USA, FL: Wulfaven Brewing Co. gearing up for its grand opening
|
Wulfaven Brewery, which markets itself as "Carrollwood's first microbrewery," is finally gearing up for its grand opening, cltampa.com reported on September 16.
The North Tampa brewery took to its Instagram page yesterday to deliver the big news that its grand opening is happening Oct. 15-16.
During its debut weekend next month, Wulfaven Brewing Co.—located at 10828 Perez Dr.—will be open from noon-10 p.m. on Saturday and noon-6 p.m. on Sunday. The soon-to-open craft brewery will update its new customers with its regular operating hours after next month's grand opening.
Wulfaven says it will brew everything from juicy and bitter IPAs to crisp and clean lagers and pilsners, although its debut tap list hasn't been released yet.
While Wulfaven is getting ready to open its doors for the first time in October, the microbrewery has already made a name for itself through various pop-ups, beer events and collaborations with other local breweries, like Palm Harbor's de Bine Brewing. Co. and Woven Water. One of Wulfaven's signature brews is its Mexican lager, complete with a "crispy mouth feel, aromas of lemon zest and a smooth malty finish."
It's upcoming tap room won't serve any food, but its websites states that resident food trucks will be on-site slinging

USA, IL: Smylie Brothers Brewing Company closes its Lakeview brewery
|
Smylie Brothers Brewing Company has closed its 10,000-square-foot brewery in Lakeview a year after it opened, the Block Club Chicago reported on September 20.
The restaurant and brewery, which still has a flagship location at 1615 Oak Ave. in downtown Evanston, closed for a final time Sept. 5, according to a note posted on its door.
“It is with deep regret that we inform you that Smylie Brothers Brewing Co. located here at 3827 N. Broadway has closed its doors permanently,” the sign reads. “It has been an absolute pleasure to serve the local community for the near 12 months that we were open, and we are so grateful for the support you have given us.”
Smylie Bros quietly opened its Lakeview location in September 2021. The restaurant and brewery is known for its Texas-style barbecue and wide-ranging beer menu. Owner Michael Smylie did not return a request for comment.
Smylie started the business about nine years ago in Evanston, and he told Block Club last year he’d worked for years to bring the business to Chicago.

USA, PA: Spring Hill Brewing closing down after four-plus years in business
|
Spring Hill Brewing, a tiny brewery in a former German American social club atop the North Side with a view of the building tops of Downtown Pittsburgh and beyond, has announced that, after four-plus years, it’s closing, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on September 21.
Friday, September 23 is the last day for the brewery, located way “off the beaten track” at 1958 Varley St., which gave both mapping apps and cars some fits.
The news was announced late last week via a social post, with thanks given, “for joining me at this beautiful, little weird hilltop brewery.”
Greg Kamerdze and his business partner Mike Seamans opened in July 2018 in the former abandoned Workingmen’s Beneficial Union building on Spring Hill, surrounded by residences and green space in a spot you had to want to go to.
Spring Hill used a small (2 barrel) system to brew mostly low-alcohol, Belgian-style brews — such as saisons and other “farmhouse ales” — and served them on the weekends in the more-than-a-century-old club. Regulars loved the hideaway, hidden-gem feel.

UK: Rising carbon dioxide prices put UK beer industry under threat
|
The UK beer industry is under threat, as rising carbon dioxide (CO2) prices could impact production - and even cause a shortage of the beverage ahead of the busy Christmas season, the Daily Record reported on September 17.
CO2 plays a crucial role in the beer-making process, from carbonation to packaging, meaning brewers are facing the pressure to meet costs.
Carbon Herald reports prices of the gas have currently peaked at £2,800 per tonne. Three months ago, producers were paying £250 per metric tonne of CO2.
The production of CO2 has been impacted partly due to rising wholesale gas prices. As the gas is a bi-product of fertiliser, the rising costs meant many fertiliser plants in the UK were forced to close.
Last month, US fertiliser group CF Industries - which produces about a third of this country's supply of CO2 - announced it would be shutting down its ammonia plant in the UK.
Ensus, which supplies 40%, has temporarily closed its bioethanol plant in Teesside in another blow to the beer industry still reeling from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, reports Wales Online.

