Ireland: Some alcohol to more than double in price as new minimum pricing laws kick in
|
Some alcohol in Irish supermarkets will more than double in price as new minimum pricing laws kick in from January 4 in the Republic, the Belfast Telegraph reported on January 3.
All alcohol will have a minimum price based on the number of grams of alcohol, with one gram costing a minimum of 10c (8.5p).
It means some brands of spirits will cost several euro extra, while slabs of beer sold at promotional prices of around €20 (£16.80) will double in price.
While opponents say it will drive consumers to Northern Ireland to buy alcohol, others says the measures will effect much-needed change in society’s unhealthy relationship with alcohol.
In a price survey carried out over the last week of all major Irish supermarkets, the Irish Independent found major increases loom when minimum pricing is applied.
The legislation, introduced in May last year, aims to reduce consumption by heavy drinkers by making strong drink less affordable and therefore reduce alcohol-related harm.
While the new system will not affect the price of premium alcohol, cheaper brand prices and promotional prices will rocket.

Turkey: Turkey increases special consumption tax on alcohol and tobacco by 47.4%
|
The Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) levied on alcoholic beverages and tobacco products in Turkey has been increased by 47.4 percent. That being the case, the amount of tax to be paid for a pack of cigarettes has been increased from 9.76 to 14.39 lira, the Bianet reported on January 3.
The List of Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) updated based on the Domestic Producer Price Index has been published on the website of the Revenue Administration of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance.
According to the updated list of the Administration, the minimum fixed amount of Special Consumption Tax to be levied on alcoholic beverages and tobacco products has been increased by 47.4 percent, which accounts for the 6-month change in the Domestic Producer Price Index.
While the amount of Special Consumption Tax on beer has been increased from 2.39 to 3.52 lira, the tax on wine has been increased from 11.76 to 17.34 lira and that on sparkling wine from 79.50 to 117.19 lira.

France: AB InBev angry with French hobby brewer who has named his brewery “Leff”
|
AB InBev is angry with a French hobby brewer, who has named his brewery "Leff". The world's largest beer brewer finds that hardly indistinguishable from its global brand Leffe. The Retail Detail reported on December 30.
Philippe Le Saux is not aware of any wrongdoing: he says he has named his brewery after the Leff, the river that flows through his hometown of Lanleff. Moreover, the names he has given his beers cannot be confused with Leffe: Bolec'h is a blond beer of 7.5 % ABV and Buzuch Coz is an amber coloured beer of 9 %. Le Saux has no ambitions to conquer the world with its beer: "I would be happy if I could produce a thousand bottles every month," the Breton told OuestFrance.
However, AB InBev is not putting up with that: Leff and Leffe are pronounced the same, so confusion is possible, the multinational believes - and so Le Saux should rename its brewery. However, the latter disagrees: in October he registered his name with the French National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI), so he believes his brand is protected.

Belgium: Belgian Barrels Alliance teams up with Zeromint to help preserve Belgian beer culture
|
Brewers and farmers of the Belgian Barrels Alliance (BBA) have teamed up with Zeromint to offer non-fungible tokens (NFT) aimed at preserving the Belgian beer culture and heritage recognized by UNESCO, the Bharat Express News reported on January 1.
As part of the partnership, Zeromint will create and offer exclusive NFTs on the GoChain blockchain, which will be made available to international beer lovers through BBA. From January 1, the organization will run several BBA NFT fundraising projects around the sustainability and preservation of Belgian brewing heritage for the next 14 days.
According to the official statement, the first Belgian NFT barrel auction will be used to recruit 11 participants to star in a film produced by BBA titled Belgian Barrels:
“The aim of the film project is to further eternalize the history of Belgian beer through professional film production, which BBA plans to promote and distribute globally.”
Additionally, NFT winners will join a whitelist of VIP access to all BBA events and access to vintage beer menus and exclusive bottles at BBA clubs. “Eighty percent (80%) of the revenue generated from the NFT auction will go to a local charity in Belgium,” the ad says. UK: Consumers increasingly choosing low- and no-alcohol products all year round
|
UK drinkers increasingly choose low- and no-alcohol products all year round, and not just for Dry January. That’s the finding from a fourth annual online study by YouGov, commissioned by the Portman Group, beertoday.co.uk reported on January 4.
Almost one in three (32%) UK drinkers now ‘semi-regularly’ consume low- and no-alcohol products, compared to one in four (25%) in 2020. Furthermore, a fifth (20%) of those who have tried low and no alcohol say they are more likely to drink these products now compared to a year ago, almost double the number saying this in last year’s survey (11%).
Despite covid restrictions, the most popular reason for consumers who have tried low and no alcohol to drink these products continues to be ‘being able to drive home from social events’ (chosen by 33% of respondents). Reducing the possibility of health concerns or current medical reasons were also cited by 22% of consumers.
The other main reason is to socialise without drinking excessively, with 20% of respondents, while 12% explicitly stated they currently alternated low and no products with regular strength alcohol to moderate their overall consumption.

Trinidad & Tobago: Carib beers and other products become more expensive

Consumers of Carib products will now be paying $1 more for their beverages, the Trinidad and Tobago Newsday reported on January 4.
The price increase came into effective on Monday, January 3, and will apply to bottled and canned products of Carib, Carib Pilsner, Stag, Carib Blue, Royal Extra Stout, Coors, Heineken, Guinness, Smirnoff Ice and Blue Moon.
Caribe, Hurricane Reef and Mackeson prices remain the same and the cost of non-alcoholic beverages such as Shandy, Ginseng, Malta and Smalta also remains unchanged.
Speaking with Newsday, Ansa McAl’s chief of legal and head of external affairs Frances Bain-Cumberbatch said the company has tried to hold its prices for a long time, but external factors had forced changes in the pricing structure.
She said, “The price increase was not something that was done readily. We held back. Many other companies, particularly in the beverage industry, would have increased their prices a long time ago.
“We held back in many ways because we knew and understood it was a difficult time for everyone. So Carib has done that.

UK: New spring malting barley variety Tungsten showing good northern yields and early maturity
|
New spring malting barley variety Tungsten could be a useful partner in the North for market leader Laureate due to its good northern yields and early maturity, The Farmers Weekly reported on January 4.
The variety is yet to be fully approved by the maltsters as a dual-purpose variety for brewing and distilling, but feedback has been positive and there is enough seed available this spring to take 3-4% of the spring barley market.
Tungsten comes from the same Syngenta breeding stable as Laureate, and Kathryn Hamlen, the group’s technical manager for malting barley, sees it being attractive to spring barley growers in Scotland and northern England.
“The variety has shown an incredibly good yield in the North and has early maturity,” she tells Farmers Weekly.
The variety made it onto the AHDB Recommended List two years ago in December 2019 and shows the highest equal fungicide-treated yield in the North at 104%, alongside fellow new malting varieties Jensen and Firefoxx and feed variety Fairway.
The spring malting barley market is currently dominated by dual-purpose varieties Laureate and Diablo, and brewing-only variety Planet.
Although Tungsten’s maturity is the same as Laureate at one day later than control variety Planet on the AHDB list, Mrs Hamlen says
