Brewery news USA, MI: Useless Creatures Brewing Company holds grand opening in Three Rivers
Opening up a new brewery during one of the biggest events of the year in Three Rivers can be seen as a great way to get off the ground, the Three Rivers Commercial News reported on September 10.

But, for Evan Monroe, one of the owners of the new Useless Creatures Brewing Company, having their grand opening during HarmonyFest made him just a bit nervous, but said it all worked out in the end throughout a busy opening day.

“We had only been open three hours the day before as a soft opening, but it speaks to our team's skills and hard work that it went so smoothly,” Monroe said. “They all got a big thank you, and I expressed that multiple times. Everything went perfectly.”

Monroe, along with his brother Colin Monroe and his cousin Chase Berry, opened up the new brewery located at 41 N. Main St. on Sunday, Sept. 4 to positive feedback from the community. The brewery offers a wide selection of beers brewed in-house, as well as a small menu of curated bar food items.

The eight beers currently on tap to start include an “Imperial Pils,” an “amped-up German-style” pilsner; the “Taika Wheatiti,” a wheat ale brewed with ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Big Ridge Brewing Co. closes up shop in Vancouver
Just a couple of weeks after Green Leaf Brewing shut down in North Vancouver, another longstanding brewpub restaurant in the region has closed up shop, the Vancouver Is Awesome reported on September 13.

Big Ridge Brewing Co. in Surrey was one of the older craft breweries in the region, having opened in 1999 before the current boom in the industry.

Located in South Newton, the brewpub restaurant was one of the Mark James Group's outposts, which is also behind Yaletown Brewing in Vancouver, High Mountain Brewing Co. in Whistler, and the Flying Beaver Bar and Grill in Richmond.

In a poster taped to the front door of the brewery, the company announced Big Ridge had ceased operations as of Sept. 12. The related liquor store in the same strip mall was also closed.

"We thank you for your patronage as we close this chapter," reads the poster.

The brewery's Facebook and Instagram accounts have been deleted, and the brewery's page on the company's website is essentially empty with links to the other breweries, as well as the company's distilling companies.

Anyone with gift certificates to the brewery can redeem them at another Mark James Group location.

Brewery news Japan: Asahi to focus more strongly on canned beer and healthier innovation businesses
Asahi has highlighted plans to focus more strongly on its canned beer and healthier innovation businesses as it braces itself for cost pressures in Japan from October, Food Navigator Asia reported on September 13.

Asahi announced its H1FY2022 financial results earlier this month, reporting an increase of 11.4% year-on-year in revenue to hit JPY1.15tn (US$8.42bn) and a 1.9% increase in profit to hit JPY91bn (US$666mn).

Within its core APAC markets, Asahi Japan revenue grew 7.9% to JPY599.9bn (US$4.39bn) but profits grew just 0.1% to JPY42.8bn (US$313.2mn) whereas Oceania revenue grew 9.4% to JPY261.1bn (US$1.91bn) and profits grew 4% to JPY41.8bn (US$305.9mn).

The firm credited its positive results to its on-premise (40+% growth) and canned beer (26% growth) businesses in Japan, as well as craft beer (8% growth) in Australia, but acknowledged that in Australia price hikes had contributed towards profits in the region.

“There are still multiple cost increases affecting [Asahi’s production and supply chains] – across the group, the cost increase in the first half of the year has been just over JPY30bn (US$219.7mn) and we estimate that this is going to increase to approximately JPY80bn (US$585.9mn) for the entire year,” Asahi CEO and Representative Director Atsushi Katsuki told investors when announcing the ...More info on site

Brewery news EU: Energy crisis threatening companies from Belgian brewers to German tomato growers
The Belgian brewer of Delirium Tremens beer is facing a real risk of halting production for the first time in more than a century as Europe’s energy crisis creates unexpected ripple effects across the region, Bloomberg reported on September 13.

From German tomatoes to Swedish bread, Russia’s squeeze on gas supplies is starting to hit sectors well beyond utilities and energy-intensive industries. The spillover on food and drink supplies will likely intensify as temperatures drop and households require heating, forcing businesses and consumers into tough decisions.

Brewery Huyghe, located in the Belgian village of Melle, considered shutting production because of a 13-fold surge in the price of liquid carbon-dioxide, which it uses to make beers bubbly. It’s hoping a court, which is expected to rule on Wednesday, will thwart its supplier’s force majeure.

Alain De Laet, owner of the family-run company, said his CO2 inventories could run out this week and force a stoppage for the first time since 1906, unless deliveries from a temporary supplier come through.

“I believe it when I get it in the brewery,” he said.

