Brewery news USA, KS: Dry Lake Brewing becomes Great Bend’s first brewery ever
The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce staff and Ambassador’s Club hosted a ribbon cutting at 1305 Main Street to commemorate the opening of Dry Lake Brewing, the Great Bend Tribune reported on May 17.

Named after Lake Barton, Dry Lake is the first brewery ever in Great Bend. The brewery is entirely Barton County owned. Owners Kevin Burkey and Ryan Fairchild opened the brewery on May 6, with seven employees.

The brewery is open from 3-10 p.m. Thursdays and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. On days without a food truck offering food to purchase, patrons may bring their own food or have it delivered to the brewery.

Brewery news USA, TN: Ghost River Brewing Co. to open a second location in Memphis
Ghost River Brewing Co. will open a second location at 341-345 Beale in Memphis, Ghost River and Beale Street Management announced Tuesday, May 18.

The city’s first craft brewery, at 827 S. Main, anticipates holding a grand opening in July for its second site.

Ghost River Beale will comprise the food of chef Sobie Johnson of Flying Sobie’s Gourmet Kitchen, a taproom, an outdoor beer garden and live music.

The 14-year-old Ghost River is independently owned and operated.

The new site will be near the east end of the entertainment district.

Ghost River Brewing owner Bob Keskey said in a prepared statement that Beale Street and Ghost River will be a great partnership, “giving Memphians and tourists easier access to our assortment of hand-crafted beers — and we couldn’t be happier to help add to the vibrancy of Beale.”

Ghost River first became aware of chef Sobie Johnson because of his following within the food truck community.

Ghost River will provide the kitchen buildout and equipment, and Johnson will provide the food, including his signature ground chicken burgers. The Beale location will be Johnson’s first brick-and-mortar location.

“We are really looking forward to what the Ghost River/Flying Sobie’s team is going to bring to the street,” Jon Shivers, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Rockford Brewing Co. planning its second location in Rockford
Rockford Brewing Co. LLC has unveiled plans to renovate a nearby historic building and expand with the new Malph’s Pizza Pub concept, MiBiz reported on May 19

The nearly 5,800-square-foot pizzeria, distillery and brewery will take shape in the former Vitale’s Pizza of Rockford, located at 42 E. Bridge St., just steps away from the existing brewery.

The partners behind Rockford Brewing Co. had been in talks for months with former Vitale’s owner Terry Prowoznik to buy the restaurant, and eventually signed a purchase agreement in May 2020, just as the first wave of the pandemic took hold.

Rockford Brewing co-founder Seth Rivard said the timing of the purchase worked well because the brewery was able to leverage its Paycheck Protection Program loan to bring on all of the Vitale’s employees, including Prowoznik, who continues to consult as he transitions to retirement. Rivard said the company also used the time to implement new point of sale systems and integrate the operation under the Rockford Brewing entity.

“We were planning to buy it and as COVID hit, we were still negotiating,” Rivard said. “We decided it was now or never, and now was the best time to buy because we had the extra ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: MainStage Brewing Co. to launch in downtown Lyons on May 22
If walls could talk, the red sandstone building at 450 Main St. on the west side of downtown Lyons would have captivating stories to tell, the Longmont Times-Call reported on May 19.

Now, its next chapter is about to begin.

Starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, co-owners Sam Scruby and Eric Kean will open their new business, MainStage Brewing Co., at the location.

Inside the 2,000-square-foot building, customers will find a selection of 14 craft beers to pair with a menu of pizza and chicken. Scruby and Kean leased the kitchen to Henry Myers, of Kinfolk Pizza + Chicken, who will be cooking up hand tossed pizza, chicken wings and boneless chicken strips. Outside, the 3,200-square-foot patio, which is dog friendly, will provide the chance to soak in some spring sunshine, while sipping an icy, foamy brew.

In the next two to three weeks, there will be live music performances and later this year, the business partners also have plans to start brewing their own beer.

Kean, of Longmont, grew up in Lyons and wants to see the business help the town thrive.

“Lyons community has been up, down, right, left through the ringer a couple of times in the last 10 years,” he said. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Rad Beer Co. to hold grand opening on May 21
The partners behind Rad Brat, a newly opened specialty eatery in Dana Point, are pleased to announce the grand opening of brewery and tasting room concept, Rad Beer Co. at 12 p.m. on Friday, May 21, 2021. Located at 1301 S Lewis Street in Anaheim, Rad Beer will be open daily, Brewbound reported.

