Australia: Australians predicted to continue spending more on alcohol with beer leading the pack
|
Australians are predicted to continue spending more on alcohol despite consumption levels decreasing as new analysis suggests a shift away from beer, 7News.com.au reported on July 7.
Per capita spending is forecast to grow by 2.8 per cent annually between 2021 to 2025, despite individual consumption declining by an annual rate of 1.2 per cent, analysis by Fitch Solutions says.
The trend indicates consumers are "trading up" from high-volume/low-value drinks such as beer for more expensive competitors such as wine and spirits.
The average spend is predicted to grow from A$974 per person in 2021 to A$1116 in 2025, while consumption drops from 106.3 litres to 101.4 litres over the same time.
Beer is still predicted to lead the pack in total consumption figures (66 per cent) in 2025, with wine and spirits collectively making up just under 34 per cent.
This equates to an increase of just under one percentage point for vino and hard liquor combined, as ales and lagers drop as a result.
Previous analysis has shown a surge in sales of alcohol-free variants as zero per cent options of beer, wine and spirits flood the market.

Germany: Small breweries manage to stay afloat thanks to their creativity

Whether coming up with a specialty beer, baking bread, holding online tastings or crowdfunding, it's safe to say that German breweries have not seen the pandemic as a holiday, dpa reported on July 5.
Even as the tide of infections seems to be receding across Europe, the economic effect of cancelled festivals and closed restaurants is still being felt in the industry, especially the smaller breweries.
Many of the microbreweries that have remained afloat fought through the crisis with creativity – and aren't giving up the fight just yet.
One of them is the Schanzenbraeu brewery in the southern German city of Nuremberg. In normal times, there are festivals every weekend from May through September that sell the brewery's beers on draft, says managing director Stefan Stretz. They were all cancelled in 2020.
Like all breweries, Schanzenbraeu tried to focus away from kegs – which had accounted for 25-30% of beer sold – and more on selling bottled beer through retail outlets during the pandemic. But now, that market has become "cutthroat", says Stretz.
So he came up with the idea of the Zusammen Halbe, a beer developed and made by nine local breweries during the pandemic. Stretz and his colleagues filled 40, 000 bottles

EU: Brewers of Europe sign new EU Code of Conduct on sustainability in the food and drink industry
|
The Brewers of Europe has added its name to a new EU-wide pledge to support the shift towards sustainable food systems. The Brewers of Europe was one of the founding signatories at a European Commission ceremony on July 5 to launch the new EU Code of Conduct on Responsible Food Business and Marketing Practices.
Signing up in the presence of EU First Vice-President Frans Timmermans and the European Commissioners for Health and the Internal Market, The Brewers of Europe pledged to pursue and build upon our six-year commitment to label ingredients and energy on beers across Europe.
The Brewers of Europe Ambition is that by end 2022 all beer bottles and cans list ingredients and energy per 100ml on the labels, just as all other non-alcoholic beverages legally have to do and in full conformity with Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers.
While EU law currently exempts alcoholic beverages over 1.2% abv from a legal obligation to list the ingredients and calorie content, The Brewers of Europe is delighted to add its weight to the European Commission campaign for all consumers to have access to this information.

Kenya: Keroche Breweries launches X beer as part of efforts to grow market share
|
Keroche Breweries has launched its latest product dubbed X beer, with an alcohol content of 8.8%, at its Naivasha factory. The launch featured a brief ceremony attended by its leading distributors and retailers, HapaKenya reported on July 3.
Speaking at the unveiling, Keroche CEO Tabitha Karanja said the new beer is a part of the brewer’s deliberate efforts to grow its market share to 20 percent. “The quality of brand X and its richness is unmatched in the present market. It is targeted at the middle and upper-end market. For years we have relied on imported strong beer. Being local manufacturers, we have chosen to fill this gap and give Kenyans a beer of great taste that makes for an easy enjoyable drinking experience,” she added.
Keroche Breweries is a fully Kenyan-owned company with a production plant with a capacity to produce 30 different brands. The launch came just months after the brewer unveiled Vienna Ice Strong Lager with 10% alcohol content in April this year.

South Africa: Alcohol industry asks for tax holiday due to ban on all liquor sales
|
With South Africa’s alcohol industry predicting that the current two-week ban on all liquor sales will result in R6.1 billion in lost retail sales, the sector is now lobbing the taxman and effectively the national treasury to defer at least R1.5 billion in related excise tax payments, algoafm.co.za reported on July 6.
“The latest 14-day ban of alcohol sales declared by the government has left the South African Liquor Brand Owners Association [Salba] no choice but to request that the South African Revenue Service [SARS] provide extended payment terms on the excise duties currently due,” the industry body said on Monday.
Salba represents major alcohol manufacturers, including Distell, Heineken, Diageo, Pernod Ricard, and DGB.
It has made such ‘tax holiday’ requests before when alcohol bans were in place for prior Covid-19 liquor trade and lockdown restrictions. In the past, these requests have been granted by the taxman.
The organisation says that should the government decide to extend the current alcohol sales ban beyond the initial 14 days (which expires on Sunday, July 11), then its tax deferment request needs to be applicable for the whole period until the ban is lifted.

Ukraine: Barley harvest could see significant losses due to adverse weather
|
Adverse weather conditions in Ukraine's key grain producing regions could lead to significant losses in its barley and wheat harvests, the APK-Inform agriculture consultancy said on July 5.
Ukraine has already started its 2021 grain harvest and expects an all-time high crop of around 76 million tonnes.
According to weather forecasters, in the first days of July, torrential rains were recorded in the Odessa, Mykolayiv, Kherson, Zaporizhshya, Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk regions.
"As a result of heavy rains ... local flooding and lodging of early grain crops are recorded, which significantly complicates harvesting and can lead to an increase in grain losses," the consultancy said.
APK-Inform says 3.2 million hectares of wheat and 1.4 million hectares of barley are concentrated in the affected regions which is 46% and 57% of the total sown area of these crops in the country.
It said forecasters had predicted a "high probability of adverse weather conditions with significant precipitation" in the coming days and this could increase the risks of losses for early grain crops.

India: Diageo challenges order permitting United Spirits share sale
|
Diageo has challenged an order of India’s Prevention of Money Laundering Act court, which permitted the sale of assets seized from Vijay Mallya to repay a consortium of banks some of the £1.15 billion they claim he owes to them, The Drinks Business reported on July 5.
Last month the Indian courts allowed the sale of shares Mallya held in United Breweries and United Spirits worth more than £600 mln but Diageo, through its Dutch subsidiary, contends it has a prior claim to some £30 mln worth of the USL shares and has been given three weeks by the court to press its case.
Diageo has previously told its shareholders that it laid claim to the shares as part of a complicated loan to Watson Ltd, the company behind Mallya’s Formula 1 grand prix racing team, originally granted by Standard Chartered Bank and backed by the shares as collateral.
When Mallya defaulted, as part of the 2013 takeover of USL, Diageo’s Dutch subsidiary had to repay the debt of more than £100 mln. Ever since, it has been seeking through India’s courts to reclaim the shares pledged by Mallya to Standard Chartered to back that debt.
