The Czech Republic: Non-alcoholic beer consumption more than doubled over last six years

With a wide range of world-famous brands and a plethora of craft brewers, there’s no question the Czech Republic is a heaven for beer lovers. Now, though, the country is also seeing dramatically increased interest in non-alcoholic beers, with consumption more than doubling over the last six years, Expats.cz reported on September 21.
The rise of non-alcoholic beers indicates a change in drinking habits, with a greater wish to enjoy beer in social gatherings, or simply for the taste, without any of the usual intoxicating effects.
As large Czech brewers announce autumn price hikes across their ranges in line with inflation, many are questioning old drinking habits. The proliferation of types of non-alcoholic beer makes it easier to enjoy a drink during a work lunch, or before driving. Others are now discovering the possibilities of beer mixed drinks, in which non-alcoholic beer is combined with fruit juice.
“Non-alcoholic beer thrives every year. In 2020, it accounted for 7.3 percent of the total amount of beer produced for the domestic market, growing by 1.2 percent year-on-year,” Martina Ferencová, Executive Director of the Czech Association of Breweries and Malthouses, told Hospodářské noviny.

South Korea: Beer producer Hite Jinro ranked second among South Korea’s top performing companies in 2020

The South Korean government has named domestic food and beverage manufacturing giants CJ Cheiljedang, Hite Jinro and Nongshim as the 2020 national top performers in terms of food production, whilst celebrating an overall increase in output amid COVID-19 and food security concerns, FoodNavigator-Asia.com reported on September 21.
South Korea has made no secret of its food security concerns and worries about being over-reliant on imports for local staple foods such as wheat and soybeans, particularly after COVID-19 hit the region, and even developed a strategy earlier this year specifically targeting food security.
The productivity of the local food industry has also been a major concern due to COVID-19 interrupting supply chains and natural disasters such as floods, but according to a recent government report manufacturers appear to have pulled through despite the challenges to even achieve some growth in production.
“The domestic food industry grew to KRW84.33 trln (US$72.9 bln) in 2020, up 4.1% from KRW81.77 trln (US$70.6 bln) in the previous year [despite] being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges,” the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) said via an official statement.

USA, IL: Guinness to launch a restaurant, pub and brewery in Chicago’s Fulton Market neighborhood

The legendary Irish beer brand Guinness said on September 21 it will launch a restaurant, pub and brewery in Chicago’s Fulton Market neighborhood in early 2023, “hopefully in time for St. Patrick’s Day,” said Jay Sethi, chief marketing officer of Guinness’ parent company, Diageo Beer Co., a subsidiary of global spirits giant Diageo.
The 15,000-square-foot operation, in a long-empty former railroad depot at 375 N. Morgan St., will feature an array of beers made on-site, as well as Guinness’ iconic dry Irish stout imported from Dublin, plus “Irish pub food you’d expect from Guinness,” Sethi said. He said the company hopes the pub will reflect Chicago neighborhoods in its food and beer by collaborating with local chefs and brewers, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The pub, whose formal name will be announced in the coming months, will be a second U.S. location for the 262-year-old beer brand best known for its Guinness Draught, with an impenetrably black color that belies its easy-drinking, roasty nature at 4.2% alcohol. Guinness opened a production brewery outside Baltimore in 2017 that opened to the public a year later.

Jamaica: Diageo looking to improve supply of local flagship beer Red Stripe
|
Diageo Plc, which trades as Red Stripe in Jamaica, is looking to improve the supply of the flagship Red Stripe beer and other products on the local market following the Government’s relaxing the restrictive measures that were in place to help control the spread of COVID-19, the Jamaica Loop News reported on September 19.
According to Head of Commercial Operations at the company, Sean Wallace, while there is no shortage of Red Stripe beer on the Jamaican market, some of the company’s products have been missing from the stocks of retailers.
Wallace said the delivery of the different brands that the company manufactures has been affected by the four continuous weekends of three-day no-movement which were in place.
“Our operations are driven by a circular model whereby we recycle our bottles for resale to the trade. With the (a) bottle shortage, we had to readjust our production plan, which created delays in restocking and sale to our customers,” said Wallace.
The no-movement days started each Saturday evening and ended on Wednesday at 5 am, eliminating commercial activities on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of each week.

Partnership between Budweiser and aluminium and packaging specialists EN+, Elval and Canpack will see five million 440ml low carbon beer cans available cross UK this autumn, Business Green reported on September 22.
Budweiser Brewing Group has announced plans to trial "ultra-low carbon" beer cans in the UK, as it gears up to make five million 440ml cans available to drinkers across the country this autumn.
The UK branch of multinational brewing giant AB InBev has partnered with Russian low carbon aluminium producer Rusal - part of the En+ Group - Poland's Canpack, and rolled aluminium manufacturer Elval to develop the cans using zero emissions technology and renewable electricity, it revealed yesterday.
Budweiser claims the beer cans, which are made from a mix of recycled aluminium and "ultra low carbon" aluminium produced by Rusal, will have the lowest carbon footprint of any AB InBev Europe can, with production of the packaging traceable back to its source.
The cans will also be filled with beer produced at Budweiser's breweries in South Wales and Lancashire, which are powered using 100 per cent renewable electricity, the firm said.

Canada: Barley production expected to fall 34% this year
|
Stats Can released new crop production figures last week and there are more details on the report, which highlighted much lower production due to summer drought.
The report says Canadian barley production this year will fall 34 percent to 7.1 million tonnes.
Yields are down 38 percent to 44 bushels an acre.
Oat production will drop 44 percent to 2.6 million tonnes. Average oat yields are projected at 60 bushels an acre this year.
Soybean production will drop 7.4 percent to 5.9 million tonnes.
Total wheat production is expected to be down 38 percent to 21.7 million tonnes.
In Saskatchewan, the average yield is estimated at 28 bushels an acre, down 39 percent.
Canola production in Canada is the lowest since 2010, estimated at 12.8 million tonnes.
Canola yields in Saskatchewan are projected at 21 bushels an acre, down 50 percent.

UK: A series of beer launches aims at re-popularising British hops
|
The growing thirst for craft beer has made British hops fall out of fashion because modern brewers use imported New World varieties that offer a fruitier flavour.
But now a Derbyshire craft beer brewer, a Worcestershire hop grower, and Tesco, want to reverse the decline by re-popularising British hops through a series of beer launches, ISN Magazine reported on September 21.
The first in the series, Brithop, made by Buxton Brewery, launches exclusively at Tesco this week and on the label, the beer is described as “an all British-grown IPA, showcasing some of the most exciting and aromatic new hops to be developed by British hop growers”.
The shift towards fruitier tasting New World hops from America, Australia and New Zealand began around 20 years ago with the birth of the craft beer movement and brewers who wanted their beers to taste boldly different.
Rather than copy traditional British beer styles such as best bitters and milds, they created new beers based on popular types from all over the world.
