Brewery news Canada, AB: Big Rock Brewery Inc. announces nine-month and third-quarter financial results
Big Rock Brewery Inc. announced on October 31 its financial results for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2019.

"As the former Alberta beer mark-up policy persisted through the majority of the third quarter, our margins continued to be under significant pressure in Alberta , however, given the significant operating cost reductions we implemented in the second quarter of 2019, we reported EBITDA (as defined below) of C$0.6 million and a significant margin improvement year-over-year when normalized for the new Alberta beer mark-up framework which came into effect in September," said President & CEO Wayne Arsenault .

As previously announced, the Government of Alberta and the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis agency (the "AGLC") amended the mark-up policy for Alberta beer sales, effective September 13, 2019 , which significantly reduced the Corporation's Alberta beer mark-up rate back to a rate in-line with what the Corporation was subject to in 2018.

"Despite the significant regulatory headwinds faced through the majority of 2019 to-date, we managed to navigate the last two quarters at a much lower cost structure while still preserving our ability to pursue our long term strategy once a resolution was reached," said President & CEO Wayne Arsenault . "Now that ...More info on site

Whisky news Canada: Canadian whisky’s reputation on the upswing
After having been disparaged for years, Canadian whisky’s reputation is on the upswing. While spirits fans have long extolled the virtues of Scotch, Irish and American whisk(e)y, Canadian whisky has been left in the doldrums. But a raft of investment from global players, the opening of new artisan distilleries, innovative expressions and, critically, a renewed focus on quality mean the tide is turning, The Spirits Business reported on November 1.

The history of whisky making in Canada can be traced back to 1769, when the first distillery was built in what is now Quebec. In 1890, Canada became the first country in the world to mandate whisky production. In 2018, Canadian whisky sales rose by 0.4% to 28.3 million nine-litre cases globally, according to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis. In the US – the category’s biggest market – 17.4m nine-litre cases of Canadian whisky were sold, generating nearly US$2 billion in revenue for distillers, according to the Distilled Spirits Council.

“We’re starting to see that Canadian whisky is in a huge renaissance; there’s tons of renewed interest in the category,” says Chris Thompson, North American brand ambassador for Ontario’s Forty Creek. “For decades there were only five or six major players, and now ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Ashton Brewing Company hoping to launch in Middlesex by March 2020
Ever since late March when Demented Brewing Company shut its Middlesex doors for the last time, the tasting room and brewing facilities at 600 Lincoln Blvd. have been closed, MyCentralJersey.com reported on October 31.

However, by March 2020, a new brewery plans to call the space home.

Ashton Brewing Company, owned by husband-and-wife team and Long Valley residents Steve and Donna Ashton, is currently renovating as they plan for a brewery focused on “flavorful, balanced and drinkable beers,” said Steve Ashton, who is also head brewer.

So far, Ashton Brewing Company has opened up boarded-up windows in the tasting room and removed the false wall which held Demented Brewing Company’s distinctive mural.

“We are putting more windows in, so it will be lighter and brighter,” said Ashton. “They did a good job of making it feel like Demented Brewing, but it won’t be like that anymore.”

Ashton said he does fear people will associate Ashton Brewing Company with Demented Brewing Company at first, but since the outside has been redone, the new logo is up and the ambiance is “100 percent different,” he said, he thinks the change will be obvious.

The renovated space inside the 1890s brick building will house a solid wood bar, wood ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: DeFrancesco Farm Hops joins fast moving world of farm brewing
DeFrancesco Farm Hops in North Branford joined the fast moving world of farm brewing during this past week-end, Patch.com reported.

Its mission is to brew only the finest beer using Connecticut fresh, locally-sourced ingredients from their family farm DeFrancesco Farm Hops and other CT Hop Growers.

CtBeer.com said: "Lets raise a glass and welcome them to the CT Beer Community. All the best. Cheers!"

North Branford's first farm brewery operation and retail patron site will be established at 418 Forest Road.

Back in January, the Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC) voted unanimously, 4-0, to approve the farm brewery's special permit request and site plan. The application was brought by co-owner Alex DeFrancesco, a member of the North Branford DeFrancesco Farms family. DeFrancesco, who is also a member of the PZC, recused himself from the commission's review.

