Brewery news USA, CA: Hooby’s Brewing planning to open by the end of October
A Winters family plans to start selling its beer out of a taproom and restaurant on the town’s Main Street next month, the first step in a plan that’ll culminate with a beer garden overlooking Lake Solano, the Sacramento Bee reported on September 27.

Curtis Stocking and his adult children Chad, Melanie, Jackie and Courtney plan to open Hooby’s Brewing by the end of October at 9 E. Main St., Suite J after home-brewing for the last five years. They’ve knocked down walls in what used to be Main Street Cellars to create a 2,400-square foot taproom with a back patio and bocce court.

All beer is being brewed at a converted country store on the corner of Highway 128 and Pleasants Valley Road, where the Stockings own a 5-acre property neighboring Lake Solano. Bought more than 20 years ago from an eccentric old man with the last name Hoobyar, the site was supposed to serve as Hooby’s brewery and primary taproom.

That plan was tweaked when the downtown building became available this summer, though the Stockings still plan to open a second, all-outdoor bar on the farm sometime next year. It will likely have food trucks, in contrast to the paninis and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Knox County Brewing Co. to hold grand opening on October 20
Galesburg’s Knox County Brewing Co. is set to have its grand opening Oct. 20 with live music and a local food truck, the Galesburg Register-Mail reported on September 28.

Matthew and Sarah Hansen will open the newest microbrewery in Galesburg at the Sustainable Business Center, 2900 W. Main St., on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Smokin’ Willies BBQ will be on-site as a food option with live music from New Cats on a stage within the pub.

The Hansens have been reworking the former en season restaurant location into their own with a table and chairs area, more comfortable chairs area and high top tables spread evenly throughout. One area could be cleared off as the stage area for live music, which the Hansens plan to have.

While the business will not operate a kitchen, KCBC plans to offer meat and cheese platters while also working with food trucks in the area. In fact, the Hansens plan to talk with food truck operators at Saturday’s Food Truck and Art Fest in downtown Galesburg.

The Hansens gave thanks to Galesburg City Council and the Sustainable Business Center as they said both were “amazing” to work with.

The couple wants area residents to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Invisible Man Brewing to become Greensburg’s first new brewery in more than 8 years
Greensburg will soon have a craft beer to call its own for the first time in more than eight years. Invisible Man Brewing plans to open a downtown brewery and taproom sometime next spring or summer, the Trib Live reported on September 28.

The brewery is owned by Danny Victor, Stephanie Victor, Sean McLaughlin and brewer Ted Mellors.

The Victors own Hugo’s Taproom on West Pittsburgh Street.

“That’s actually our passion, beer,” Stephanie Victor said. “We wanted to get involved in making our own concoctions, and cool things.”

Invisible Man has a location lined up, but the owners are not ready to say where.

Stephanie Victor said it will be close to the county courthouse on Main Street.

In the meantime, Invisible Man will hold tastings leading up to the opening.

The brewery announced its existence with its first tasting on Sunday, September 23 at a “Home Brew and Chill” event at All Saints Brewing Company in Hempfield, part of Greensburg Craft Beer Week. It debuted its “Dark Side of the Moon” blackberry wit, “Science for Saison” and “Saturday Morning Cartoons” peanut butter milk stout.

There has not been a brewery in the city of Greensburg since Red Star Brewery at the Greensburg Train Station closed in 2010.

Brewery news USA, NC: Lower Left Brewing Company coming to Charlotte early next year
A new brewery named Lower Left Brewing Company will open in early 2019 in Charlotte.

Lower Left Brewing Company’s exact address is 4528 Nations Crossing Road — within walking distance of Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, Sugar Creek Brewing and Brewers at 4001 Yancey, The Charlotte Agenda reported on September 28.

Managing partner Tim Curtis and head brewer/partner Alex Shoenthal recently signed the lease and construction will start within the next few months.

Tim and Alex intend on repurposing the old mechanics garage currently on the property and maintaining its character. The brewhouse will be 1,200 square feet and the taproom will be about 900 square feet.

Expect front and rear outdoor seating, lawn games, live music and a dedicated kids area.

The brewery will not have food, but there will be prepackaged snacks for sale, popcorn and a rotating food truck lineup.

In terms of beer, Lower Left Brewing Co. will have 4-6 core beers available year round including a New England IPA, tropical IPA, American pale ale, blonde ale, amber ale and a porter or stout. Alex is an award-winning professional home brewer who has been brewing for the past 12 years. Alex and Tim consider themselves hop heads, so get ready for a focus on all ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Heineken’s Lagunitas Brewing announces job cuts
Lagunitas Brewing, one of the flag bearers of the US craft beer industry, is laying off 12% of its staff as the U.S. craft beer sector continues to soften, The Fortune reported on October 3.

The company, which was acquired by Heineken 17 months ago, says the action will affect all departments and all locations, including its Petaluma, California headquarters, Chicago production plant, and Seattle Taproon. (The majority of the layoffs, more than 100, will take place in Petaluma.)

“The craft beer market is rapidly evolving and, in many ways, more challenging. More breweries, more choices … very much like the late ‘90s when the craft beer segment had similar pressure,” CEO Maria Stipp told Santa Rosa’s Press Democrat.

The layoffs come just two months after Stipp announced Lagunitas was just one of five U.S. craft beer brands gaining dollar share this year. (Lagunitas, technically, is no longer considered a craft brewer by the Brewer’s Association because of its macro brewery owners.) She noted that, as of July 14, Lagunitas ranked fourth in dollar share (up 4%) and sixth in volume (up 5%) in the industry.

