About the richness of hard resins
ABSTRACT
So far hard resins are still considered to have no
brewing value. And until recently we could only
speculate what the exact components in hard resins
are. In this extensive research project this German
Research team has identified numerous components
of the epsilon-fraction of hops, which is a part of the
hard resins, by means of UV/vis, LC-TOF-MS, and
1D/2D-NMR studies as well as synthetic experiments
and sensory guided fractionation. Besides a series of
literature known xanthohumol derivatives, multifidol
glucosides, flavon-3-on glycosides, and p-coumaric
acid esters, a total of 11 bitter tastants are reported
for the first time with threshold values of 5 -
198 mol/l. These compounds were shown to add to
the total bitterness in beers. Furthermore using the
epsilon-fraction as the sole hop addition,
demonstrated the possibility to produce beverages
strongly enriched with prenylated hop flavonoids.

Diageo PLC said it is overhauling its North American marketing operations and putting more emphasis on consumer research as it looks to reverse weak sales in its largest market, The Wall Street Journal reported on November 12.
The British-based liquor company has lost market share in the U.S. as it struggles with brands like Smirnoff and Captain Morgan. It recently installed Deirdre Mahlan, its former chief financial officer, as the head of its North American business and charged her with turning it around.
Following an investor conference in New York on November 11, Ms. Mahlan said Diageo was restructuring and investing in marketing because it came “to rely perhaps too heavily” on its U.S. distribution network and hadn’t “devoted enough resources to consumer insights.”
She said the company is building several new marketing functions, including an insights team that will be dedicated to analysing consumer trends. The division is designed to address shifting consumer interests in the U.S. where once-red-hot categories like flavored vodka have fizzled while bourbon has taken off.

India: Combined entity of SABMiller and AB InBev could put up strong fight against competitors in India

Belgian-Brazilian brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev on November 11 announced the final terms of its $ 107-billion takeover of SABMiller, its British-South African rival. The coming together of the two brewing majors will make what analysts say a "truly global beer company".
More importantly, AB InBev, the world's largest brewer, gets access to emerging markets through the deal. SABMiller, the world's second-largest beer company, gets 35% of its revenues from Latin America and 34% from Africa, respectively.
As per a report by Business Standard, in India, SABMiller, with brands such as Haywards 5000 and Knockout, is ranked number two in the pecking order of beer companies, after Heineken-backed United Breweries. Its estimated market share, according to industry sources, is around 25-27%. UB, on the other hand, has a market share of around 51-52%, while Carlsberg, the third-ranked brewer in India, has a share of around 15%.
According to analysts, the combined entity of SABMiller and AB InBev could put up a strong fight against competitors such as UB and Carlsberg. The latter, a Danish major, which entered India in 2007, has grown quickly on the back of a portfolio of strong beer brands such as Palone 8, Tuborg Strong and Carlsberg Elephant.

Finland: Number of breweries doubles since 2008
|
A craft beer revolution is a-brewin' in Finland – at least based on the rate at which microbreweries are popping up, the Helsinki Times reported on November 12.
The number of breweries in the country has doubled in no more than six years – from 25 in 2008 to 49 in 2014. The vast majority of the breweries, a total of 46, are microbreweries, indicate statistics released by the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira).
A similar trend is observable in the European Union. The Brewers of Europe reveals in its annual report that the number of breweries in the European Union grew two-fold between 2009 and 2014. Yet, breweries in Finland provide employment to 500 fewer people than in 2009, according to the report.
The jobs have disappeared largely from major breweries, says Elina Ussa, the managing director at the Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry. “The increase in the number of microbreweries hasn't been enough to compensate for the lost jobs because microbreweries typically only employ one to two people,” she explains.
Another curious trend is the apparent decline in beer consumption.

India: Vijay Mallya about to step down as chairman of United Spirits - reports
|
Vijay Mallya is about to step down as chairman of Diageo-controlled United Spirits before what could be an explosive annual meeting on November 24, reports from India claim.
The reports say that he is in the final stages of negotiation to sell to Diageo his remaining 5% stake in the company for a premium to the current market price, which itself rose by almost 5% in Bombay on the rumours. As part of the transaction, the reports say, Mallya would also step down as chairman and sever his final links with USL before the annual meeting.
Mallya’s aides have denied the reports and the Bombay Stock Exchange has asked for clarification.
The flamboyant Mallya inherited control of USL from his late father. It became the biggest player in the market, controlling more than 40% of all spirits sales in India on the back of its close association with United Breweries, where Mallya remains the main shareholder.

World: Battle for Budweiser name not over yet

Anheuser-Busch InBev may have finalised its $107 bln marriage proposal to SABMiller, but the giant brewer has never stopped thinking about the one that got away, Business Day Live reported on November 12.
In Ceske Budejovice, a town of 93,000 nestled among the rolling hills of the southern Czech Republic, there’s a state-owned brewery called Budejovicky Budvar. Given that the town is called Budweis in the native German of most of its residents in the 19th century, the company’s beer is often known as Budweiser.
That name has obvious appeal to the makers of the top-selling American beer, now controlled by InBev. For more than a century, the two sides have engaged in a legal tussle over the rights to the name, and at various times over the past couple of decades the Americans have sought to buy the Czech brewer. Currently, Budvar says there are active court battles in about a dozen countries, with simmering disputes in another 25 or so.
"The lawsuits are exhausting in terms of both time and money," says Jiri Bocek, the Czech brewer’s CEO since 1991, who keeps a half-dozen bottles of American Budweiser on display in his office as a reminder of the dispute.