The DeFrancesco family will combine two parcels of farmland behind 418 Forest Road into one, creating a single parcel of at least 10 acres of active farm, as required by the town's farm brewery zoning text amendment approved in 2018. Once combined, the new parcel at 418 Forest Road will be over 16 acres.

It will accommodate an average of 98 patrons in its first-floor Tap Room and outdoor patio ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Astro Brewing aiming at June 2020 opening in Tampa
Tampa is a beer lover’s paradise: it has Cigar City, 81 Bay, Cannon, 7venth Sun, Ulele, and the list goes on. Next summer, the city of Tampa will welcome another new brewery to its sprawling trail. Blast off with Astro Brewing, ThatsSoTampa.com reported on October 29.

The new tasting hub will open at 3329 South Westshore Boulevard in the former Jasmine Thai space, though they’ll only take over half of it. The owners hope to have the doors open by June 2020.

“We aim to be a very small neighborhood brewery offering quality ales and lagers to local folks,” wrote the owners in an Instagram message to ThatsSoTampa.com. “We will have a very small brewing system (3.5 barrel) one of the smallest in Tampa actually.”

Their small size will allow Astro Brewing to rotate beer rapidly, and experiment more. They plan to serve all of the beer they produce on site. That’s right, no canning, no bottling, no distribution, the company confirmed.

Brewery news USA, TX: Flying Man Brewing ‘entertaining idea of selling itself’
Flying Man Brewing Co. is “entertaining the idea of selling [its] company,” according to an Oct. 29 Facebook post.

The brewery, located at 2400 Patterson Industrial Drive, Pflugerville, opened in October 2017 and sells handcrafted Texas ales, locally made wines and mead.

New owners have not yet been announced, and current co-owners Matt Barker and Adam Caudill said they will continue events and day-to-day operations as usual.

Brewery news USA, DE: Thompson Island Brewing Company already open in Rehoboth
It’s a few hours into an Oct. 22 soft opening for Thompson Island Brewing Company and Matt Patton, the restaurant’s director of operations, is standing at the far corner of the newly minted bar with a smile, CapeGazette.com reported on October 31.

“Everything is going good,” said Patton. “It’s exciting to see all the hard work come to fruition.”

Thompson Island Brewing Company, a 250-seat brewpub off Route 1 in Rehoboth, is the 12th restaurant for SoDel Concepts. It’s located immediately south of the company’s Bluecoast Seafood Grill & Raw Bar, which opened in 2017.

Patton, who started working at SoDel Concepts in 2013, has been involved with every step of construction with both restaurants. He said the opening of Thompson Island is a years-long vision he’s shared with SoDel Concepts President Scott Kammerer and SoDel Concepts Founder Matt Haley, who died from injuries sustained in a 2014 motorcycle accident while on a humanitarian trip in India.

“During my very first meeting with them, they asked me where I saw myself in five years, and I told them I would be running a brewpub,” said Patton. “We’re a year late, but I think Matt would be excited and proud to see what’s become of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Rogness Brewing Company set to open with new name and location in early 2020
Rogness Brewing Company, a handcrafted brewing business formerly located at 2400 Patterson Industrial Drive, Pflugerville, is set to open with a new name at a new location in early 2020, according to an Oct. 29 post on its Facebook page.

A lease has been signed and new equipment ordered, according to the post, but the new name and address have not yet been disclosed.

Brewery news USA, IN: Grand Junction Brewing Co. closes original brew pub in Westfield
Grand Junction Brewing Co. has closed its original brew pub in downtown Westfield, nearly six years after it opened, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported on October 30.

The company, founded by Jon Knight and Charlie Wood, said its tap room and production facility, which opened two-plus years ago about a mile away from the brew pub, will remain open.

Company owners closed the brew pub at 110 S. Union St. on Sunday, October 27 and made the announcement on Facebook that night.

“Grand Junction Brewing Co. got its humble start almost 6 years ago in downtown Westfield,” the post states. “We wanted to help provide a spark to downtown Westfield’s rebirth, and we like to think we played a small part in doing so. … It’s a bittersweet decision, as this is where it all began for us.”

In the post, the owners say they realized when they opened the tap room in 2017 that there would come a time when they didn’t need to operate two locations so close together.

