HOW MUCH OF MY HOP AROMA GOES INTO THE LINER?

ABSTRACT
This question was addressed by a German research group. They compared different crown liner material with highly hopped beer packaged in bottles. For all measured hop components, the first 20 days showed a high absorption curve of these aroma components in the different liner materials. There was little difference observed between those liner materials but it was shown that the hydrocarbon components are especially susceptible to quick sorption while terpenoids showed minor migration tendency. Drink your beer before the liners get all the delicious hop flavours!

Brewery news Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria Plc reports 6% revenue increase for Q1 of its financial year to September 2017
Guinness Nigeria Plc on October 28 announced a revenue increase of 6 per cent for the first quarter (July-September) of its financial year, The Eagle Online reported.

The company said the increase was driven in part by contributions from its new mainstream and international premium spirits business as well as the continuing growth of its value brands.

The financial statements released to the Nigerian Stock Exchange also showed that the company had a Loss After Tax position of N2.2 billion in the period.

Peter Ndegwa, the Managing Director/CEO of Guinness Nigeria, said the revenue growth was in spite of continuing challenges in the operating environment.

Ndegwa said: “The environment remains tough but we have seen contributions from our mainstream and international premium spirits brands as well as continuing growth of Satzenbrau. These were the key drivers of the 6% revenue growth recorded for the quarter. Our cost of sales was impacted by the high inflationary environment and continuing currency devaluation leading to a reduction in operating profit. The higher finance cost in the quarter is due to the impact of unrealized foreign exchange losses as a result of the currency devaluation.

“Going forward, innovation will continue to be a big part of our strategy us ...More info on site

Brewery news Poland: Polish beer exports up 19.8% in 2015
Polish beer exports totaled EUR170.6 mln in 2015 achieving 19.8% increase versus 2014, Radio Poland reported on October 31.

According to the Union of Brewing Industry Employers in Poland director Danuta Gut, the increase can be explained, among other factors, by growing groups of Polish immigrants in the US and Canada.

The Netherlands are the No.1 importer of Polish beer followed by Germany and the UK.

Brewery news Portugal: Budejovicky Budvar wins another battle for Budweiser brand in Portugal
Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar says a Portuguese court has upheld a previous ruling prohibiting rival, Anheuser-Busch InBev, from selling beer under the Budweiser name in Portugal, Minneapolis Star Tribune reported on October 31.

State-owned Budvar has been fighting with Anheuser-Busch for over a century over use of the Budweiser brand name. The legal battle continued when Anheuser-Busch was taken over by Belgium's InBev in 2008 to create the world's largest brewer.

In a statement on October 31, the company said the court in Lisbon — Tribunal da Propriedade Intelectual — rejected AB InBev's challenge to an earlier 2014 ruling.

Budvar says the verdict is effective, and that another legal complaint filed by AB InBev, cannot delay it.

AB InBev's didn't immediately comment but has previously said sales of its beer under the BUD brand in Portugal have held up.

Brewery news Portugal: Government plans 3% beer excises hike
Portugal’s government has announced its draft 2017 Budget which sets out plans to introduce a 3% increase in taxes for beer, spirits and liqueur wines, ESM reported on October 21.

The tax on the beers currently oscillates between €7.98 (0.5%-1.2% alcohol volume) and €28.06 (over 1.2% alcohol volume) per hectolitre.

From next year, it will range from €8.22 and €28.90.

Spirits will be taxed €1367.78/hectolitre (currently €1327.94), while the tax on liqueur wines will rise to €75.05/hectolitre (previously €72.86).

The Portuguese Association of Beer Producers (APCV) has expressed ‘deep disappointment’ with the new tax hike, arguing that the industry should be protected, as is the case with wine, which enjoys a zero taxation policy.

The draft budget also introduces a so-called ‘fat tax’, imposed on beverages with sugar and sweeteners, but excluding those made of milk, juices and fruit nectars.

The new tax rates will enter into force on 1 January 2017.

Barley news Ethiopia: New malting barley promises to revolutionize Ethiopia’s barley sector
A new high-yielding, pest-resistant variety of malting barley has the potential to revolutionize Ethiopia’s barley sector, helping to meet growing domestic demand, boost export earnings, and substantially raise farmer incomes, ReliefWeb reported on October 31.

Barley is a major crop across the Highlands of Ethiopia, where it is grown by approximately 4.1 million smallholder farmers on close to one million hectares (ha). The country is one of the major producers of barley in Sub-Saharan Africa, and has a growing malt beverage sector.

Yet, despite a favorable bio-physical environment, conventional varieties tend to be low-yielding - achieving yields of only 2 tons per hectare (t/ha) - and susceptible to pests and disease. This means that production can only meet 35 percent of domestic demand. Last year, Ethiopia was forced to import over 63,000 tonnes of malt, at a cost of 38 million USD.

The new release – Singitan – is resistant to shoot fly, a major pest in Ethiopia which can cause yield losses of up to 100 percent during shorter rainy seasons. It is also higher-yielding than local varieties – generating up to 4.1 t/ha - and demonstrates good malting qualities.
