Malt news World: United Malt CEO to retire
United Malt is on the hunt for a new chief executive as it tries to deal with the financial hangover from a severe drought in Canada that hit operations in North America, AFR reported on October 6.

Mark Palmquist is bowing out 2½ years after leaving the top job at GrainCorp as part of the demerger that created United Malt.

He announced his intention to retire on October 6, less than a week after United Malt closed the books on a difficult 2021-22, but intends to stay on until a replacement is found.

The company revealed a profit downgrade triggered by soaring costs in August and last month reached agreement with bankers to amend net debt to earnings covenants after being in breach.

United Malt has paused its search for a chief financial officer to replace Amy Spanik, who left in July, and for a chief commercial officer responsible for the sales and marketing operations pending the appointment of a new chief executive.

In the wake of the August profit downgrade, United Malt chairman Graham Bradley said the board with disappointed with the 2021-22 performance and outlook, and the business needed a “material reset”.

Speaking to The Australian Financial Review on Thursday, Mr Bradley said: “We ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Diageo shares slip on cautious outlook
Shares in Diageo slipped on October 6 as the market looked through a broadly solid trading update to focus on the drinks group's warnings about its outlook, Yahoo Finance reported.

Diageo CEO Ivan Menezes warned that he expects the business environment to stay "challenging", citing "ongoing volatility due to geopolitical uncertainty, a weakening of consumer spending power, inflationary pressures, and disruption related to COVID-19."

Even so, he said he was "confident" of the group's resilience and said it is "well positioned" to meet its medium-term targets of annual net sales growth between 5% and 7%, and organic operating profit growth of 6%-9% over the next three years.

Menezes added that the group, which makes Guinness, Johnnie Walker whisky, and Tanqueray gin, had made a good start to the fiscal year that started in July, seeing organic sales growth across all of its regions.

Morgan Stanley analysts said the update looked "reassuring,” adding that they have revised their earnings per share estimates some 3% higher to reflect the impact of the weaker pound.

Diageo stock nonetheless struggled to make headway on a mixed morning for U.K. stocks and slipped 0.5% by 06:00 ET (10:00 GMT) to be down 9% on the year to date.

Barley news Ukraine: Cosiderable flow of grain moved out of Ukraine since grain corridor operation opened
Although the situation could change rapidly due to geopolitical events, since the grain corridor operation was opened in Ukraine a consistent flow of grain has moved, RMI Analytics said in their early October report.

In October 1st alone, 11 vessels departed ports, including a reported 29 thousand tonnes of barley destined for Lybia. In total, since the re-opening 5.7 mln tonnes of agricultural products have been exported in 252 vessels, with most common destinations being across Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Markets remain ultra-sensitive to events in the Black Sea. Turkey released a tender at the beginning of October for 500 thousand tonnes of feed barley, shipment in October, November, and December 2022, adding some further bullishness to prices.

Barley news France: France begins winter wheat and barley sowing
French farmers had harvested 67% of this year's grain maize crop by Oct. 3, compared with 51% a week earlier and 6% by the same week last year, farm office FranceAgriMer said on October 7.

The harvest is 28 days ahead of last year's pace and 18 days ahead of the five-year average, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal crop report.

Harvesting started early in late August after an exceptionally hot and dry summer accelerated plant growth. The weather also stressed crops and is expected to lead to the smallest French maize harvest in three decades.

An estimated 41% of maize crops were in good or excellent condition last week, stable from the previous week to hold at their lowest level in FranceAgriMer data going back to 2011.

Sowing cereals for next year's harvest has begun, with 3% of the expected soft wheat area and 8% of the anticipated winter barley area drilled by Monday, October 3, FranceAgriMer said.

The sowing progress matched the level seen a year ago for both crops.

Barley news Ukraine: Ukrainian farmers complete the 2022 wheat and barley harvest
Ukrainian farmers have completed the 2022 wheat and barley harvests, threshing 19.2 million and 5.5 million tonnes respectively, the agriculture ministry said on October 7.

Farmers harvested 4.7 million hectares of wheat and the yield averaged 4.1 tonnes per hectares, the ministry said in a report.

They harvested 1.6 million hectares of barley with an average yield of 3.48 tonnes per hectare.

In 2021, Ukraine harvested 32.2 million tonnes of wheat and 9.4 million tonnes of barley and the ministry has said a fall in the output in 2022 was caused by hostilities in the country's eastern, northern and southern regions.

Ukraine sowed more than 6 million hectares of winter wheat for the 2022 harvest, but a large area was occupied during the invasion and only 4.7 million hectares were harvested in Ukrainian-controlled territory.

The ministry also said farms had harvested 400,000 tonnes of corn from 2.3% of the sown area with the yield of 4.17 tonnes.

Farmers also harvested 2.6 million tonnes of sunflower seeds from 28% of the area and 1.6 million tonnes of sugar beet from 19% of the sown area.

Barley news Ukraine: Winter grain sowing area unlikely to exceed 2 mln ha
Ukraine's winter grain sowing area for the 2023 harvest will unlikely exceed 2 million hectares and the harvest could fall by at least 50%, the head of a large Ukrainian agriculture company was quoted as saying on October 6.

The pace of sowing winter wheat in Ukraine for the 2023 harvest is three times lower than last year, according to data provided by the agriculture ministry this week.

Farms have sown 1.1 million hectares of winter wheat as of Oct. 3, or 27% of the expected area, compared with 3.1 million hectares sown at the same date in 2021, the data showed.

"It is unlikely that we will gain 2 million hectares (of winter grain sowing area)," Alex Lissitsa, CEO of IMC integrated agricultural business, was quoted by Interfax Ukraine as saying.

"The harvest of early grains (mostly wheat and barley) will be 50-70% less (in 2023 versus 2022). In fact, we will cover our own needs, but not everything will be so rosy with exports," he added.

Ukraine consumes around 7 million tonnes of wheat and up to 4 million tonnes of barley per season.

Lissitsa said that a lack of funds for the sowing remains a huge problem for farmers in a situation where ...More info on site