Romania: Heineken to shut down its Constanta brewery
|
Global beer producer Heineken announced plans to close its plant in Constanta, eastern Romania, starting September 2023, the Romania Insider reported on September 21.
The production and packaging capacities of the factory will be transferred to the group’s other factories in Craiova, Miercurea Ciuc and Targu Mures.
Production at Heineken’s brewery in Constanta started in June 1970. The factory was privatized in 1991.
“We are proud of our tradition in brewing beer in Constanta, but the factory has been operating well below capacity for several years,” the company explains in a press statement.
The group pledged “to invest significantly in the three remaining factories to support our ambition for growth and sustainable development, maintaining a strong presence in the Romanian market and the communities where we operate.”

Japan & India: Kirin in talks to invest $70 mln in Indian craft beer maker Bira
|
Japanese beverages firm Kirin Holdings is in talks to invest $70 million in Indian craft beer maker Bira, four sources told Reuters, doubling down on the fast-expanding South Asian market at a time when it is facing pressure on growth at home.
Kirin, which first invested $30 million in Bira for an under 10% stake last year, is set to pump in the additional funds at an equity valuation of $450 million, the sources said. Negotiations between the Japanese company and Bira's owners are in the final stage, one of the sources said.
The latest deal talks come as Japan's major drinks makers are facing a steady decline in revenue from alcohol sales as the domestic population shrinks and younger people drink less than in previous decades, forcing the companies to expand overseas or foray into new markets.
Kirin's plan for additional investment in Bira comes even as the Japanese yen has fallen to 24-year lows, which is set to raise the cost of overseas acquisitions for local companies.
Started in 2015, Bira is one of India's most popular craft beer makers. It competes with international brands such as Carlsberg as well as Heineken-owned United Breweries in India's estimated $5 billion beer market.

Ukraine: Agriculture ministry maintains grain crop forecast
|
Ukraine expects a 2022 grain crop of 50-52 million tonnes, unchanged from the previous estimate and down from 86 million tonnes last year, the agriculture ministry said on September 19.
Deputy Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi also told a televised news conference that grain exports in September were expected to total 5.4 million to 5.5 million tonnes, up from 4.5 million tonnes in August.
Ukraine exported around 6 million tonnes a month before Russia launched its invasion on Feb. 24.
"The war has brought with it difficulties, but we see that farmers have coped with them," Vysotskyi said.
Farmers have already completed the 2022 wheat harvest, threshing around 19 million tonnes of the commodity in bunker weight, and about 5.5 million tonnes of barley, he said.
Ukraine, a major global producer and exporter of grain, harvested 32.2 million tonnes of wheat and 9.4 million tonnes of barley in 2021.
Ukraine's grain exports have slumped since the start of the war because its Black Sea ports, a key route for shipments, were shut, driving up global food prices and prompting fears of shortages in Africa and the Middle East.

India: Two new microbreweries given licences to open in Delhi
|
Delhiites who currently travel to Gurgaon or Noida for freshly brewed beer can now get it in Delhi itself. The Excise department has given two licences for microbreweries and draught beer in a Saket mall as well as in Central Delhi, the Indian Express reported on September 15.
According to officials, five entities have applied for microbrewery licences, of which two have been approved. The remaining three are also set to be approved soon.
In Saket, 10 microbreweries will open under the L-11 licence, and some are also expected to open in Connaught Place and other places from October 1.
“There were provisions for microbreweries and draught beer under the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 but they were not implemented as the revised terms and conditions under the new policy were not notified on time. However, under the old excise regime, we have approved terms and conditions and are allowing microbreweries to be set up in Delhi. We received five applications for microbreweries and two have been given permission. It takes about 15 days to set up a plant, so, hopefully, people will have fresh beer in Delhi from the first week of October,” said a senior Excise department official.
