Brewery news USA, ME: Bigelow Brewing purchases site for larger facility
When Pam Powers purchased a home-brewing kit for her husband, Jeff, as a Christmas present back in 1989, the couple never imagined home brewing would become an ever-growing business, the Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel reported on November 16.

Jeff Powers’ dream to open a brewery was initially put on hold to raise their two children. In 2010, however, the Powers decided to convert the barn, which once housed seven horses, into a brewery. Bigelow Brewing opened in May 2014 just steps away from their home at 473 Bigelow Hill Road, Skowhegan.

On Nov. 8, the Powers took another step — a giant one — in growing their business as they closed on their purchase of the Solon Manufacturing Co. building at 7 Island Ave. with ambitious plans to renovate the four-story building that also has a full basement.

“We are really excited (about this purchase)” Pam Powers said. “I don’t think we saw any of this coming our way. I never thought that the gift would have taken off the way that it did.”

The couple plans to turn the first floor of the 80,000-square-foot building into a production facility, complete with a 15-barrel brew house and seating and band area. Though ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OK: Kochendorfer Brewing Company to hold grand opening on November 23
The highly anticipated opening of Duncan's first brewery is coming very soon. The Kochendorfer Brewing Company will host their grand opening on Saturday, November 23 at the brewery located at 1155 McCurdy Road. After many months leading up to the announced opening date, Kochendorfer is sure to deliver a spectacular grand opening with all eyes and taste buds on their craft beers, PR Web reported.

The grand opening will be held from 1:00 PM-11:00 PM. The festivities for the day will include food trucks and a live performance by Chance Anderson. Attendees may easily purchase tickets online at http://www.kochendorferbrewing.com. Each $20.00 advance ticket will include 2 beers and a Kochendorfer Grand Opening commemorative beer glass.

The brewery began with Chris and Laura Kochendorfer, and Lenny and Kathryn Cripps. When the Kochendorfers and Cripps first met, it was obvious they shared the same dream of one day opening a brewery. With the ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Woodhouse Brewing opens new brewpub in Toronto’s west end
One of Ontario’s best known contract brewers has announced the opening of a brewpub location in Toronto’s west end, the Canadian Beer News reported on November 21.

Woodhouse Brewing was launched in 2014 by beer industry veteran Graham Woodhouse, and has established a portfolio of core brands that are brewed at several partner facilities for retail and licensee sales.

For its bricks-and-mortar location, Woodhouse has moved into the spot at 303 Lansdowne Avenue that was home to Lot 30 Brewers until its closure earlier this year.

Officially open since November 18 following a soft opening late last week, Woodhouse currently has seven beers on tap – Light (4% abv), Lager (5% abv), APA (4.9% abv), IPA (6% abv), ESB (4.9% abv), Kolsch (5.2% abv), and Stout (4.7% abv) – along with a guest tap from Duxbury Cider and a short wine list.

The food menu developed by chef and restaurateur Jesse Fader features bar snacks and comfort food favourites including lemon pepper wings, roast chicken, t-bone steak, ravioli, and more.

Woodhouse Brewing is open from 5:00 PM daily.

Brewery news USA, NJ: Nomad Brewing Co. scheduled to open in Lumberton in January or February
Lumberton residents longing for a cold, craft beer — one made with local ingredients, of course — can finally rejoice: A new brewery is scheduled to open on Ark Road as soon as January or February, the Burlington Country Times reported on November 19.

Construction is about halfway complete on Nomad Brewing Co., according to business partners Damien Leonti, of Hainesport, and Rich May, of Lumberton.

“It’s kind of a rustic and industrial look with a relaxed atmosphere,” Leonti said on November 18 about the new brewery and restaurant at 106 Ark Road. “We’re just looking to have a real local community place.”

The brewery will offer locally sourced food and spirits, and Nomad Brewing already has a working relationship with Red Top Farm Market on Route 70 in Southampton, according to Leonti.

Brewery news USA, KY: Brew Bridge Brewery to become Owensboro’s first official brewery by February
Owensboro’s first official brewery no longer remains nameless. Escape Today owners David Haynes and Max Garvin have settled on Brew Bridge as the namesake for their new business venture, The Owensboro Times reported on November 18.

“It’s one of the most difficult things we’ve had to do so far,” Haynes said. “A lot of names are already taken that would have been good options, but we feel like we have landed on a name that is catchy and also represents our community well.”

Haynes and Garvin were quick to explain the distinction between a bar and a brewery, as the duo looks forward to the opening of their establishment in February.

“When we first announced that we were going to be opening a brewery, there was a little bit of confusion as to why we were doing it,” Haynes said. “A lot of people in Owensboro felt like there was no need for another bar in town, which we actually agree with. Brew Bridge is going to be a place for people who enjoy trying locally-brewed craft beers. The beer we will be selling is going to be brewed on-site, which customers will be able to view from the bar.”

Brewery news USA, DE: Crooked Hammock Brewery already open in Middletown
Middletown has a bit of a backyard brewery scene going on, The News Journal reported on November 18.

A taste of the beach landed in MOT last week with the opening of Crooked Hammock Brewery, a spinoff of the popular Lewes-area company and Middletown's first-ever brewpub.