The company, founded by Tony Magee in 1993 and best known for its hoppy IPAs and full-flavored other ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Various Artists Brewing Co. planned in Nashville by two local entrepreneurs
Two Nashville entrepreneurs plan to open a brewery on Elm Hill Pike not far from Fesslers Lane, the Nashville Post reports. The brewery and pub will offer a menu featuring Argentine-style grilled meats.

Pat Isbey and Jeff Bergman will co-own and operate Various Artists Brewing Co., to be located at 1011 Elm Hill Pike in a building that Bergman owns. Longtime followers of Nashville's restaurant scene may recall Isbey from the excellent barbecue spot Jimmy Carl's Lunch Box, which he owned and operated from 2009 to 2010 in the Station Inn building in the Gulch. Isbey and Bergman are targeting a late-December opening for Various Artists Brewing.

Their effort to launch the brewery comes after they scrapped plans for a beer-focused pub in East Nashville’s fast-changing McFerrin Park district. That business would have been located in the Morris Jacobs Building on Wilburn Street.

Now Isbey and Bergman say they have found a location perfectly suited for their concept. The room will seat up to 27 patrons inside; the building also has a large deck and a secluded patio.

The Various Artists Brewing menu is still being finalized, Isbey tells the Post. “I’m into Argentinian-style cooking,” he says, adding that the Various Artists food offerings ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, DE: Two Delaware breweries close their doors
Two Delaware breweries closed their doors in recent months, including 16 Mile Brewing in Georgetown, marking the first closure of an in-state production brewery in two decades, The News Journal reported on September 28.

The 16 Mile shutdown was announced with a sign on the brewery's door on Monday, Sept. 24:

"We appreciated your business and are sorry to inform you that we have decided to close 16 Mile Brewery and Tavern indefinitely. Thank you for your patronage and support over the last nine years."

The reason for the closure is unknown. Owner Brett McCrea did not return phone calls and has not made any public announcements.

In addition to the loss of 16 Mile, the in-house brewery at Pizza By Elizabeths in Greenville, Frozen Toes, stopped production over the summer.

The reason for that move is not as mysterious.

"Everything was good with the beer, but I was starting to spread myself too thin," says Paul Egnor, who ran brewing operations while also serving as executive chef at the pizza restaurant.

Delaware's only beer fest run by the state's brewers moves to a new location this weekend

“The restaurant and my family took precedence over the beer,” says Egnor, adding that he and his wife had three ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Craft beer drinkers eager to try new brews
Australian craft beer consumers now purchase an equal number of previously untried beers as old favourites, according to the 2018 Australian Craft Beer Survey, showing how quickly the sector has evolved. And consumers’ continuous thirst for something new has implications across the craft beer industry: from the diversity of styles to the preferred packaging sizes, the Beverage Daily reported on October 1. “On average, five out of every ten beers purchased by consumers are for previously untried beers,” reveals the survey, which is the largest publicly available style of Australian craft drinking trends.

“This is quite staggering and speaks volumes as to why many breweries have an extensive seasonal and limited release program. Considering the Australian beer landscape prior to 2012 with little access to beers outside of mainstream lines, it is amazing how quickly consumer habits have evolved.”

More than 18,000 craft beer drinkers took part in the survey which is run every year by online beer supermarket Beer Cartel.

“Craft beer is the only segment of the Australian beer market which is in continuous growth, with overall consumption of beer and alcohol in decline. The data that follows provides an extremely accurate picture ...More info on site

Hops news Japan: Major brewers offering financial and technological support to boost domestic hops production
Major Japanese brewers are offering financial and technological support to domestic hop farmers so they can increase production of hops, a primary beer ingredient that determines flavor and bitterness, The Japan News reported on September 29.

With imported hops accounting for about 90 percent of hops used in beer production in Japan, the brewers aim to make greater use of domestically grown fresh hops that can be used for their products soon after harvesting.

Workers were cutting hop plants off from 5-meter-tall trellises in late August at a farm in Tono in Iwate Prefecture, the country’s leading hop-producing prefecture.

At a processing facility, hop flowers are separated from vines and dried. They are then shipped to beer makers.

According to data from Japan’s agriculture ministry, annual domestic production of hops topped 2,000 tons in the 1970s. But the amount has plunged to some 270 tons, chiefly due to a drop in the number of hop farmers stemming from hard work and a lack of successors.

Against this background, major brewer Kirin Co. and Norinchukin Bank, the central financial institution for agricultural, forestry and fishery cooperatives across the country, announced in August investment totaling ¥250 million in Beer Experience, a hop producer based in Tono.

Kirin aims ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Lion to consider job redundancies at two of its nine breweries
Following Lion’s announcement on October 3 that it will consider job redundancies and shift reductions at two of its nine breweries, it is clear that the decline in mainstream beer consumption is hitting big business hard, the Australian Brews News reported.

The decision has come after “a range of cost pressures” that Lion has claimed are threatening the company’s ability to remain competitive.

Lion said that “a reduction in volume” within its brewery network and the “continued decline in the mainstream beer market” are the main reasons behind the restructure.

Lion’s proposed changes will affect employees at both its Milton production brewery in Queensland and West End Brewery in South Australia. The current proposal will reduce the number of shifts at both breweries, resulting in 36 full-time roles being made redundant at West End and 25 at Milton.

Lion said that while “the XXXX trademark and XXXX Gold in particular, have outperformed the classic mainstream beer category for each of the last five years both nationally and in Queensland… with people continuing to increase the number of different beers in their repertoire, the classic category as a whole has been under pressure”.

“Likewise, West End remains South Australia’s most popular beer, and will continue to ...More info on site
