Brewery news Canada, NS: Nova Scotia’s craft brewers asking for equalized alcohol taxes
Nova Scotia’s craft brewers are asking the government to hop to it when it comes to equalizing the province’s booze taxes, The Chronicle Herald reported on April 22.

Craft Brewers Association of Nova Scotia president Emily Tipton said the province’s craft brewers pay more than double the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation remittance tax paid by wineries and craft distillers when those businesses sell directly to customers at their own shops, private liquor stores and bars.

Craft breweries pay 50 cents for every litre they sell directly, while craft distillers and wineries pay five per cent of wholesale, translating to about 20 cents per litre, she said.

Tipton, a founding partner at Shelburne-based Boxing Rock Brewing Co, said that meant if she sells a 20-litre keg to a bar for C$100, she pays C$10 in tax. If she paid five per cent of wholesale, that number would drop to C$4, she said.

Tipton said the NSLC’s own figures showed the difference amounted to C$400,000 a year in revenue for the government.

“That’s money we would be otherwise investing in our businesses,” she said.

For Tipton, equalized remittances would mean being able to hire a new employee at her brewery. More than 300 people already work in Nova ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Unbranded Brewing Company to become Hialeah’s first brewery in 2017
Hialeah is getting a brewery. Unbranded Brewing Company, located in the newly branded Leah Arts District, will open in 2017, making it the first operation to secure a location in the up-and-coming area of Miami-Dade, Miami New Times reported on April 22.

Owner Zachary Swanson confirmed he recently acquired a 31,000-square-foot warehouse located at 1395 East 11th Ave. that'll serve as the brewhouse. Julian Uribe, who works in a popular Miami hotel in the city's MiMo District, will join the operation as managing partner.

Most of Miami-Dade's breweries are located in Wynwood, Doral, or Kendall, but Swanson chose Hialeah because it seemed like an "interesting place." This might be the catalyst for Hialeah to become a major destination for local beer-makers seeking space. Hialeah Brewing Company will launch a crowdfunding campaign in May to collect funds to purchase a permanent spot in its namesake city.

"I also don't think Miami craft breweries have seriously targeted the Cuban demographic, and it's very populous in Hialeah," Swanson says.

The beer entrepreneur, originally from Houston, moved to Miami six years ago to pursue a PhD in philosophy from the University of Miami. Postgraduate job prospects looked slim, so Swanson tapped into a decade's worth of ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Brick Brewing receives Toronto Stock Exchange approval to renew its normal course issuer bid
Brick Brewing Co. Limited, Ontario's largest Canadian-owned brewery, on April 21 announced that it has received approval from the Toronto Stock Exchange ("TSX") to renew its normal course issuer bid (the "NCIB") permitting Brick to purchase for cancellation up to 1,700,000 common shares ("Shares") over a 12-month period, representing 4.8% of the Shares outstanding as of April 13, 2016.

The NCIB will commence on April 25, 2016 and terminate on April 24, 2017, or such earlier date on which purchases under the NCIB have been completed. Purchases of Shares under the NCIB will be made through the facilities of the TSX or alternative Canadian trading systems at the market price of the Shares at the time of acquisition. The maximum number of Shares that may be purchased on a daily basis, subject to any approved exceptions, will be 3,394 Shares. Shares purchased under the NCIB will be cancelled.

During the last twelve months, the Company purchased 204,200 Shares for cancellation at a volume weighted average price of C$1.65 per Share under a normal course issuer bid which expires on April 23, 2016.

Brewery news USA, IL: Ten Ninety Brewing Company opening in Glenview on April 25
What happens when a guy and two of his buddies, all who share a passion for craft beer, start home brewing together? Ten Ninety Brewing Company, Chicago Tribune reported on April 20.

On April 25th, Brian Schafer of Glenview, Jamie Hoban of Naperville and Andy Smith of Chicago will officially open their 11,000-square-foot brewery and tap room, located in downtown Glenview on Waukegan Road, across from Heinen's.

"Glenview is a tremendous community, and is our demographic," said 41-year-old Schafer, a former corporate finance executive who holds an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and who started the company with his two friends two years ago. Its prior location was in Zion.

Ten Ninety Brewing Co. has 19 different beers on the market, with 11 fermenting at any given time, according to Hoban, who holds an MBA from the University of Chicago, and who worked in finance and banking for 10 years.

