Singapore: ThaiBev shares slump after another deferral of brewery unit IPO
|
Shares of Thai Beverage Pcl. slumped after the company deferred the initial public offering of its brewery unit in Singapore once again, citing “prolonged challenging market conditions” for its decision, Yahoo reported on August 12.
The maker of Chang beer fell as much as 4.4%, the biggest decline in more than a year. It said on August 11 it will continue to monitor market conditions and explore opportunities to maximize shareholder value, including potentially reviewing the proposed spin-off listing “at an appropriate time”.
The announcement comes just months after the firm said it intended to resume the listing of BeerCo. - a plan it has shelved multiple times - and conduct a public offering of as much as about 20% of the unit. ThaiBev, controlled by Thai tycoon Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, was seeking about $800 million to $1 billion in the unit’s IPO, people familiar with the matter previously said.
“The hesitation on ThaiBev’s part may be linked to liquidity concerns in this region,” said Nirgunan Tiruchelvam, an analyst at Tellimer in Singapore. “It is an indictment on the market conditions” rather than a reflection of the operating performance of the beer business, he added.

Australia: Brewers warn of price hikes due to excise tax pressure
|
Australia’s brewers have warned that packaged beverages will become more expensive and could increase by a larger margin that pints at the pub, ABC.net.au reported on August 10.
Independent and larger-scale brewing companies across Australia are feeling the pressure of a recent increase in excise tax, as well as a spike in aluminium and ingredient prices.
Wilson Brewing Co founder Matt Wilson said brewers had tried to keep prices as low as possible, but it was inevitable they would rise.
"You're not only going to see an increase in pint prices at the pub, you're actually going to see a larger increase of packaged product that you would purchase and take home to drink," he said.
The alcohol excise tax increases every six months, and the most recent hike of 3.84 per cent for full-strength beer was the largest in 20 years.
Mr Wilson said brewing costs had ballooned by about 60 per cent over the past two decades, and that flowed on to consumers.
"You might see a A$5 to A$10 raise in carton prices coming up around Christmas time or even before," he said.
"The unfortunate thing about excise taxes, it never goes backwards."

UK: Australia’s Lion sells ist UK-based craft brewing operations
|
Lion has sold its domestic UK-based operations – including the Magic Rock and Fourpure craft brewers – to Odyssey Inns Ltd, BeverageDaily.com reported on August 11.
Australian brewer Lion had been eying up the size and potential of the UK craft market with the acquisitions of the craft brewers in 2019 and 2018 respectively, as well as seeing the opportunity to expand these brands abroad.
It now says, however, that it wants to focus future investment towards its businesses in Australia, New Zealand and the US: where it has made significant craft beer investments (in the US, it acquired New Belgium Brewing in 2019; Bell’s Brewery in 2021 and opened a Little Creatures venue and microbrewery in San Francisco in 2019).
Lion, a subsidiary of Japan’s Kirin, announced a review of the UK business in January: saying that, 'like any business, we need to make choices as to where we continue to direct our investment.'
“Following a strategic review, Odyssey represented the right team of UK beer and hospitality industry experts to lead the Fourpure and Magic Rock brands into their next chapters,” says a statement from the company announcing the sale this week.

UK: Guinness given permission to build its microbrewery in London’s Covent Garden
|
Guinness has been given permission to build a £73 million microbrewery in London’s Covent Garden despite worries revellers will be able to see into residents' homes. Plans for a six-floor microbrewery, complete with a 200-capacity yard were criticised by nearby residents for the amount of noise and disruption it will cause, MyLondon reported on August 10.
Guinness hopes the new 50,000-square venue at Old Brewers’ Yard will include a two-storey roof terrace, a top-floor restaurant and a Guinness merchandise store. The drinks company also wants to convert a bin store into a bar area. But despite 32 objections from residents and the borough of Camden, the drinks giant was given permission to build the brewery as long as it met certain conditions.
In a three-hour meeting on August 9, Westminster City Council decided to approve the plans as long as Guinness reduces the amount of space in its new courtyard and closes its drinks terrace after 9.30pm. The new site will cover locations linking Mercer Walk, Langley Street, Neal Street and Shelton Street, complete with a covered courtyard.

Sales of beer and quasi-beer in Japan dropped by about 3 pct from a year before in July, marking their first decline in three months, industry data showed.
Sales of canned beer products for household consumption fell by some 8 pct after surging a year before when people were drinking more at home amid the Tokyo Games.

The Dominican Republic: Dominican National Brewery celebrates revival of local glass industry
|
An agreement signed between the Dominican National Brewery and Caribbean Glass Industry has materialized the revival of the local glass industry, resulting in the production of the first containers that meet international quality standards and characterize the Presidente beer product, the Dominican Today reported on August 7.
“The production of green bottles completely Dominican is already a reality. After several months of hard work and detailed production testing process, Cervecería launches to the market a batch of more than 10 million beers in locally produced bottles,” the Dominican National Brewery said in a press release.
This process has involved the integration of collaborators from both companies who have validated, through 17 quality points, each of the technical specifications required by high international production standards for the manufacture of these bottles, he added.
“After challenging months, we are proud to be able to say that we now have on the market beers with bottles produced 100% on Dominican soil and by 100% Dominican hands. This great milestone represents one more step in achieving the goal of gradually increasing the availability of our beloved Presidente beer in every corner of the country,” said Fabián Suárez, president of the brewery.

Australia: June malting barley exports stand at 52,682 tonnes
|
Australia exported 482,840 tonnes of feed barley, 52,682t of malting barley and 266,101t of sorghum in June, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The feed barley figure is down 18 per cent from the May total of 585,968t, while the malting figure is down 27pc from 72,203t shipped in May.
The June sorghum figure is down very slightly from the 267,595t exported in May.
With 266,132t shipped in June, Saudi Arabia once again was the biggest market for feed barley, followed by Japan on 135,959t and Vietnam on 65,790t.
In malting, Japan on 22,637t, South Korea on 20,417t and Singapore on 4264t were the three biggest buyers.
China continues its run as the biggest customer by far for Australian sorghum, and was the destination for 188,993t of the June-shipped grain, followed by Japan on 69,500t and Taiwan on 5586t.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said feed barley exports came in at their lowest level since October.
“Dwindling supplies in South Australia and Victoria are putting the brakes on Australian volumes, along with EU and Black Sea new-crop sales taking some of our market share into the Middle East,” Mr Roache said.

Beam Suntory reports an increase of 13% in net sales in the H1 2022 as opposed to the same time last year. The maker of Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark bourbon, Courvoisier cognac, and Hibiki Japanese whisky posted a 25% increase this year when compared with pre-pandemic period in 2019, The Financial Express reported on August 11.
The fact that the company was able to deliver these strong results in a challenging period underscores the resilience of the markets, quality of the company’s brands, and the significant impact of its premiumisation strategy, Albert Baladi, president and CEO, Beam Suntory, said. “We expect that the external environment will be even more challenging in the second half of the year and into 2023, and we are well positioned to deliver against both our short- and long-term ambitions through the strategies we have in place, and investments we’re making in our future,” he added.
