Canada, ON: Waterloo Brewing reports C$29.5 mln of net revenue for Q2 of fiscal 2023
|
Waterloo Brewing Ltd., Ontario's first craft brewery, announced on September 8 financial results for the second quarter of fiscal 2023 which ended on July 31, 2022. Waterloo Brewing reported EBITDA for the second quarter of fiscal 2023 of C$5.1 million, on net revenue of C$29.5 million.
Owner brand sales volume in the quarter grew by 1.4%, while the industry, as a whole, was down by 0.9%. Volumes of the domestic mainstream Laker brand increased by 9.3% versus the prior year, signalling trade-down behaviours within the category as a result of inflationary pressures. The company expects consumers to continue to trade-down, which will benefit the Laker brand, as they continue to feel inflationary pressures. LandShark® also grew by 7.2% which maintained the performance trend in the first quarter and significantly out paced the domestic premium category. Owner brands continued to gain market share at The Beer Store and grocery stores in Ontario.
A few large co-manufacturing customers that supply their own raw materials were impacted by ongoing supply chain delays in the quarter, which resulted in contract volumes either partially lost or shifted to upcoming months. Service revenue decreased by C$4.4 million in the quarter versus the prior representing 93.6%

USA, MD: Pickett Brewing Company officially opens its Pigtown space for business
|
From starting in a home garage to brewing in a 6,500-square feet taproom, Pickett Brewing Company has officially opened its new space for business in Pigtown, the Baltimore Fishbowl reported on September 8.
Jason Howard began home brewing in 2009 at his Lutherville home.
“When the garage door was open, people knew they could stop by, hang out with friends and neighbors, and have a great time,” co-owner Kate Conway said.
Howard always dreamed of starting a brewery based on the neighborhood vibe he created with his home brew. In 2018, he asked Conway for assistance with business planning, finance, and marketing, and from there their partnership grew.
In the heart of Pigtown, they found a location on Paca Street that “was being used for storage but had the bones for a brewery.” They knew it would make the perfect spot and decided to dive into brewery planning. By spring of 2022, the pair both left their careers to be full-time brewery owners and operators.
Because the planning stages took place during the pandemic, the development of the brewery and taproom “seemed to take forever,” Conway explained. “It was frustrating for sure but we persevered with determination, flexibility, and a good sense of

USA, OH: Honest Friend Brewing hoping to open in Columbus next year
|
In most cases, the art on a beer can or bottle label is seen simply as an extension of its packaging, a way to catch the consumer’s eye and sell a few more units.
But when Honest Friend Brewing opens next year on Columbus’ South Side, the ambitious new brewpub plans to turn that idea on its head. According to co-owner Chris Carter, the brewery will create an immersive world of returning cartoon characters, which will appear and reappear on labels and in the taproom space itself, 614NOW reported on September 8.
“Our mission centers around how art and beer can complement each other. We embrace this in our brand through a universe of cartoon characters,” he said. “Each season, the characters have new stories that will be in conversation with the beers we release and the corresponding labels and other art that fills our space. Our hope is that people will grow to love the characters as much as the beer.”
Carter, who has served as a brewer at Seventh Son for the last seven years, will operate the city’s newest brewery alongside fellow co-owners Will Gutmann, a practicing attorney with a passion for craft beer, and artist and designer Kayla Lewis,

USA, ND: New brewery being launched by six families in Jamestown
|
An idea shared among six families has led to the start of a brewery in Jamestown, NewsDakota.com reported on September 7.
Christian Cary, one of the founders of the new Drift Prairie Brewing Company, says things started picking up more than a year and a half ago.
Cary says the search included finding a building and equipment, which has started to come together when the group purchased the Jamestown Sun building.
Nick Bruns and his wife are also founders of the new brewery. He joined the venture when it came to finding a space to fill.
Bruns added now that they have the space, the group is discovering different things that need to be done before they’re ready to start brewing and operating.
He pointed out that they’re also hoping to make the brewery into a community meeting space, discussing food options and other drink options, but also making it a spot people can gather and converse or meet.
Bruns says having the mix of families involved allows for them to specialize in food with Emma Kleingartner, formerly with Emma Rosie’s Home Cooking, and brew master Anton Goss focused on creating different brews.
Cary added he’s excited about the possible partnerships that may come out of opening