The bigger tap room facility, on 181st Street near Grand Park, hosts numerous events, including craft beer parties, corporate outings, wedding receptions and community fundraisers. The owners said they have seen double-digit growth each ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Black Lotus Brewing Company closes due to financial issues
After 13 years in downtown Clawson, Black Lotus Brewing Company closed on Wednesday, October 30. Staff were notified on Monday, October 28 that the brewpub was shutting down due to financial issues, according to the Detroit Free Press.

An employee speaking with WDIV alleges that staff were asked by the owners not to immediately cash their final paychecks when they received them on Friday, October 25 suggesting that there might not be enough money to immediately make payroll. The Oakland County Register of Deeds tells the Free Press there are two state liens against the business for $13,000 and $23,000.

In August, a $450,000 listing for an unnamed Oakland County brewpub was posted to the Black Lotus Facebook page, stirring speculation about the brewery. The listing described a brewery established in 2006, the same year Black Lotus opened. An individual with knowledge of the business, confirmed that the confidential listing was indeed for Black Lotus. The listing has since been taken down.

Black Lotus was founded in September 2006 by partners Mark Harper, Michael Allan, and Jodi Allan during a time when Clawson’s downtown area was in the midst of an economic downturn. The brewery became a popular spot for live music, beer, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Two Sergeants Brewing announces permanent closure
Two Sergeants Brewing has announced with “profound sadness” that it has gone out of business and permanently closed its brewery and taproom in Edmonton, the Canadian Beer News reported on October 28.

Two Sergeants was launched in 2015 in Fort Saskatchewan, a small community northeast of Edmonton, by partners Kevin Moore and Keith Edwards. The company started as a contract brewer before opening a small brewery and tasting room which was in operation until early 2018 when Edwards left the partnership and Moore announced plans to move to Edmonton.

Those plans hit a snag due to zoning issues with the new location, but the brewery and taproom finally opened in late 2018. However, brewing operations were halted and the taproom closed last month with an announcement on Facebook indicating that it was “due to factors beyond our control including a very cold summer and licensing issues with the city.”

While the September closure was intended to be temporary while the business was being re-structured, a statement was released last Friday indicating that it would be a permanent shutdown due to “zoning and bureaucratic delays [that] prevented us from reaching our full potential,” as well as a “loss of investor confidence [that] has placed ...More info on site

Barley news Ghana: Guinness Ghana Limited on track to reach 70 percent local raw material sourcing
Beverage producer Guinness Ghana Limited says it is on track to reach 70 percent local raw material sourcing from Ghanaian farmers, GhanaWeb reported on November 1.

This follows research by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology which showed that the company has increased its local raw material sourcing from 12 percent to 55 percent.

Speaking to Citi Business News on how the development has positively impacted the lives of farmers, the Corporate Relations Director of Guinness Ghana Limited, Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah stated that over 30,000 farmers have benefited from the initiative.

“Since its inception, Guinness Ghana has grown its percentage of local raw material usage from 12% in 2012 to the 55% this 2019, a firm demonstration of our commitment to the agenda”, she stressed.

According to her, the consistent growth in local raw material uptake has been achieved through significant capital investment to re-engineer plant and equipment, as well as technical and financial support to farmers to improve crop yield.

Guinness Ghana’s Local Raw Material (LRM) intervention started in 2012 in line with Government’s Policy initiative to incorporate the use of local raw materials in the production of our alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Brewery news UK: AB InBev confirms Corona beer is now being brewed in the UK
Anheuser-Busch InBev is producing Corona beer in the UK as well as in China, as the brewer ramps up overseas production of a brand previously brewed only in Mexico.

The company confirmed on November 4 to just-drinks an analyst report last month that Corona production started in China in May. A spokesperson for AB InBev also said brewing is now taking place in the UK.

In a post last month on AB InBev UK's website, the brewer confirmed plans to start Corona brewing at its Magor, South Wales, site. The company said it will use the same production process used to make Corona in Mexico for the past 90 years, including the same yeast strain.

Lloyd Manship, the Magor brewery manager, said: "Corona's sales value has been growing by double digits (in the UK), so it makes sense to increase Corona's availability here."

In AB InBev's Q3 results last month, CEO Carlos Brito said the company had "recently started brewing Corona locally in certain markets where it's growing rapidly".

The AB InBev spokesperson did not immediately confirm if Corona is being brewed in markets other than Mexico, the UK and China.

Previously, Corona was only produced in Mexico. AB InBev owns the brand globally, with ...More info on site
