WHERE DO THE IBUS GO?

ABSTRACT
A very good overview about IBU development during brewing was presented by the Research Team of Ballast Point Brewing. Although the measurement of IBU does not reveal specifics about the measured components (be it Isohumulones, alpha acids or humulinones) to measure IBUs throughout the process is an efficient way to get to know your hop processes better. Some findings are not surprising but important for efficient brewing. The bitterness utilization decreases with increasing hop rates and increasing original gravity values. Utilization increases with higher pH values. Based on IBUs and depending on bitterness level utilization values in the whirlpool can vary between 8-45%.

Brewery news USA: Analysts note craft beer sales growth within on-premise establishments this year
After the boom and subsequent plateauing of craft beer sales in the US, on-premise experiential drinking establishments are managing to draw in new customers. Brewpubs, taprooms and game-based bars all saw a surge in popularity in 2018, BeverageDaily.com reported on December 10. Three years ago in-store craft beer sales were seeing a sales growth increase of 12.9%. In-store craft beer sales took a knock between 2017 and 2018, declining 0.2%, yet still reaching $4.9 bln. And according to Nielsen data, there are positive signs of sales growth within US on-premise establishments.

Drinkers are now more drawn to experience-based locations for their alcohol consumption than typical bars with no extra incentives. Consumers said they have visited experiential locations 'more often' in the last year, rather than 'less often', with 43% trying out game-based bars, 42% at a brewery tasting room, 42% at rooftop bars, 42% at premium bars and 41% at groce-rants (a cross between grocery market and restaurant or cafe).

“Despite the appeal of experiential drinking venues among the younger consumers, however, the desire to find new places to drink isn’t exclusive to Millennials. In fact, 15% of all US consumers of legal drinking age ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Eight new breweries coming to Denver next year
The past year was an unusual one for breweries in Denver. At least one (Goldspot) was sold, while three others (Deep Draft, Beryl's and Zephyr) closed and were reopened with new owners and new names (Thirsty Monk, 14er Brewing and Blue Tile, respectively). But despite the changes and the overall slowdown in the craft-beer industry, Denver boasted a substantial group of brand-new breweries. In addition to the three names above, the city has welcomed Oasis Brewing, Long Table Brewing, the Grateful Gnome Sandwich Shoppe & Brewery, Burns Family Artisan Ales, Dos Luces, Novel Strand Brewing, Liberati Osteria & Oenobeers, a new Odell Brewing taproom and a New Belgium Brewing pilot system. Then there's Tom's Urban Kitchen & Brewery, with beer made by an outlet of Tivoli Brewing, that's up and running at Denver International Airport, and the Cultural Center, a joint project of Westbound & Down and Amalgam Brewing that will host events and serve beer during occasional taproom hours, Westword reported on December 10.

What will 2019 bring? More breweries, of course — although the pace may run behind 2018's surprising clip. The upcoming year could also hold bad news, as there are a few local breweries teetering on the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Resolute Brewing Co. announces second location in Centennial
Resolute Brewing Co. has announced a second location set to open in early Q2 of 2019, Brewbound reported on December 11.

Resolute Tap and Cellar will be located in Arvada on the Southeast corner of Highway 72 and Candelas Parkway in Centennial, Colorado. They are eager to begin a robust barrel-aging program and serve Arvada and the surrounding communities.

Team Resolute resonates as one around their passion for community, an uncompromising commitment to detail, great people, and delicious craft beer. Their original brewery and taproom opened in 2016 in Centennial, CO, and they have since run out of space to store and age beer in barrels. They also recognize the Candelas neighborhood as a unique opportunity.

“I’m thrilled to call Arvada our second home!” exclaimed Head Brewer Justin Burnsed. “The area is exploding with new development, and we are more than eager to build upon our operations to serve the community.” Burnsed plans to showcase a wide variety of styles and variations both classic and contemporary, including a diverse lineup of barrel-aged beers and Resolute’s core lineup.

