HOW MUCH OF MY HOP AROMA GOES INTO THE LINER?

ABSTRACT
This question was addressed by a German research group. They compared different crown liner material with highly hopped beer packaged in bottles. For all measured hop components, the first 20 days showed a high absorption curve of these aroma components in the different liner materials. There was little difference observed between those liner materials but it was shown that the hydrocarbon components are especially susceptible to quick sorption while terpenoids showed minor migration tendency. Drink your beer before the liners get all the delicious hop flavours!

Brewery news USA, TX: St. Elmo Brewing Co. to hold grand opening party on December 3
St. Elmo Brewing Co., South Austin’s newest brewery, celebrates its grand opening party on Saturday Dec. 3, 2016 starting at 11:00 am. The brewery is located at 440 E. St. Elmo Rd. Ste. G2, Austin, TX 78745 in SouthAustin’s much-anticipated creative district, The Yard, Brewbound.com reported.

No stranger to Austin’s beer community, St. Elmo Brewing Co. (St. Elmo) Founders,Bryan Winslow and Tim Bullock, began their career at Austin Beerworks in 2012. As Lead Brewer and Bar Manager, Winslow and Bullock helped Austin Beerworks win notoriety, including: gold medal at the 2013 Great AmericanBeer Festival (GABF) for Black Thunder schwarzbier, bronze medal at the 2014 World Beer Cup for Black Thunder and silver medal at the 2014 GABF for the Fire Eagle IPA as well as Austin BeerGuide’s Best Brewery Tour/Tasting Room in 2014.

“I had, not-so-secretly, been planning my own brewery since I started at Austin Beerworks. I decided from day one to learn every single aspect about how beer is made,” said Winslow. “It wasn’t until about 2013 that I started to get an idea about what I wanted to do in Austin. The St. Elmo neighborhood was the goal from the beginning. It is so unique and ripe with ...More info on site

Barley news Canada, AB: Barley quality this year confirmed as better than the 2015 crop
Alberta beers won’t be in short supply this year, despite recent reports that late-season moisture had seriously harmed the province’s malt barley crop, Alberta Express reported on October 25.

“The barley quality in 2016 is better than the 2015 crop, hands down,” said Kevin Sich, grain department manager at Rahr Malting near Alix.

“If I needed a lot of wheat to make flour, I might be a little more concerned. If I was a canola-crushing plant that’s still seeing (so much) canola in the field, I’d be a little more concerned. But as a maltster with all the barley in, I don’t really see it as an issue.

“It’s been a decent, high-volume crop.”

Most farmers took their malt barley off first and managed to avoid the worst harvest weather, including the snowfall that hit many parts of the province in early October, said Sich.

“Farmers focused on malt barley. We told farmers, ‘You’ve got some fairly lucrative pricing on your malt barley, and if you lose it to feed, you’re probably looking at losing C$3 a bushel — anywhere from $250 to C$300 an acre,’” he said.

“Most farmers identified that as their highest-risk crop. They knew that if they could get it off in ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Crooked Mile Brewing to open its doors in Almonte on October 29
Crooked Mile Brewing has announced on its Facebook page that it will be opening to the public for the first time this coming weekend, Canadian Beer News reported on October 24.

Located at 453 Ottawa St. in Almonte, a small town 40 km southwest of Ottawa, Crooked Mile has been founded by Nick Pruiksma, his wife Vicki, and partner Dylan Bouleau.

In an earlier thread on Facebook, the brewery’s brand line-up was described as follows:

“Our main three brews will be an English IPA, our Welsh Bitter (not a real style, we know, but we didn’t want the Welsh to feel left out), and a Scottish Ale. The IPA is our hoppy beer, the Scottish Ale is our malty beer, and the Welsh Bitter is in between. We will also be doing plenty of seasonal beers to express our creativity, such as a wonderful harvest ale (with ingredients that may surprise you), and a triple chocolate potato stout!”

Crooked Mile will be open on Saturday October 29th from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Sunday October 30th from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM, selling pints and flights to enjoy on-site, and 1 litre and 1.89 litre growlers to go.

Brewery news USA, VA: Green Flash Brewing Co. to open its East Coast Brewery on November 13
San Diego-based Green Flash Brewing Co. said it plans to open its East Coast brewery and tasting room in Virginia Beach noon to 8 p.m. Nov. 13, Daily Press reported on October 24.

The event at 1209 Craft Lane will feature a commemorative cask tapping and a fly-over by a retired military plane, according to a news release. Visitors can sample the beer and educational programming.

The day will also feature live music and food from local vendors. The event is free and open to the public.

Brewery news USA, KY: Holsopple Brewing aiming at early 2017 opening
If brewing beer is part art and part science, Sam and Kristy Gambill certainly will have the science part down when they open their new business, Holsopple Brewing, in early 2017, Insider Louisville reported on October 25.

Kristy is a microbiologist, while Sam studied genetics and later studied fiber content in beer at the University of California-Davis.

“There’s fiber in all beer,” Sam notes. “But more so in craft beer.”

“It’s a health food,” Kristy deadpans.

The couple, who moved to Louisville five years ago from Oregon, have long worked in the spirits industry. Kristy, whose maiden name is Holsopple, currently works at Brown-Forman and previously worked at Full Sail Brewery in Hood River, Ore. Sam has worked in the brewing business for Miller in the past.

Now they’ll work toward bringing craft beer to the Lyndon neighborhood via their small brewing operation tucked away in a strip center just off Lyndon Lane at 8023 Catherine Lane. The 1,200-square-foot space is evenly divided between brewhouse and taproom, both of which are under construction.

