Vietnam: Sabeco’s Q3 post-tax profits plunge 68 percent
|
Vietnam’s largest brewer, Sabeco, said post-tax profits plunged 68 percent year-on-year in the third quarter to VND471 billion ($20.7 million) due to Covid-19 restrictions, VnExpress International reported on October 29.
The fourth wave of the pandemic had caused lockdowns and social distancing in HCMC and southern provinces, which affected its business badly, Sabeco said in its financial earnings report.
Profits for the first nine months fell 25.7 percent to VND2.53 trillion as sales dropped by 13.6 percent to VND17.37 trillion.
The company, owned by Thai beverage giant ThaiBev, targets revenues of VND33.49 trillion and profits of 5.29 trillion this year, up 20 percent and 7 percent from 2020.

India: Demand for spirits and beer at pre-Covid levels in the September quarter
|
India’s demand for spirits and beer rose to pre-Covid levels in the September quarter on a weak year-earlier base and a consistent recovery in footfalls in the out-of-home consumption category, The Economic Times reported on November 2, citing companies data.
The pandemic hit beer and spirits makers as restaurants and pubs across the country operated with low footfalls amid pandemic-related restrictions. That appears to have reversed in the September quarter with curbs being eased as Covid cases decline and vaccinations rise.
Spirits firms Diageo and Pernod Ricard, which account for nearly three-fourths of the market, grew 14% and 27%, respectively, in the quarter. "This category has almost emerged as semi-essential. Now, on an ongoing basis, we are seeing a steady flow of orders and demand. That is the key indication for us in terms of recovery," said United Spirits managing director Hina Nagarajan.
Rival Pernod Ricard's finance director Helene de Tissot said India is growing at 27%, with a very strong rebound from the year-ago base.
According to the International Wine and Spirits Research (IWSR) data, the overall India spirits market fell 20% in the last calendar year with volume dropping to 277 million cases. The beer segment saw the sharpest dip by 39%

Croatia: Carlsberg Croatia to invest in new can filling line to boost capacity of Koprivnica brewery
|
Brewer Carlsberg Croatia said it is investing 19 million kuna ($2.9 million/2.5 million euro) in a new can filling line to boost the production capacity of its brewery in Koprivnica, in the north of the country, SeeNews reported on October 29.
The investment will raise production volume by an estimated 46%, the company said in a statement on its website on October 28.
The new filling line for beer and cider is due to be launched in May.
The investment will create 20 jobs.

|
Rishi Sunak’s planned reform of alcohol taxes would pose a threat to craft brewers and artisanal spirit makers while reducing choice for consumers, drinks industry figures have warned.
The chancellor announced a sweeping overhaul in this week’s budget, under which alcohol duty will increase in line with alcohol content from 2023. Draught beer will also be granted a tax break to help struggling pubs.
While the proposals have met with approval from trade bodies and some pub and drinks companies, smaller businesses warned that the plans would stifle innovation and favour large corporations.
Craft brewers said unusual but much-loved styles such as imperial stouts or double IPAs might become economically unviable under plans to levy a higher rate of tax on beers above 8.5% alcohol by volume (ABV).
“We release our My Continuous Improvement imperial stout once a month as a bit of a treat,” said Paul Jones, the co-founder of the Cloudwater brewery in Manchester.
“Customers love it but they drink it in moderation. At 11% [ABV], we don’t know whether we’ll be able to continue making it. The cost of production would go up by around 35%.”

UK: Innis & Gunn’s brewery in Edinburgh gets planning permission
|
Planning permission for Innis & Gunn’s brewery at Heriot-Watt University’s Research Park has officially been granted by the City of Edinburgh Council, the Scottish Construction Now reported on October 29.
Spanning a two-hectare site, the new facility will provide increased brewing capacity which will ultimately support the brewer’s continued growth, both in the UK and internationally. This will be the first major brewery to be built in Edinburgh for over 150 years.
The brewer’s core range, comprising of Innis & Gunn’s The Original, Lager Beer and Session IPA, as well as other unique, cask-matured beers will be brewed at the new site. Beer fans will be able to experience the process first-hand with guided tours of the brewery set to be on offer.
One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the collaboration between Innis & Gunn and Heriot-Watt University. Plans are being drawn up to ensure that students undertaking both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the world-renowned School of Brewing and Distilling spend time on placement in the brewery, engaged in on-the-job learning, so that they are as well prepared as possible when entering the job market. Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia confirms price revision for some of its drinks this month

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd has confirmed that the prices of some of its drinks will be revised from the middle of this month to account for rising costs, as per a leaked letter that had been making the rounds on WhatsApp, The Edge Markets reported on November 2.
Carlsberg Malaysia has confirmed with theedgemarkets.com that the contents of a letter dated Oct 14 is an official communication from the company to its trade partner.
Responding to queries on Tuesday, November 2, Carlsberg Malaysia said: “We would also like to reiterate that the price adjustments are to our trade partner and we do not determine retail (consumer) prices, which are set independently by our customers.”
The letter, signed by the group’s sales director Gary Tan, said the new prices for beer and stout would take effect from Nov 15.
“The contents of the letter are meant to be treated with strict confidentiality between us as a manufacturer and our trade partner. As such, we regret that the letter and information contained therein have been circulated publicly in an irresponsible manner.
“It is up to the retailers to determine consumer prices according to their business needs,” it added in an email statement.

North America: Industry working through serious issues with barley quality
|
A very difficult situation remains in North America as the industry works through barley quality where high protein is a serious issue, RMI Analytics reported at the end of October.
Two Danish cargoes are rumoured to be destined for import and in addition Australia is being considered as the supply situation is tight.
The severe dry conditions are a concern for next year and moisture replenishment across the main barley growing regions in North America has not yet arrived, so barley area may drop.
Not surprisingly Canadian barley prices are maintaining a level to reflect a likely deficit situation for malting barley.

Ukraine: Barley exports in July-October total 4.5 mln tonnes
|
Ukraine exported 5.05 million tonnes of grain in October, bringing the total export volume to 19.4 million tonnes in the first four months of the 2021/22 July-June season, agriculture ministry data showed on November 1.
The volume included 12.4 million tonnes of wheat, 4.5 million tonnes of barley and 2.3 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.
in the same period in 2020/21, exports totalled 16.5 million tonnes and included 10.6 million tonnes of wheat, 2.5 million of corn and 3.4 million tonnes of barley.
Ukraine plans to thresh a record 80.3 million tonnes of grain in 2021, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020. Exports could jump to 61.5 million tonnes from 44.7 million tonnes in 2020/21.
The government has said that grain exports could include 24.5 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million tonnes of corn and 5.2 million tonnes of barley.
The ministry said farms had harvested 60.7 million tonnes of grain by Oct. 28 from 80.1% of the sown area, with an average yield of 4.72 tonnes per hectare.
