Belgium: Legendary monastery brewer Westvleteren to start labelling their bottles for the first time in 75 years

Monastery brewer Westvleteren, whose legendary beers are produced by monks in the Sint-Sixtus abbey in West Flanders, are to label their bottles for the first time in 75 years, The Brussels Times reported on August 13.
The brewery produces three of Belgium’s celebrated Trappist beers, named after the order or monks who run the abbey. Trappist beers – the appellation is strictly limited to those beers that meet the stringent conditions laid down by the International Trappist Association (ITA). As a result only 13 monasteries now have the right to use the appellation – Achel was dropped when its population of living monks dropped to zero.
As well as the Belgian monasteries, there are Trappist breweries in the Netherlands (Koningshoeven, La Trappe and Zundert, Maria Toevlucht); the US (St Joseph’s , now closed), Austria (Stift Engelszell), Italy (Tre Fontane), England (St Bernard Abbey), France (Mont des Cats) and Spain (Cerveza Cardeña).

UK: Spring malting barley crop showing good grain quality
|
Spring malting barley harvested crops are showing good grain quality with low nitrogen levels and better-than-expected yields, despite the very dry spring and summer and a very early harvest, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on August 12.
Most crops are coming in with grain nitrogen levels below 1.85% in line with maltsters’ needs, and despite often very thin crops, grain weights have been heavy in terms of specific weight, helping to boost overall yields.
Bob King, commercial director of the Crisp Malting Group, says the malting industry needs a big crop as there is little by way of carryover stocks from the previous season, and a good quality spring crop has followed a quality winter malting crop.
“The spring crop is surprisingly good, much better than expected, and everything we have seen is useable, says Mr King, whose company has maltings in East Anglia and Scotland.
With many of southern and eastern English crops now cut and harvest under way as far north as Morayshire in northern Scotland, the nationwide picture is of surprisingly good yields, low nitrogens and high specific weights.

The Netherlands: Production of hops in greenhouses explored in the Netherlands
|
Holland Hops and Inholland University of Applied Sciences are exploring production of hops in greenhouses for use in local beers, RMI Analytics said in their early August report.
The group created the Hollandse Hop RAAK SME research project with Wageningen University and Research, the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Hogeschool Leiden and several other companies. So far, results show hops can be effectively grown in greenhouses, however, the cultivation efficiency still has to be tweaked, especially due to high current energy costs.
The team is looking at sustainable heating methods which could solve this challenge in the future.