The European Union is trying to stem the crisis caused by Russia’s gas cuts, which last year supplied about 40% of the bloc’s demand ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Sapporo to restart brewing Yebisu beer in Tokyo’s Ebisu district for the first time in 35 years
Sapporo Breweries Ltd. said on September 12 it will start brewing its flagship Yebisu beer at the brand's birthplace of Tokyo's Ebisu district for the first time in 35 years, nippon.com reported.

The beer company will set up around the end of 2023 Yebisu Brewery Tokyo, a facility that contains a brewery and a museum where customers can enjoy Yebisu beer while learning about the history of the popular brand.

Sapporo will invest about 1.3 billion yen ($9.1 million) for the facility to be built inside Yebisu Garden Place, where the company is headquartered.

The new brewery will have a production capacity of about 130 kiloliters of beer annually, and the company expects to have 200,000 annual visitors after the facility's opening.

Sapporo said its predecessor company had started to brew and sell what is now the Yebisu beer in Ebisu in 1890 but stopped production in 1988 following the factory's relocation.

Aside from the premium beer brand, Sapporo, which has its roots in the northern city of Sapporo, Hokkaido's capital, also produces its namesake brand Sapporo beer.

Hops news Russia: Russian brewers forced to seek domestic hops alternatives
Restrictions against Russia have disrupted local beer brewers' supplies of hops and equipment, forcing them to seek domestic alternatives as they strive to keep their range of beers flowing, three brewing companies told Reuters.

Supply chain disruptions, sanctions over Moscow's actions in Ukraine and some Western firms choosing to halt supplies to Russia have combined to reduce brewers' access to U.S. and European hops, but as foreign competitors vacate the market, some Russian firms see an opportunity.

Sergei Baranov, head of Russian brewing company Khmelyoff said they have used German hops for 15 years, but this year trialled hops from Russia's Chuvash Republic, a region around 585 km (365 miles) east of Moscow.

"In principle we are happy with the quality," Baranov said, adding they would order more.

He said logistics and payment problems meant Khmelyoff could not pay its partners in Germany directly, even though deliveries of hops have not been sanctioned.

Russia, which imports the vast majority of its hops from the likes of the United States, Germany and the Czech Republic, does not produce a wide enough variety of its own hops to brew more sophisticated types of beer, Vyacheslav Vetelev, founder of LaBEERint Brewery, told Reuters.

"We can't brew the same types ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Molson Coors Beverage Company confirms closure of National Brewery Centre in Burton Upon Trent
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has called for brewing artefacts to be “safeguarded” following the “devastating” announcement the UK’s only museum dedicated to brewery history will close later this year, the Morning Advertiser reported on September 14.

Molson Coors Beverage Company (MCBC) recently announced the closure of National Brewery Centre (NBC) in Burton Upon Trent, Staffordshire, in October, with plans to turn the venue into the company’s head offices.

CAMRA national director for real ale, cider and perry campaigns Gillian Hough said: “The planned closure of the National Brewery Centre in October will be a devastating loss not only to Burton upon Trent but also to the nation’s brewing history.

“As one of the largest brewers in the world, Molson Coors have a responsibility to safeguard historical and educational facilities under its care.

“It is extremely concerning Molson Coors is putting profits over protecting Burton’s place in global brewing history.

“CAMRA is urging Molson Coors to reverse their decision, invest in the Centre in its current location and ensure its collections are open and accessible to the public.

"[We] are poised ready to be part of a new campaign to save the National Brewery Centre and preserve the collections for generations to come.” ...More info on site

Brewery news India & Oman: Goa-based microbrewery Latambarcem Brewers enters Oman market
Goa-based microbrewery Latambarcem Brewers (LB Brewers) has announced its entry into Oman market with a plan to sell around 50,000 cases this fiscal year, the Newsdrum reported on September 13.

The craft brewer, set up in 2017, also makes non-alcoholic beverages such as premium iced-teas, kombucha and zero-sugar seltzers.

"We are entering into global markets to sell our craft beer. We have appointed a distributor in Oman for marketing of our premium craft beer brand Maka Di," said Ishan Varshnei, co-founder and CEO) of LB Brewers.

The demand for beer is huge in Oman, especially from NRI (Non Resident Indian) population, he said.

"We are targeting to sell 50,000 cases this financial year itself with an estimated revenue of Rs 2 crore," Varshnei said.

After studying the consumption patterns and taste profiles of Omani population, the company is launching two new specially curated craft beers for the Oman market.

"Being a bespoke and premium craft beer brand based out of India, we are extremely inquisitive and excited to see the response that we can generate from a regulated and controlled alcohol market such as Oman. Considering our popularity in the Indian marketplace, we are expecting a tremendous initial response from the large Indian population residing in ...More info on site