The taproom will feature a rounded bar, open views into a climate controlled barrel-aging facility, a pet and family friendly atmosphere, along with a garage door opening ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Abe Erb Brewing to open third brewpub in Guelph soon
Abe Erb Brewing has announced that it will soon be opening a third brewpub location in The Platform, a recently launched shared workspace facility in Guelph, Ontario, the Canadian Beer News reported on December 10.

Located in The Junction, a 45,000 square foot mixed-use development in a former CN Rail building and two new builds, The Platform is described as “a stylish office space that offers a collaborative hub for local business owners who are seeking an office, or offices, outside of their home.”

Abe Erb will be opening a brewery, bar, and full service restaurant on the site, with Rob Theodosiou, President/CEO of Abe Erb, saying in a statement that the company is “looking forward to creating a venue for neighbours, friends, and family to reconnect while enjoying local food, local beer and local entertainment.”

This is the third location for Abe Erb following the original in Waterloo, and the second which opened last year in Kitchener.

Brewery news USA, CT: Skygazer Brewing Co. near to opening in Southington
Southington’s third brewery is nearer to opening with the completion of its building on Triano Drive, the Meridien Record-Journal reported on December 8.

Skygazer Brewing Co. its tanks and other equipment in place at its location in an industrial park off Lazy Lane.

“Everything’s in there. It’s just a matter now of putting the final touches on and getting a certificate of occupancy for the town,” said building owner Andy Meade.

Brewery owners Taylor Pilewski, of Wallingford, and Erik Tynik, of Bristol, have said they’ll focus on brewing and have a small tasting area rather than attempt the brew pub business model. With a new building, Pilewski was able to include all the necessary infrastructure needed for a brewery from the start, rather than retrofit an older building.

The owners could not be reached for comment for this story.

Skygazer will offer four packs of their craft beer to go, according to the company’s website.

The 6,000-square-foot industrial space is also home to John Meade’s landscaping business. He owns the building with his father, Andy Meade. Another unit is occupied by Packt House, a clothing design, video and music production company that signed a lease this week.

Andy Meade said there’s one more unit that’s been under ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: As Built Brewing slated to launch in Franklin in about a year
Franklin's first brewery and the only within a 20-minute drive of Franklin is slated to open in about a year, the Worcester Business Journal reported on December 11.

As Built Brewing, a team of three high school and college friends and engineers, is building out a 6,000-square-foot space in downtown Franklin.

Co-founder Jay Mello and two friends have been perfecting their recipes in his home for about three years. Now, the group's plan is finally coming to fruition.

According to Mello, he and co-founder Erik Toubridge began homebrewing straight out of college about 10 years ago before the Massachusetts craft beer scene really took off.

"We gave it a crack then, but it wasn't anything like it is now," he said, commenting on the wide variety of craft brews.

Now with partner Nick Erickson, the three envision a brewery complete with a taproom and production in the same space, including a canning machine. As Built is predicting a modest start, brewing up to 1,000 barrels in its first year of operation.

The group plans to eventually have as many as 12 beers on tap at any given time, including flagships New England IPA Laminar and Press Play.

As Built plans to tap into the maintained demand for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Deschutes Brewery again delays Virginia expansion
Deschutes Brewery will not be breaking ground on its Roanoke, Virginia, brewing facility in June — as previously planned, the Bend Bulletin reported on December 7.

In April, the brewery told officials in Roanoke it would need to put the brakes on its plans to build a second brewery with capacity to produce 190,000 barrels a year after experiencing its first sales decline in its 30-year history.

“At this time, we continue to watch trends in the craft beer market for the right time to build a facility that is high quality and economically sustainable,” said Michael LaLonde, Deschutes Brewery president and CEO. “We don’t foresee breaking ground in 2019 as originally planned, but we will meet a commitment next spring to let the city of Roanoke know our updated plans.”

According to Roanoke City Council documents, the brewery must come up with a performance schedule by March 31 and submit plans by Aug. 31, 2020. Construction must begin no later than June 30, 2021, according to public documents.