Friends, entrepreneurs, and craft beer enthusiasts, the all-star team behind the brand includes Cameron Collins, (Founder of Brew Ha Ha Productions), Dylan Mobley (former head brewer at Bottle Logic Brewing and current head brewer of Helmsman Ale House of Newport Beach), Joe Wilshire (Docent Brewing / Project Social) and Steve Martin (Project Social). As natives of the Golden State, the partners wanted to ensure that the spaces they create embody the best of California culture by merging a lively and unpretentious ambiance with solid beers and a killer soundtrack.

“Anaheim has an incredible craft beer scene,” said Cameron Collins, partner of Rad Beer. “We’re stoked to bring a rad new destination to the beer hub and give people a place where they can discover their new favorite beer, listen to some great music, and enjoy being social again.”

Rad Beer is housed in a 4,550 square-foot space with a tasting ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, DE: Dewey Beer Company already open in Harbeson
As more people are vaccinated against COVID-19 and outdoor restrictions are lifted, it will definitely be a good time to go outside and drink a beer.

With fortuitous timing, Dewey Beer Company is ready for people to do just that, with the opening of its new brewery and tasting room on Route 5 in Harbeson, CapeGazette.com reported on May 19.

Located near the intersection of Route 9 and Route 5, the new Dewey Beer Company facility was nearly two years from concept to completion. Co-owner Brandon Smith said the brewery had been looking to expand its production capacity for some time, but was looking for the right site.

They found it with the facility in Harbeson, which allows Dewey Beer Company to brew up to 5,000 barrels a year, with the capacity to expand up to 15,000 in the future. The new facility also includes a canning line and a tasting room with 45 indoor and 45 outdoor seats.

“We always had our eye on making modern and fun beer,” Smith said. “That kept us growing in our spot; we always could find a little room for another tank, but we were running out of room. We were running into ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Necromancer Brewing Co. opens for can sales in Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh’s craft beer family welcomes a new member on May 21, when Necromancer Brewing Co. opens for can sales at 2257 Babcock Blvd. in the North Hills, in what had been a USA Baby store, NEXT Pittsburgh reported.

Inside the 14,400-square-foot building, which also previously housed a Spirit Halloween store, owners Ben Butler and Aaron Easler will sell four-packs of N-E IPA, Ever and a lemony grisette called Wildwood. Next weekend they’ll release two more mainstay beers.

You can pick up the bundles of joy from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 21 and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23. Or until the coolers are kicked.

Necromancer’s thing is resurrecting dead beer styles and giving them a modern incarnation.

“I’ve always wanted to have a brewery, but I didn’t want it to offer only trendy beers,” says Butler, a certified cicerone, the beer industry equivalent of a sommelier.

It’s not a new concept. The American craft beer revolution started in the 1980s by folks reviving old standbys such as India Pale Ale for the next generation.

Brewmaster Lauren Hughes, a veteran homebrewer and member of the Pink Boots Society and the Master Brewers Association, has spent years researching ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Moeller Brew Barn to open a third location in Dayton
The owners of Moeller Brew Barn announced their plans to open a third location in downtown Dayton, the Sydney Daily News reported on May 19.

The new brewery, kitchen and tap room will be located at 424 E. First St. within Water Street District, near RiverScape MetroPark and across from Day Air Ballpark, home of the Dayton Dragons. Construction is set to begin in July, with a targeted opening in spring 2022 – just in time for the Dayton Dragons’ home opener.

This will be the third Moeller Brew Barn, which also has locations in Maria Stein and Troy. The newest location will have onsite brewing, three bars and a pet- and bike-friendly outdoor beer garden that will feature expansive views of the ballpark.

When determining their next location for the brand, co-owners Nick Moeller and Anthony Scott said they didn’t have to look far.

“The Miami Valley has a rich history of dreamers and a beer brewing legacy,” Moeller said. “We’ve seen the re-emergence of local breweries, and we’re looking forward to being part of the excitement in Dayton.”

“Moeller Brew Barn isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a destination – and we’re in great company being located next to the new AC ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Square Knot Brewing Co. buying current Three Huskies Brewing location in Canandaigua
Square Knot Brewing Co. may soon have a new home, MPNnow.com reported on May 18.

