decides to expand distribution to Illinois and Pennsylvania
A Northern Michigan craft brewer has decided to expand the distribution footprint of its products to out-of-state markets for the first time, MiBiz reported on January 28.

While it had once proclaimed it claimed it would remain “Michigan only, Michigan forever,” Short’s Brewing Co. of Bellaire and Elk Rapids has decided to start selling its Short’s brand of beers and Starcut Ciders in Illinois and Pennsylvania, a market where the company had a relationship with a distributor.

The reason: The company has an excess capacity of 10,000 to 12,000 barrels per year at its brewery and saw its growth within Michigan start to become capped, according to CFO Brian Beckwith.

“We’re not growing just for the sake of growing, we’re growing to use up capacity we have,” Beckwith said, noting Short’s has the capacity to brew 52,000 to 53,000 barrels of beer annually.

Calling the move purely a business decision, one that came after considerable discussion within the company, Beckwith said Short’s remains in the “exploration phase” to get licensed in other states and then approach distributors about possible further geographic expansion.

“We thought Michigan would absorb all beer we could make,” he said. “(Expanding distribution) was a very difficult decision that we debated over ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Plans for microbrewery receive preliminary approval from the Buchanan Township Planning Commission
Plans for a new microbrewery that would be part of a larger complex in Buchanan Township received preliminary approval on January 27 from the Buchanan Township Planning Commission, South Bend Tribune reported.

Flatwater Farms hopes to build the microbrewery off of Walton Road in the northeast part of the township. The planning commission meeting was for the company's request for a special land use permit to build the microbrewery.

The matter will now go to the Buchanan Township Board, which will have the final say on granting the permit. No date has been set for that vote.

This week's meeting continued the process started last fall when Flatwater Farms got the land rezoned from residential to agricultural after promising that it would not have any animal feed lot on the land.

Flatwater Farms owns 100 acres there, 30 acres in Buchanan Township and 70 acres in Niles Township. The business already grows organic hops in Buchanan Township and other crops such as corn, sorghum, herbs, flowers, vegetables and fruits.

Flatwater Farms representative Brian Dougherty said the goal is not only to be able to have an organic microbrewery using the hops grown on site, but also to make this area a destination. "We want to ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Private equity firm KKR reportedly back in tender for Peroni, Grolsch beer brandsb
The line-up of bidders for SABMiller‘s Peroni and Grolsch beers has changed, with U.S. private equity firm KKR replacing Bain Capital, which was unwilling to engage in a bidding war with industry players, Thomson Reuters reported on January 27 citing three sources familiar with the matter.

KKR was not initially shortlisted as one of the final bidders for the brands being unloaded by Anheuser-Busch InBev to smooth its $100 billion-plus takeover of SAB. However, it was later readmitted to the auction after sweetening its bid, said one of the sources.

Other private equity funds including BC Partners backed away earlier in the process, which is expected to wrap up in March.

“Price expectations were pure madness,” said one of the sources, who declined to be identified as the matter is confidential.

AB InBev, the maker of Budweiser, values the brands at no less than 2.5 billion euros ($2.73 billion), said the source, noting that strategic players were well placed to outbid private equity firms, given possible synergies.

Another bidder for the package, which also includes London craft beer Meantime, is Zurich-based investment firm Jacobs Holding, the sources said.

Jacobs, which owns 50 percent of Swiss chocolate company Barry Callebaut, had no comment.

Reuters reported on Jan. 21 ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Boiler explosion kills two workers, injures three others at Heineken brewery in Sao Paulo state
A boiler explosion at a Heineken beer factory in Brazil on January 26 killed two workers and injured three others, one of them seriously, the company confirmed.

The workers were employed by a subcontractor hired by the factory in Jacarei, in the interior of Sao Paulo state, and at the time of the accident they were performing tests on one of the boilers, Fox News Latino reported.

According to the metalworkers' union of Sao Jose dos Campos, the blast occurred at 9 a.m. and destroyed part of the facility.

The union said that the cause of the accident is still not known and, in a communique, demanded a "rigorous investigation" into the incident.

Heineken, meanwhile, expressed its regret over the accident and said that it is in contact with the subcontractors to offer support to the people affected by the explosion.

In a press release, the company said that the factory has temporarily suspended its production operations.

Brewery news UK: AB InBev expands non-alcoholic beer offering with Beck’s Blue Lemon
AB InBev has expanded its non-alcoholic beer range in the UK with new flavour Beck’s Blue Lemon, The Grocer reported on January 27.

With sales up 20% last year to £14.6 mln, Beck’s Blue is the UK’s bestselling non-alcoholic beer [Nielsen 52 w/e 10 October 2015].

Heineken introduced a 0.0% abv version of its lemon flavour Foster’s Radler in 2014, while last February saw Carlsberg’s San Miguel enter the alcohol-free market, with both standard and Limon versions. Carlsberg followed this with an alcohol-free version of its flagship brand in June.

Lemon flavours have also been popular in the lower abv beer segment, with popular products including Carling Zest, Foster’s Radler, and Carlsberg Citrus, all 2% - 2.8% abv.

Brewery news Mozambique & UK: Mozambican beer to become available at Nando’s restaurants across the UK in April
Mozambican brewery Cervejas de Moçambique (CDM) will start supplying its popular 2M beer to Mozambique-themed chicken restaurant Nando’s across the UK from April, Zitamar News reported on January 28.

The company, a subsidiary of brewing giant SABMiller, “plans to start supplying Nando’s UK with its 2M lager from April,” said a CDM spokesperson. Nando’s is pricing the beer at £3.70 per 330ml bottle.

Nando’s has 1,049 restaurants worldwide with the largest number (339) in the UK, according to a website run by the company’s fans. Nando’s UK currently stocks Portuguese beers Sagres and Superbock, along with Brazil’s Brahma and Savanna Cider from South Africa.

Nando’s has started stocking 2M in selected restaurants over recent weeks as a pilot scheme, but CDM will start shipping the lager to the UK in significant quantities from April.

The deal will be a welcome boost for CDM, which saw profits fall 3% last year to MT1.4 billion. The company reported a 2% fall in beer sales in its 2014 results though sales of lager were up 12% year on year, with almost 1 hectolitre sold over the 12-month period.

The deal is also a timely boost for Mozambique’s economy, with the central bank and finance ministry having recently emphasised ...More info on site
