Hops news USA: Hops aroma and consequently beer impacted by growing environment
Hops of the same variety grown in Oregon and Washington and beers brewed with those hops have different chemical properties and aroma profiles, a new Oregon State University study found.

Demand for hops has surged in recent years as the craft beer industry has grown, fueled in part by hop-forward beers, such as India pale ales. Consequently, brewers, hop breeders and hop growers are focused on the aromatic potential of hops and their contribution to beer flavor.

Meanwhile, at a time of increasing appreciation for regionally or locally produced beer, the concept of “hop regional identity” provides hop growers and brewers an opportunity to add value to their products by understanding hop traits that are influenced by a growing region, a subregion or even a single field. The idea of regional identity, also known as terroir, has been used to market other agricultural products, such as coffee, cannabis and wine.

“Like winemakers, brewers want to know: Will hops grown in different regions be different? And, if so, why?” said Tom Shellhammer, an Oregon State professor who studies the chemistry of hops. “This study shows compelling evidence that there are differences you can attribute to the region.”

Washington is by far the largest hop-producing state, ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: President calls on brewers to reduce production in drought-hit areas
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on August 8 called on brewers to reduce beer production in drought-hit areas in the north of the country, a major exporter of the beverage, Barron's reported.

"That's not to say that we'll no longer produce beer. I mean, beer won't be produced in the north," Lopez Obrador told reporters, although he stopped short of ordering a halt.

Lopez Obrador said his government would support companies if they make beer in southeastern states known for their mighty rivers, lush jungle and high levels of poverty.

"But permission can no longer be given where there's no water," he added.

Mexico was the world's largest beer exporter in 2021 with sales of around $5 billion, followed by the Netherlands with nearly $2.2 billion, according to United Nations data.

Dutch giant Heineken and Belgian-Brazilian behemoth Anheuser-Busch InBev are among brewers with factories in northern Mexico.

Households in the northern industrial powerhouse of Monterrey have faced weeks of water rationing due to a lack of rain and, according to environmentalists, poor resource management.

The government has declared a drought emergency to enable authorities to take special measures to guarantee water supplies.

Whisky news USA: TTB proposes standards for American single malt
The US government’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) has published its proposed standards for American single malt, The Spirits Business reported on August 1.

The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking was published in the federal register on 29 July as an amendment to the whiskey standard.

To be labelled as a US-made single malt, TTB proposes that the liquid must be distilled entirely at one American distillery, and must be mashed, distilled, and aged in the States.

It must also be made of 100% malted barley, stored in an oak barrel of 700 litres or under, and be bottled at 40% ABV or higher.

Trade body the Distilled Spirits Council of the US (Discus) welcomed the move, which followed a letter it sent to the TTB urging them to move forward with the rule in April.

Discus and the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission (ASMWC) submitted official comments to the TTB in June 2019 in support of setting a standard for US-made single malt whiskey as part of TTB’s 2018 plan to modernise the labelling and advertising regulations for alcohol.

“We want to thank TTB for listening to the industry’s requests and we look forward to working with the Bureau to develop an official ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Constellation Brands secures water rights of new Mexico brewery
Constellation Brands, whose US$1.4bn brewery project in Mexico’s Baja California state was canceled midway through construction in 2020, has secured water rights for a new US$1.3bn plant that it will build in Veracruz state, bnamericas.com reported on August 6.

The US beer giant has obtained all the necessary permits to extract water from a state aquifer once the plant begins operations, Bernardo Martínez, a company executive in charge of the project’s investments, told Mexican daily Milenio.

Besides the plant, the project also includes building highway and railway accesses to Veracruz’s port, Martínez said.

The Baja California project was canceled in March 2020 after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) decided to hold a referendum with residents of state capital Mexicali to decide its fate due to water-related concerns. The majority of people who participated in the consultation voted against the project.

The public consultation was controversial since less than 5% of eligible voters turned out. It also marked the first time that a Mexican government had held a referendum on a major foreign investment project.

