Cambodia: Supplies of Heineken beer drying up in Cambodia
|
Cambodia’s Heineken lovers are feeling a bit parched as a months-long dispute between the Dutch beer’s distributors dries up supply of the amber lager in the kingdom, Bangkok Post reported on May 26.
The Phnom Penh Post reported on May 25 that bars, hotels and supermarket all have seen their Heineken taps go dry with neither Cambodia Brewery Limited, the beer's exclusive distributor, and Attwood Import Export, its previous producer, unable to explain the shortage or predict when it will end.
Attwood, which had brewed, bottled and distributed Heineken under licence since 1994, saw its contract expire in December and distribution rights went to CBL, which has been progressively bought out by Heineken Asia-Pacific Export.
Atwood raised such a fuss over the loss of its lucrative contract in January that the Commerce Ministry ordered both firms to work out a deal. That hasn't happened.
CBL on May 25 wasn't saying much on the matter, disclosing only that the shortage has been acute for about a month and that it was "working with the relevant stakeholders and the former distributor" to bring the beer back, the Post quoted the firm as saying.
So while Heineken markets itself as the beer that "refreshes the parts other beers

Poland: Brewery near Kraków to open after over 70 years
|
Browar Tenczynek, near the southern city of Kraków in Poland, is to start brewing beer after over 70 years, Radio Poland reported on May 25.
The move comes after the brewery’s listed buildings were purchased and renovated by Browary Regionalne Jakubiak, which owns brewing facilities in Ciechanów, Lwówek Śląski and Bojanów.
Marek Jakubiak, CEO of Browary Regionalne, said the company bought the complex from bankruptcy trustees in May 2014 for over PLN 3 million. The brewery site was formerly used as a juice factory.
The estimated cost of renovations stand at PLN 12 million, with Jakubiak saying that “the brewery has already started production”.
Jakubiak said that a number of new brewing facilities had been installed, adding that during renovation works, a number of original architectural features which had been installed by Count Adam Potocki when he expanded the brewery in the 19th century had been restored.
“Traditional brewing methods still hold their ground today,” Jakubiak said, adding that the brewery is initially set to produce some 55-60 thousand hectolitres of beer annually, with production set to double in the future. Tenczynek is set to produce local beers, along with a line of lager.
The brewery currently employs 20 people, although that number may rise if

Russia: Russia proposes new curbs on wheat shipments
|
Russia proposed new curbs on wheat shipments only 10 days after formally ending a previous levy, saying it needs to protect livestock farmers from rising feed costs, Bloomberg reported on May 25.
The tax may apply from July 1, the start of the 2015-16 marketing season, if it’s approved by the Cabinet, Agriculture Ministry spokeswoman Yekaterina Popova said. It would be at least 1 rouble a metric ton and may be higher if contract prices rise above 11,000 roubles ($220) a ton.
Russian wheat prices should be limited to no more than that level in order to protect the country’s animal-breeding industry, Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachev said May 15. Prices for next season’s crop rose 2.7 percent to $190 a ton in the week to May 18, according to data from Moscow-based grains carrier ZAO Rusagrotrans.
The proposed 11,000-rouble threshold is “a very low level to trigger a tax,” said Arkady Zlochevsky, president of the Russian Grain Union, a Moscow-based industry lobby group.
Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on May 15 ended the previous tax a month-and-a-half earlier than planned after the country’s inflation slowed, easing concern over soaring bread costs.
Speculation that more wheat would enter the market after the tax was removed contributed to
