India: United Breweries (Holding) Company seeks court’s permission to sell shares
|
On December 20, United Breweries (Holding) Company (UBHL) contended before the Karnataka High Court that the total assets of the company amount to Rs 7,500 crore, and said that an application filed seeking permission to sell its shares to clear debt, was pending, The New Indian Express reported.
Senior counsel Sajan Poovaiah made this submission before the division bench of Justice L Narayanaswamy and Justice P B Bhajanthri, which is hearing the appeal filed by UBHL against the order passed to shut down the company, which is a corporate guarantor to the defunct Kingfisher Airlines Ltd.
Poovaiah submitted that boards of contributory firms have resolved to offer assets worth Rs 15,000 crore to clear the debt to save UBHL.

Belgium: Local businessmen to resume production of Peeterman beer
|
Businessman Patrick Vanoppen will resume production of Peeterman beer at the Breda brewery, whose rights he has purchased from AB InBev, The Brussels Times reported on December 25.
The production of the Leuven brew had been stopped in 1974.
“With the Breda Brewery, we’ll be able to inject new life into the old Leuven beers,” said Bert Crombez, head of creation. “Thus far, we’ve been treading modestly with the Goldor pils and Blondor blond, but soon we’ll be relaunching Peeterman on the market and others will follow, like Adrianus.”
The brewery should be in operation by 2020 in a private hotel in the Leuven city centre. In the meantime, production will be delegated to the De Kroon brewery in Flemish Brabant.
A more or less bitter version of Peeterman beer could be manufactured. However, that decision will be left to the public which will be able to taste the two flavours at the end-of-year Corrida on the 30th of December. “The degree of acidity did, in fact, change the taste of the beer around World War II,” Crombez explained.

Spain: Mahou San Miguel invests in new distribution model for southern Spain
|
Spanish beer maker Mahou San Miguel has invested €2.1 million in a new distribution model for the south of Spain, FoodBev.com reported on December 21.
The firm said the project ensures both the competitiveness and long-term sustainability of its sites in Córdoba, Granada, Málaga and Jaén.
It added that the investment reinforces its commitment to the Andalucía region in the south of Spain, where it employs more than 300 people.
Madrid-headquartered Mahou San Miguel makes beer brands as San Miguel, Alhambra and Reina, as well as mineral water brands Sierra Natura, Solán de Cabras and Sierras de Jaén.
Carmen Calama, Mahou San Miguel logistics director, said: “This project highlights that, for us, Andalucía has a strategic importance and, therefore, we are continuing to strengthen our commitment to the area through continuous investment in our facilities and initiatives that boost its economy and development.”
Earlier this year, Mahou San Miguel joined forces with 20 of its domestic distributors in Spain in a bid to improve the sustainability of its distribution chain.
The group has provided training aimed at identifying challenges and good practices to integrate sustainability into their businesses. They include innovative urban distribution solutions and technologies for the efficient delivery of goods.

Rwanda: Heineken invests 9 mln euros into local production of Heineken beer
|
Setting up installations to produce the new made in Rwanda Heineken beer cost the local brewery 9 mln euros, The New Times reported on December 24.
The made in Rwanda Heineken beer will be exported to regional market, Bralirwa’s Managing Director Victor Madiela said on December 21.
He said that as Rwanda becomes a regional hub for Heineken production, the beer will be exported as from next year.
“We anticipate starting to export the drink to the region (Uganda, Burundi and DRC) next year. To reach this milestone we have made an overall investment of €9 million on equipment to produce the beer,” he said.
Figures show that 2.5 million bottles of Heineken are sold globally every day.
Rwanda becomes the 9th country among African countries that produce Heineken after Ethiopia Nigeria, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia.

USA: North Dakota farmers switching to two-row barley
|
Richard Horsley, North Dakota State University barley breeder, tells the story of a North Dakota farmer who once was asked how much two-row barley he grows. The farmer replied, "As little as possible."
But times have changed. Two-row barley — once unattractive to North Dakota farmers because it's relatively difficult to grow — will account for about 80 percent of barley acres in the state in 2019, with six-row barley the remaining 20 percent, Steven Edwardson, executive administrator of the North Dakota Barley Council, estimated.
In contrast, six-row barley — long dominant in the state — accounted for 80 percent of North Dakota barley acres in 2005 and 65 percent of state acres in 2015, AG Week reported on December 24.
But as Horsley and other participants in the barley sessions at the annual Prairie Grains Conference Dec. 8-9 in Grand Forks emphasized, strong and growing demand for two-row barley is a powerful inducement to make the switch.
If the customer is always right — and area barley growers say they accept that — then two-row barley represents both the present and the future for the area barley industry.

UK: Edrington-Beam Suntory UK slams cost of Brexit stockpiling
|
One of the UK’s biggest distributors of premium spirits has revealed it has had to significantly increase its investment in stock sourced from the European Union in anticipation of a hard Brexit, as its boss hit out at the distraction caused by political wrangling at a crucial time of the year, the Herald Scotland reported on December 24.
Glasgow-based Edrington-Beam Suntory UK, whose portfolio includes The Famous Grouse, The Macallan and Jim Beam, has been ramping up inventories of drinks such as Courvoisier Cognac from France to ensure it will have up to six months of stock in place after the UK’s scheduled departure from the EU on March 29. It is making the investment to ensure supplies to UK bars, supermarkets and restaurants are not interrupted by a no-deal Brexit.
Managing director Mark Riley declined to say how much the distributor, owned equally by Edrington and Beam Suntory, is investing in Brexit stockpiling. However he said the company usually imports the spirits it requires from the EU on a “just in time basis”, suggesting it has hiked its investment in stock significantly.
