Barley news USA: Malting barley growers still waiting for contract announcements from most US maltsters
With only Anheuser-Busch announcing malting barley contract figures for 2016 so far, that leaves those growers who normally contract with the other maltsters wondering when those contracts will be coming out and at what price they will be offered, Farm and Ranch Guide reported on January 6.

Busch has reduced the acres they are contracting, according to Randy Brag of Valley Grain Milling, and are offering contract prices in the range of $4.80 a bushel.

“That’s a decent number,” Brag said. “I am sure for those who haven’t contracted yet they are getting plenty of calls since producers need to start getting their finances lined up for the next year as far as what they are going to do.”

Part of the reason for the delay in releasing contracts is the fact the maltsters over-contracted acres in 2015 in response to the short crop they had in 2014. However, the 2015 crop turned out to be of good quality and high yielding in most areas, thus resulting in a large supply of high quality malting barley.

There also appears to be a fair amount of barley that is close to the edge of being malting barley quality that has been grown on an open ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: AB InBev’s 10 Barrel Brewing confirms plans for new brewery and pub in Denver
10 Barrel Brewing, a popular Bend, Oregon-based brewery, has confirmed that it plans to open a brewery and pub in Denver within the next six months, Westword reported on January 6.

The brewery, founded in 2006 by brothers Chris and Jeremy Cox and Garrett Wales, is notable because of the acclaim and awards that it has won over the years — and because it was one of the first craft breweries to be purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev, in November 2013, as part of the Belgium-based beer conglomerate's recent flurry of acquisitions.

AB InBev gobbled up 25-year-old Colorado beer-making pioneer Breckenridge Brewery in December, and also owns seven other craft breweries nationwide, including Chicago's Goose Island, Elysian Brewing in Washington and Arizona-based Four Peaks. Those acquisitions have rankled the craft-beer industry, which was founded in part to compete with megabrewers.

“Pubs are huge in telling the story of 10 Barrel. When we expanded into Denver earlier this year we experienced for ourselves first-hand what an amazing craft-beer city it is and knew the next step was to build a pub there,” 10 Barrel said in a statement. “We’re super-stoked to announce we’ll start building shortly and that we will be brewing in Denver ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: MadTree Brewing Co. to build a second brewery in Cincinnati
MadTree Brewing Co. announced on January 6 that it will build a new $18 million brewery, tasting room and events center in Cincinnati's Oakley neighborhood.

The brewery hopes to open its new facility later this year. It will feature a 100-barrel brewhouse, outdoor beer garden and a taproom with 64 taps. The new site is about a mile away from its current location.

“It was extremely important for us to remain connected to the city and neighborhoods that have supported us since day one,” MadTree co-founder Kenny McNutt said in a news release. "This is where we all live, work, and play, and we didn’t want to abandon our home to save a few pennies. This expansion wouldn’t be possible without the support of our loyal customers, the City of Cincinnati, and JobsOhio."

The brewery expects to expand its distribution footprint in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana thanks to the increased production.

Founded by McNutt, Brady Duncan and Jeff Hunt, MadTree opened in early 2013 and became the first modern craft brewery in Ohio to can its beer. Its brands include PsycHOPathy, Gnarly Brown and Axis Mundi.

MadTree is the latest in a string of major expansions announced for the Cincinnati market. Rhinegeist Brewery recently underwent ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Second Wedge Brewing already operational in Uxbridge
2015 was likely the busiest year on record for new craft breweries in Ontario, and it stayed busy right until the end, with the final opening of the year taking place just days before the calendar switched over to 2016, Canadian Beer News reported on January 4.

Founded in Uxbridge by the husband-and-wife team of Rob Garrard and Joanne Richter, Second Wedge Brewing – named after the town’s location on the second of four wedges of the Oak Ridges Moraine – opened its tasting room and retail store at 14 Victoria Street on December 28th.

The brewery currently has three brands on tap – Monday Night Piper Scottish-Style Ale, 3 Rocks IPA, and Rain Maker Porter – with 650 ml bottles and growlers available.

Brewery news USA, OR: Great Notion Brewing launched in Portland
Great Notion Brewing, which took over Northeast Portland's former Mash Tun Brew Pub space last year, is ready to pour its own beers, OregonLive.com reported on January 6.

The brewery, at 2204 N.E. Alberta St., officially opened on New Year's Day. According to a press release, founders Paul Reiter, James Dugan and Andy Miller will pour samples of their beer - including juicy IPAs, barrel-aged sours and more experimental brews - alongside a cadre of guest taps through February. In March, a full lineup of Great Notion beers goes online.

Brewery news Canada, NT: NWT Brewing launches as the first brewery in the Northwest Territories in nearly two decades
Almost three years after it was originally proposed, the first brewery in the Northwest Territories in nearly two decades has opened in Yellowknife, Canadian Beer News reported on January 4.