In December last year, Mexican officials disclosed that Constellation had agreed to relocate the project to an unmade location in the country’s poorer southeast region. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Craft breweries confronting carbon dioxide shortage
Craft breweries across America have been on the front lines of businesses facing higher material costs because of inflation, NBC News reported on August 4.

Now, many are confronting a shortage of a key ingredient: carbon dioxide, the gas that gives beer its crisp, effervescent taste.

And one brewer has already said it plans to shut down a key manufacturing plant and lay off workers as a result.

Night Shift Brewing, in Everett, Massachusetts, just outside Boston, cited the CO2 shortage as the reason it is suspending operations at its longtime facility and outsourcing to nearby locations instead.

"Come October 1, we won’t likely have jobs for many of this team," the company said in a statement on Instagram.

It's a slow-moving crisis that became worse this summer as reports emerged that the carbon dioxide sourced at Jackson Dome in Mississippi, one of the nation's largest gas production hubs, had been contaminated.

Even before that, breweries were facing higher costs for raw materials like aluminum and barley as a result of inflation, said Chuck Skypeck, a technical brewing projects director at the Brewers Association, the 6,000-member trade group that represents America's independent brewers.

And carbon dioxide supplies were already tight because pandemic shutdowns forced many key ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AR: Arkansas brewers see production rise in 2021 to an all-time high
Arkansas' brewers saw production rise in 2021 to an all-time high despite supply chain snags and inflation increasing their operating costs, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported on August 7.

In 2021, the state's brewers produced 50,509 barrels of suds, seltzer and other adult beverages, according to information provided by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Division of the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration; that's up by 33% when compared with 38,066 barrels in 2020 and beats 2019's record year of 40,819 barrels by 25%.

When converted to gallons, Arkansas produced 1.56 million gallons in 2021, up from 1.18 million gallons in 2020 and also an increase compared with 2019's previous record of 1.26 million gallons. A barrel of beer contains 31 gallons.

In March of 2020, Arkansas saw its first covid-19 cases followed by mandated closures of restaurants -- a key revenue source for many craft breweries. Closures also hit breweries' taprooms -- also a source of income for many operations. Since then, Arkansas brewers have seen their business return to normal, but they still face supply chain snarls that lingered after the worst of the pandemic and higher costs for key inputs, from aluminum cans to grain, due to shortages and international ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: Bias Brewing Company to move into space left open with Kalispell Brewing’s closing
Changes are fermenting in Kalispell’s craft beer scene, the Daily Inter Lake reported on August 7.

Kalispell Brewing Co., which opened in the summer of 2014 on Main Street after remodeling the former Hendricksen Motors building, closed its doors on Aug. 3. Simultaneously, Bias Brewing Company, which has operated on nearby First Avenue East announced it would be moving into the space left open with Kalispell’s closing.

“When KBC was listed for sale we were shocked and saddened to hear they would be closing their doors,” said Gabe Mariman, co-owner of Bias Brewing Company, in a release. “Since opening four years ago, we have collaborated and shared a common love for this community and craft brewing, not to mention many beers with the owners and employees of Kalispell Brewing Co.”

Mariman says Bias Brewing doubled its brewing production in 2020 and has subsequently outgrown its factory space. Since then, he and co-owner Adam Robertson have been looking for a larger or second location in the Flathead Valley to expand operations.

The purchase of the building was expected to close on Friday. Bias will continue to operate in its current location until re-opening on Main Street in early fall.

Kalispell Brewing Co. was founded in 2012 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Finnegans announces acquisition of Hairless Dog Brewing Company
Downtown Minneapolis brewing company Finnegans is adding nonalcoholic beers to its offerings, kstp.com reported.

The acquisition of Hairless Dog Brewing Company by Finnegans was announced on August 2.

