Shares of Constellation Brands hit new highs last week on the heels of a strong fourth quarter earnings report. Despite the short rally, shares ended the week down 5% and gave back most of their gains, Seeking Alpha reported on April 20.
The fourth quarter continued the growth for Constellation Brands in the beer segment. In fact, the company reported it gained market share in 48 of the 50 U.S. states. The company's Corona Extra remains the number one imported beer brand. In fiscal 2015, Constellation shipped more than 105 million cases of Corona Extra. A telling stat for investors is the fact that Corona Extra was the only top five beer brand in the U.S. to see growth last year. The beer could continue to see further gains in 2016 with Constellation planning increased national television advertising.
Beyond advertising, the growth for Corona Extra is coming from cans. From the earnings call, "Most importantly, fiscal 2016 will represent the year of the can for Corona Extra. Indonesia: PT Multi Bintang Indonesia in talks with government over new ban on alcohol sales in minimarts

PT Multi Bintang Indonesia Tbk is in talks with the government over a new ban on alcohol sales at minimarts and a planned 40 million euros (RM155 million) investment hinges on regulatory certainty, the brewer's top executive was quoted as saying by The Malaysian Insider on April 20.
Multi Bintang, majority-owned by Dutch brewer Heineken, had previously allocated the money over the next three years to raise its production capacity, president director Michael Chin said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Jakarta. Multi Bintang has two breweries and one plant producing non-alcoholic beverages in Indonesia.
A regulation banning the sale of alcoholic drinks at minimarts took effect in Southeast Asia's largest economy on April 16, though they will still be sold at supermarkets, hotels, bars and restaurants.
"Indonesia has been very liberal in selling alcoholic drinks," Chief Economics Minister Sofyan Djalil told reporters on April 20. "We are looking at how we can control the distribution in mini-markets."
Sales of beer with alcohol content of less than 5 percent at minimarts typically make up around 15% of annual sales in the industry, Multi Bintang's Chin said.

India: Mahou India launches Mahou 5 Star across the country
|
Mahou India, the first subsidiary of Spanish brewing major, Mahou San Miguel to be established outside Spain, has strengthened its position in the India market with the launch of Mahou 5 Star. This will also be the first ever Spanish beer to be made in India, a company release of April 21 stated.
By doing so, the company has not only increased its offering in the country but will start competing in new segments in the premium category. The beer, brewed at the Mahou India brewery located in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, is already available to consumers in different states across India and is said to be receiving good initial acceptance.
“This launch represents a further step in our consolidation in the Indian market, which is today a strategic and investment priority for the company due to its high growth potential. We are committed to India for the long term, and have built a strong local leadership team to take the Company forward,” said Erik d’Auchamp, Chief Executive Officer, Mahou India.

India: United Breweries to roll out strong Kingfisher Ultra Max beer
|
Kingfisher Ultra Max, a strong variant of Kingfisher Ultra beer and the costliest in the Kingfisher line, will be rolled out across India in a year in what its maker United Breweries calls its most aggressive launch in five years, Livemint reported on April 21.
United Breweries, which sells more than half of all the beer sold in India, is trying to fend off rivals such as SABMiller and AB InBev that have flooded the market with expensive versions of strong beer, the most popular among the country’s beer drinkers.
“This is the most aggressive launch done by United Breweries in over five years,” Samar Singh Sheikhawat, senior vice-president, marketing, said in an interview on April 17.
“This is the brand we are banking very heavily on.”
Sold in parts of Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Raigarh and Haryana, UB is cranking up all its 31 breweries across the country to produce Ultra Max, the latest from the Kingfisher stable.
“We’ve spent 1.2 times of what we spent on the launch of Heineken,” he added. To be sure, Heineken beer was launched in India in 2011. Heineken NV of Netherlands is the majority shareholder of United Breweries.

