ABSTRACT
This was basically a summary of trials done by a
German research team. They used the hop variety
Comet in dry hopping three different beer batch sizes:
17L (keg), 8 hl, and 140 hl (CCTs) at an addition rate
of 1,47 ml hop oil/hl or 100g of hops/hl. Temporary
circulation was used for a homogenized yield of aroma
transfer. Analytical methods and tasting impressions
showed significant differences in various descriptors.
The small scale trial showed more fruitiness than the
others. The mass-transfer rates of the hop aromatic
oils to the beer clearly depend on the scale of the
trials. In particular, the mass-transfer rates of myrcene
and linalool differ between the scales. Correlations
of analytical results with the tasting results showed
that the tasters were able to detect the measured
differences in the mass-transfer rates of volatile hop
compounds. Therefore, brewers cannot necessarily expect
to achieve similar aroma impressions when scaling up
laboratory- scale trials to industrial-scale trials.

Zambia: Finance Minister tours Zambian Breweries’ malting plant ahead of its formal opening
|
Zambia’s Finance Minister Hon. Felix Mutati toured the Zambian Breweries’ new state-of-the-art maltings plant in the Lusaka South Multi Facility Economic Zone (LS-MFEZ) this week to familiarise himself with the operations ahead of its formal opening by H.E. President Edgar Chagwa Lungu later this month, the Lusaka Times reported on March 28.
The new US$33 million plant is part of the group’s long-term investment plan in Zambia and is set to boost purchases of barley from local farmers as a key ingredient in the company’s popular Mosi, Castle and Castle Lite lagers.
“Zambian Breweries is a perfect example of the public-private partnership (PPP) and a role model of industrialisation, value addition and import substitution,” said Mr Mutati.
He said the company could make more money through the export of the surplus barley, especially that it was currently sourcing its ingredients through local farmers, which had in turn empowered those suppliers.
During a presentation by Zambian Breweries, Mr Mutati noted the need for industrialisation within the MFEZ. He was also happy that Zambian Breweries was contributing to employment creation and the company’s support to small-scale farmers that were growing the ingredients for its beer production.

Japan: Asahi to take on EUR7.4 bln in bank loans to finance purchase of AB InBev’s European assets
|
Japanese beer maker Asahi Group Holdings Ltd said on March 29 it will take on 7.4 billion euros (6.36 billion pounds) in bank loans to finance its acquisition of European assets from Anheuser-Busch InBev SAC NV.
The brewer, known for Japan's best-selling "Super Dry" beer, in December agreed to buy a group of eastern European beer brands, including Pilsner Urquell, from AB InBev for 7.3 billion euros.
In a statement, Asahi said it will take on short-term loans from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp and Mizuho Bank Ltd.
Companies typically borrow on a short-term basis as bridging loans before securing permanent financing through, for instance, syndicated loans or bonds.
An Asahi spokesman said nothing has been decided about permanent financing.

USA: The Brewers Association reports craft beer industry results for 2016
|
|
The Brewers Association (BA) — the trade association representing small and independent American craft brewers — on March 28 released 2016 data on U.S. craft brewing growth. With over 5,300 breweries operating during the year, small and independent craft brewers represent 12.3 percent market share by volume of the overall beer industry.
In 2016, craft brewers produced 24.6 million barrels, and saw a 6 percent rise in volume on a comparable base and a 10 percent increase in retail dollar value. Retail dollar value was estimated at $23.5 billion, representing 21.9 percent market share. By adding 1.4 million barrels, craft brewer growth outpaced the 1.2 million barrels lost from the craft segment, based on purchases by large brewing companies. Microbreweries and brewpubs delivered 90 percent of the craft brewer growth.
“Small and independent brewers are operating in a new brewing reality still filled with opportunity, but within a much more competitive landscape,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “As the overall beer market remains static and the large global brewers lose volume, their strategy has been to focus on acquiring craft brewers. World: AB InBev to get its electricity from 100% renewable energy sources by 2025
|
AB InBev, the world's largest beer maker, said it wants to get its electricity from 100 percent renewable energy sources by 2025.
In a news release, AB InBev said it will become the "largest corporate direct purchaser of renewable electricity in the global consumer goods sector." The move will reduce the company's carbon footprint by 30 percent.
The beer giant said the renewable energy transition will begin in Mexico and plans to enter into agreements in other markets in the future. AB InBev said it will use solar and wind energy sources.
“Cutting back on fossil fuels is good for the environment and good for business, and we are committed to helping drive positive change. We have the opportunity to play a leading role in the battle against climate change by purchasing energy in a more sustainable way," said AB InBev CEO Carlos Brito.

India: Carlsberg signs contract manufacturing deal to establish footprint in Arunachal Pradesh
|
Carlsberg India, the number three player in the Indian beer market, recently announced a contract manufacturing association with NEFA Breweries, the first brewery in Arunachal Pradesh, thereby establishing the company’s local footprint in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, The Arunachal Times reported on March 27.
With this association, Carlsberg India aims to further strengthen its presence in the North-Eastern region.
NEFA’s state-of-the-art brewery is set up in Naharlagun having an annual production capacity of 300KHL. The new brewery will manufacture Carlsberg India’s product portfolio.
Speaking on the new development, Michael N Jensen, Managing Director, Carlsberg India said, “We are pleased to announce our association with NEFA Breweries and establish local footprint in Arunachal Pradesh. This association will not only help us augment our capacity in the region, but will also help us strengthen our presence in the North-East market. The business association is aimed at ensuring that our quality brand portfolio is available to our consumers.”

