USA: Traditional beers facing new challenge from craft lagers
|
Traditional mass US beers face a new challenge from a growing category of craft, premium and light lagers: brands like Michelob Ultra and Corona lead the pack of alternative light lagers and pilsners that have swung back into favor among US consumers, BeverageDaily.com reported on October 9.
The average US beer drinker is all about convenience and affordability, making AB InBev and MillerCoors two of the biggest beer brewers in the world. Bud Light, Coors Light and Miller Lite have decades of history and reputation as the ‘default’ American beers - they are affordable, well-known and readily available.
But with the rise of craft beer in the twenty-first century their leading status has been threatened; and now a new wave of premium, aspirational lagers are adding a new challenge.
According to Jim Watson, senior beverage analyst at Rabobank, there’s room for craft brewers to take some of the mainstream lager beer segment for their own. Bud, Miller and Coors are still plenty visible with global advertising and sponsorships, but the effect is beginning to wane.

Greece: Number of breweries rises to 45 from just 6 in 2009

Like the head on a well-poured lager, Greek microbreweries have seen their numbers rise to around 45 from just six in 2009, and that’s with three of those six having closed since then, ekathimerini.com reported on October 8.
Indeed, a country map of breweries indicates that almost every region in Greece is producing its own beer: from the Siris MicroBrewery of Serres and Northern Greece, which makes the Voreia range, and the Cretan Brewery with its Charma beers to Corfu Beer and the Ikariaki Brewery on the island of Icaria.
So how has such a rapid proliferation of microbreweries come about during the crisis, especially as beer-making isn’t exactly a cheap activity?
“There was demand for special and more specialized products. Consumers wanted it. It is basically the same trend that appeared in the wine sector in Greece, although that was 25-30 years ago. From just a few big wineries we went to having a succession of new wineries,” says Sofoklis Panagiotou, who together with his brother Giorgos started the Septem microbrewery in 2009, turning it into one of the most well-known labels in its category with significant exports traveling as far as Australia.

India: Kerala state government cancels licenses to set up brewery and distillery units in state
|
The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala, in what can be assumed as an attempt to dodge a controversy that could do serious damage to the party, has announced that it is cancelling licenses to set up brewery and distillery units in the state, the News Minute reported on October 8.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in a press conference held in Thiruvananthapuram on October 8 said that the permission to set up the units have been cancelled as “there is no point to go ahead with this project amidst all these controversies”.
The Pinarayi Vijayan government has been facing the heat for its decision to issue licences to various companies to set up distillery and brewery units in three districts of the state - Kannur, Palakkad and Ernakulam. Following this, a series of allegations were raised by the Congress-led Opposition party leader Ramesh Chennithala, accusing the government of flouting norms in issuing licences to three breweries.
Talking to the media on October 8, the CM said that the government has not done anything wrong in giving the permission to set up the brewery units.

Australia: Heineken launches alcohol-free Heineken 0.0 in Australia
|
Heineken has announced the launch of its latest beer to Australia, Heineken 0.0, an alcohol-free lager, B&T reported on October 9.
The brand’s extension into the alcohol-free category seeks to capitalise on shifting consumer demands and reflects a global desire for alcohol-free beer options among those who are looking to moderate their alcohol consumption.
Available nationwide, Heineken 0.0 will be supported in 2019 by a high-impact nationwide campaign with the aim of establishing the brand in the Australian market and driving trial for consumers. To clearly identify it, Heineken’s iconic green label has been turned blue.
The launch seeks to transform ‘non-beer moments’ where consumers crave a beer but don’t necessarily want the alcohol, into beer moments by providing a premium alcohol-free beer option. Following a successful global launch in 2017, Heineken 0.0 is now available in more than 38 countries and Australia was identified as a market for potential growth.
The brand will look to alter pre-conceived notions surrounding the category by surprising consumers with a great tasting alcohol-free beer and educating on the ideal occasions to enjoy the new product. South Africa: Workers strike not affecting operations - Heineken
|
Heineken South Africa said on October 9 workers contracted to a company that provides it with logistics services were on strike at its Sedibeng Brewery but the work stoppage had caused minimal disruptions, the Eyewitness News reported.
The beer and cider maker said the workers, who are employed by Imperial Managed Logistics, are protesting over poor conditions at a shelter provided for bottle sorters stationed at the Sedibeng Brewery. The firm said it had improved the shelter.
The striking workers could not be reached for comment.
Heineken said the strike should be discontinued after a labour court ruled earlier on October 9
in favour of Imperial to interdict the strike, which started at 0400 GMT.
The maker of Windhoek and Miller Genuine Draft added that it will continue to monitor the situation.
Heineken’s R3.5 billion Sedibeng brewery, located in the south of Johannesburg, was launched in 2010.

Australia & China: Australian barley expected to continue to dominate in China’s barley imports
|
Australian barley’s dominant position in the Chinese market is set to continue and Australia’s substantial share of the Chinese wheat market also remains strong, although facing competition from North American suppliers.
That was the message COFCO International Australia chief executive officer, Yebin “Bruce” Li, presented to the Grain Industry Association of Western Australia (GIWA) forum in Perth last week, UkrAgroConsult reported on October 8.
Mr Li said Australian barley currently held a 66 per cent share of the Chinese market, averaging 4 million tonnes from China’s 6.5 mln tonnes total imports, and there was further growth potential in feed (animal protein) imports.
Mr Li said there was an inelastic base in the Chinese wheat market where Australia had a 25pc market share, contributing 1 mln tonnes of China’s 4 mln tonnes wheat imports.
However, the Australian product faced competition from the United States and Canada.
Focussing on the future for Western Australia grain exports to China, Mr Li said Western Australia’s malt barley varieties had a strong reputation with Chinese maltsters.
“There is steady growth in demand for ‘healthy foods’ so Western Australian oats have a strong quality reputation and high consumer recognition,” he said.