North Korea: Brewing among the few areas North Korea might be praised for
|
There are a few areas in which North Korea has an advantage over rival South Korea: underground resources and cheap labor are among them.
But some would argue that beer in the North is also much better than that produced in South Korea, Korea JoongAng Daily reported on April 22.
One defender of North Korean beer is Daniel Tudor, a former Seoul correspondent for The Economist.
In a 2012 article for the magazine, Tudor declares South Korean beer “boring” - so much so that even North Korean beer is more appealing. “Brewing remains just about the only useful activity at which North Korea beats the South,” he wrote. “The North’s Taedonggang Beer, made with equipment imported from Britain, tastes surprisingly good.”
The acknowledgement came as a slap in the face to South Korean beer producers. Though it’s a rather hard point to quantify - how and why, exactly, does North Korean beer taste better? - it tasted better to him.
With the weather warming now, an increasing number of North Koreans are lining up to drink after work. One of their favorite domestic brands is Taedonggang, into which late leader Kim Jong-il put particular care, making it one of the country’s best.

UK: Molson Coors’ Carling beer becomes Scotland’s number two brand by volume

The head of Molson Coors in Scotland has underlined the brewer's ambition to shake up the beer scene north of the Border after its Carling brand rose to command its biggest ever share of the Scottish lager market, The Herald reported on April 20.
Carling, the UK's biggest selling lager, became Scotland's number two by volume after growing by 22 per cent in 2014, buoyed by growing customer numbers and increasing its rate of sale in outlets.
It was the only top five standard lager to grow in a market which declined by two per cent, climbing to take a 8.7 per cent of total lager market in Scotland, data by industry analyst CGA found.
Carling's rise up the lager charts has come more than a decade after its high-profile launch into the market as shirt sponsor of Rangers and Celtic.
It underlines the continuing thirst for mainstream lager among drinkers in Scotland, in spite of the burgeoning craft beer movement.
Hugo Mills, the executive hired from Gruppo Campari to head Molson Coors in Scotland a year ago, said the brand's heavyweight push into Scotland had given it a "high awareness" among drinkers.

China: China's COFCO planning to list within 3-5 years
|
China's COFCO, the state-run grain trading company, is planning to list within three to five years, a move that would catapult it into the select stable of companies dominating global agricultural trade, Reuters reported on April 21.
In just over a year, COFCO has invested $2.8 billion to transform itself from a procurement operation into a global agricultural trader, via joint ventures with Noble Group Ltd's agribusiness and Dutch grain trader Nidera, after taking substantial stakes in the companies.
"This should be not a Chinese, but a global company...the IPO will help us to achieve this standard," COFCO Chairman Ning Gaoning said at the FT Commodities Global Summit.
Ning told Reuters COFCO's plan would be to list all of COFCO's, Noble's, and Nidera's agricultural assets together.
Its overall objective would likely be to rival the "ABCD" quartet of companies - Archer Daniels Midland, Bunge, Cargill and Louis Dreyfus - that dominate agricultural commodity trading.
"After the integration with Noble Agri I think COFCO will invest again in other companies," Ning said.
"That is a place you cannot ignore," he said when asked if COFCO could expand in North American markets.

The Netherlands & the UK: Some Dutch farmers start growing barley for Scottish whisky industry
|
Some 30 Dutch farmers in the northern provinces of Groningen and Friesland have turned over some of their land to grow barley for the Scottish whisky industry, broadcaster Nos reported on April 18.
The worldwide growth in whisky consumption has forced Scottish distilleries to look for alternative sources of barley and the clay soil in the north of the country is ideal for growing the crop.
Now a group of farmers in the Netherlands have agreed to grow barley for the Scots – under the supervision of Agrifirm, a cooperative which specialises in growing grain.
Some 30 farmers have signed up for the project. Malting barley for whisky generates 10% more in income than barley for the beer industry.
Ate Bijlsma, a farmer in the Frisian village of Firdgum, says he welcomes the challenge. ‘We have to be innovative,’ he told Nos. ‘At the moment, there is no added value in it for us, but perhaps there will be, if the Scots are enthusiastic about our growing methods and our product.’