Hairless Dog Brewing only makes nonalcoholic beers. They currently have three signature varieties: Citra Lager, IPA and Black Ale – that will now be made and sold at FINNEGANS as well as liquor and grocery stores nationwide. The drinks will continue to be sold under the Hairless Dog name and brand.

Hairless Dog was founded in Minneapolis in 2016 by two Minnesotans, Paul Pirner and Jeff Hollander. The company says they created the first true 0.0% nonalcoholic beer in the United States, saying most nonalcoholic beers actually have as much as 0.5% alcohol in them. Their brewing process uses no alcohol.

“We are so proud of what we have created with Hairless Dog and there is no one better than Jacquie Berglund and her team at FINNEGANS that we would trust to keep the brand alive,” said Jeff Hollander, Hairless Dog co-founder, in a statement. “And keeping it in Minnesota is important to us.”

Brewery news USA, CO: Trail Life Brewing finally opens its doors in Grand Junction
Grand Junction’s Trail Life Brewing finally opened its doors to the public on August 3, filling the other remaining half of the void that had been left on Main Street by the Twisted Turtle’s closing, The Daily Sentinel reported.

The brewery at 436 Main St. is co-owned by married couple Ryan and Emma Dutch and shares its building with Gear Junction.

The two are thematically similar, with Gear Junction providing equipment for the outdoors and Trail Life Brewing hoping to serve as a gathering place for lovers of the outdoors.

Gear Junction opened in May, and now, after nearly a year of work to bring their side of the building up to code, renovate it and install the framework for a brewery, the Dutches can get down to beer business.

“It feels awesome. I don’t know how else to say it,” Ryan said. “Everything we’ve been working for for the last year... it’s amazing. Everything, down to the beer board, turned out how we wanted. It came out excellent.”

Trail Life’s initial beer board included nearly two dozen options from the region and around the state, such as the Palisade Brewing Laid Back Blonde, the Telluride Face Down Brown, Cedaredge’s Snowcapped Honeycrisp Cider, Durango’s Ska ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: First black-owned brewery in Charlottesville coming soon
The first black-owned brewery in the Charlottesville area is coming soon, WDBJ reported on August 6.

After making his first batch in his mother’s kitchen in 2017, founder and head-brewer of Neon Culture Brewing, Corey Hoffman, is bringing his unique, non-traditional craft beers to the Charlottesville community in a way that is inspired by his culture.

“With a lot of our beers, the way I want to set it up is that the first couple of beers we release will be like a ‘side A,’ and the next couple we do will be like a ‘side B.’ Each one will have a theme and be like a mix-tape in a way, and I think that will keep our stuff really fresh and different,” Hoffman said.

Neon Culture Brewing wants to show that the brewing industry is for everybody.

They are currently hosting fundraiser events and accepting donations from the community to get them closer to opening.

Brewery news USA, OR: Xicha Brewing opening second location in Eugene
Oregon’s only Latino owned brewery (not withstanding ghost brand Brujos Brewing), the Salem-based Xicha Brewing (pronounced “chee-chah”), is opening their second location in Eugene, Oregon, the New School Beer reported on August 3.

Since their Salem opening in 2017 Xicha Brewing founders Ben Mendoza, Matt Dakopolos, and Ricardo Antunez, have embraced the Hispanic heritage with food from New Mexico, Peru, and other latin influences that they pair with drinkable European-style beers like Clasica Amber Lager, La Cobriza maibock and newer cultural hybrids like a Hibiscus IPA, Mango Pale Ale, and a Guava Sour.

Xicha Brewing Salem will bring a different flavor to Eugene’s already thriving craft beer scene following shortly behind newer beer meccas like A Beer Club, and The Kind Hop.

“Eugene is a dope place and based on our experiences it seems to have the capacity to entertain our different ideas of what a taphouse/brewpub/taqueria could be,” says Xicha Brewing’s Melissa Sanchez.