The brewery, which earlier this year learned it had won gold medals in the 2020 U.S. Open Beer Championships, opened on Pleasant Street in February 2020, shortly before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to close for a time before reopening at a limited capacity.

Owners Nate Crane and Paul Newhook, former Canandaigua volunteer firefighters and friends, are purchasing the current Three Huskies Brewing location on Lakeshore Drive along with the people behind Clarky’s Twisted Sauce.

The deal was finalized on May 18.

Crane said he has no exact date, but they are hoping to open soon. Square Knot will continue operating at its present site for the time being, according to a post on its website.

Over the years, the small Pleasant Street location has housed Twisted Rail Brewing Co., Peacemaker Brewing Co. and now Square Knot.

“This has been a great spot for all three breweries that have been here, but we all have kind of run into the same thing. You get to a certain point and it’s time go bigger," Crane said. “We’re all very excited.”

More details will be shared soon, ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Pub operator Marston’s reveals £105.5 mln pre-tax loss but post-lockdown sales inspire optimism
While pub operator Marston’s has revealed a £105.5 mln pre-tax loss in the 26 weeks to 3 April, the firm cites post-lockdown sales hitting 80% of pre-pandemic levels as cause for optimism, The Morning Advertiser reported on May 19.

According to its most recent interim results statement for the 26 weeks to 3 April, the Wolverhampton-based operator of 1,500 pubs revealed a total pre-tax loss of £105.5 mln – versus £31.1 mln recorded during the equivalent period in the previous financial year.

On top of this, Marston’s revealed that its total revenue fell from £343.3 mln during the first half of the previous financial year, to £55.1 mln during the most recent half-year.

However, the firm posted a net profit of £199.3 mln – compared to a £28 mln loss made during the equivalent period during the previous financial year – due to £291 mln made from the its disposal of brewing business into the Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company joint venture.

Marston’s also revealed that it had drawn down £164 mln of a £280 mln bank facility, which is in place until 2024, providing headroom of £116 mln.

Brewery news Australia & New Zealand: Brewers may have to follow more mandatory labelling standards
Food Standards Australia New Zealand is undertaking industry consultation as it proposes to introduce further mandatory labelling requirements onto alcohol products, the Australian Brews News reported on May 20.

After the industry battled over pregnancy warning labelling last year, the focus has now turned on nutrition labelling.

These new rules will force brewers and other alcohol producers to include energy, carbohydrate and sugar content information on beer packaging. Alcohol products are currently exempt from having to provide nutrition information.

In recent months, FSANZ engaged with key industry stakeholders including the Independent Brewers Association, the Brewers Association, consisting of Lion, Carlton & United Breweries and Coopers, and the Brewers Guild of New Zealand. These industry organisations are currently making submissions.

“We expect to report to the FSANZ Board on this initial work in early June 2021, and subject to their consideration commence a second stage of work to explore regulatory and/or non-regulatory options for energy labelling of alcoholic beverages, and identify a preferred approach,” FSANZ said in a statement to Brews News.

The proposals have been met with dismay from the industry which was already forced to make its case against mandatory labelling with pregnancy warning labels. The IBA worked out would cost A$100 million over ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Fire breaks out at iconic Guinness Brewery
The iconic Guinness Brewery, and national treasure of the Emerald Isle, suffered from a small fire at St James’s Gate, just weeks before the pubs reopen. Firefighters rushed to the scene at the brewery near the iconic Guinness Storehouse in Dublin shortly after 10am on May 19, The Journal reports.

At around midday, a “small fire” was extinguished at the brewery and is understood not to have affected the brewing operations. The incident had been contained in the barley roaster drum, and thankfully, reduced the risk of spreading to other rooms or nearby buildings.

Nearby stations, Dolphin’s Barn and Tara Street sent three Dublin Fire Brigade units to the scene. Accompanied with breathing apparatuses, firefighters entered the building, just off School Street, to tackle the small fire.

A spokesperson of Diageo told The Journal that a “small fire” had broken out “inside a barley roaster drum at Saint James’s Gate”. The incident was contained quickly, and we were back in operation at our roast house in a matter of a few hours, with no impact on brewing operations.”

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council said units were called to a fire at the brewery, shortly after 10.00 am yesterday morning. The fire was located ...More info on site
