HUNTING THIOLS IN HOPS AND BEER
ABSTRACT
One difficulty about the research of fruity and also
nasty thiols in hops and beer is the challengeof analyzing
these compounds. These German Researchers are
developing suitable methods to do so. Thiols occur in
concentrations below most other beer volatiles. These
low concentrations and the reactivity of their sulfhydryl
group make their analysis particularly challenging.
In order to understand their actual contribution to
beer flavor, suitable analytical tools are required. In
addition to a proper analytical performance (sensitivity,
selectivity, robustness, etc.) factors such as analysis
time, manual handling, costs, and solvent consumption
have to meet today's requirements. An equipment
consisting of HS-SPME-GC-MS/MS is necessary for the
analysis of volatile thiols in hops and beer. All assays
involve headspace extraction and derivatization of thiols
(headspace solid phase microextraction with on-fiber
derivatization using pentafluorobenzyl bromide) with
GC separation, as well as mass selective detection using
MRM mode. If you have a lot of spare money, a lot of
spare time, and huge motivation, help us to track down

USA: Number of breweries expected to surpass 8,000 in 2019
|
The number of breweries operating in the United States surpassed 7,000 this year, a new high mark, with about 1,000 more new breweries expected to open in 2019, according to the Brewers Association.
Small and independently owned breweries, or craft breweries, were making about 5 percent more beer at the middle of 2018 than the year before, when they produced 24.9 million barrels (about 772 million gallons) for the entire year, USA Today reported on December 18.
But beer consumption as a whole is expected to, excuse the pun, remain flat.
All U.S. breweries, including major players Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors, produced 196.3 billion barrels in 2017, a decline of 1.2 percent, the association says. That's expected to fall another 1 percent once 2018's amount is tallied.
After years of double-digit sales increases, sales of craft beer continue to grow but at a slower pace. Still, the nation's regional breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs are expected to set another record sales mark in 2018, with about 7 to 8 percent growth, the association's chief economist Bart Watson estimates.

Delta Corporation Limited, Zimbabwe's largest beverage marker, is making frantic efforts to ensure the availability of all its assortment of lager beers in the wake of the prevailing foreign currency shortages to import packaging material, Bulawayo24 News reported on December 16.
In an exclusive interview with Sunday News Business, after the commissioning of a $260 000 upgrade of a road junction that links its Fairbridge Chibuku Super plant with the Harare-Bulawayo Highway, Delta Corporation general manager — Lager Beer Business Dr Munyaradzi Nyandoro said unreliable foreign currency availability for the procurement of glass package was threatening production of its selected beer brands.
"We have one way glass. For some of our brands, which we put on what we call dumpies (disposable bottles), that's a huge import bill. We get that from South Africa. You know your Castle Lite and others, so that's a challenge because you know foreign currency is not easy to come by.

USA: Brewer’s Association removes ‘traditional’ from definition of craft beer
|
The US Brewer’s Association has updated its definition of craft beer, removing the outdated requirement that the majority of beers be “traditional”, allowing brewers to innovate in new areas without sacrificing their ‘craft’ status, The Drinks Business reported on December 19.
Since the launch of the BA’s original craft brewer definition in 2006, the craft brewing industry has more than tripled in size and market share, with 7,000 breweries now operating in the US.
Previously, the organisation’s definition of craft covered those brewers deemed to be “small, independent and traditional”.
Small means that the brewer has an annual production of six million barrels of beer or less.
Independent means that “less than 25% of the craft brewery is owned or controlled by an alcoholic beverage industry member who is not themselves a craft brewer”.
While the “small” and “independent” definitions remain unchanged, “traditional” has been replaced with “brewer”.
Previously, “traditional” related to “a brewer who has either an all malt flagship (the beer which represents the greatest volume among that brewers brands) or has at least 50% of its volume in either all malt beers or in beers which use adjuncts to enhance rather than lighten flavour.”

Turkey: Beer prices up almost fivefold in the last ten years

Beer prices in Turkey rose almost fivefold in the last ten years, according to the data released by Veri Kaynağı (Data Source), a watchdog monitoring socio-economic developments in the country.
The average price of a bottle of beer was 2 Turkish liras in 2009, but it jumped to 10 Turkish liras at the end of 2018.
People who continue to consume alcoholic beverages are concerned with the rising prices, mainly caused by the increasing private consumption taxes in the country, according to Turkish news site T24.
Turkish authorities added an additional 15.5 percent special consumption tax to alcoholic beverages in July. Turkey's stiff alcohol taxes in recent years have led to catapulting prices for beer and the country’s famous anise-flavoured brandy called raki. Some consumers have begun to produce home-made alcoholic beverages due to high taxes.

China: Tsingtao and Yanjing named official beers of the 2022 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games

Tsingtao and Yanjing have been named the official beers of the 2022 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Xinhua reported on December 17.
China's two leading beer companies are the first official partners that Beijing 2022 has signed since it opened invitations for tier-two sponsors in August 2018.
Both Tsingtao and Yanjing were also official beer partners of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The two companies will share marketing rights for Beijing 2022 in a similar arrangement.
Beijing 2022 launched its marketing program in February 2017. The eight official tier-one partners to have been signed are Bank of China, Air China, Yili Group (dairy products), ANTA (sports apparel), China Unicom (telecommunication services), Shougang Group (urban regeneration services), CNPC (oil & gas), and Sinopec Group (oil & gas).
The Beijing 2022 organizing committee is expected to agree deals with more tier-two sponsors over the coming months.

Russia: Barley exports drop 12.7% in July-October 2018
|
According to preliminary information of market participants, Russian exporters shipped abroad 2.2 mln tonnes of barley during the four months in MY 2018/19 (July-October), or 12.7% less than in the same period last year, UkrAgroConsult reported on December 17.
October barley exports totaled 500.9 thousand tonnes (excluding the Customs Union). This is up 4.9% from the previous month but 12.9% less than in October 2017/18.
Compared with a year ago, July-October 2018/19 witnessed a substantial decline in Russian barley supplies to markets such as Saudi Arabia (-8%), Iran (-32%), and Turkey (-54%).
At the same time, higher demand for Russian barley was seen from the European Union, which imported as much as 91.8 thousand tonnes in the reporting period against 30.7 thousand in July-October 2017/18. Shipments to Jordan were boosted as well: the country purchased 279.7 thousand tonnes of barley during these months, or 82% more than in July-October 2017/18 (153.3 thousand tonnes).
