Brewery news USA, TN: Tennessee Brew Works announces new Tennessee location
Tennessee Brew Works is an independently owned and operated craft brewery that opened in 2013 with a mission to create high quality craft beer that pays homage to the land, traditions, and culture of Tennessee. Tennessee Brew Works is currently located at 809 Ewing Ave. in Nashville and has a bar location at Nashville International Airport (BNA). Soon, it will be expanding its properties, the Craft Brewing Business reported on September 15.

Tennessee Brew Works recently announced the expansion of its brand with a new Tennessee location, Lenoir City Barrel House, boasting a second manufacturing facility and a community focused, family friendly taproom. Tennessee Brew Works’ Lenoir City Barrel House is projected to open spring 2024. Situated 30 minutes outside Knoxville, the city is informally known as the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains. The future home of Tennessee Brew Works is a 21,000-sq-ft former fire station located at 200 East Depot Street in the center of Lenoir City.

Lenoir City Barrel House’s primary focus will be brewing and sharing old world and contemporary mixed fermentation beer styles, fermented in a range of wood tanks, stainless steel vessels, and oak barrels. In addition, the brewery will showcase experimental, historical, and small batch ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Ever Grain Brewing Co. in process of opening new brewpub in Cumberland County
Ever Grain Brewing Co. in Hampden Township is brewing up a project in Cumberland County, PennLive.com reported on September 14.

Co-owner Norm Fromm confirmed the partners, who also own Brewhouse Grille in Lower Allen Township, are in the process of opening a yet-to-be named brewpub at 316 Bridge St. in New Cumberland.

The six-day a week operation will focus on wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches and salads with eventual plans to add on-site brewing.

“I live in New Cumberland and it’s a great town,” said Fromm, co-founder with Larry Dolan.

An opening date has not been announced. At this point, like many restaurant owners with projects in the pipeline, From said supply chain issues have delayed the opening. They are waiting on a delivery of storefront glass to install in the front of the building, which is torn apart.

“The supply chain is ridiculous. We’ve had this glass ordered for some time,” Fromm said, adding he calls his contractor weekly to check on the status.

Otherwise, he said the restaurant’s interior is pretty much complete, and with the extra time they are tinkering with additional decorative touches. They’ve renovated the exterior and interior including refinishing a large basement they hope to rent out to a tenant.

Fromm said they ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: 1812 Brewing Company enters into non-binding letter of intent to acquire a new York State regional brewery and brew pub
1812 Brewing Company, Inc. has announced that it has entered into a non-binding Letter of Intent to acquire the assets and business of a New York State regional brewery and brew pub. The terms, including the final purchase price and the release of the target’s name, are subject to mutually agreed upon non-disclosure agreements, the Globe Newswire reported on September 15.

Tom Scozzafava, the company’s Chairman and CEO, stated, “What I can say is both parties are excited about this potential transaction. Each would give the other new retail outlets to showcase the other’s products outside their own, respective market. “Furthermore,” Mr. Scozzafava continued, “on the hospitality side the combined companies would be far less seasonal, and 1812 Brewing Company would leverage its new brewing, bottling, and soon-to-be canning infrastructure to unlock growth and value with the target’s brands. If we can close this deal, it would be a win-win.”

The company recently announced that it had both finalized an equipment purchase agreement as well as secured private equipment financing to acquire a five-head can filling and labeling line from industry partners Wild Goose Filling and Ska Fabricating).

The company also recently announced that it has been awarded the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Skeeta Hawk Brewing already open in New Orleans
A military career might seem like an unlikely launchpad for starting a craft brewery – especially a career spent largely in the Middle East – but this is exactly the path followed by Aaron Merrill, founder and managing partner of Skeeta Hawk Brewing, Biz New Orleans reported on September 15.

That path has led to the recently-opened location next to the Lafitte Greenway, just riverside of North Broad Street. Merrill’s journey began in Portland, Oregon, one of the original incubators of the whole craft brewing scene and now home to some 140 taprooms and brewpubs. And it covered some interesting ground along the way.

“I was in the army for 29 years, primarily as a foreign area officer,” Merrill recounted. “Mostly I was a link to other militaries. My specialty was the Middle East.”

As much a diplomat as a soldier, Merrill quickly determined that in the largely non-drinking Arab nations in that zone, “I needed to brew beer to be successful. I taught myself how to home brew, and worked with American home brew groups in the region.”

This not only helped build relationships with other militaries, it created a variety of local connections as well. As Merrill’s reputation and contacts grew, he ...More info on site

Hops news USA, PA: Brewery in Philadelphia loses all its hop crop due to city crew mistake
A brewery in Philadelphia’s East Kensington neighborhood was outraged after they say a city crew cut down a legally grown hop crop grown annually for a seasonal beer, the Philadelphia Business Journal reported on September 15.

