Hops-raspberries...where is the difference?

ABSTRACT
To solve the mystery of hop aroma it is helpful to look into the research of other fermented beverages. Korean researchers investigated the aroma profile of raspberry wines fermented with different yeast strains. They were able to identify aroma components as sensorily important, as we know well from the hops, e.g. linalool, citronellol, terpineol and different esters. Not surprisingly they found that the choice of yeast strain has a big flavor impact on the resulting wine. So in case you run out of hops, take some raspberries for compensation!

Ontario announced on April 16th it will allow beer to be sold in hundreds of grocery stores. Here's how alcohol is sold in other Canadian provinces, CityNews reported on the same day.

British Columbia: Beer, wine and spirits are sold in provincially owned and private liquor stores. Craft beer can be purchased at the brewery.

Alberta: Beer, wine and spirits are sold in privately owned liquor stores.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Ontario changes legislation to allow beer sales in supermarkets
Premier Kathleen Wynne has announced the most sweeping reforms of beer sales in the Ontario’s history, OurWindsor.ca reported on April 17th.

Beer will soon be sold in up to 450 supermarkets with Ontario drinkers guaranteed the lowest prices in Canada, says Premier Kathleen Wynne.

In the most sweeping reforms of beer sales in the province’s history, the privately owned Beer Store monopoly will also be revamped to increase access to consumers for Ontario’s burgeoning craft brewing industry and bring in an additional C$100 million annually to the treasury.

The radical change to beer sales comes after an ongoing investigation by the Star.

Last December, the Star exposed a deal between the Beer Store and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, lobbying and political donations by the big foreign-owned brewers that control the 448-outlet chain, among other revelations.

Under the new measures, beer prices will be set so they are the same at supermarkets, the 651-outlet LCBO, and the Beer Store.

“Ontario consumers will continue to pay prices for their beer that are at or below the lowest prices in Canada,” the government emphasized in a statement.

However, a new levy will eventually add C$1 to the cost of a 24-pack that currently retails for about C$34 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Florida Senate unanimously passes beer 64-ounce growler bill
A bill to help Florida's craft brewing industry and allow sales of popular 64-ounce growlers of beer could soon head to the desk of Gov. Rick Scott, The News Service of Florida reported on April 14th.

The Florida Senate in Tallahassee unanimously passed the bill (SB 186) that deals with growlers on April 14th. It heads over to the House, which is working on a similar bill.

Under a separate law enacted before craft breweries became popular in Florida, beer can only be sold in containers up to a quart or a gallon or more.

The popular half-gallon growler has become a pawn in a battle over the complex laws regulating brewing and sale of beer. Similar legislation has been considered in previous years, but disputes in the brewing industry kept the bills from passing.

Brewery news USA, OK: Oklahoma’s new beer legislation passed on April 15th
Oklahoma took a huge step on April 15th when the Oklahoma State House passed both SB 424, a bill that would allow breweries to sell their own beer and SB 383, which would allow cold sales of beer in excess of 3.2 percent alcohol by weight to be sold in liquor, grocery and convenience stores.

The votes in the House for SB 424 were (66 for /19 against). The votes for SB 383 were (68 for /21 against).

It means they both will go to a conference and get the details hashed out. SB 424 would go to conference then come back to both the Senate and House for final votes, then if passed it would go to the Governor for her signature and 90 days after that it would be law.

SB 383 is different than SB 424. There are a lot of things that could change there. The cold beer legislation goes to conference to make changes, the bill's co-author, state Rep. Glen Mulready (R), said on the House floor. That action probably won’t happen until the next legislative session.

If it passes it will be in front of the people for a statewide vote most likely during the next presidential election.

Brewery news USA, TX: Zilker Brewing opens as an urban brewery with a Belgian flair in Austin
Zilker Brewing has finally opened on East Sixth Street in Austin after a few years of planning and permitting delays — and it’s exactly the sort of neighbourhood brewery that brothers Forrest and Patrick Clark and their longtime friend Marco Rodriguez had been envisioning, ever since one of their beers, the Marco IPA, took home a gold medal at their first homebrew competition, Austin360 reports on April 15th.

Zilker Brewing is in the thick of East Sixth’s bar scene, but it’s not the kind of place that packs in party-goers looking to slurp down beer after beer, making it a natural fit within the several blocks of the east side’s easygoing nightlife district.

The trio has emulated Zilker Brewing after many of the hundreds of other breweries they’ve visited around the country and Europe, an intentional move that will help to push Austin ever closer to the status of a big beer city like Portland, where every five or six blocks is a small urban brewery serving the immediate area around it.