Deschutes had planned to break ground by June, start brewing test batches in 2020 and begin shipping from the facility by 2021. In April, Deschutes gave up government incentives in exchange for flexibility on the ...More info on site

Mid-sized Czech brewer Bernard has reported record production figures for 2018, the Radio Prague reported on December 9.

The brewer produced over 356,000 hectolitres of beer between January and November, exceeding last year’s production by around 24,000 hectolitres.

Brewery news Colombia: Aguila steadily climbing ranks as the bona fide beer brand of Colombia
Aguila is steadily climbing the ranks as the bona fide beer brand of Colombia. The business valuation company, Brand Finance, deemed the beer famous for its patriotic yellow label as the second strongest beer brand in the world and included it in the top 25 of the world’s most valuable beer brands in its end-of-year report. Two years ago Belgium-based beer behemoth Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired SABMiller–which owned the Colombian subsidiary Bavaria Brewing— and since then its Colombian beer brands have ascended in the marketing ranks, The Bogota Post reported on December 7.

Until 2005, Bavaria Brewing was Colombia’s largest brewery. All of the regional arguments about which of Colombia’s beer is tastiest and most refreshing (and cheapest) can be traced back to the expertise and marketing genius of Leo Kopp, a German migrant who founded the country’s first brewery in 1889. The most notable Colombian beer brands include Poker, Costeña, Club Colombia, and Pilsen, all of which fall under the Bavaria umbrella. Aguila, the pale golden lager from Barranquilla, is the peacemaking beer as it is the official sponsor for the national Colombian soccer team.

Over the last decade the Colombian market has been the most brand-conscious and brand-savvy market ...More info on site

Brewery news Italy: Court reverses trademark decision previously in favour of Heineken’s Italian arm
Heineken’s Italian arm suffered defeat last week when the EU General Court reversed a European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) decision that had previously gone in its favour, the World Intellectual Property Review reported on December 10.

The General Court delivered its decision in the trademark dispute on Friday, December 7.

Heineken Italia applied to register an EU figurative mark depicting the word ‘Cervisia’ and a circular element containing the representation of a seahorse with the EUIPO in 2014.

The beer manufacturer sought to register the mark in classes 32 and 33 for beers, fruit drinks, and alcoholic beverages.

The following year, Spanish beer producer La Zaragozana filed an opposition on the basis of its earlier-registered Spanish word mark ‘Cervisia Ambar’ (3,018,141), which was registered in 2012 in class 32 for beer.

In 2016, the EUIPO’s Opposition Division upheld La Zaragozana’s opposition after finding that a likelihood of confusion exists between the existing mark and the applied-for mark.

However, the Fifth Board of Appeal annulled the decision in 2017, finding that the aural similarity between the marks is outweighed by the visual and conceptual differences.

For example, in the applied-for mark, the word ‘Cervisia’ is “barely legible”, the board said, and the figurative elements of Heineken’s applied-for ...More info on site

Brewery news UK & India: UK court rules beer baron Vijay Mallya should be extradited to India
Business tycoon Vijay Mallya should be extradited from the United Kingdom to India to face fraud charges, a London court ruled on December 10.

The decision was confirmed by R. K. Gaur, a spokesperson for India's Central Bureau of Investigation. The extradition must also be approved by the UK Secretary of State.

Mallya, who was once known as the "King of Good Times," has waged an extended court battle to avoid extradition to India, where he has been charged with fraud and money laundering.

The beer baron took over as chairman of his father's United Breweries Group — known for India's hugely popular Kingfisher Beer — in 1983, and eventually poured money into a Formula 1 team and Indian Premier League cricket.

But the case against him is centered around Kingfisher Airlines, the carrier he founded that went bust six years ago.

He's being pursued by 17 Indian banks, who are trying to recover an estimated $1.3 billion in loans to Kingfisher Airlines. He has been charged by Indian investigators with diverting money from one of those loans into other assets and businesses and misleading his creditors. Mallya has repeatedly denied the charges.

"With respect where have I defrauded banks? I did not borrow a single ...More info on site