The Philadelphia Brewing Company makes a beer called "Harvest From the Hood" every year. The brewery said the hops they grow in an adjacent 18-by-70-foot lot on Frankford Avenue are an essential ingredient in that beer.

The owner said a Community Life Improvement Programs (CLIP) crew that maintains vacant lots in the city destroyed the plants on September 13. The crew apparently thought the plants were overgrown weeds.

Because all of the hops were destroyed, the brewery said the batch of that particular beer won't happen this year.

Brewery news USA, NY: Druthers Brewing Company delays opening of new Saratoga Springs location
Druthers Brewing Company announced they will not be opening Thursday, September 15 in Saratoga Springs as planned, because of a delay in the licensing process, The Daily Gazette reported.

Druthers Brewing Company announced they would not be opening on Thursday, September 15 on their Facebook and Instagram pages Monday, September 12. According to the announcement, they are waiting for one last license.

“We are wrapping up construction and attending to final details,’ the post read. “We are waiting on one last license to come through and then we are all set to open. We will keep everyone in the loop on our opening date. Unfortunately, we will not be able to open this Thursday as planned. Thank you for your support during this long process and for your patience as we take final steps to open our doors.”

The company responded to several comments and questions on its social media posts. According to the Druthers Brewing Company social media accounts, there is not a definite date yet as to when it will be opening.

The company did not immediately respond to requests for further comment in this story.

The new location is located at the corner of Southside Drive and Maxwell Drive.

Barley news Australia: July malting barley export up 80% versus June
Australia exported 94,404 tonnes of malting barley, 498,057t of feed barley and 242,400t of sorghum in July, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The barley figures are up 80 per cent from the June total on malting and 4pc on feed, while the sorghum total represents a 4pc drop over the month.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said July was a strong month for malting barley thanks to the return of demand from Mexico and Peru as well as Vietnam.

“The consistency of the Central and South American business is notable, and it will be interesting to watch if the Canadians can eat into this market with their improved production as we move into the Oct-Dec quarter,” Mr Roache said.

As with last year, when Canada’s drought fuelled export Feed barley shipments were strong for a period when Australian exports typically enter the key Black Sea and EU shipping window

“Our volumes are seemingly unaffected by the harvest pressure and export competition out of the Northern Hemisphere at this stage.

“We do note that the Ukrainians are shipping virtually no barley so far this season, with the majority of resources being focussed on corn to this point.”

Brewery news South Africa: Beer industry calls for considering different beer taxes to wine ahead of Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement
A war of the malt is brewing ahead of the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTPS) next month after South Africa’s beer industry has called on Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to consider taxing beer differently to wine in line with inflation-based excise duty increases, IOL reported on September 14.

This as the beer industry earlier this week said it would take another two years to recover from the economic hangover of the Covid-19 pandemic, which did immense damage in terms of sales, jobs and growth.

The Beer Association of South Africa (Basa), in its submission and presentation on the 2022 Draft Tax Bills to the Standing Committee on Finance (SCoF) in Parliament, also called for South African policy commitment on September 13 to a three-year inflation-based increase strategy.

Basa’s membership includes: The Craft Brewers Association of South Africa, Heineken South Africa and South African Breweries.

Basa explained that beer was taxed at an excise duty based on the litres of absolute alcohol (LAA) or alcohol by volume (ABV), while wine is taxed at a rate based on litres irrespective of the ABV, which makes the excise duty liability for wine to remain at R4.96 irrespective of the ABV.

ABV ranges between 4.5 percent and 14 ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Successes of Ukrainian army may improve forecasts for winter sowing area
The successes of the Ukrainian army, which has liberated a significant territory in the northeast and south of Ukraine, may improve the forecasts of the winter sowing area for the 2023 grain crop, a deputy agriculture minister said on September 14.

Ukrainian forces liberated most of the Kharkiv region and some areas in the south during successful counteroffensive actions in recent days.

Ukrainian farmers have already started winter sowing and the ministry says the sowing area could fall by 35% this year to around 4.7 million hectares due to the Russian invasion. Farms sow winter wheat, winter barley, rape and rye.

“Regarding the liberation of Ukrainian territories from occupation by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, we have reasonable optimism that this forecast of 4.7 million hectares will improve,” Markiyan Dmytrasevych said.

The ministry said on September 13 farms in almost all regions had started sowing winter wheat for the 2023 harvest, seeding 141,000 hectares, or 3.5% of the expected area.

Minister Mykola Solsky told Reuters last month that the winter wheat area could fall to 3.8 million hectares from 4.6 million a year earlier due to the Russian invasion.