The debut beers from NWT Brewing were tapped in the final days of 2015 at The Woodyard Brewhouse & Eatery, the adjoining pub and restaurant also operated by brewery owners Fletcher and Miranda Stevens.

The initial brands from the brewery include Turbid Wit, Ragged Ass Pine Pale Ale and Honey Bucket Nut Brown Ale, with others planned to follow soon.

Brewery news USA, NC: Burial Beer Company announces plans to build a second brewery
Asheville's Burial Beer Company announced plans on January 6 to build a second brewery and tasting room on the edge of Biltmore Village, a project that will eventually include a restaurant, Asheville Citizen-Times reported, citing the company's owners.

The new Burial operation will be at 16 Shady Oak Drive in historic buildings once used in the 1930s as barracks for the Civilian Conservation Corps crews that built the Blue Ridge Parkway, Buncombe County Commission Chairman David Gantt said. The investment is $1.8 million, and Burial will hire 17 new employees, said Jess Reiser, who founded the brewery with husband Doug Reiser and their brewing partner Tim Gormley. Eventually, the 20-barrel site will begin by producing 10,000 barrels of beer annually and looks to add more capacity as needed, Jess Reiser said.

The brewery will increase its sales area by shipping beer first into Georgia and then into South Carolina, she said. Construction will begin in six to eight weeks, with beer being brewed in spring, she said.

Business will continue as usual at the original Burial site at 40 Collier Ave. in the South Slope brewing district.

"We were looking for farmland (for a brewery) for some time," Jess Reiser said. "That was a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Side Project Brewing targets Maplewood for brewery
In the two years since Perennial Artisan Ales head brewer Cory King launched Side Project Brewing, his barrel-aged creations have ranked among the most acclaimed and, due to their limited releases, sought-after craft beers in the country. During that time, Side Project has lived up to its name, operating out of Perennial's St. Louis facility, STLtoday.com reported on January 6.

That will soon change, however. As 40 South News first reported, King has targeted 7458 Manchester Road in Maplewood as a permanent home for Side Project Brewery. The location is just around the corner from the Side Project Cellar, the bar that King and his wife, Karen, opened in November 2014.

The Kings have declined to answer media questions about the new brewery, saying it is "too early" to do so. However, they did issue a statement.

According to the statement, "A new space in Maplewood would allow Side Project to moderately increase production and availability of their oak-aged beers and provide a brewery experience for those interested in visiting and seeing the Side Project processes."

The Side Project Cellar will remain at its current location.

Brewery news Canada, NB: Johnny Jacks Brewery opens in Oromocto, New Brunswick
The Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reports that a new brewery quietly opened in the small town of Oromocto, New Brunswick just before the holidays.

Johnny Jacks Brewery has been founded by the father-daughter team of David and Vanessa Foss and partner Young Joo Lee.

Named after family ancestor Jack “Johnny” Gullison, a World War I soldier who brewed his own beer, Johnny Jacks currently has two beers in production – Smokin’ Amber and Snowshoe Winter Ale – with both of them available exclusively at the Sour Grape Cafe next door to the brewery.

Brewery news USA, FL: Sanford Brewing Co. begins construction of new brewery, set to open in Q2
Central Florida is ready to pop the top on its newest brewery come spring 2016, Orlando Business Journal reported on January 6.

Sanford Brewing Co. began construction this week on its new 4,500-square-foot craft brewery and taproom at 400 S. Sanford Ave. and is set to open in the second quarter of this year. The facility will include a 15-barrel, or 465-gallon, primary brewing system; a three-barrel, or 93-gallon, pilot brewing system; and a 100-seat taproom with food service.

Owners Robyn Esser, Chris Esser, Bordon Hallowes and Allan Jackson intend to distribute Sanford Brewing Co.’s craft beer locally and across the Sunshine State.

The brewery received two grants from the city of Sanford to support the interior and exterior renovation of the 85-year-old building on the corner of Sanford Avenue and Fourth Street.

The Sanford Brewing Co. joins Central Florida’s growing list of breweries, including Orlando Brewing Co., Cask & Larder in Winter Park, The Hourglass Brewery in Longwood, Crooked Can Brewing Co. in Winter Garden, the Winter Park Brewing Co., Ten 10 Brewing in Orlando and Red Cypress Brewery in Winter Springs.

Brewery news Canada, NB: Gray Stone Brewing aiming at spring opening in Fredericton

Gray Stone Brewing has secured a location at 221 King Street – just a couple of blocks from the Picaroons Brewtique – and plans to open this spring with a focus on American-style ales.

