HUNTING THIOLS IN HOPS AND BEER
ABSTRACT
One difficulty about the research of fruity and also
nasty thiols in hops and beer is the challengeof analyzing
these compounds. These German Researchers are
developing suitable methods to do so. Thiols occur in
concentrations below most other beer volatiles. These
low concentrations and the reactivity of their sulfhydryl
group make their analysis particularly challenging.
In order to understand their actual contribution to
beer flavor, suitable analytical tools are required. In
addition to a proper analytical performance (sensitivity,
selectivity, robustness, etc.) factors such as analysis
time, manual handling, costs, and solvent consumption
have to meet today's requirements. An equipment
consisting of HS-SPME-GC-MS/MS is necessary for the
analysis of volatile thiols in hops and beer. All assays
involve headspace extraction and derivatization of thiols
(headspace solid phase microextraction with on-fiber
derivatization using pentafluorobenzyl bromide) with
GC separation, as well as mass selective detection using
MRM mode. If you have a lot of spare money, a lot of

USA & Mexico: Constellation Brands faces challenge to US$1.5 billion brewery in Mexico
|
Constellation Brands will have to keep fighting for a new US$1.5 billion brewery in Mexico, after a petition for a public vote on its construction was accepted for consideration by the Baja California State Senate, The Drinks Business reported on December 21.
The drinks company announced plans for the new brewery in Mexicali, Baja California, back in January 2016, which was hoped to have a brewing capacity of 10 million hectolitres by December 2019.
However this looks to be in jeopardy after a petition to have a public vote on whether locals actually want this brewery gained 18,595 signatures.
The petition is born out of a fear that the brewery will use up too much of the limited water available in the Mexicali valley, 80% of which is designated for agriculture and farming, with only 2% designated for industry.
Constellation Brands has filed a legal challenge with the state electoral authorities against the body’s decision and demand the vote be suspended.

Malaysia: Malaysian brewers contributed 0.3% to GDP in 2016
|
Malaysian brewers chipped in RM3.7 billion or 0.3% to the gross domestic product in 2016, The Edge Markets MY reported on December 19.
In a statement on December 18, the Confederation of Malaysian Brewers Berhad (CMBB) which comprises Heineken Malaysia Bhd and Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd, said there was moderate growth in the local beer industry, despite operating in a challenging environment including high taxes and the prevalence of illicit alcohol among others.
According to international strategic consultancy firm, Steward Redqueen, CMBB has contributed significantly to the nation’s overall economic growth.
In 2016, CMBB contributed a direct input of RM2.1 billion in taxes and salaries while indirectly contributing RM1.6 billion through its supply chain, trade partners, and suppliers.
In other words, every litre of the CMBB beverage that is produced and sold in Malaysia generated RM13 to the local economy and RM10.50 in tax revenue for the government.
CMBB said the beer industry has employed almost 61,000 Malaysians or 0.4% of the nation’s total workforce, which generated close to RM800 million direct and indirect salaries across its value chain.

Rwanda: Skol Brewery grows market share by 20% this year
|
Skol Brewery Rwanda Ltd grew its market share by 20 per cent in 2018 from 5 per cent in 2010, officials have said.
The development was announced on December 18 as the local beer manufacturer unveiled its brand new ‘SKOL Select’ beer on the market.
Ivan Wulffaert, the Skol Brewery General Manager said the growth in market share is largely due to Rwandan customer base development in appetite of the high quality beer and different varieties.
This, they say, resulted into the brewer’s increasing production and distribution to a widening consumer base.
“One of the key indications of Skol Brewery’s growing market share on Rwandan market is that the brewer’s distribution has grown by 30 times in the past seven years. Which shows that Rwandan consumers are really looking for different beers and express high desire to taste different quality products,”
“That is why we have Skol Select on the market because we want to diversify our brands to beer consumers,” said Wulffaert.
Anita Haguma, Skol Brewery Rwanda’s Marketing Director, said “At the beginning, we had a plan to reach our market share of 20 per cent by 2020 but we hit the target sooner.”

Uzbekistan: Craft Brewing Company imports ingredients from Belgium to guarantee quality of its finished products

Uzbekistan’s Craft Brewing Company imports ingredients (malt, hops, yeast) from Belgium and Germany, the Uzbek company told Trend on December 21.
The main supplier of ingredients for the company is the famous Belgian malt house Castle Malting.
“We chose the companies whose plants have been operating for dozens of years, who have improved their technologies over the years, thereby increasing the quality and efficiency of their products. The Belgian malt house Castle Malting, for example, has been operating since 1868 and is one of the oldest family malt houses in the world,” the Uzbek company noted.
Craft Brewing Company emphasized that high-quality ingredients that comply with all basic regulations are a key element for improving beer culture by creating new styles and flavors.
“We have big plans for 2019; we hope to develop a culture of drinking quality beer in the country and we plan to experiment with tastes, flavors, create new beers, improve the quality of our products and, of course, expand the market. South Africa: AB InBev brings Leffe Blonde and Hoegaarden beers to South Africa

The world’s largest brewer, AB InBev, has brought two Belgian beers, Leffe Blonde which is the most popular beer style in the award winning Leffe beer range, and Hoegaarden, which is the most awarded wheat beer in the World Beer Cup history, to South Africa, the Independent Online reported on December 21.
Leffe Blonde is made using the finest natural ingredients and top fermentation brewing techniques.
High End Marketing Director, Vijay Govindsamy, said pronounced ‘Leff’ with a silent e, Leffe Blonde is an authentic blonde abbey which is full bodies and multi layered with hints of vanilla and clove, and a slight bitterness.
“Leffe Blonde has an alcohol content of 6.6%. It pairs well particularly well with red meat, vinegary dishes, ham and cheese. It was best served in the iconic chalice glass, “which allows the essence of this beer to unveil its true elegance”,” said Govindsamy.

Australia: Hop Products Australia announces second trial of hop variety currently known as HPA-016
|
Hop Products Australia has announced the second trial of a new hop variety, currently known as HPA-016, Australian Brews News reported on December 19.
The as-yet-unnamed hop has been described by several brewers as a versatile hop with mandarin and pine characteristics. HPA sales and marketing manager Owen Johnston told Brews News that 016 is the result of the company’s extensive breeding program.
“HPA has an enormous bank of parent genetics,” he explained.
“We screen something like 3,000 new cultivars every year for suitability to progress through trialling.”
Johnston said that 016 will be available in pelletised trial quantities next year.
Head brewer at Tasmania’s Moo Brew Dave Macgill told Brews News that he finds 016 quite different to Galaxy and Enigma and said that it should prove quite versatile.
Having tasted a beer brewed with 016 at the HPA offices in Tasmania just last month, Macgill said that “it’s got some nice fleshy mandarin and citrus characteristics to it”.
“It would sit well in front of the new-world-style beers that have been coming out at the moment.”
Macgill said that he’d be interested in trialling 016 in a new-world-style lager next year.
