Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands boosts full-year forecast after quarterly beer sales increase 14%
Constellation Brands stock rose on June 30 after the spirits maker boosted its full-year forecast.

Constellation said it lost $908.1 million, or $4.74 a share in its fiscal first quarter, compared with a 94-cent loss in the year-ago period. On an adjusted basis, which strips out nonrecurring items, earnings per share were $2.33. Revenue climbed 3.3% to $2.03 billion. Analysts were looking for EPS of $2.35 on revenue of $2.02 billion.

For the full year, Constellation now expects to earn an adjusted $10 to $10.30 a share in fiscal 2022, up from a previous range of $9.95 to $10.25 a share and above the $10.06 consensus estimate.

Constellation stock rose 1.3% to $234 in recent trading.

Although profits were slightly below expectations, strong sales were a theme in the quarter. Beer sales, including its Corona and Modelo brands, were up 14% year over year to $1.57 billion, offsetting a 22% decline in sales of wine and spirits. Beer depletions, which track how quickly beer leaves the distributor for retailers, were a robust 10.7%, nearly mirroring pre-pandemic levels. Constellation expects beer sales to climb between 7% and 9% for the full year.

The company said it also plans an incremental $500 million in share ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Beer sales heat up ahead of July 4th holiday
While there continues to be so much focus on the still hot hard seltzer market, it's good old-fashioned beer sales that arguably deserve some more attention as the demand for suds picks back up amid the reopening of bars and restaurants from the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, Yahoo Finance reported on July 1.

"On-premise draft beer trends continue to improve," pointed out Goldman Sachs analyst Jason English in a note on July 1 looking at re-opening trends in the U.S. economy. To make his observation, English's team sliced and diced new data out of tech insights company BeerBoard. The outfit's technology assesses about $1 billion in bar sales and 60,000 products across the U.S.

English found that the percent of locations open and pouring beer stood at 92% for the weekend of June 17 to 20, up from 90% in January. The percentage of taps pouring beer ticked up to 71% for the weekend, up from 70% in the two weekends prior. Total volume of beer served per location rose 1% sequentially nationwide.

That said, the industry has a ways to go to recover fully from the pandemic even with trends moving in the right direction. Total beer volume per location for ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Canada barley seeded area estimate below March forecast
Statistics Canada released their updated 2021 seeded area estimates on June 29 putting barley seeded area at 8.296 mln acres (3.36 mln hectares) - an increase of 9.7% over 2020 seeded area, but below their March estimate of 8.613 mln acres (3.49 mln ha). The estimates in their Principal Field Crop Areas June report are based on a survey of producers conducted in May and June.

In their last outlook report on June 17, Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada used average yields of 70 bushels/acre, coupled with earlier StatCan area estimates, to forecast a 12.0 mln tonne barley crop for Canada. Keeping the 70 bushel yield, and using the new area estimates with typical abandonment rates, would imply an 11.5 mln tonne barley crop. However with current severe dryness and heat being experienced across the Prairies, yield prospects in many areas are diminishing quickly, and without precipitation in the very near future Canada’s barley crop may end up below the 2020 output of 10.7 mln tonnes.

The June 2021 Field Crop Survey, which collects information on field crop seeded areas in Canada, was conducted from May 14 to June 11, 2021, with approximately 25,000 farms. They were asked to report their seeded areas ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Michigan's beer industry supported more than 66,000 jobs in 2020
A new report by the National Beer Wholesalers Association and the Beer Institute found that Michigan's beer industry had an overall economic impact of $9.9 billion in 2020 and supported more than 66,000 jobs at breweries, distributors, retailers and other facilities, the Midland Daily News reported on July 1.

According to the report, Michigan beer distributors employ 4,866 people. The entire beer industry — which includes brewers, distributors, retailers and supporting industries like agriculture, transportation and manufacturing — was found to have this $9.9 billion economic impact, paying more than $2.6 billion in wages in 2020.

Midland Brewing Co. Marketing and Communications Leader Clark Bickham said the brewery was able to make it through the pandemic and increase some sales during the pandemic.

"There was a massive increase in can sales, that was one way to increase sales," Bickham said. "Keg sales were down so we ended up bringing in our own canning line. Our brewers and staff worked canning days and took care of putting them on the pallets and getting them ready for distributors.

"That’s been the biggest change and it’s been a benefit. We’ve been able to work on our own time and not have to work around another ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Littleport Brewing to celebrate its grand opening in Racine in July
Good things come to those to wait, right?

Just ask Chris and Mark Flynn, who are about to celebrate the grand opening of their Littleport Brewing, 214 Third St. in Racine, in July, OnMilwaukee.com reported on July 1.

The brewery opened to the public in mid-April after the Flynns spent nearly a last decade planning.

“We were overly optimistic, especially me,” says Chris Flynn, as we sit in the office of DP Wigley, across the street from the brewery. “But then we didn't expect the roof to blow off twice and stuff like that.”

The Flynns also own Wigley, which sells plants, essential oils, bird seed and other products in an 1849 mill building along the Root River, The building also houses their home brewing supply store, Hop to It.

