Australia: Lion purchases craft brewer Bay Brewing Co.
|
Australia’s Lion, itself owned by Japan’s Kirin Holdings, has announced it's purchasing the Byron Bay Brewing Co, including its range of beers, brewery and hospitality operation, Australian Hospitality Magazine reported on April 29.
Lion has a growing portfolio of craft beers, including Little Creatures, James Squire, White Rabbit, Kosciusko and Knappstein.
Gordon Treanor, craft marketing director at Lion, said “When we were approached by Byron Bay Brewing Co we saw an opportunity to invest in a great local brewery, hospitality operation and craft beer portfolio, with a view to building the business locally and, possibly, in time, sharing these great beers with more people across the country.”
Barry Schadel, owner of Byron Bay Brewing Co, said he feels Lion shares his vision for the company.
“My number one priority was finding a buyer who would continue to invest in the brewery, beers and venue and take the business from strength to strength. Lion has a strong track record of doing this with other craft beers and I know I am leaving Byron Bay Brewing Co in good hands.”
Lion plans to invest in both the brewery and the venue, which includes a bar and restaurant, including a potential refurbishment following the completion of the purchase.

Germany: Creative craft brewers facing off against a medieval purity law

Brewing beer is a sacred thing in Germany. And there are rules one must follow. One hugely popular tradition is the Reinheitsgebot, the “beer purity law” that says which ingredients are allowed. This past weekend it turned a sprightly 500 years old — the world’s longest-ruling food law, the German Brewers’ Federation says.
It’s such a big deal that even busy Chancellor Angela Merkel made sure to visit the Bavarian city of Ingolstadt to be seen raising a beer stein for the law’s anniversary, PRI reported on April 27.
But while Merkel and some beer lovers may cherish German purity, the old rules are becoming quite a buzzkill for upstart brewers trying to inject a dose of creative flavor. Some craft beer makers, in effect, are losing the right to call their brews beer at all.
It started with a 1516 decree by Bavarian Duke Wilhelm IV. The Reinheitsgebot mandated that beer could only contain water, barley and hops. A later tweak to the law added yeast to the list.
By keeping impurities and additives out, brewers here credit the Reinheitsgebot with the excellent reputation German beer enjoys at home and abroad. Even non-German brewers find much to admire in this medieval statute.

Craft beer arrived in Vietnam not long ago but has quickly gained popularity here, especially among office workers. It is obvious that the trend is here to stay as it has become an exciting part of the new Vietnamese urban culture, Thanh Nien Daily reported on April 27.
According to market research by digital advertising companies in America, “craft beer” has been one of hottest search topics on the Internet since 2009. Many people have come to love it, but some market analysts were sceptical, saying the beer might not be able to have a long-term success.
Breweries making craft beer have popped up everywhere, originally in Europe, then America and now starting to spread in Asia. Yet the breweries are still operating more like partners than competitors.
Craft beer is a clever combination between traditional ingredients and creative brewing techniques, in which some might find a resemblance to wine production. Each brewery usually comes up with a unique special taste created by their own brewmasters, who help make sure that every brewpub can offer something surprising and delightful.

UK: Carlsberg UK launching premium beer brewed in Sweden
|
Carlsberg UK is to launch a premium beer and craft cider exclusively in the on-trade this spring, available on draught in bars and pubs, Bar Magazine reported on April 27.
Available from May 2, they are Shed Head, a 4.6% ABV American-style pale ale, and Bad Apple, a 5.1% ABV cider from Herefordshire – the first craft cider in Carlsberg UK’s portfolio.
Shed Head is dry hopped using Cascade and Citra hops, brewed in Falkenberg, Sweden and imported to the UK. The beer is balanced perfectly with bitterness and tropical fruit aromas to provide refreshment and deliver on flavour.
It joins Carlsberg UK’s popular Backyard Brewery range, alongside Lawn Mower and Bee 17, which have both been available in 330ml can format in the UK since 2014.
David Scott, marketing director at Carlsberg UK said: “As the craft beer revolution goes from strength-to-strength, we are delighted to introduce Shed Head, a new premium craft beer packed full of flavour that we know beer-drinkers will love.”

India: Ireland’s C&C partners with Mahou India to brew several Tennent’s products under licence in India

Drinks group C&C has announced a new partnership deal with Mahou India, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Spanish brewing major Mahou San Miguel, RTE.ie reported on April 28.
The deal comes as the company continues to ramp up its international expansion in Asia-Pacific and marks its third strategic partnership in the recent months.
C&C and Spanish-headquartered Mahou San Miguel have reached a deal to brew several Tennent’s products under licence in India.
Initially Tennent's and Mahou India will launch Tennent's Whisky Oak Aged Beer and Tennent's IPA, the first authentic Indian Pale Ale, to be brewed in India.
C&C said that the country is a rapidly growing beer market.
"The deal strengthens Tennent’s presence in India, and we hope it allows for participation in the spectacular growth and premiumisation of the Indian Beer Market," commented Joris Brams, Managing Director of C&C Group’s International Division.

Combined UK wheat and barley exports hit the highest monthly level since November 2011 in February, aided partially by currency movements, FarmingUK reported on April 29.
Nevertheless, uncertainty around future exchange rates combined with factors such as the price carry and UK price competitiveness will have a bearing on the level of grain stocks the UK will carry into next season.
It is no secret that this season the UK has a large wheat and barley surplus for either export or to carry over into next season.
The latest supply and demand forecasts estimate the combined surplus of wheat and barley in the UK at 6.8 mln tonnes.
So far this season (Jul-Feb) the UK has exported 2.85 mln tonnes of the grains, leaving 4 mln tonnes (or 60% of the surplus) to either export from March-June or carry over into next season.
Since the end of December and moving into 2016, sterling has weakened considerably against a number of currencies, including the euro and the US dollar.
This has aided UK cereals price competitiveness and helped boost exports over the past few months.
Furthermore, in February, combined wheat and barley exports totalled 512.5 thousand tonnes, the highest combined level since November 2011.

Ukraine: Ukrainian barley exports amount to 75.9 thousand tonnes in March
|
Barley exports from Ukraine amounted to 75.9 thousand tonnes in March 2016, which was much less than in March 2015 (206.8 thousand tonnes) but more than in the previous month (24 thousand tonnes), UkrAgroConsult reported.
Since the beginning of the season Ukraine exported 4.5% less barley than in the same period of last season (4040.4 thousand tonnes compared to 4232.4 thousand tonnes in July-March 2014/15 MY).
Saudi Arabia, the main barley market of Ukraine, had 55% of the total export volume this season against 63% in 2014/15 MY.
During the current marketing year, Ukraine has consolidated its position in the markets of China, Libya, Algeria, doubling the supply to these countries. Moreover, Ukraine has already exported 200% more barley to the EU countries than last season (about 200 thousand tonnes against 62.5 thousand tonnes).
Despite the consistently high demand for Ukrainian barley by Saudi Arabia, Ukrainian exporters have diversified markets outlet in the current season.
