Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev obtains secondary inward listing in Johannesburg
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) has obtained a secondary inward listing on the JSE Main Board with effect from the commencement of trading on January 15, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange announced on January 12.

The world’s largest brewer announced in November that it intends to list on the South African Reserve Bank and the JSE for the secondary inward listing after acquiring SABMiller for US $107 billion.

An inward listing is required if a non-South African company wants to raise capital in South Africa or issue shares as acquisition currency to South Africans as part of a merger or acquisition.

The JSE on January 12 said AB InBev would be considered for index inclusion at the March 2016 Quarterly Review for the first time, subject to all other index eligibility criteria being passed, since index series is not applicable to any share that is classified as foreign for index purposes.

At the time of this announcement the average net market cap of the All Share Index was approximately R41 billion, whereas 5 percent of AB InBev’s global market capitalisation was approximately R160 billion.

Brewery news Hong Kong: Beer drinkers eager to embrace local craft brands
Rohit Dugar is a humble man. So when he opened a bottle of Tàisuì and offhandedly said, "There’s almost no beer like this in the world," he wasn’t bragging about his creation. He was merely stating a fact, the Eater reported on January 12.

Dugar passed a few glasses of Tàisuì around the table. A couple of beer geeks sniffed it, then sipped. It was something new. Moments later, one said, "It smells like fu yu, yeah!" He was referring to a type of fermented tofu that is pungent and salty, often used as a seasoning in Chinese dishes. A few seconds later he followed up to say, "It’s a sharp drink. You try it and you’re like, 'Wow, what is that?'" Tàisuì is a little dry, a little sour, with a little bit of funk. The beer geeks’ conversation veered away from chit-chat and they dug through the table’s collective gustatory vocabulary in search of the right words to describe what they just drank. Haam yu, salted fish? Not quite.

Tàisuì isn’t a lambic, but it’s something imagined in that direction—cloudy, sour, with a thick mouthfeel. Drawing inspiration from spontaneous fermentation involving wild yeasts, Dugar and his crew at Young Master ...More info on site

Barley news USA: ND Genesis barley added to AMBA’s 2016 list of recommended malting barley varieties
The new North Dakota State University two-rowed barley variety ND Genesis has been added to the American Malting Barley Association's (AMBA) 2016 list of recommended malting barley varieties. The announcement came following the AMBA board meeting held in December in Milwaukee.

ND Genesis was released by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 2015 and distributed for the first time through the North Dakota County Seed Increase Program.

Improved foliar disease resistance and yield potential give ND Genesis an advantage over Pinnacle, an NDSU two-rowed barley variety released in 2007.

"ND Genesis seems adapted to all parts of North Dakota and adjacent areas of Minnesota, Montana and South Dakota," says Richard Horsley, NDSU Department of Plant Sciences head. "ND Genesis also has some promise in the spring barley production areas of the eastern U.S., where growers producing barley for the craft market have been growing Pinnacle because of its low protein."

ND Genesis is a high-yielding barley variety. Based on eight years of the barley breeding program's yield trials across the state, ND Genesis has about a 5 percent yield advantage over Pinnacle. The average yield advantage is more than 8 percent in eastern North Dakota and nearly 3 percent in western North Dakota.
