Brewery news USA, PA: High Road Brewing Company to open in Camp Hill by summer 2022
Matt Flinchbaugh isn’t slowing down, the Penn Live reported on November 18.

The owner of Flinchy’s in Lower Allen Township and Home Slice at Walden in Silver Spring Township is pursuing his next project, High Road Brewing Company in Camp Hill.

By summer 2022, the brewhouse will open at 1801 Market St. in a building owned by Smith Land & Improvement Corporation in Camp Hill. High Road joins other retailers at the complex including One Good Woman, Little Black Dress and Plum Bottom shoes.

“I just felt it was a fit for Camp Hill. It has been proven now that breweries and small local places are not a fad. It’s not going anywhere,” Flinchbaugh said.

High Road will be the first in Camp Hill to manufacture beer since residents voted in 2017 to reverse the town’s dry status. Although, Watershed Pub opened in 2020 in the borough and serves beer from owner Josh Kesler’s Millworks restaurant in Harrisburg.

Before High Road officially opens, Flinchbaugh will open High Road Taproom on Nov. 24 at 146 Walden Way in Charter Homes & Neighborhoods’ Walden community in Silver Spring Township. It replaces Harty Brewing Co., which closed two years ago.

For the 30-seat taproom, Flinchbaugh is taking advantage of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Burnish Beer Co. becomes Salisbury's newest restaurant and brewery
Tucked in the corner of Naylor Mill Road and Northwood Drive is a pop of royal blue surrounded by bright green AstroTurf. The colorful sight is Burnish Beer Co., Salisbury's newest restaurant and brewery, the Salisbury Daily Times reported on November 18.

Co-owner and head brewer Randy Mills said it has been a "long road" to get to the brewery's opening.

Now that Burnish is serving guests, Mills said the brewery is prepared to give its guests a "fun experience."

Mills has strong roots in the Delmarva brewery business.

In 2009, he began his professional brewing career at Evolution Craft Brewing Co. when it was in Delmar.

Five years later, he co-founded Cambridge's RaR Brewing, where he was the head brewer.

However, as a Salisbury native, Mills wanted to work "in and for Salisbury."

Mills founded Burnish with three other partners: Mathew Schockley, Taylor Wade and Alex Fisher. Wade's family owns the building that now houses Burnish.

As north Salisbury's dining scene is dominated by chain restaurants, Mills said he believes the area could use something like Burnish.

Before the 40-year-old building could become a hub for beer and community, it had to undergo significant renovations. Mills said the building was dilapidated, with the ceiling coming down in some ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Jekyll Brewing may be coming to Gainesville
A popular Alpharetta micro-brew, Jekyll Brewing, may be coming to the midtown area of Gainesville, The Times reported on November 17.

Jekyll Brewing has been in talks with Midland Social owner, Bob Cheeley, for several months, though a lease agreement still has yet to be finalized, Jekyll CEO Mike Lundmark said.

Midland Social includes The Chair Factory, an event venue, and other commercial space on about 13 acres at 456 Industrial Blvd. It is bounded by Davis, Grove Street, Industrial Boulevard and Pine Street.

Jekyll submitted plans to the city of Gainesville to add 73 parking spaces off of Davis Street and 17 spaces off of Industrial Boulevard. They are also in the building permit review process for interior renovation and a brewery addition, Community and Economic Development Director Matt Tate wrote in an email.

The city and Cheeley have made efforts to revitalize the midtown area. The city moved Engine 209 in August from its longtime spot off of Jesse Jewell Parkway to the new Engine 209 Park at 878 Grove St., and Cheeley arranged the move of an early 20th-century Southern Railway baggage car in May to Midland Social.

Cheeley held an event for the train car’s move that featured ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Hot Plate Brewing Company hoping to launch in Lenox by next summer
After years of brewing beer at home, Sarah Real and Mike Dell’Aquila are preparing to open their own brewery, and realize a dream sparked by a brewery visit during a post-college road trip, the Spectrum News reported on November 15.

“That’s where I was like, ‘I want to do this,’” said Real. “And he was like, ‘Do what?’ and I’m like ‘This, all of this. I want to do this.’ But, for once in our lives, he was the level-headed one, and was like, 'Why don’t we use our degrees>', that we just literally got, and we were like, fine. But it was always a passion of mine.”

Real and Dell’Aquila kept brewing for themselves while pursuing their careers in New York City, learning new techniques, upgrading their equipment, and persevering through challenges which ultimately inspired their brewery name.

“We actually had an issue with the condo we were living in and we lost our gas,” said Dell’Aquila. “Sarah really didn’t want to give up on the dream a second time, and I didn’t either because I was like, who knows when we’ll feel that sort of inspiration again. So we went out and literally got a hot plate and started brewing beer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Bull Spit Brewing Company gets all-alcohol licence approval
If all goes well, there will soon be a new brewery at 5 Mill & Main in Lancaster, at the site of the former Battle Road Brewery, the MetroWest Daily News reported on November 18.

At its Nov. 16 meeting, the Maynard Select Board approved an all-alcohol license for Bull Spit Brewing Company.

