Brewery news Australia: Beer giant Lion looking for new CEO
Beer giant Lion is on the hunt for a new chief executive after Stuart Irvine signalled he would be stepping down after eight years at the helm of the company which owns beer brands Tooheys, XXXX Gold, West End and James Boag, The Australian Financial Review reported on May 14.

The company has slimmed down after the A$560 million sale of its Lion Dairy & Drinks milk and yoghurt operations to Vegemite owner Bega Cheese, which was finalised earlier this year. That gave Bega big brands such as Dairy Farmers, Yoplait, Big M, Masters and Farmers Union.

Mr Irvine said it was the right time to start the process for a transition to a new boss at Lion to oversee the next leg of the company’s strategy after a busy few years.

That included the acquisition of a Colorado-based craft beer company, New Belgium Brewing in 2019 to fire up growth as the mainstream beer market across the industry kept declining.

Lion chairman Rod Eddington said Mr Irvine had been a strong leader through a time of unprecedented change across the food and beverage sectors.

Lion is owned by Japanese brewing conglomerate Kirin Corp, which completed a full takeover of the company in 2009.

Brewery news South Korea: Hite Jinro Co. starts exporting its Terra lager
Hite Jinro Co., South Korea's second-largest beverage company, said on May 12 it has kicked off exports of its popular lager beer brand Terra, the Yonhap News reported.

Hite Jinro said it will export the first batch of 1.2 million Terra bottles to the United States, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Sales of the Terra lager beer will start in Hong Kong this month, with the product likely to hit store shelves in the U.S. and Singapore after mid-June.

Hite Jinro said it has picked the three regions because awareness of South Korea alcohol is high there and demand for Terra is strong.

With the start of Terra exports, the company said, it will ramp up efforts to increase consumer interest in Korean beer products.

Cumulative sales of the Terra lager beer have exceed 1.65 billion bottles since its debut in March 2019.

Barley news EU: Barley shipments to third countries up 1% in July-April
EU barley shipments to third countries in July 1 - April 26 were 6.505 mln tonnes, 1% more than a year ago, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in May.

The largest exporters were France with 2.74 mln tonnes, Germany with 1.26, and Romania with 0.98 mln tonnes.

The main export destinations for European barley were China with 2.47 mln tonnes and Saudi Arabia with 1.22 mln tonnes.

Barley news Canada: Canada ships most of its barley export target for this crop year
Canada’s barley exports in August-April were around 3 mln tonnes, of which 2.6 mln to China, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their May report.

The export target is 3.5 mln tonnes for the crop year August-July 2020/21. Canadian farmers plan to seed 8.613 mln acres (3.485 mln ha) of barley this year vs. 7.561 mln acres in 2020. Alberta will be the largest province with 1.6 mln, followed very closely by Saskatchewan with 1.57 mln acres.

Markets were calm in April, China being absent from the market, and domestic maltsters on the sidelines, unhappy with the existing price levels.

Barley news France: Crop ratings for winter barley stable, spring barley conditions improved
Crop ratings for French wheat and winter barley were stable in the week to May 10 while spring barley conditions improved, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on May 14, suggesting rain has helped cereals after a dry, cold April, Reuters reported.

An estimated 79% of French soft wheat was in good or excellent condition, unchanged from the previous week, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal crop report.

That ended four weeks of declining ratings for France's main cereal crop, having endured low rainfall and severe frosts.

FranceAgriMer does not give reasons for rating trends in its weekly updates, but officials this week said that the return of rain had stabilised growing conditions.

The good/excellent scores for winter barley and durum wheat were also unchanged on the week, at 76% and 69% respectively.

For spring barley, the corresponding rating rose to 85% from 82% after holding steady the previous week, FranceAgriMer's report showed.

Widespread rain this week and more showers forecast for next week could further boost soil moisture, though the grain market is also monitoring cool temperatures for any potential delay to crop development.

Crop ratings in France, the European Union's biggest grain producer and exporter, remain much higher than a year ago, when crops suffered from ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Early spring grain sowing almost completed
Ukrainian farms have almost completed 2021 early spring grain sowing, seeding more than 1.9 million hectares of various crops as of May 13, the agriculture ministry said on May 14.

The area included 1.33 million hectares of barley, 229,600 hectares of peas, 186,800 hectares of oats and 174,700 hectares of spring wheat, the ministry said in a statement.

It said farmers had also sown 3.9 million hectares of corn, equating to 74% of the planned area.

The economy ministry has said that favourable weather could help Ukraine to harvest at least 75 million tonnes of grain this year, versus 65 million tonnes in 2020.

Scientists expect the harvest to reach up to 71 million tonnes.

The agriculture ministry said the overall grain area is likely to total 15.5 million hectares this year, including 7.6 million of spring grains.

The spring sowing area is expected to include 1.388 million hectares of barley, 176,600 hectares of wheat, 5.327 million hectares of corn, 194,050 hectares of oats and 235,400 hectares of peas.

The ministry said farms had also sown 4.6 million hectares of sunflower, equating to 72% of the expected area, and completed sugar beet sowing at 226,200 hectares.

The economy ministry has said that a drop in the sugar beet ...More info on site

Whisky news Australia: Australian Distillers Association welcomes federal budget boost
After years of lobbying by the Australian drinks industry, the federal government will allow eligible distillers to receive a full refund of any excise duty they pay, up to an annual cap of A$350,000 as part of the 2021-22 budget, goodfood.com.au reported on May 13.

Until now, local brewers and distillers have only been able to receive a repayment of 60 per cent of the excise they pay up to an annual cap of A$100,000.

The boost has been welcomed by the Australian Distillers Association, whose president Stuart Gregor says the decision provides relief for hundreds of craft distillers around the country that have been severely affected by COVID-19.

There are more than 300 distillers across Australia, with about two-thirds in remote and regional areas.

The amended excise cap brings the tax incentives offered to the spirits industry in line with that of small wine and beer makers.

"It means craft distillers will have more capital available to help their businesses grow and to employ more locals – bringing important economic benefits through job creation, expanding farm production, regional tourism and hospitality for our communities," Gregor says.

The move comes as Roy Morgan released data from April showing the number of Australians who drink alcohol has ...More info on site