USA, MO: Vine Street Brewing Co. to become Kansas City’s first Black-owned brewery
|
In one year, significant progress has been made at 2000 Vine. On the windows, Vine Street Brewing Co. is making its mark, KCTV5 reported on September 8.
Kansas City’s first Black-owned brewery planned to open earlier this year, but additional work is being done.
“As a historic building, we have discovered lots of things that had to get addressed and needed special inspections,” said Kemet Coleman, Co-Founder of Vine Street Brewing Co.
Having an unfinished building hasn’t stopped the team, which includes Elliot Ivory and Woodie Bonds, from growing their brand.
“We’re also collaborating with other breweries and creating different styles with them,” Coleman said.
In the meantime, their building is getting upgrades like new floors. That way, it’ll be in perfect shape for what’s to come.
The space will have two levels with a taproom on each floor. There will also be food provided by The Prospect KC, which is next door. Outside, in the back of the building, will be additional seating and a stage.
According to Coleman, incorporating music will embody the true essence of the 18th & Vine District.
“Music is going to be a huge part of the experience here at the brewery,” he said. “We’ll make sure that we live up to

USA, WA: Hopsteiner announces partnership with independent hop growers CLS Farms
|
Hopsteiner announced in August a new partnership with one of Washington’s independent hop growers. The company says that for the first time it has expanded some of its proprietary varieties to an outside grower, CLS Farms. It is the first agreement to give a grower full marketing, selling, and distributing rights for these four proprietary varieties: Sultana, Lotus, Calypso, and Altus.
For six generations, Hopsteiner has grown, bred, traded, and processed hops. It is a vertically integrated, international company that supplies hops and hop products to breweries around the world. Its proprietary varieties include Trident, Helios, Eureka, Calypso, LemonDrop, Lotus, Sultana, and others.
CLS Farms is a fifth-generation, independent hop grower in Moxee, Washington. It is now licensed to grow and market four of Hopsteiner’s proprietary hop varieties: Sultana, Lotus, Calypso, and Altus. This agreement is the first time Hopsteiner has expanded these varieties to an outside grower. The agreement with CLS Farms gives Hopsteiner the ability to expand its market reach and distribution of these varieties beginning with this coming crop year. For brewers, it expands access to these varieties.
“We are delighted to grow our relationship with CLS Farms as we expand our variety offerings,” said Will Roy, grower relations

USA, NY: Speckled Pig Brewing Company weeks away from grand opening
|
Just weeks away from its grand opening, Speckled Pig Brewing Company will offer patrons a taproom with in-house brewed beers, wood-fired pizza and “good vibes,” The Daily Gazette reported on September 8.
The business will be holding a soft opening for friends and family this week and will be holding its grand opening in a few weeks, the date will be announced soon said partner and assistant brewer Larry Heid. Speckled Pig Brewing’s Facebook page promises its grand opening is going to be “PIG.”
“Our partners and I had just been home brewing for a long time and just thought we’d take the next step into it,” Heid said.
The building, located at 11-13 Washington St., Ballston Spa, was formerly a dress factory and had been vacant for about 30 years.
The property was purchased by Heid’s partners Randy Elliott, his wife, Kelly Delaney-Elliott, and their son R.J. Elliott in May 2020 for $180,000. The Ballston Spa family had a brewing and wood-fired pizza business in mind.
“It’s completely renovated,” Heid said. “They’ve done an amazing job with the space. It used to be storage, like a warehouse space.”
The renovations started in December, Heid said.
“It took us twice as long as we had anticipated,” Heid