The taproom will be a retail tenant in the newish Amazon Corner Apartments, the ground floor courtyard adjacent space shares the building with Provisions Market South and gives Xicha 1,900 sq. ft. for a taproom and fast/casual restaurant. Xicha started self-distributing their beer to Eugene just before the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Newfangled Brew Works to close its doors permanently on August 14
Harrisburg’s Newfangled Brew Works will be closing its doors permanently, after almost 4 years in business. The brewery’s last day will be Sunday, August 14th, 2022, the Breweries in PA reported.

The brewery originally opened in November of 2018 in a brand new, 12,000 square foot building on Union Station Blvd, and has been known for a variety of beer styles. In 2019, the brewery would host the very first Pennsylvania military veteran beer collaboration.

Co-owner and head brewer Adam Cole cited issues stemming from Covid as the main reason for closing:

“The PA COVID response greatly damaged the business. Between the decreased business and ever-increasing costs to operate, we’re closing.”

The brewery confirmed on social media their plans to close operations by August 14th.

Brewery news Japan: Liquor tax revenue plunges by more than 110 bln yen in fiscal 2020
Weighed down by the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan's liquor tax revenue in fiscal 2020 plunged by more than ¥110 billion from the previous year to ¥1.13 trillion, according to National Tax Agency data published this year.

Both the size of the fall and the rate of decrease were the largest in 31 years since the impact of a drastic revision of the Liquor Tax Law in fiscal 1989.

The spread of the coronavirus is believed to have dealt a direct blow to tax revenue as customer traffic plummeted at restaurants offering alcoholic beverages.

The agency's division believed that alcoholic drinks would not be strongly affected by economic conditions and would remain a stable tax revenue source with little fluctuation. The liquor tax revenue share of total government tax revenue has shrunk, however, standing at 1.7% in fiscal 2020, compared with 5% in fiscal 1980.

"As working from home made strides to a certain extent during the COVID-19 crisis, many people may have come to question whether they need to continue the habit of drinking with colleagues to deepen communication," an official at the agency said. "If the 'new normal' takes root, that will be an additional headwind for tax revenue."

Brewery news UK: On-trade drinks sales fluctuated during July’s hottest fortnight
UK’s on-trade drinks sales fluctuated during July’s hottest fortnight as many consumers stayed at home rather than risk their local beer garden, The Drinks Business reported on August 2.

CGA by NielsenIQ’s most recent Drinks Recovery Tracker has revealed that while sales by value increased in the week from 10 to 16 July, in the week up to 23 July they dropped as the mercury in some parts of the country reached 40°C.

The data, compared to the equivalent week in 2019, shows that from 10 to 16 July on-trade beer value sales increased by 2%, cider by 18% and spirits by 6%, though wine witnessed a drop of 21%.

For the following week though, it was negative across the board: -17% for wine, -1% for spirits, -7% for cider and -5% for beer. Soft drink consumption was also down in both weeks, at -3% and -9% respectively.

From Tuesday 19 July to Friday 22 July, sales dipped by between 10% and 14%. However, as the fierce heat subsided and consumers were once again prepared to leave the house, positive trading resumed on Saturday 23 July. CGA partially attributes this to pubs screening the Ultimate Fighting Championship Fight Night that evening.

Brewery news UK: Heineken to increase prices of its draught beer and cider by 6% from September
Global brewer Heineken will be increasing the prices of its draught beer and cider brands by 6% from next month (Monday 5 September), The Morning Advertiser said on August 3.

In an email seen by The Morning Advertiser signed by on-trade director Stephen Watt, it outlined the rise on wholesale selling prices will be duty exclusive and prices on existing packaged products will be held.

The increase was put down to the company dealing with higher costs on raw materials, energy and in its distribution network.

In April this year, the global brewer previously warned it was considering increasing its prices as a result of inflationary pressures and “macro-economic uncertainty”.

The company announced a price rise earlier this year (February) in its 2021 full year results report.

The warning came as the brewer announced its Q1 2022 trading update, which revealed total beer volume grew in the UK, driven by the on-trade recovery.