The Flynns bought the mill building in 1998 and the stables building that now houses the brewery at the same time.

They installed a U-shaped bar and a brew system smack dab in the middle of the space, adding some tables and some simple decor, while maintaining the original exposed brick walls and structural timbers.

A garage door was added at the entrance and the place was ready.

A beer garden will be installed along the west side ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Limitless Brewing plans approved by Lenexa Planning Commission
Lenexa has advanced preliminary plans for Limitless Brewing to build a new brewery and taproom on 95th Street, the Shawnee Mission Post reported on June 30.

After hearing from about a dozen residents who shared a mix of support and concerns for the project, the Lenexa Planning Commission on Monday, June 28 voted 8-0 to recommend approval of preliminary plans for the small brewery. Commissioner Jason Leib was absent.

Limitless Brewing plans to relocate from its location in an industrial area near 95th and Pflumm to a vacant lot in the neighboring business district down the street. The new brewery and taproom will be located on the southeast corner of West 95th Street and Dice Lane.

The Lenexa City Council will consider the plan at its July 20 meeting.

The Limitless owners are gearing up for a groundbreaking in mid-September. The new facility would enable them to increase production, they say. Plans also include space for large outdoor seating and food trucks parking on the west end of the parking lot.

Here are some design renderings for the project presented to the planning commission:

Emily Mobley, co-owner of Limitless Brewing with her husband, Dave Mobley, said they’re looking forward to the project and taking next steps.

Brewery news USA, SC: Clemson’s first brewery Kite Hill Brewing Co to open its doors on July 4
The long wait for Clemson's first brewery is nearly over, the Greenville News reported on July 2.

Kite Hill Brewing Co. will open July 4 weekend in its Patrick Square location off Issaqueena Trail, according to their Facebook page. The brewery is open 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, but will hold its grand opening Sunday at noon.

Kite Hill is an easygoing brewery with plenty of indoor and outdoor space. During its soft opening on July 1, families, retirees from the neighboring Patrick Square and a few Clemson University students mingled in Kite Hill's open space with exposed metal, natural wood and soft greens.

It is the brainchild of Bryon Leggett and Bobby Congdon, two Clemson alums who have always dreamed of brewing beer together for the community.

"We've had an amazing amount of encouragement, support from community members that have just been dropping in," Leggett said. "And probably every 15 minutes folks will come to the door to tell us how excited they are."

To open, Kite Hill will offer a limited number of house brews, with plans to expand. Guest taps, cider, wine and soft drinks also are available. Small food items and sandwiches -think elevated bar food - will ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Crafty Cats Brewing to officially open its brewery space on July 3
Just about a year after announcing its opening in Greenville, the owners of Crafty Cats Brewing are eager to officially open their brewery space July 3, the Greenville Online reported on July 2.

The opening comes after a long year during which owners said COVID-19 delayed approval of their alcohol license.

Now, all is in order, and the beers are on tap at the space located at 1021 S. Main St. The brewery will celebrate its grand opening 4 p.m. - midnight Saturday.

Those beers are infused with creativity, a key trait of owner and head brewer, Aaron Burton’s style. Case in point, the salted maple jalapeno bacon infused stout that has become a surprise hit or the watermelon rind gose, or the cocktail ales, which are made with a beer base and infused with juices to create a cocktail-esque sip.

The brewery is the second phase of the multifaceted Crafty Cats Brewery, Coffee and Tea, of which Burton owns with his wife, Sara. Sara, who grew up in Brazil, brings the tea and coffeehouse piece and Aaron, with over a decade in the brewing business, brings the beer piece.

The tea and coffeehouse opened last August and has been generating a following with its ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Feed barley exports increase by 32%, malting drop by 11% in May
Australia exported 808,285 tonnes of feed barley in May, up 32 per cent from 610,758 tonnes shipped in April, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Malting barley exports in May dipped to 66,019 tonnes, down 11pc from the 74,068 tonnes shipped in April, and the sorghum volume also waned over May to 123,424 tonnes, down 16pc from 146,764 tonnes in April.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said May showed another strong month of demand for feed barley, with a continuation of business to Middle East and Asian destinations.

“The much-rumoured Iranian barley business has finally shown up on the numbers, with more cargo a possibility considering price spreads and the tight old-crop market in Germany,” Mr Roache said.

“Iran is a premium destination due to financing and execution limitations from certain countries, with the bulk of the Panamax-size execution usually loaded ex Germany.

“Iran hasn’t featured in bulk size ex Australia since 2016 and was sporadic at best before that.”

May shipments to Saudi Arabia have come in on the low side due to limited buying in April-May which followed a stocking up in the first quarter prior to the kingdom’s change to private-enterprise importing.

“We expect Saudi numbers ...More info on site

Guinness Nigeria Plc has acquired a 10-hectare strategic industrial asset in the heart of Ikeja industrial hub as the Diageo subsidiary plans to scale up its operations in Nigeria, The Nation reported on July 2.