USA, FL: Myrtle Avenue Brewing already open in downtown Jacksonville
|
Myrtle Avenue Brewing with 11 craft beers on tap, rustic community tables plus a children's play area amid a plant-filled outdoor beer garden, invites friends, families and neighbors to gather together, relax and have a good time, the Florida Times-Union reported on September 8.
The community-focused brewpub recently opened at 633 N. Myrtle Ave. in the Jax Rail Yard Exchange retail and restaurant building at the heart of the Rail Yard District near downtown Jacksonville.
Myrtle Avenue Brewing fills the former Engine 15 Brewing production facility. Veteran craft brewer Sean Bielman co-founded Engine 15, which was among the first microbreweries in Jacksonville and Northeast Florida.
Bielman opened Myrtle Avenue Brewing on Aug. 14 in partnership with James Menker, owner and operations director of King Maker Brewing in Riverside.
Family-friendly and community-oriented is the focus for their new craft brewery, Bielman told the Times-Union.
"You're not coming out to get drunk here. You're coming out to be part of the community and have a couple of beers with friends. Let the kids play with their friends, have a bite to eat and go home on a Wednesday night," he said.
Myrtle Avenue is a mom-and-pop-style brewpub similar to the European model.

USA, NC: TRU Colors Brewing to close its doors this week
|
TRU Colors Brewing — a Wilmington-based brewery renowned for its mission to end gang violence by employing active, rival gang members — will close its doors this week, the Star News Online reported on September 7.
George Taylor, TRU Colors founder and chief executive officer, cited a lack of funds and local and national media as some of the primary challenges the brewery faced and, ultimately, couldn't overcome.
"To the TRU Colors team and all the others who were counting on our success, I am deeply sorry I let you down," Taylor said in a lengthy statement emailed to the StarNews on September 7. "TRU Colors is so much more than a startup or financial investment. It is a vision and a mission, that are critical to our future. What our team did mattered and what our team did worked, but we ran out of runway. The cost of change is high."
The announcement comes less than two weeks after the national magazine The New Yorker published an article examining the brewery and its mission.
TRU Colors was founded in 2017 on the belief that lack of economic opportunity fueled gang violence. Taylor brought rival gang members together to teach them life skills

Canada, BC: Green Leaf Brewing quietly closes its doors in Vancouver
|
A Lonsdale Quay staple and one of the North Shore’s first craft breweries is likely closing for good, Vancouver Is Awesome reported on September 7.
Without public warning or explanation, Green Leaf Brewing quietly closed its doors last Monday (Aug. 29) after almost nine years in operation, leaving many former patrons wondering why.
While the brewery and its ownership have been silent so far, Quay North president Taylor Mathiesen said he expects the brewery won’t be reopening.
“Green Leaf Brewing elected to close,” he said, adding that his company has been working with the long-term tenant to hopefully reopen.
The closure was sudden, with Brewery staff posting regularly on social media throughout August. On Google, the business’s listing is marked as “Permanently closed.”
“We don’t have alternative plans for the location because we weren’t planning for the space to be vacant,” Mathiesen told North Shore News. “It’s a spectacular space.”
Many people associate Green Leaf, which opened in late 2013, with helping to drive enthusiasm for the local craft beer scene, which is thriving in the nearby Shipyards district today.
While the iconic Lonsdale Quay undergoes significant renovations, Mathiesen wanted to remind the public that the Quay and its businesses are still open from 9 a.m. to

Qatar: Qatar warns World Cup fans about sneaking alcohol into country
|
Fans travelling to the 2022 World Cup will not be able to take alcohol for personal consumption into Qatar, with the head of the country's safety and security committee saying that "specific measures" are in place to take action against anyone attempting to smuggle liquor in their luggage, ESPN reported on September 8.
Although alcohol is strictly restricted in Qatar -- drinking in public can lead to fines of up to 3,000 riyal (£720) or prison sentences up to six months -- it can be purchased inside hotels, and the supreme committee in charge of the tournament has agreed to make beer - provided by World Cup sponsor Budweiser - available at stadiums and in fan zones during the World Cup, which begins on Nov. 20.
High consumption of alcohol during the early stages of Russia 2018 led to some bars in Moscow running out of beer as fans from across the world partied in the Russian capital.
But despite football fan culture in many regions of the world involving alcohol consumption before, during and after games, the Qatari authorities have said that alcohol availability will be limited to designated areas only and that fans will not be allowed to bring their own