Responding to the latest price increase, a Heineken UK spokesperson said: “Like many UK manufacturers we are facing much higher costs, including energy and raw materials and throughout our supply chain.

“We are mitigating the risk of cost volatility where we can and continue to look at ways to drive greater efficiency however at ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Huge potential in new winter barley varieties
Recent additions to the winter barley list provide growers with plenty of choice this autumn. Competition for market share is fierce as many varieties demonstrate improvements in grain yield and quality, the Scottish Farmer reported on August 4.

Growers should take advantage of the new varieties by considering a combination of agronomic features such specific weight, straw stiffness and maturity, as well as variety performance on different soil types.

The best two-row feed varieties are now achieving yields close to the six-row hybrids, and their grain quality tends to be good with some excellent specific weights and low levels of screenings.

Six-row hybrids have very high yield potential but note that taller varieties with moderate or weak straw strength will need stiffening under high lodging situations. Hybrids have very good specific weight though varieties differ in their level of screenings.

Improving disease resistance remains a major challenge for plant breeders. The average yield loss in crops grown without fungicide is 20 per cent, but some varieties lose much less. Therefore, look at the value in untreated yield when refining variety choices.

Varieties in their first or second year show huge promise and there are several strong candidates to follow. Barley choices with most value to ...More info on site

Whisky news South Korea: Diageo’s plan to sell Windsor whiskey brand hits a snag
World’s top Scotch whiskey producer Diageo’s plan to sell Korea-origin whiskey brand Windsor has hit a snag as a key member of the buyout consortium has decided to abandon the ship to the upset of the 200 billion won ($154 million) deal, the Pulse News Korea reported on August 5.

Kosdaq-listed firm WI announced on August 4 that it has decided to cancel the issuance of convertible bonds worth 80 billion won ($61.5 million) aimed to finance its share of Windsor buyout from Diageo Korea after the funding vehicle Orbit-W1 investment association failed to raise enough funding.

WI is the key member of the preferred consortium also composed of Bayside Private Equity and Metis Private Equity (Bayside/ Metis). The consortium agreed on a deal with Diageo Korea to buy Windsor for 200 billion won.

WI originally planned to come up with 80 billion won through CB issue and the Bayside/ Metis 50 billion won through project funding. The remaining amount was to be lent by Hana Bank.

Brewery news South Korea: HiteJinro resumes shipping at its Gangwon brewery
South Korea’s top liquor maker HiteJinro Co. on August 8 has been able to renew shipping at its Gangwon plant responsible for most of its popular beer lineup during summer peak season by dispatching headquarters staff to normalize shipments disrupted for a week from a sit-down strike by lorry union, the Pulse reported.

According to multiple industry sources on August 8, HiteJinro staff from headquarters led a chain of trucks to load beer boxes from its factory in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province under police guard after managing to open the gateway that had been blocked by truck owners belonging to the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions. Brewery news Thailand: Liquor and beer prices to go up after March 1 - source
Major manufacturers and distributors of liquor and beer have notified trade partners that they will raise prices of selected products from next week, said an informed source on August 9, The Nation Thailand reported.

From next month, the price of rice whisky will rise by Bt120 per case of small bottles – from Bt1,242 to Bt1,362 – and by Bt54 per case of large bottles, from Bt1,158 to Bt1,212, said the source. “The price of beer will also go up by Bt2-4 per can, or Bt48 per case of large bottles [from Bt805 to Bt853],” the source added.

However, the Excise Department said on August 9 that no manufacturers have notified the department of prices rises. The law requires that manufacturers give notice if they intend to raise the price by more than five per cent of the level suggested by the department.

The department insisted that the government had no policy to increase tax on alcoholic beverages, so any price hike must be due to other reasons.

Krungthep Turakij newspaper on August 9 surveyed alcohol retailers in Chiang Mai’s Saraphi district and found that though prices were still the same, most shops anticipate rises after March 1.

“Small retailers will be severely affected as ...More info on site