The brewery, with its exposed brick and wooden truss ceiling, can be seen through large glass windows from its tap room, where craft beer lovers can enjoy and sample different beers and beer flights.

With seating for 91, the tap room is decorated with dark hardwood floors, dark wood furniture, high ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Calusa Brewing Co preparing to open its doors on April 28
Sarasota County's newest craft brewery, Calusa Brewing Co., plans to open to the public this week after months of work, Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported on April 26.

Sarasota natives Vic Falck and Geordie Rauch said they got inspired to create a brewery while living in San Diego, a craft beer mecca. They were friends with a California homebrewer, Jason Thompson, and asked him if he'd like to go pro with them. He jumped at the opportunity.

Together they created Calusa at 5701 Derek Ave., off Clark Road in Sarasota County, and say its tasting room will open on April 28 at noon. The brewery is named in honor of the American Indians who lived here for thousands of years.

"We want to do a bit of a barrel aging program moving forward," Falck said. Their first focus will be on hoppy beers, saisons and sour ales.

Calusa will be open Thursdays from noon to 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from noon to midnight and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. For now the beers will only be available on tap and in to-go growlers at the tasting room, Falck said.

Brewery news USA, MD: Black Flag Brewing Co. scheduled to open in Columbia in June
A hobby that started nine years ago for Brian Gaylor is now in the final stages of preparation to become a full-fledged brewery as Black Flag Brewing Co. is scheduled to open this June in Columbia, Baltimore Business Journal reported on April 22.

Gaylor, who started brewing beer in his home in 2007 at the same time he was wrapping up school at the University of Maryland, will occupy Suite C at 9315 Snowden River Parkway in Columbia. The 8,600-square-foot space will have a tasting room in the front 2,000 square feet and the rest will be used for brewing. The entire project, Gaylor said, will require about a $1.2 million investment.

Besides Gaylor, Black Flag will have a head brewer and assistant brewer on day one with the front of house staff that serves the tasting room yet to be hired. The goal is to produce 1,500 barrels in the first year, with a stretch goal of 2,000 barrels. The space provides enough capacity to make up to 3,000 barrels a year, but Gaylor said a lower barrel count in the first year will help them keep everything running smoothly.

The tasting room will have 75 seats between the tables and bar. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ID: Payette Brewing opening new headquarters in Boise soon
When Payette Brewing Co.’s new headquarters opens at 733 S. Pioneer St. in Boise, the experience will be plush compared to the brewery’s 2010 debut in Garden City, Idaho Statesman reported on April 20.

For one thing, there will be furniture.

“I don’t think we had chairs when we first opened this place,” Payette founder Mike Francis remembers with a chuckle. “I think we just told people to stand at the bar and have a beer.”

Six years later, Payette cranks out more beer than any other Idaho brewery. The new Boise facility — in the former 32,000-square-foot home of Bronco Elite Athletics — is a $4.5 million project that will ramp up Payette’s distribution in nearby states.

For Boise beer drinkers, the biggest perk will be a tap room that holds about 200 people.

“There’s a chance that we might have a soft opening next weekend,” Francis says. “That’s what we’re pushing for right now. I think it can be done. But I’m also not so sure at this point. Things change fast.”

Payette recently posted an ad on its Facebook page seeking new employees: “Tap room with outdoor beer garden will offer over 20 Payette beers on tap and we’re looking for badass on-premise ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Highway 97 Brewery aiming to open in Penticton in July
A new brewery named after British Columbia’s longest and most iconic highway is set to open this summer in the Okanagan Valley, Canadian Beer News reported.

Highway 97 Brewery will be the fourth brewery in the city of Penticton, and takes its name from B.C. Highway 97 which runs more than 2000 km from the U.S. border in the south to the Yukon border in the north.

Aiming to open in July, Highway 97 will feature a locally-built brewhouse from Biron Stainless that will be used to brew four core brands – Amber Ale, IPA, Scotch Ale and Pilsner – as well as a rotating seasonal session beer, all using locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible.

Highway 97 Brewery will be located at 954 Eckhardt Ave West in Penticton, and will feature a tasting room and retail store in a warehouse-style environment. Its beers will also be available at liquor retailers in British Columbia and Alberta.

Brewery news USA, AZ: Invictus Brewing could open in Phoenix before the end of the year
Invictus Brewing Co. says construction will start on its Blaine brewery and taproom at 2025 105th Ave. N.E. in Phoenix in May or early June, Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal reported on April 20.