Nigeria: New details reported as to why Diageo failed in its bid to increase share capital in Guinness Nigeria Plc
|
There are fresh indications as to why Diageo Plc, the parent company of Guinness Nigeria Plc, failed in its bid to increase its share capital in the brewery giant, the Nation Newspaper reported on March 24.
It may be recalled that Diageo had in mid-September 2015 announced its intention to make an offer through its wholly owned subsidiary, Guinness Overseas Limited for up to 15.7% of the share capital of Guinness Nigeria Plc.
The Nation gathered that everything seem okay as the different parties worked out the finer details of the deal.
However, trouble began to brew when some local shareholders vowed to resist any move to sell more shares to the parent company under any guise.
Convinced about what it considered the impropriety of the proposed deal, the shareholders set machinery in motion to thwart the plan thus leading to a stalemate.
Not happy with the turn of event in spite of making several entreaties to pacify the aggrieved shareholders, Diageo naturally soft-pedalled and it subsequently communicated its decision not to go any further with the potential offer to Guinness Nigeria Plc.

Slovenia: Heineken starts bottling its flagship beer at its Laško brewery
|
Less than two years after it was acquired by Dutch brewer Heineken, the brewery in Laško has started bottling its owner's flagship beer. The next step will be making the brew in Laško, The Slovenia Times reported on March 28.
The bottling of Heineken beer in Laško was launched on March 27. The beer will be sold in the former Yugoslavia, north Italy and Hungary.
Dušan Zorko, the director of Pivovarna Laško Union, told the Večer newspaper that this gave Laško the status of strategic brewery in the Heineken group while filling spare capacity.
Last week the bottling of Heineken cider commenced in the company's second location in Ljubljana.
Pivovarna Laško Union last year produced roughly 2.2 million hectolitres of beer. It expects to increase production by several hundred thousand hectolitres on account of bottling Heineken.
While the company has reduced its workforce by nearly a quarter since the acquisition, to about 650, it could hire additional staff if other Heineken brands are bottled in Slovenia as well, according to Zorko.

Romania & Hungary: Heineken settles row with small Romanian brewer out of court
|
A row between Heineken and a small Romanian brewer backed by the Hungarian government looked to be over on March 27, just days after Budapest threatened to ban the Dutch giant's famous red star logo, Bizcommunity.com reported.
Heineken and Lixid Project, based in Transylvania, a region in Romania with a large ethnic Hungarian population, said in a joint statement that their dispute had been settled out of court. "Both companies now look forward to (focusing) on what they do best and enjoy most: brewing beer," said the statement seen by AFP.
The deal appears to have ended a bitter dispute framed by the Hungarian government as a "David and Goliath" battle against a multinational firm "abusing its power" over a small company run by ethnic Hungarians.
The dispute escalated after the Dutch firm's Romanian subsidiary won a brand-name dispute against Lixid Project in January. A court ruled that their Hungarian-language "Csiki" beer was too similar to Heineken's Romanian-language "Ciuc" range and infringed trademark rights.
Budapest slammed the decision as "undignified, unjust and anti-Hungarian" and supported calls to boycott Heineken products. Then draft legislation brought to parliament by senior government officials this month proposed a ban on the commercial use of "symbols of totalitarian dictatorships"

South Africa: Heineken South Africa signs a deal with local craft brewer Stellenbrau
|
Heineken South Africa has signed a deal with Stellenbosch-based brewery, Stellenbrau, making it part of the global brewing concern, Bizcommunity.com reported on March 29.
For the past five years, Deon Engelbrecht and his team have built the Stellenbrau brand, which has four signature beers: an international award-winning Craven Craft Lager, Jonker’s Weiss, Alumni Ale and Governor’s Red Rooibos Lager. Heineken International, which is the second largest brewer in the world and owns Amstel and a share in Windhoek South Africa, operates largely in the premium and super-premium segment of both the local and international market.
According to Heineken South Africa’s MD, Ruud van den Eijnden, “Stellenbrau was a natural fit, as it is what Heineken was 150 years ago, sharing the same essential values - a love of and pride in producing great beer and an entrepreneurial spirit. We are excited to welcome the entire team to the Heineken family.”

India: AB InBev training Indian farmers to boost barley output
|
World’s biggest beer brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev is training Indian farmers to boost barley output as part of its endeavour to increase local procurement and reduce imports, The Financial Express reported on March 27.
Presently, the company’s Indian subsidiary requires about 50,000 tonnes of barley annually, of which 35,000 tonnes is procured locally and the rest imported. Under its SmartBarley global program, the company with France’s biggest grain cooperative Axereal is undertaking joint research on high yielding variety of barley for the last five years at Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.
The company has conducted field trial of high yield imported varieties and was showcased to farmers at ‘Kisan Kaushal Sangoshti’ held on March 27 at Farukh Nagar, Haryana. “India is a very important market for us. We will continue to reach out to them through the Sangoshti and our SmartBarley program to help create sustainable livelihood and the best possible barley for our business,” AB InBev India President Pedro Aidar said in a statement.
The purpose of the Smart Barley program is to ensure farmers are able to increase productivity “resulting in local sourcing, reducing our reliance on imports,” the company’s Corporate Affairs Director Devashish Dasgupta said.