“What we want to be, what we’ve seen on our travels to all these other places, what Austin doesn’t have a lot of is a neighbourhood brewery,” Forrest Clark said. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Urban Artifact brewery to open in Cincinnati
Urban Artifact - a new Cincinnati brewery - has announced that it will open on April 24th and start distributing its beers throughout Hamilton County a few days later, The Beer Blog reported on April 15th.

The brewery is located in a former Catholic church in Northside. It's the third brewery in Ohio to find a home in a church building. Father John's Brewing Co. in Bryan was the first and Taft's Ale House, which just opened in Cincinnati, was the second.

Urban Artifact has teamed up with Cavalier Distributing. “We are very pleased to have Cavalier as part of our team," co-founder Scott Hunter said in a prepared statement. "Their values as a company directly align with ours, and we believe we bring a unique product to their portfolio."

Brewery news USA, NM: A veteran New Mexican brewmaster to join Off-Kilter Brewing Co.
Mike Campbell, a veteran New Mexico brewer, is ready to open a new brewery in the Duke City, Albuquerque Journal reports on April 15th.

Mike Campbell, former Tractor brewmaster back when it ran in Los Lunas, will bring his nearly 20 years of professional brewing experience to Off-Kilter Brewing Co. Campbell will open in a 4,000-square-foot space near San Mateo and McLeod, at 4814 Hardware NE, in late summer.

Most recently Campbell has been brewing for Cazuela’s Mexican Grill in Rio Rancho, where his Beer for My Horses earned a bronze medal in the oatmeal stout category at the World Beer Cup for 2014.

Campbell said his specialties are English ales, IPAs and oatmeal stouts.

Brewery news USA, NY: Empire Brewing Company to expand in Cazenovia
Mother Nature has delayed the start of construction for the Empire Brewing Company's expansion. The popular downtown brewery and restaurant plans to build a bigger facility in Cazenovia, TWC News reported on April 16th.

Empire Brewing Company is a popular destination for food and beer in Syracuse's Armory Square. "Once we took Empire beer outside the walls of the brew pub which has been here about 20 years for distribution in New York City and in the Upstate. We saw there was a great market for it," said Empire Brewing Company Operations Director Nick Irvine.

That market brought them about 21 miles east to farmland in Cazenovia. That's where they will build another facility, a location that's ideal for a number of reasons.

"It is accessible to the centre of the state, to your major freeways. It's also just a wonderful community, very rich in agricultural history and it gives us the opportunity to focus on the farming aspect of brewing beer," said Irvine.

Empire wants to educate the public on how beer is made, but their confined space in the brew pub Downtown doesn't allow them to do that. Now this land in Cazenovia will not only give Empire the opportunity to tell, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC & FL: Birds Fly South brewery to open in Greer area
The South Carolina brew scene is getting another new player with the summertime arrival of the Birds Fly South brewery, Greenville Online reported on April 15th.

This brewery will be something altogether different, with a focus on open fermentation and European style saison farmhouse ales. To start, brewery founder Shawn Johnson will contract brew through Greenville’s Thomas Creek Brewery.

But Johnson is looking for space in Greer or northeast of Greenville. "We need that perfect space, old wood, bricks that goes hand in hand with what we will be doing" with beer.” Birds Fly South will also have a second presence in Tarpon Springs, Florida, through the Saint Somewhere Brewing Company, which Johnson described as his "beer daddy."

The idea is to brew the same beers in both South Carolina and Florida, using the same ingredients and processes. They will undoubtedly be a little different, given the climate and humidity in both locations, he said. Johnson has already been home brewing, and he will have his beers at the Community Tap Beer Festival April 25 during Greenville Craft Beer Week. Meanwhile, he's waiting on his federal brewing permit, and the first beers might be coming out of Thomas Creek in June, he ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain & India: Mahou-San Miguel to invest nearly Rs 120 crore in Indian business
Spain's largest brewer Mahou-San Miguel plans to invest nearly Rs 120 crore in India to market its eponymous brand along with local beer Dare Devil in an effort to make the country one of its largest markets globally, The Economic Times reported on April 17.

The company, which controls more than a third of Spanish beer market, entered India three years ago by acquiring 50 per cent stake in Arian Breweries. Last year, it acquired the remaining stake to set up its first subsidiary and distillery outside Spain.

"Once we started looking at our global expansion plans, India became an important factor," said Erik D'Auchamp, chief executive officer at Mahou India.

For Mahou-San Miguel, international markets contribute nearly 13 per cent to its annual revenues of 1.2 billion, or about Rs 7,950 crore. D'Auchamp said the company aims to scale that up to 20 per cent in the next five years. "India is a really an important part of that plan," he said. After a heady double-digit growth last decade, beer sales in India grew less than 3 per cent last fiscal, similar to several other consumer goods segments as shoppers cut back on discretionary spending.

Yet, several companies are ...More info on site