Current plans include a 220-seat sports-themed taproom, a 100-person patio and a kitchen. The brewery and taproom could open before the end of the year.

The two-vessel brewery will be able to produce 3,000 barrels of beer per year and will have room for expansion, according to a job posting for a head brewer.

The plans are set to go before the City Council for approval in May.

Brewery news USA, WY: Wind River Brewing Company decides to open new brewing facility in Evanston
Pinedale’s Wind River Brewing Company will be opening a new brewing facility and restaurant at the Roundhouse in Evanston. This comes after the company fought for years to build that facility in Pinedale, Wyoming Public Media reported on April 26.

Wind River Brewing owners Tamra and Shawn Watts have lived in Pinedale all their lives. The couple wanted to build their new brewery and tasting room there, but Pinedale’s mayor halted the expansion when he was stopped by the city from changing some zoning rules. So, they’re building it away from their hometown—150 miles South to Evanston.

Built in the early 1900s, the Roundhouse building in Evanston was originally used by the Union Pacific Railroad. It will soon be renovated to house the Wind River Brewing Company’s expansion, thanks to a “community readiness” grant from the State Loan and Investment Board.

Tamra Watts says the building is one of a kind.

“There’s probably not a cooler place in the United States for a brewery. And this building really needs saving for many reasons, much more than just our brewing operations. It needs saving for the state of Wyoming and for its national treasure.”

When the expansion plans faded in Pinedale, fourteen different communities reached ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA & WA: Waynesboro-based Seven Arrows Brewing Co. to expand distribution
Waynesboro-based Seven Arrows Brewing Co. has announced it will now be distributing in the Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia, Staunton News Leader reported on April 20.

According to Melissa Allen, co-owner of Seven Arrows Brewing Co., the brews are being distributed through Hop and Wine Beverage and expected to start distributing in May.

The brewery started distributing locally back in February 2015 through Blue Ridge Beverage Company. This is a huge step for the considerably young business venture, Allen said.

“This is an exciting time for us here at Seven Arrows,” Allen added. “Expanding into the Northern Virginia and D.C. areas has us on track to exceed our second-year expectations and get visibility throughout the state of Virginia sooner than we had forecast.”

There are plans to have a presence in Richmond. “We are excited to have expanded, and our distribution now ranges throughout the entire state of Virginia and D.C., with the exception of the greater Richmond area,” Allen said. “We are hoping to expand there later in the year.”

The brewery first opened in 2014 and recently won an award at the 2015 Virginia Craft Brewers Festival. The brewery’s Skyline Lager received a gold medal in the light lager division. More than 60 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Wedge Brewing to build second location in Asheville
Asheville’s Wedge Brewing will make a major expansion by adding a second brewery location in a former tannery building in Asheville's River Arts District. The new brewery will include both a seven-barrel brew house and indoor and outdoor seating and will let Wedge double its brewing production, owner Tim Schaller said. Wedge sells most of its beer at its brewery tasting room and does not distribute into South Carolina, Greenville Online reported on April 26.

The new brewery will probably carry the Wedge name but Schaller said he hasn't decided on a complete identity yet. The now empty 8,000 square foot structure is part of the Foundation property, once used for manufacturing and then for artists’ studios.

Schaller has long resisted the idea of expanding the original Wedge, a popular location in the lower back level of the Wedge gallery building facing a Norfolk Southern railroad line and the French Broad River. While Wedge draws big crowds in the spring, summer and fall, business drops off in the winter because the seating is outdoors. "I thought that if I don't do this (project) someone else will come in and do it," Schaller said. Even with a doubling of its brewing, Schaller ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Buffalo’s Big Ditch Brewing Company to expand production capacity
After recently being called “Best Craft Brewery in New York State” at the TAP NY craft beer festival, a local company has announced their plans for expansion, Flavor574 reported on April 26.

Buffalo’s Big Ditch Brewing Company says they are going to expand their brewery and tap room, as well as make their beer available for purchase in cans around western New York.

Big Ditch, which was founded by four western New Yorkers in 2013, was among more than 120 New York breweries attending the TAP NY event in Hunter, N.Y.

“We are extremely humbled and grateful to win this award,” stated Matt Kahn, president of Big Ditch Brewing Company. “While our staff has worked very hard for this, the accomplishment wouldn’t be possible without the outstanding support we’ve received from the local community.”

