Brewery news USA: MillerCoors Q1 net income up 22.2%
SABMiller plc and Molson Coors Brewing Company reported on May 3 that MillerCoors first quarter underlying net income grew 22.2 percent to $372.1 million from the same period in the prior year. This income growth was driven by lower cost of goods sold, higher net pricing, positive sales mix and timing of shipments. For the fourth consecutive quarter, Coors Light and Miller Lite each gained share of the Premium Light segment.

The company’s total net sales increased 2.3 percent to $1.816 billion. Domestic net revenue per barrel grew 1.5 percent for the quarter as a result of favorable net pricing and positive sales mix.

Total company net revenue per barrel, including contract brewing and company-owned distributor sales, increased 1.3 percent for the quarter.

Third-party contract brewing volumes were down 1.3 percent for the quarter.

Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors weeks away from announcing fate of its original brewery in Montreal
Molson Coors says it is weeks away from announcing the fate of its original brewery in Montreal, Medicine Hat News reported on May 3.

The company is reviewing the feasibility of a building a new brewery on its site in Old Montreal and is expected to make a decision in early summer, Molson Coors Canada CEO Stewart Glendinning said.

“If it’s better to invest in the current one, we will,” he said in an interview. “If it’s better to build a new one, we will, but either way it’s good news for the province.”

Molson Coors received C$110 million in net proceeds from the C$185 million sale of its operations in Vancouver in the first quarter. The company will continue to produce beer at the B.C. site for up to five years until it finds a location to build a more efficient-production facility, it said.

The Denver and Montreal-based company beat expectations as its net profit almost doubled to US$158.8 million or 78 cents per diluted share in the first quarter, helped by the sale of the Vancouver brewery. That compared to US$81.1 million or 43 cents per share a year earlier.

Brewery news Australia: Purchase of Byron Bay Brewing increases number of Lion-owned craft breweries to six
Japanese-owned drinks and dairy group Lion now has a six pack of stand-alone craft breweries in its stable as it pursues the 20 per cent-plus growth rates in that segment, while mainstream beers lose its fizz, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on May 2.

But can a corporate giant have street credibility as a craft brewer, and is there a danger a large corporate bureaucracy might constrict the entrepreneurial and pioneering spirit which led to its establishment in the first place?

Lion is buying Byron Bay Brewing Company after being approached by its owner Barry Schadel, which will expand the number of craft breweries in its portfolio to half a dozen. The broader Lion portfolio represents about 50 per cent of Australia's entire craft beer market, which experts say makes up about 5 per cent of the entire A$14 billion beer market in Australia.

Byron Bay Brewing Co previously had a relationship with Australia's other big brewer, Carlton & United Breweries, which was previously owned by Foster's until a A$12.3 billion takeover in late 2011.

CUB was fined A$20,400 in April, 2014 by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission over misleading labelling for a Byron Bay Pale Lager, which had actually been brewed under ...More info on site

Brewery news Jamaica: Red Stripe to strive to “responsibly” increase the frequency of beer consumption among adults
Desnoes & Geddes Limited, which trades as Red Stripe Jamaica, will strive to "responsibly" increase the "frequency" of drinking among adults, which the brewery says is pretty low relative to markets in the hemisphere, The Gleaner reported on May 4.

It also plans to double exports in four years, a plan that involves tapping markets never before explored by Red Stripe.

The company estimates that only 75 per cent of drinking age Jamaicans are beer consumers, and it aims to bring the other 25 per cent along, partly by converting rum drinkers to beer.

Red Stripe, which had its 98th annual general meeting (AGM) on May 3, wants to grow domestic sales by around 10 to per cent to 12 per cent this year, according to managing director Ricardo Nuncio.

It would add around J$1.4 billion to domestic revenue, Wednesday Business estimates, based on the latest sales revenue reported by the company at half-year ending December. Red Stripe reported six-month sales of J$7.6 billion of which J$6.6 billion was domestic revenue.

The beer maker adjusted its financial year end to December from June to align with the reporting period of new parent, Heineken.

"We are going to introduce more innovation as per capita consumption is still ...More info on site

Brewery news Venezuela: Venezuela’s largest brewery occupied by National Guard for “inspection”
Venezuela’s National Guard on May 3 occupied the largest beer-producing plant in the country, which stopped brewing operations on April 29, as well as other plants belonging to Alimentos Polar, part of the country’s largest industrial concern, Latin American Herald Tribune reported.

Expropriation and nationalizations are a common occurrence in Venezuela since the beginning of the Hugo Chavez era in 1999, although Polar’s would be the largest in the country’s history.

“Yes, the National Guard is still here,” a Polar official told Latin American Herald Tribune, asking not to be identified by name. “Personnel from different agencies but always accompanied by the National Guard.” On Monday, May 2, 60 plants were visited. On May 3, government presence remains in at least five of those plants, including all the four brewing ones.

The San Joaquin plant in Carabobo state is the largest of four owned in country by Cerveceria Polar, maker of 80% of all the beer drunk in Venezuela, and has been under inspection since Monday, May 2 morning.

The fact that other plants belonging to Polar are also being “inspected” by large contingents of the National Guard, representatives from the Labor Ministry and other government officials is causing concern in Venezuela’s business community, ...More info on site

Whisky news India: United Spirits rises on Bombay Stock Exchange after reports of Diageo planning stake increase
United Spirits rose 4.6% to Rs 2,468.65 on May 3 on BSE after reports Diageo Plc is considering raising stake in the liquor maker to 72% from 54.78%, Business Standard said.

Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex was down 172.59 points, or 0.68%, to 25,264.38.

Diageo is reportedly exploring various options, including open market transactions to raise its stake in United Spirits (USL). Diageo gained complete control of the board of United Spirits post the exit of Dr Vijay Mallya from his position as chairman and non-executive director of the company in February this year, but seeks to protect its shareholding by hiking stake. Diageo in July 2014 had acquired 26% stake in USL by way of tender offer. As per an agreement reached between Diageo and the UB group in November 2012, Diageo agreed to acquire a 27.4% stake in United Spirits - partly by acquiring shares directly from the promoter entities of the United Breweries group and partly by way of subscribing to a preferential share issue of United Spirits. The agreement triggered a mandatory open offer from Diageo to acquire additional 26% shares in United Spirits as per the Securities & Exchange Board of India's takeover norms.

Net profit of United Spirits ...More info on site