The taproom will feature plenty of reclaimed wood and steel, and will seat about 36 people. There will be eight tap lines, which at first will be a blend of house beers and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: Big Beach Brewing Co. joins Alabama craft brewing scene
The craft and boutique beer boom sweeping the nation shows no signs of slowing down, and now Gulf Shores, Ala. has been added to the growing list of microbreweries in Alabama with the opening of Big Beach Brewing Co., AL.com reported on October 25.

Big Beach Brewery is the second one to tap the Baldwin County market, behind Fairhope Brewing Co. The Eastern Shore brewery has been popular with bars at the beach after opening in early 2013 and is currently the only active brewery in Lower Alabama. Serda Brewing Co. is still working on opening in Mobile at the time of this writing but they are moving forward.

For Big Beach, it all began in July of 2015 when dentist Dr. Jim Shamburger stood before City Council with a new name and new location for the business. Shamburger and his wife, Julie, asked the city for a conditional use permit to open Big Beach Brewery on the corner of East 2nd Street and East 24th Avenue, across from Tacky Jack's in the Waterway Village District.

Fast forward to Oct. 2016 and the Shamburgers' dream has come true with construction completed in late September. The name of the brewery ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: SwitchGear Brewing set to open next year in Elkhart Lake
A new brewery is set to open next year in Elkhart Lake, The Sheboygan Press reported on October 24.

SwitchGear Brewing will be housed inside the Feedmill Shops building at 44 Gottfried St., and will feature a production brewery and taproom.

Work on the brewery will begin this winter, with the opening planned for the spring of 2017.

The brewery, which will become the county’s fourth, is being launched by a group of friends and co-workers at Masters Gallery Foods in Plymouth.

The owners couldn’t be reached for comment but said in a press release that the name reflects their shared interest in motor vehicles and their “mutual passion for brewing.”

The operation will be owned and operated by Nick Kullmann, head brewmaster; Ryan Feldmann, assistant brewmaster and sales; and Mark Grasse, operations.

The brewery will feature a three-barrel system designed to accommodate future growth plans that may include wholesale distribution, according to the release.

The brewery will produce a range of beers, including bourbon barrel stouts, red ales, IPAs, nut browns and smash pale ales, with names such as Kettle Cream Ale and Resorter Red Ale.

Officials with the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corp., which has assisted with the project, said the brewery fills a need in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Ellicottville Brewing Co. to invest $5.5 mln in brewery in Little Valley
A 75,000 square foot building in Little Valley is about to get another lease on life — as a craft beer manufacturing facility, Olean Times Herald reported on October 24.

Ellicottville Brewing Co. plans to invest $5.5 million in the former King Windows/Salamanca Beverage Corp. building at 202 Second St.

Kreinheder Properties LLC/S&W Properties LLC. plans to hire 25 to 30 employees at the new facility.

Peter Kreinheder, owner of Ellicottville Brewing Co., is expected to present his plans to the Cattaraugus County Industrial Development Agency on October 25. He is seeking a sales tax abatement, a payment in lieu of taxes agreement and possibly a mortgage tax abatement for the project.

Ellicottville Brewing Co. opened in 1995 and operates a craft beer brewery and restaurant in Ellicottville, as well as brewing and restaurant facilities at Bemus Point on Chautauqua Lake.

The application states the project “will increase sales tax to the county/state, along with increasing the real property tax value with the slated improvements, along with bringing in various spin-off effects such as increased occupancy tax as well as for its themed weekends and employment.”

Ellicottville Brewing Co. employs 160. With benefits, the average salary is $55,000, officials report.

“This is a very significant investment which ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Market share of imported beers may hit 10% this year
Will the growth of imported beer brands reach the sales of Korean beer brewers? Recent data, which was announced by discount chains and industry sources, shows the answer to this question could be yes, the Korea Times reported on October 24.

NH Investment and Securities said that Hite Jinro's third quarter result will drop 10 percent year-on-year.

The nation's No. 2 brewer was estimated to have 516 billion won ($454 million) in sales and 48 billion won in profit for the third quarter, which is a 2.8 percent rise and 0.4 percent decrease, respectively.

This figure was due to the shift of consumption from Korean beers, which are increasingly being mixed with soju, to imported beers, according to industry officials. More young people in their 20s and 30s enjoy drinking premium alcohol, despite the expense.

According to the Fair Trade Commission, market share of imported beer was 8.4 percent in 2015, but the figure may hit 10 percent this year.

E-mart said its sales of imported beers reached 44 percent of total beer sales, between January and October. If the trend continues, the figure will mark 50 percent, the discount chain said.

One of Korea's leading convenience stores, CU, also said sales of imported beer have ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Unions claim Carlton & United Breweries is facing the prospect of several millions of dollars in losses
Beer giant Carlton & United Breweries is facing the prospect of several millions of dollars in losses as it struggles to meet rising demand in the lead-up to Christmas, The Australian Financial Review reported on October 25 citing local unions.

The brewer has so far managed to survive the four-month industrial dispute affecting its Abbotsford plant in Victoria by transporting beer from its Queensland factory and sourcing warehoused stock.

However, the Electrical Trades Union says that stock is coming to an end and there is "no question" CUB will not be able to meet the doubling in alcohol demand for the summer months.

"There is no way, given the loss over the last 18 weeks, that they can match the next six weeks," ETU state secretary Troy Gray said.

"Everyone agrees on that. Even if they went back to the normal levels tomorrow they'd struggle to reach Christmas demands."

About 55 retrenched maintenance workers have picketed the Abbotsford site since July after the company offered them their jobs back on substantially reduced wages and conditions.

The union says the replacement maintenance staff are less experienced and have resulted in longer stoppages to the factory's intense 24-hour, six-day-a-week production schedule.

Reports from workers within the factory say production ...More info on site