At a public hearing before the vote, James Hunt, vice president of operations for Bull Spit, said he hopes to open the taproom in late January or early February 2022.

The brewery was founded in 2019 in Lancaster, opening on “the cusp of a pandemic that we didn’t know was coming,” Hunt said.

With plans to create a “destination experience” for patrons, they quickly adjusted the plan to create a distribution model, which led them to expand, first into Winchendon and then to Maynard, he said.

“We love the indoor space and we love the options for the outdoor space. And we loved the fact that it was essentially a turnkey brewing operation. We decided Maynard was a strategic spot for us and is going to be influential in creating and promoting our brand,” Hunt said.

The space has a full commercial kitchen and they are currently looking for a chef to create ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Go Brewing to open Illinois’ first nonalcoholic and low-alcohol brewery and taproom
Go Brewing is poised to open the state's first nonalcoholic and low-alcohol brewery and taproom early next year in Naperville, The Daily Herald reported on November 18.

Naperville City Council members on November 16 approved an increase in the number of liquor licenses for breweries from three to four, creating the opportunity for Go Brewing to open a location at 1665 Quincy Ave. It's a 7,000-square foot site that's been occupied by 2 Fools Cider, which is moving to a different location.

"Great tasting beer brings people together, but traditionally the nonalcoholic and low-alcohol alternatives haven't tasted very good," Go Brewing head brewer James Bigler said in a statement. "We're focusing on having great tasting beer that elevates your experience with family or friends without having to worry about the health and wellness impact of consuming an alcohol-centric product."

According to the Go Brewing concept plan, the build out will begin in January with expansion and reconfiguration of the current layout. The tasting room will open in March as production and distribution ramp up to provide consumers with a healthier, flavorful alternative to alcoholic beverages.

Go Brewing will start with five nonalcoholic and low-alcohol beers, including an IPA, lager, fruit infusion, stout and gluten-free ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Bryant’s announces opening of its Farm Brewery in Roseland
Bryant’s is formally announcing the opening of its Farm Brewery on November 20th 2021, located at 3224 E. Branch Loop in Roseland, VA, Brewbound reported on November 18.

Bryant’s, the makers of the cult favorite, Unicorn Fuel Hard Cider, is expanding into brewing beer on its sprawling 380 acre farm with an opening date of November 20th. The brewery opening will correspond with Bryant’s Apple Butter Festival. The Festival will include apple butter making, local vendors, live music, food trucks, and family friendly activities.

Bryant’s Brewing will be launching with two beers on November 20th. Roseland Wheat, a light hoppy American wheat beer made with sweet orange peel. Kala’s Brown Ale, a malty brown ale with a smooth finish. Additional taps will be rolling out in the weeks following including an Imperial Stout, a hazy DIPA, and a Galaxy Hop SMASH beer made with farm grown hops.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Steam Whistle Brewing and Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co. announce joint distribution deal
Two of the biggest craft breweries in Ontario have announced a joint distribution deal, something at least one long-time industry watcher suggested could be a prelude to a merger, the Toronto Star reported on November 16.

Toronto’s Steam Whistle Brewing and Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co., based in Vankleek Hill, Ont., said on November 16 that they’ll be merging their sales teams and distribution networks, effective immediately.

Steam Whistle CEO Greg Taylor said the new arrangement gives both breweries a broader portfolio of products to approach restaurants and bars with, including Steam Whistle’s flagship Pilsner and Beau’s Lug Tread, as well as several smaller brands brewed by each company.

“We see portfolio selling as a big part of the future,” said Taylor, who earlier this year reached a similar arrangement with B.C.-based Phillips Brewing and Malting Co. In 2019, Steam Whistle signed a deal to produce some brands from Colorado’s New Belgium under license.

Taylor denied the deal was the first step on the way to a possible merger of the two companies.

“There aren’t any plans for that,” Taylor said.

No money is changing hands between the two privately-held companies as part of the deal, but ongoing sales revenues will be split based on which ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Human Village Brewing Company to close down for good at the end of the year
Human Village Brewing Company on November 14 announced its time in the borough will come to a close at the end of the year.

The owner of the property the brewery leases at 148 South Broadway, Pitman has sold it, according to Richard Myers of Human Village.

"I would like to thank everyone for their support through the years," Myers said in a post on Human Village's Facebook page. "Owning the brewery and getting to know all of you has been an amazing experience. This place has always been about the community, getting to know you all, the music, and the fun that all of us have had together. The connections and this place have both been so very special to me, but as with everything, there is a time that it comes to an end."

Human Village opened in downtown Pitman in 2016 in the space formerly home to Bus Stop Music Café.

Myers said there are no plans to relocate the brewery.

Events, including Human Village's popular open mic night, will continue through Dec. 30, according to Myers.

Pitman is home to another brewery, Kelly Green, which came to the borough just months before Human Village arrived.

Myers urged people ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Brooklyn Park’s Blue Wolf Brewing Co. closed for good
Brooklyn Park-based Blue Wolf Brewing Co. announced it had closed its doors for good as of Friday, Nov. 12, the Business Journals reported on November 15.

