Scientific Digest

About the richness of hard resins

ABSTRACT
So far hard resins are still considered to have no brewing value. And until recently we could only speculate what the exact components in hard resins are. In this extensive research project this German Research team has identified numerous components of the epsilon-fraction of hops, which is a part of the hard resins, by means of UV/vis, LC-TOF-MS, and 1D/2D-NMR studies as well as synthetic experiments and sensory guided fractionation. Besides a series of literature known xanthohumol derivatives, multifidol glucosides, flavon-3-on glycosides, and p-coumaric acid esters, a total of 11 bitter tastants are reported for the first time with threshold values of 5 - 198 mol/l. These compounds were shown to add to the total bitterness in beers. Furthermore using the epsilon-fraction as the sole hop addition, demonstrated the possibility to produce beverages strongly enriched with prenylated hop flavonoids.

Brewery news New Zealand: Lower alcohol beer sales expected to keep growing
Lower alcohol beer sales are expected to reach record numbers this summer in New Zealand, thanks to changing consumer habits, tougher drink driving laws and new products, New Zealand Herald reported on November 8.

DB Breweries managing director Andy Routley said lower alcohol or light beer made up around 24 per cent of total beer sales in Australian supermarkets compared with around 5 per cent in New Zealand, however this had risen from just 1 per cent two years ago.

With a growing range of light beers available, Routley said the category would continue to grow.

"It's a very interesting development in how New Zealand consumes beer and it is definitely going to continue," Routley said.

"Whether it gets to the 23 or 24 per cent mark like in Australia remains to be seen - these things do take time but it is heading that way," he said.

Following the introduction of new legislation last December, which dropped the legal blood alcohol limit from 80mg to 50mg per millilitre of blood, light beer sales almost doubled.

It is now the second fastest growth category behind craft beer.

A recent survey by Hospitality New Zealand showed around 80 per cent of hospitality venues reported a drop in sales ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Tax increase forces Ambev to close Rio Grande do Norte brewery
Brazil’s No. 1 beer maker Ambev announced on November 6 it will be closing its brewery in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Isto E Dinheiro reported.

According to the company, the decision was caused by a 29% increase in the local ICMS taxes on beer and an 18% increase in the ICMS taxes on soft drinks.

Imposto Sobre Operações Relativas à Circulação de Mercadorias e Serviços de Transporte Interestadual de Intermunicipal e de Comunicações is a value-added tax on sales and services and applies to the movement of goods, transportation and communication services, and to the supplying of any goods.

In an official release, Ambev said the operations will be shut up gradually by the end of this year. 300 jobs are expected to be lost at the plant and the closure will affect an estimated 15 thousand jobs in related industries.

Brewery news Zimbabwe: SABMiller’s Delta Corp. to cut costs after decline in six months volumes
SABMiller's Zimbabwean affiliate Delta Corp plans to cut costs and reduce the price of some products after reporting a decline in beer and soft drink sales, the company said on November 11.

Delta, which is 38 percent owned by SABMiller, reported lager beer volumes fell 2 percent in the six months to September while volumes of the cheaper sorghum beer and soft drinks declined 10 and 15 percent respectively.

SABMiller received a $100 billion-plus takeover offer from the world biggest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev on November 11. AB InBev is hoping SABMiller will give it a foothold in growing African markets.

Delta, which has already cut the price of lager beer, plans to reduce the price of soft drinks after sales were hit by competition from cheaper imports and weaker demand, chief executive Pearson Govero said.

The company's total revenue for the period decreased 8 percent to $269 million. Profit fell to $36 million, down from $45 million last year.

Govero said power cuts, water shortages, higher taxes and a stronger dollar made it difficult for Delta to compete with imports from Zambia and South Africa.