And just like its southern sister, Middletown's Crooked Hammock is all about a backyard vibe with an expansive 15,000-square-foot backyard area filled with fun, including a playground, spaces for cornhole, shuffleboard and bocce ball, a fire pit and, of course, multiple hammocks.

Crooked Hammock, located at 316 Auto Park Drive off Del. 299, is the town's second brewery, joining Volunteer Brewing Co., which has its own backyard theme.

Brewery news Jamaica: Desnoes & Geddes new managing director aims at scaling up production, sales and profits, and reducing operating costs
Luis Prata has a reputation as a turnaround manager. But that is not his mission in Jamaica, the Jamaica Gleaner reported on November 22.

The new managing director of Desnoes & Geddes Limited, which trades as Red Stripe Jamaica, has joined a company that is already seen as well run.

So Prata’s goal is to dramatically scale up production, sales and profits, and slash operating costs. And, like others before him, he is looking to the Jamaican Government to cut the company a break.

The pitch that Red Stripe is teeing up surrounds its estimations of the brewery’s cumulative value-added contribution to the Jamaican economy in revenues along the value chain, salaries and taxes, which Prata said totalled $21 billion last year, or roughly one per cent of Jamaica’s GDP.

Red Stripe, which was taken over by Dutch beermaker Heineken four years ago, says it generated $5 billion in margins for its trade partners locally, and created 446 direct jobs and 6,700 indirect ones, which it says is 0.5 per cent of the national workforce.

The bulk of that calculated value chain impact, the company says, goes towards government taxes, which amounted to $7 billion in 2014 and $11 billion in 2018.

It’s not the first ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Distell not giving up its fight against AB InBev
Brewer Distell’s attempt to get its rival, AB InBev, declared in breach of its merger conditions with SABMiller has fizzled out. But it’s not giving up just yet, The Africa Report said on November 19.

In its complaint lodged with the Competition Commission, Distell accused the merged entity of removing “competitors’ advertising material from outlets”. But the Competition Commission found that “the conditions had not been breached,” according to the Competition Tribunal.

Distell is pursuing the matter further with the Competition Tribunal.

Distell spokesperson, Dennis Matsane says the company has asked the Tribunal “to issue a notice of apparent breach of merger conditions and that the conduct relied on by Distell be fully investigated.”

In June 2016, the Tribunal granted conditional approval for the AB InBev and SABMiller tie-up in what was dubbed the “megabrew” deal. At the time, the transaction was valued at $100bn, resulting in the creation of the world’s biggest brewer with annual sales of $55bn.

Before the deal, AB InBev was the largest beer brewer globally, while SABMiller occupied second place. The transaction triggered competition concerns in multiple jurisdictions because AB InBev was the dominant brewer in the developed world, while SABMiller had conquered emerging markets.

The deal resulted in Budweiser, Stella ...More info on site

Brewery news Denmark: Alcohol consumption drops to 9.1 litres per capita in 2017
While Danes were once in the vanguard of Europe's drinking statistics, the country’s alcohol consumption is now closer to that of its peers, The Local Denmark reports.

Over the past ten years, Denmark has seen one of the largest drops in alcohol consumption amongst OECD countries, from 12.1 litres of pure alcohol annually per adult (aged 16 and over) in 2007, to 9.1 litres in 2017.

As such, the Scandinavian country is now not far from the average consumption in the OECD countries of 8.9 litres, according to a new OECD report comparing health conditions in its 36 member states.

People in Denmark still pour considerably more beer, wine and spirits into their glasses than their Nordic counterparts, however.

Consumption per person is 6 litres in Norway, 7.1 in Sweden and 8.4 in Finland, the OECD report states.

“(Alcohol) consumption in Denmark is still too high. My concern is particularly for young people, who still have a high consumption,” said Karin Friis Bach, chairperson for the health committee of Danish Regions, the interest organization for Denmark’s five regional health authorities.

A study in June this year by Danish research institute Vidensråd for Forebyggelse (Knowledge Council for Prevention) showed that young people in Denmark start drinking alcohol ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Scottish craft brewer BrewDog opens new production facility in Brisbane
Scottish craft brewer BrewDog has opened its A$30 mln ($20.4 mln) production brewery and taproom in Brisbane, Queensland, the Drinks Insight Network reported on November 21.

The DogTap Brisbane is reported to be BrewDog’s first in the Southern Hemisphere.

Queensland minister for state development and manufacturing Cameron Dick said: “BrewDog were looking to establish a brewery in Australia, but their final investment decision pitted Brisbane, Queensland against Newcastle, New South Wales.

“Craft brewing in Queensland continues to grow and thrive, and with BrewDog also selling local craft beers and planning collaborations in the future, our industry’s global reputation and reach will only go further.”

Dick added that the Queensland government has agreed to offer A$150 mln ($102 mln) to the Scottish brewer through its Advance Queensland Industry Attraction Fund.

To support and encourage local Queensland brewers, the brewery and taproom will also feature local beer brands such as Range Brewing, Balter, Currumbin Valley Brewery, Black Hops, Aether and Brouhaha.

Equipped with a line-up of nearly 28 taps, DogTap Brisbane will also offer non-alcoholic brews to its customers.

BrewDog Australia operations manager Calvin McDonald said: “When BrewDog started to look at establishing in Australia, the first thing we noticed was the exciting phase the Queensland craft brewing scene ...More info on site