Farmers had already sown 7,100 hectares of winter barley, or 1.1% of the expected area, and 5,400 ...More info on site

Brewery news Qatar: Budweiser promoting its alcohol-free lager at upcoming soccer World Cup
Budweiser is promoting its alcohol-free lager at the upcoming soccer World Cup in Qatar, balancing its role as the official beer of the event with the strict regulations on the sale and consumption of alcohol in the predominantly Muslim host nation, The Wall Street Journal reported on September 15.

Executives from Anheuser-Busch InBev SA, the brewer’s parent company, believe the restrictions on alcohol sales in the country provide it with an opportunity to encourage more people to try its alcohol-free Budweiser Zero, which will be on offer at stations around the tournament and inside soccer stadiums’ main bowls, where alcohol sales aren’t permitted.

“There will be millions of people watching the games, so it’s a sizable trial opportunity for sure,” said Marcel Marcondes, Anheuser-Busch InBev’s global chief marketing officer.

The company wants low-alcohol and no-alcohol beer products to make up at least 20% of its global beer volume by 2025. The current figure stands at 6.63%, according to a company report published in February.

Budweiser will provide its flagship alcoholic brand only at certain venues including at its “takeover” of the W Hotel in the capital of Doha, executives said. Alcohol isn’t illegal in Qatar but usually can only be purchased in a small ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Asahi’s Carlton & United Breweries releases new fruity beer range
Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), part of Asahi Beverages, has released a new beer range with fruity flavours called Sungazer and Empire, the Inside FMCG reported on September 16.

The new brews feature malted barley, hops, yeast and water and offers a lager-like finish on the palate. Flavours in the Sungazer range include Watermelon, Raspberry and Mango while Empire offers Strawberry & Lime and Orange & Mango.

The company says the beers are low in bitterness with “a subtle maltiness” and strong fruit flavours. The brands built on the beverage giant’s existing innovation, particularly with products like Carlton Zero.

CUB GM of marketing Nicole McMillan said Fruity Beer is a ground-breaking innovation that will help CUB and bottleshops keep pace with evolving consumer tastes.

“Drinkers have told us they love the tradition of enjoying a beer with mates but increasingly want sweeter flavours and low bitterness in their beverages.”

She added the brand is committed to growing the beer market in Australia and attracting a new demographic of beer lovers.

Though the brew is not traditional, McMillan said the brands’ other popular offerings such as Victoria Bitter and Carlton Draught “aren’t going anywhere”.

The new range is now on sale in major bottleshops in 300ml cans with ...More info on site

Brewery news Lithuania & Russia: Lithuanian beer still available Russia – brewers say without their knowledge
Lithuanian beer with a production date after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine is still available in the Russian market. According to producers, their beer is transported to Russia without their knowledge, lrt.lt reported on September 15.

Recently, activist Oleg Surajev published a video showing the beer of Lithuanian producer Volfas Engelman being loaded onto a truck with Russian plates.

After Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine at the end of February, Volfas Engelman said they would stop trading with the aggressor country. However, the company continues to ship its products to Russia, according to Surajev.

“During these five months of the war, brewers have been shipping [their products to Russia],” he told LRT RADIO.

“They have been shipping their products through third companies. I exposed Lukritma, one such company. It transported [to Russia] not only beer of Volfas Engelman but also of Kalnapilis, which was produced in Lithuania’s Panevėžys but destined for the Latvian market,” Surajev added.

Mantas Matukaitis, Volfas Engelman’s Marketing Manager, said he could not confirm the evidence gathered by Surajev regarding the export of the company’s products to Russia. According to him, the company has ceased its exports to the country in two phases.

“The first phase was at the beginning of ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Oktoberfest is back after two years of pandemic cancellations
Oktoberfest is back in Germany after two years of pandemic cancellations — the same bicep-challenging beer mugs, fat-dripping pork knuckles, pretzels the size of dinner plates, men in leather shorts and women in cleavage-baring traditional dresses, the Star Tribune reported on September 16.

But while brewers are more than glad to see the return of the Bavarian capital's sudsy tourist centerpiece, both they and visitors are under pressure from inflation in a way that could scarcely be imagined the last time it was held in 2019.

For one thing, the 1-liter (2-pint) mug of beer will cost between 12.60 and 13.80 euros ($12.84 and $14.07) this year, which is an increase of about 15% compared with 2019, according to the official Oktoberfest homepage.

The event opens at noon Saturday, September 17 when Munich's mayor taps the first keg and announces "O'zapft is," or "It's tapped" in Bavarian dialect.

For Germany's brewers, rising costs go much deeper than simply the price of a round at the festival's long wooden benches. They are facing higher prices all along their chain of production, from raw ingredients like barley and hops to finishing touches such as beer caps and packing material.

It's a mirror of the inflation running across ...More info on site
