Brewery news Suriname: Heineken to invest in Surinaamse Brouwerij NV’s expansion
Heineken Brewery will invest several million euros in the expansion of Surinaamse Brouwerij NV, which will enable the Suriname company, which has been a subsidiary of Heineken since 1968, to produce 50 million litres of beer annually, the Aviation Analysis reported on November 24.

For the past 66 years, beer producers in Suriname have not been allowed to produce more than 20 million litres of beer annually. But due to an amendment to the law approved by the Parliament of Suriname last week, there is an expansion to 2.5 times as much as possible.

Surinamese Brouwerij, which only had space to brew PARBO beer, can now produce Heineken itself in Suriname due to expansion, and this presents opportunities, said manager Reinoud Ottervanger.

He sees opportunities to export Heineken and PARBO beers to, among others, the Netherlands, Curaçao, the neighbouring countries of French Guiana, Guyana and possibly also America.

The higher production limit could generate €7 million in indirect tax revenue for the Government of Suriname. The news site said it is also in line with President Santoji’s government’s policy to boost domestic production and exports.

Brewery news South Korea: Convenience stores seeing huge boost in sales of packaged craft beer
Convenience stores in Korea are seeing a huge boost in sales of packaged craft beer after years of big beer having dominated the fridges, The Drinks Business reported on November 23.

Three years ago, the Korean convenience store beer market was reportedly overrun by imported beers due to price promotions, however, the situation has changed with each store now placing focus on selling craft beer.

The factors behind the change, according to Korea Bizwire, include: a slump in the Japanese beer import market resulting from the boycott against Japanese products, the growth of the home beer market amidst the pandemic and the consumption trend of the MZ generation that values individuality.

Currently, store chain CU is reportedly selling 27 different kinds of craft beers, with the share of craft beers among its total beer sales estimated at 15.2% in the January to October period of this year.

CU is not alone. Among 500-millilitre cans of beer have been alleged to be selling at GS25, while its share of craft beer shot up from 2.1% in 2018 to 12.4% this year.

The findings also show that share of craft beers among locally made beer sales at 7-Eleven also jumped from 2.5% in 2018 to 15.2% this ...More info on site

Brewery news Europe: Molson Coors extends partnership to distribute Diageo’s beer portfolio in most Central and Eastern European markets
Diageo has extended its partnership with Molson Coors Beverage Company, which will see the latter distribute Diageo’s beer portfolio in most Central and Eastern European markets as of January, the Beverage Daily reported on November 24.

For Diageo, the partnership will help its key beer brands such as Guinness, Kilkenny and Hop House 13 grow further thanks to the strong on-trade and off-trade distribution channels Molson Coors has via its companies in the local beer markets.

The partnership started in April 2021 in the Czech Republic with Pivovary Staropramen - a Molson Coors company.

From January 1, it will add the following Molson Coors companies in Central and Eastern Europe: Kamenitza (Bulgaria), Zagrebačka pivovara (Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina), Borsodi brewery (Hungary), Pivovary Staropramen (Slovakia), Apatinska Pivara (Serbia), and Trebjesa brewery (Montenegro).

Michael Holm, Managing Director, Diageo Eastern Europe, said: “We will continue to evolve our route to market strategy and we believe that this cooperation will help us to significantly increase the availability of our beer brands.

"We look forward to the opportunities and growth we can achieve together with Molson Coors in most of the countries in Central and Eastern Europe with our brands and future innovations.”

Brewery news UK: Alcohol-free beer predicted to be widely available on tap as from January
Alcohol-free beer is predicted to be widely available on tap this Dry January in the UK, as Heineken claims to have solved the yeast conundrum making draught no and low brews impossible until now, The Drinks Business reported on November 22.

The brewer believes that by 2025 the number of draught Heineken 0.0 taps in UK pubs will match that of its alcoholic alternative.

Heineken has come up with a way of stopping yeast from growing in the alcohol-free beer taps, resulting in a widespread launch of alcohol-free draught beer taps across the UK in January.

Alcohol-free beer has until now been predominantly sold in bottles and cans. The problem with draught NoLo pints being that natural yeast from the beer lines can make its way into the beer, turning the tipple alcoholic in the keg.

Several years ago Heineken trialled a countertop keg system in a number of UK pubs and bars, which received positive feedback. But the brewer had failed to come up with a solution to a widespread launch of alcohol-free beer using a pub’s own keg lines until now.

Five years of research has led to the company’s discovery that keeping the cellar equipment cooled to between 0°C and 2°C ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Liquor players welcome excise duty reduction in Maharashtra
Global alcoholic beverages behemoth Diageo and associations like the International Spirits and Wines Association of India (ISWAI) welcomed Maharashtra government's move to reduce the excise duty on imported liquor by 50 percent, the Business Today reported on November 23.

Diageo, which owns brands like Johnnie Walker, Black & White, Smirnoff and Vat 69, has welcomed the move as it will make liquor brands ‘accessible for consumers in Maharashtra’ in line with Delhi, Haryana, West Bengal and Goa. It also called this a ‘win-win policy for consumers, industry and the Government’.

“We compliment the continued efforts of the Maharashtra Government in bringing progressive policies to the state. Diageo India welcomes the reduction in Excise Duty on imported spirits, which is in line with what we are seeing in other states,” says Abanti Sankaranarayanan, Chief Strategy & Corporate Affairs Officer, Diageo India.

“The reduction in duties will make these brands more accessible for consumers in Maharashtra, in line with states like Delhi, Haryana, West Bengal and Goa and is in sync with the strong consumer trend of premiumization in beverage alcohol. This new policy will correct revenue leakage for the State by curbing counterfeit and stock movement from other parts of the country, making it ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: 2021-22 barley supply at 8 mln tonnes sharply down from 2020-21
For 2021-22, Canadian barley supply is projected at 8.00 million tonnes, down sharply from 2020-21 and reaching a record low, primarily due to production issues in Canada’s Prairie provinces, as well as record low carry-in stocks, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its November report.

To reflect the tight supply, demand for both domestic feed consumption and exports will be sharply lower than last year. Canadian Grain Commission (CGC)’s weekly statistics show that, as of November 1st, 2021, Canadian barley grain exports are close to 1.00 mln tonnes, 23% higher than the same period last year when barley grain exports had been active and exports for the entire crop year reached 3.80 mln tonnes. The analysts expect the exporting pace will slow down for the rest of the year.

Carry-out stocks are expected to be at a record low level. The 2021-22 barley carry-out stocks are projected at 300 thousand tonnes, which is much lower than the average monthly demand in the past five years. This level of ending stocks would meet less than one month of domestic use.

The average price of feed barley for 2021-22 is projected at a new record of $400/t, up sharply from the previous record set in ...More info on site