Blue Wolf announced the decision on its website and Facebook page. "Rather than focus on what led to this decision we would rather focus on all of the positive memories we have from the past 3.5+ years with you," the brewery said in a statement.

Serving as Brooklyn Park’s first brewery, Blue Wolf launched about three years ago.

The 65-seat brewery/taproom, located at 8515 Edinburgh Centre Drive, was owned by Jennifer Campbell and her husband, Mike.

Although the Blue Wolf is closing, another brewery will soon be making its way to the area. The Brooklyn Park Planning commission recently approved plans for a new brewery located in the Stone Mountain Plaza in Brooklyn Park.

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine harvests 9.6 mln tonnes of barley to-date
Ukrainian farms have harvested 76.7 million tonnes of grain from 93.3% of the sowing area, with the yield averaging 5.16 tonnes per hectare, the agriculture ministry said on November 19.

The volume includes 32.3 million tonnes of wheat, 9.6 million tonnes of barley, 31.8 million tonnes of corn and small volumes of other grains, the ministry said.

It said farmers were still due to harvest the remaining 20% of the corn area.

Favourable weather could help Ukraine harvest a record 80.3 million tonnes of grain this year, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020, the ministry has said.

It has said the grain exports could jump to 61.5 million tonnes in the 2021/22 July-June season, from 44.7 million tonnes in 2020/21.

The volume could include 24.5 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million tonnes of corn and 5.2 million tonnes of barley.

Last season Ukraine exported 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million tonnes of wheat and 4.2 million tonnes of barley.

Barley news South Africa: South African Breweries betting on new drought-resistant barley varieties in South Africa
South African Breweries (SAB), part of Anheuser Busch InBev, is betting new drought-resistant barley varieties will help it maintain record annual production in its major domestic beer market and meet demand elsewhere on the continent, officials said.

The world's largest brewer is betting hi-tech natural cultivars and enhanced farming techniques in Africa will eliminate barley and malt shortages dampening expansion plans, Reuters reported on November 18.

"No barley, no beer. So, absolutely critical to have a sustainable supply chain of barley," said Josh Hammann, Africa director for agriculture development and sustainability at AB InBev in Africa.

Scientists say dryer conditions in South Africa due to global warming could diminish barley production in Caledon, the country's main growing area, where AB InBev also converts barley into malt at its flagship 180,000 tonne factory.

Malt is currently imported from Europe only when local production volumes do not meet quality parameters or if there is a crop failure due to drought. But, the long-term plan is to eventually export larger quantities of malt as barley harvests yield more, with Africa the main export target market, said company officials.

By using drought-resistant barley and improved agronomics, Hammann said AB InBev surpassed a target of reaching 475,000 metric tonnes of ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Diageo’s Epitome Reserve rare grain whisky enjoys success in India
Diageo highlighted that the success of its Epitome Reserve rare grain whisky was a “surprise” and yet bolsters plans for further innovations in India, The Drinks Business (db) reported on November 19.

Speaking to db, Michael Ward, head of global innovation at Diageo said: “It was a passion project from our India innovation team and it was very limited – just 2,000 bottles, but because of how it did, we may be looking at rerunning this or something similar. The response we had made us all a little stunned. Especially by how quickly it went.”

Ward explained that for a new brand to capture the same attention and command as high a price point as a known brand from the beginning is a great achievement and shows that the Indian market has a thirst for innovation and high end spirits.

“To price something that is a brand new brand at the same price as something you already know, like Johnnie Walker Blue into that market where brands are like a luxury trademark, is a big deal,” said Ward.

He added: “It just went to the Indian market. Right now, I think we were pleasantly surprised how well it sold through. We have a lot ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Coopers Brewery secures exclusive distribution rights for Japan’s Yebisu Premium Beer
Coopers Brewery has secured exclusive distribution rights for Yebisu Premium Beer, a prestigious Japanese beer with over 130 years of heritage, The Shout reported on November 19.

Yebisu, pronounced ‘Ebis’ in English, is brewed adhering to the Reinheitsgebot, Bavarian Purity Law, the 500-year law that stipulates only three ingredients can be used to brew the finest German beer; water, malt and hops.

Yeast is the fourth ingredient that is now allowed, but it’s not listed in the original law because yeast’s role in the fermentation process had not yet been discovered at the time that it was written.

Yebisu Brand Manager with Coopers Brewery, Mr Chris Levey, said Japanese beer continues to premiumise the beer category and grow in popularity with Australian drinkers.

“Yebisu is a symbol of Japan’s unwavering commitment to quality and craft, meeting the intersection of Australian drinkers’ desire for exploration and discovery and their attraction to true originals and authenticity.

“We expect the introduction of Yebisu will drive further interest in the Japanese beer segment, appealing to a broad range of discerning beer drinkers seeking discovery, quality and authenticity, and a richer, more rewarding flavour experience.”

Coopers is also distributor for leading Japanese brand, Sapporo Premium Beer, which continues to resonate well ...More info on site
