USA, TX: 5×5 Brewing Co. to end operations at the end of February

A popular Mission brewery announced on January 27 it will close and end operations at the end of February, the Brownsville Herald reported.

5×5 Brewing Co. made the announcement on its Facebook page, where various people are mourning the news of the upcoming closure.

“Didn’t see this coming,” read one comment.

The brewery will officially shutter its taproom Feb. 28, but not before one final hurrah on Valentine’s Day when the business will host a Rockability Rumble.

5×5 Brewing Co. continued to say the decision was not taken lightly, adding that every option to keep operations going had been exhausted.

“Over the past several months, we’ve worked through every possible path forward including restructuring, renegotiating obligations, and exploring new partnership options,” the brewery said. “Unfortunately, due to structure changes and financial obligations 5×5 is no longer able to operate as a sustainable business.”

The brewery frequently hosted local events such as the annual BeerStone strongman event as well as concocted Valley-specific beers like “Tlacuaches Trokiando Cuh” and the UTRGV blood orange kölsch style ale “Los Vaqueros.”

“While this chapter is ending, the memories, friendships, and community we built here don’t disappear,” 5×5 Brewing Co. said. “They live on in every story told over a beer, every song played too loud, and every night that turned into something unforgettable.”

The brewery will provide more details on final operating hours, remaining inventory and merchandise availability in the coming days.

George Rice, who formerly co-owned the brewery, said on Facebook that there was a potential sale opportunity for those interested as he noted the current leadership decided to close down.