Brewery news USA, VA: Chesapeake Brewing Company to open in Annapolis next month
Chesapeake Brewing Company plans to bring its Eastern Shore fare and beers to Annapolis next month, CapitalGazette.com reported on January 7.

On Feb. 9 — Fat Tuesday — Carolyn and David Marquis will open their restaurant and brewery at 114 West St., the site of the former Crush Winehouse. They have an existing operation in Crisfield in Somerset County, but have temporarily closed it while they get their Annapolis venture off the ground.

The upcoming site will offer a menu that includes stout burgers, crab cakes and lamb chops, as well as beers from Eastern Shore breweries. Since they will be within the Annapolis Arts and Entertainment District, each month they will host a forum devoted to the arts. Drink specials will also be offered to U.S. Naval Academy alumni because David Marquis is a 1985 graduate. Their Beat Army Golden Lager had already been selling here.

Chesapeake Brewing has been in Crisfield for seven years and the couple has long been looking to expand to a second location. They talked to officials in St. Mary's and Calvert counties, as well as looking at potential sites in Florida and South Carolina. They didn't think they could afford Annapolis, but then were able to ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Muskoka Brewery planning to launch craft distillery
Ontario beer news blog What’s Brewin’ reports that Muskoka Brewery is getting set to start up a small-scale distillery to create craft spirits, although it will be a while yet until they’re made available to the public.

According to brewery president Gary McMullen, the “passion project” has been in the works for three years, and a still was obtained late last year. “The Muskoka team is thirsty for knowledge and this is an opportunity for our team to learn, collaborate and develop new skills and talents,” he says.

Given the experimental nature of the project, McMullen doesn’t anticipate releasing any spirits for sale this year. “Right now this is a fun journey for us,” he tells What’s Brewin’. “It’s a chance for us to venture off the beaten path, have fun and try something new. We don’t have any plans for what we will distil. We’ll just see what we like and go from there.”

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Budejovicky Budvar’s production and exports reach record high in 2015
Czech state-owned brewery Budejovicky Budvar, which has been fighting a long legal battle with U.S. beer giant Anheuser-Busch over the use of the "Budweiser" brand, says its output and exports reached a record in 2015, WRAL.com reported on January 7.

Budejovicky Budvar NP said its exports rose 10.5 percent to 898,000 hectolitres (23.72 million gallons) of beer, the best result in the brewer's 120-year history.

Budvar exported to 73 countries last year, three more than the previous year. Overall output reached 1.6 million hectolitres (42.27 million gallons), up 10 percent from 2014.

Profit figures from the brewery are due in late April.

Both Budvar and Anheuser-Busch — which was taken over by Belgian brewer InBev in 2008 to form AB InBev — claim exclusive right to the Budweiser name.

Brewery news Australia: Craft beer industry showing no sign of slowing
Australia's beer tastes have been gradually shifting towards craft beers produced by small breweries, and with the industry showing no sign of slowing, the beer landscape is undergoing significant change, ABC Local reported on January 7.

Wander into any big city pub or bottle-o and you will notice the range of beer is no longer a line-up of the usual suspects.

Sometimes, the craft beer range is bigger than mainstream varieties.

It is a sign Australia's beer tastes are changing, and just as consumers have become more aware of where their fresh produce comes from, so has their interest in the origins of their beer increased.

"There is a keen interest in supporting local businesses and small industries to see it grow so we have something interesting and viable in Australia, and not just keep drinking the same beers over and over," Wollongong craft beer brewer Phil O'Shea said.

"A lot of craft beers produced are only produced once, so seeking them out is a fun and interesting thing to do."

According to a survey by mobile payment app Clipp, craft beer is a juggernaut for people in their 20s and 30s, but is not as popular among older drinkers.

Their data found craft beer sales accounted ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: UK beer giants under fire over planned price rises
The death of the pint could be a step closer after the UK breweries came under fire over planned New Year price rises, BT reported on January 7.

Two breweries - Molson Coors, makers of Carling, and Guinness giant Diageo - have revealed their intention to hike the price of a pint.

Leading industry figures have attacked the new plans.

“Grain and barley prices have halved since 2012, fuel is at its lowest price for years, meaning delivery costs must have been reduced,” Paul Wigham, chief executive of pub group All Out Bars, told The Publican’s Morning Advertiser.

“There’s no wage inflation. I don’t understand how prices can be going up.”

Tim Bird, who runs the Cheshire Cat Pub Company, warned in December that “savvy” customers were already questioning prices.

“If brewers put their prices up - outside a duty increase - then where I can, I will stop selling those brands and move to more competitive alternatives - and I would ask other businesses to do the same,” he said.

“These annual increases are becoming almost the norm.

“Every year, there seems to be a reason for not holding prices or dropping them.”

Defending their plans, Molson Coors said: “The increase is due to rising costs.”
