Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands posts upbeat Q2 sales and raises full-year outlook
Constellation Brands, the beer maker betting on the marijuana market, raised on October 4 its full-year earnings outlook and posted upbeat second quarter sales driven by strong demand for its Modelo and Corona brews, the Financial Times reported.

The company raised its outlook for adjusted fiscal 2019 earnings to a range of $9.60 to $9.75 a share, up from $9.40 to $9.70 previously. This excludes benefits from its additional $4 bln investment in Canadian marijuana company Canopy Growth in August.

The rosy outlook accompanied upbeat quarterly sales, which jumped 10.1 per cent from a year ago to $2.3 bln. That topped analyst expectations for $2.25 bln, according to a Thomson Reuters survey of analysts.

Beer sales grew 10.5 per cent from a year ago — with the company noting that its business was the biggest share gainer in the US beer industry — while wine sales were up 9.3 per cent.

Net income more than doubled to $1.15 bln, or $5.41 a share, in the three months ended in August, up from $501.6 mln, or $2.30 a share, in the quarter last year. Adjusting for one-time items, earnings of $2.87 a share topped expectations for $2.59 a share.

Barley news Canada: Early winter may leave remaining 20% of barley crop unharvested
In Canada there is still about 20% of barley on the field, and with the early winter in many Canadian regions these 20% might stay on the fields until next spring time, GrainCom reported on October 5.

About 800,000 tonnes of barley have been sold to China, and it might be difficult to see additional Canadian sales, the analysts said.

Brewery news USA, CA: Creative Creature Brewing to launch in El Cajon on October 5
It’s been nearly three years since URBN Restaurant Group shuttered the brewing component of its El Cajon brewpub, westcoastersd.com reported on October 3.

The coal-fired, pizza-centric restaurant and bar is still in operation, but the brewery component now belongs to homebrewing entrepreneurs making the jump to the big leagues of beer. Their vehicle for that ascent is called Creative Creature Brewing, and it will soft-open to the public this Friday, October 5.

Small in size by comparison to many local breweries at just 933 square feet, Creative Creature aims to live up to the first half of its name. Its early portfolio of beers features numerous India pale ales, but aside from that, is unlike most in the county.

“We are extremely small and have only three employees,” says co-founder Derek Carnation. “We all do everything from brewing to bartending. Our goal is to make beer that is uniquely different, adapting to new and old styles and constantly discovering new grain combos.”

Carnation and company also constructed all of the tables and seating inside and on Creative Creature’s outdoor patio. They are working with a four-barrel system (a three-barrel upgrade from the single-barrel homebrew rig they graduated from) and have prepared the following ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Bookhouse Brewing to open its doors on October 6
You can add a few pages to Cleveland brewing history when Bookhouse Brewing marks its grand opening Saturday, Oct. 6, Cleveland.com reported.

That's because Vaughn Stewart and Luke Brevoort are brewing in a 19th century building that used to house Jacob Baehr Brewery on West 25th Street in Ohio City. Stewart and Brevoort have crafted a brewhouse with modern and older design touches, from sleek hardwood floors to black and white tiles and preserved wallpaper. And in keeping with the pages of history, customers will enter and head up a slight slope between walls lined with scores of books.

Through the Western Reserve Historical Society, the owners even found portraits of Jacob and Magdalena Baehr, their framed stoic images on either side of the wall behind the taps. The Baehrs lived above the brewery, and Jacob's death left Magdalena to head the brewing operations while raising eight kids.

"Every time we think we're having a rough day, we think about what she did," Brevoort said.

The respect Stewart and Brevoort have for the history of their space is seen with the many reclaimed pieces in the brewery.

Chairs salvaged from a Russian Orthodox church are believed to have also been used in the Rockefeller Building, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Roak Brewing Co. to acquire Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City
In what may be the first deal of its kind for two Michigan craft breweries, Royal Oak-based Roak Brewing Co. plans to acquire Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City within the next few months, the Detroit Free Press reported on October 3.

The breweries' separate brands are to remain intact, no layoffs are planned, and each expects to offer beers from the other at its taproom. There will also be a "cross-pollination" of beers produced in either brewery, and Right Brain beers are likely to be distributed out-of-state for the first time in places where Roak is available, said Roak co-owner and CEO John Leone.

"It is opportunity for both of us to be stronger!" Right Brain owner and founder Russell Springsteen said in a text message.

Pending the deal's approval, Springsteen will have a stake in the ownership that will also be split among Leone and about two other Roak owners, Leone said. He declined to say how much percentage each will own. The deal is expected to be finalized in about 60-90 days.

"The way I see it is, I'm putting together a militia to take on the imperial nation," Leone said. "We all know what's going on: The ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & USA: Japanese craft brewers launch US marketing campaign
An industry association of 22 Japanese craft beer makers has launched a US marketing campaign as it aims to showcase the “authenticity, richness and unique flavour profile” of its craft beer offer, FoodBev reported on October 4.

The ‘Drink in a New Language’ initiative is being carried out by association Japanese Craft Beer and JFOODO (Japan Food Product Overseas Promotion Center) to target both industry professionals and consumers across the West Coast.

Over the course of the next year, the group hopes to introduce new beer to the market through continuous trade marketing relations, consumer events, PR and social media.

A recent study by JFOODO among 447 craft beer consumers in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles found that 80% of respondents would want to try craft beer from Japan. The country’s beer offering is said to be positioned to answer a demand for low-malt beer in the US.

“Japanese craft beer boasts unique attributes that are sure to appeal to American consumers,” said Hiroki Oizumi, JFOODO director general.

“Beer lovers will discover quality brews of great character that are handcrafted with extreme attention to detail and unique ingredients from all corners of Japan such as yuzu, sansho (Japanese pepper) or matcha.”