Their name pays homage to a New York staple — the Erie Canal. The “Big Ditch,” as it was nicknamed early on, was a major part of Buffalo’s quick growth into one of the country’s biggest cities by the early twentieth century.

The company’s expansion is expected to triple their brewing capacity, which is currently about 5,000 barrels or 150,000 gallons of beer per year.

“We’re pleased to be increasing our investment ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Despite economy problems Nigerians consume more beer than last year
Nigeria’s economy has been battered in the last six months as the country reels from the effects of low oil prices and a currency slide. Nigerians are feeling the brunt as jobs have been cut and businesses closed down. To make matters worse, the country, Africa’s largest oil producer, is also in the grip of one of its worst fuel scarcity and power shortage difficulties, Quartz reported on April 24.

Yet, despite all this, first quarter results from Heineken show Nigerians are consuming more beer than at the same time last year despite the harsh times.

The Dutch brewery announced that organic consolidated beer volume grew 4.6% across the Africa, Middle East, Eastern Europe regions with Nigeria being a major driver of that growth. In its statement, Heineken says excluding Nigeria, volume would have been down for the region.

Heineken faced stiffer realities in other parts of the region as it said “both affordability and lower tourism” are “continuing to impact performance” but thanks to its performance in the Nigerian market, consolidated beer volume is up from first quarter a year ago.

Despite increased consumption, Heineken still faces challenges in Nigeria. The world’s third largest brewery says “underlying trading conditions remain tough” amid a ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: AB InBev’s Camden Town Brewery to add second production facility in London
Anheuser-Busch InBev's recent UK acquisition Camden Town Brewery is to expand production to a second north London site.

The UK brewer said earlier this week that it has signed a lease on a new facility in Enfield that, when completed early next year, will bring all of its production in-house. Camden, which AB InBev agreed to buy four months ago, has a production site at its headquarters in the Camden borough of London, and outsources some brewing to Belgium.

The new 57,000-square-foot brewery will employ up to 70 people over the next two years, Camden said.

"The exciting events of last year have given us a great opportunity to transform Camden Town Brewery from an outstanding London brewery to a world famous one," said founder Jasper Cuppaidge. "With the support of AB InBev and this new addition to our family, Enfield will not only keep all our brewing close to home in North London, but also enable us to make more great beers."

AB InBev agreed to pay a reported GBP85 mln (US$124 mln) for Camden Town Brewery in December. At the time, the company said plans included a second brewery to keep up with demand.

Last week, AB InBev said it would take full ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Craft beer market share is now 13% in New Zealand, research shows
ANZ research into craft brewing has found that niche craft beer market is the fastest growing category of beer, while mainstream beer consumption has fallen in New Zealand, stuff.co.nz reported on April 24.

Craft beer's market share has grown from nine per cent in 2013 to 13 per cent of all beers sold today, and the number of craft brewers has doubled in the last five years.

With all this growth, it's unsurprising that more than a third of Kiwi craft beer brewers are exporting their brews, and a further 30 per cent have ambitions to enter the export scene within two years.

Three are more than 100 craft breweries currently operating in New Zealand.

Brewery news Uganda: Thing not moving on too well for Nile Breweries Ltd.
When it embarked on building a beer plant in Mbarara in 2012, Nile Breweries counted much of its fortune within the region's demand for beer. But the change in the political and economic environment has left top company officials scratching their heads for a solution, writes ALON MWESIGWA.

Things have not been moving on well for beer maker Nile Breweries Limited. The company faces a number of challenges across the region - high import taxes, for instance, according to company officials.

Speaking to journalists last week at the company's headquarters in Luzira, managing director Greg Metcalf said the market in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania were not flourishing because of the imposed import taxes.

"There was a little bit of disappointment when we built the Mbarara plant. We had in mind that we would be able to export to DRC but they imposed import tax on beer," said Metcalf. The Mbarara plant cost $90.6 million.

He added that beer sales first dropped by close to 20 per cent but now it is around five per cent. DRC introduced excise duty on soft drinks and beer in 2014 to the tune of 30 per cent. This led to an increase in beer prices, ...More info on site

The draught version of Heineken Light will be brewed at Heineken's brewery in Cork, where it employs 450 staff, while the bottled version will be imported from Holland.

According to Sharon Walsh, marketing director of Heineken Ireland: "Heineken Light is another exciting innovation for us, coming on the back of our successful entry into the cider market with Orchard Thieves.

"We are proud for Ireland to be leading the charge in Europe and ...More info on site
