Cyprus: Cyprus breweries facing challenges with a sharp decline in export

Cypriot breweries are facing challenges with a sharp decline in export volumes rocking the sector alongside domestic market contraction and delivery issues, The Drinks Business (db) reported on July 9.

According to data from the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT), the Cyprus beer sector has shown a substantial decline in exports, equal to 38.3%.

The CYSTAT revealed that beer export volumes in Cyprus plummeted to 151,321 litres, showing a huge contrast of nearly two fifths of what it was compared to the 245,087 litres that the market’s breweries sent overseas last year.

Comparatively, the total volume of beer delivered to the domestic market and for export reached 4,716,070 litres in June 2026 compared with 4,846,927 litres recorded in June 2025, representing a 2.7% contraction.

According to the statistics, beer deliveries to the domestic market only saw a marginal decline of 0.8% in June 2026 compared with June 2025, totalling 4,564,749 litres.

The most famous Cypriot beers are the 4.5% ABV Pilsner-style lager KEO which s brewed in Limassol and the country’s oldest commercial brew Leon, according to Beers of Europe.

In a report from Forbes earlier this year, indications were that beer consumption in Cyprus in 2026 started on a strong note and, according to new data from The Future Media, beer deliveries had reached 1.88 million litres in January, marking a 3.1% year-on-year increase. However, the reports also warned of the fact that local consumption primarily drives the sector (almost 98% of deliveries reportedly stay within the domestic market)in terms of exports the sector was “still modest”.

Giving a balanced view, local reports via Cyprus Mail also flagged that, despite the annual decline being seen across beer in Cyprus, the data released by the CYSTAT has also shown that total beer deliveries have reflected a monthly recovery, increasing by 7.4% or 326,421 litres when compared with May 2026.
